No. 9 Severance baseball shuts out No. 5 Montrose on the road

MONTROSE – Ninth-ranked Severance traveled to face No. 5 Montrose on Friday for a battle of top-10 teams in Class 4A.

The Knights left town with a quality win, and did so in convincing fashion with a 10-0 victory.

“The game was a complete team effort in all three aspects of the game,” Severance head coach Kevin Johnson said. “Carson pitched very well and attacked the strike zone,  getting ahead in counts with a very aggressive lineup and our defense played well behind him. It was great to see the defense erase two of the three base runners with double plays. We also played good team baseball offensively by moving runners up with big hits with runners in scoring position.”

Montrose (5-2) managed just one hit against Severance (3-1) starter Carson Fagan, who threw five scoreless innings and improved to 3-0 on the season and still has now allowed an earned run this spring. Fagan, who is batting .417 so far in 2022, also went 2 for 3 with a triple at the plate on Friday, driving in a pair of runs for the Knights.

Behind Fagan, the Knights opened the game with four runs in the top of the first inning. They added four more in the third and tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth to close out the contest early.

“Severance is a good club with a good kid on the bump,” Montrose head coach Landon Wareham said. “We will get better.”

Severance’s Mason Bright also had three hits for the Knights, and Caden Panas and Austin Neeley each drove in a pair of runs.

Gage Wareham’s single was the lone hit for Montrose.
