No. 3 Montrose boys hoops rolls past Delta to remain unbeaten

MONTROSE – The Montrose boys basketball team is still undefeated.

Third-ranked Montrose (13-0) faced Delta (2-5) on Tuesday and won 68-28. Prior to the game, Delta head coach Rob Ames said, “Montrose is the beat team on the Western Slope in all classifications.”

So far this season, Montrose hasn’t done much to prove Ames wrong.

“We took care of business and executed our plays,” Montrose senior Fletcher Cheezum said. “The mindset we have right now is to play every game to work hard to get better. I like where are offensively and defensively. The thing I like about our the most is anyone can score, whether it’s me, Luke (Hutto), Trey (Reese), Cody (Proctor) or Ashden (Oberg). All five of us can score and that’s what makes us hard to beat.”

Hutto is averaging over 15 points per game, while Cheezum is scoring more than 13 a night. Reese and Oberg average over seven points.

On Tuesday, Montrose jumped out to an early 11-0 lead and led 20-9 after the first quarter. They extended their lead to 29 points and led 44-15 at halftime. Montrose outscored Delta, 18-3, in the third quarter and went on to win 68-28.

“I thought our guys played really well defensively tonight versus Delta’s high ball screen offense,” Montrose coach Ryan Voehringer said. “We hedged very well and got into our transition, leading to easy buckets.”

For Delta, Braeden Sprout and Landan Clay had seven points apiece. Easton Baier had six points.

“Montrose is a skilled team and they played well tonight,” Ames said.

Delta will be at Fruita Monument on Friday. Montrose will play Fruita Monument on Tuesday to open league play.
