For Niwot’s Carlos Kipkorir, running success is just part of the family

Niwot cross country’s family atmosphere has led both the boys and girls teams to incredible success in recent years, but “family” takes on a different meaning for junior Carlos Kipkorir.

While Kipkorir has been preparing for his second Class 4A state cross country meet this Saturday, his mother, Edna Kiplagat, has been making headlines of her own. On October 11, Kiplagat competed in the Boston Marathon and finished second for the women with a time of two hours, 25 minutes and nine seconds.

After running 26.2 miles, she crossed the finish line just 24 seconds after the first-place finisher and fellow Kenyan Diana Kipyokei. Kiplagat has been running professionally for 20 years, longer than Kipkorir has been alive.

“I’ve looked up to my mom a lot because she’s a big part of my life and it’s been really good seeing her progress, being fit and just being in shape and running as long as she’s been running,” he said. “I just want to follow that and do what she does to last longer and just keep getting better every year.”
