Montrose boys defeat Grand Junction Central to stay unbeaten

MONTROSE – The fourth-ranked Montrose boys basketball team hosted Grand Junction Central on Tuesday and the hosts won 61-36 to remain unbeaten on the season at 16-0.

“I thought we played pretty well tonight,” Montrose senior guard Cody Proctor said. “We started off great and got ahead early. Fletcher’s shooting led us to a big lead in the first half in the second half we tried to never give up.”

The Indians jumped out to a 7-0 lead and outscored the Warriors, 13-2, in the first four minutes of the first quarter. Montrose led 20-4 after the first quarter and 30-14 at halftime.

In the second half, Montrose continued to pull away, pushing their lead to 49-20 after three quarters and eventually winning by 25 points.

“I thought we got off to a great start tonight led by our point, Trey Reese,” Montrose head coach Ryan Voehringer said. “We got stops early and got out in transition, which led to easy baskets. Fletcher Cheezum shot the ball extremely well tonight from three. He led us with 21 points, followed by Trey Reese’s 12. I also felt Ashden Oberg played great at both ends. He also had 12 points.”

Raef Carter had 11 points for the Warriors, who dropped to 4-10 with the loss.

The Indians will play host to Durango on Saturday. The Warriors are at home against Eagle Valley on Thursday.
