3A Boys Golf: Aspen leads team race after day one, Montezuma-Cortez's Thayer Plewe two strokes up individually - Colorado High School Activities Association

ELIZABETH – After day one of action at the 2021 3A state boys golf tournament, played at Spring Valley Golf Club in Elizabeth, the Aspen Skiers lead the team field of 13, while the individual leader is Montezuma-Cortez’s junior Thayer Plewe.

Aspen is being led individually by the defending 3A state champion, senior Nic Pevny, who takes a one-over 73 into day two. He is tied for third with four other players. Right behind Pevny is junior Sky Sosna, who carded a two-over 74, while senior William Stiller finished with a 76.

The Skiers are currently four strokes ahead of the second place Lutheran Lions, who have a 227 team score, while Montezuma-Cortez sits in a close third with a 230. Aspen has one previous team title that came back in 2018.

Also in the team hunt are the defending champions, Colorado Academy, who are tied with Vail Christian with a 232 team score. In sixth is Sterling, with a 233, while Kent Denver is seventh with a 234.

On the individual leaderboard, Plewe carded five birdies, as well as an eagle on the par five 18th, while also tallying a pair of bogies to finish with a five-under 67. He is currently two strokes ahead of second place senior Connor Downey of Vail Christian, but six strokes ahead of the next five golfers, which includes Pevny, who all tallied the one over 73.

Plewe, who was runner-up at last year’s championships to Pevny by three strokes, will look to become the Panthers’ first individual boys state golf champion since 2002.

Day two of the 2021 3A state boys golf tournament will resume tomorrow morning with the first golfers going off at 8:30 a.m.
