Broomfield alumnus Ty Davies, father Gary guide Fort Morgan to glory

At the start of the 2021 season, Broomfield High School alumnus Ty Davies wasn’t sure his Fort Morgan boys had what it took to rise to the top of Class 3A football. Earlier this month, they proved their head coach wrong when they stole the state championship from Mead with a 21-17 finish.

His guidance, as well as the talent the Mustangs fielded this year, earned him the Denver Broncos High School Coach of the Year honor as well as the 3A coach of the year award through CHSAA.

“Individual awards are so funny with football because it is, in my opinion, the ultimate team game,” he said recently. “I think, honestly, it kind of shows what an unbelievable team and coaching staff we had this year. It’s a bit of a celebration of the coaching staff and the job that they’ve done and this football team. You don’t win anything like that without having tremendous people around you.”

Nineteen years earlier, he had suited up for his last game as a Broomfield Eagle. His dad Gary, then the head coach at Broomfield for part of his 32-year stint with the Eagles, served as Fort Morgan’s quarterbacks coach.
