1A state track: Elbert’s Mackey breaks 1A discus state meet record and more from Jeffco Stadium

LAKEWOOD – Zadie Mackey already knew she had the distance to break the 1A state meet record in the discus, she just had to execute and make the throw she knew she had when I mattered most.

To claim the record as her own, the Elbert sophomore had to do it at state.

So at Jefferson County Stadium on Thursday, Mackey seized the opportunity she had waited for all season and threw 137 feet, 7 inches to break the record by nearly four feet.

“That was the one thing I wanted when I came into this. That was the one goal I had,” Mackey said. “I’ve struggled a little bit for the last three weeks so right as I walked into the ring, I just said, ‘Lord, you take it. This is your throw and you do with it what you want.’ It worked out, I guess.”

Mackey’s three was three feet under her PR. Last season, she finished runner-up in the event.

Granada’s John Hainer won the 1A boys shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 3 inches.

Stratton’s Charlie Clapper won the 1A boys long jump 21 feet, 5.5 inches.

Heritage Christian’s Ainsley Stanton recorded a time 12:48.68 to win the 1A girls 3,200-meter run. To complete the 1A 3,200-meter sweep, Heritage Christian’s Jack Nauman won the boys race with a time of 10:19.23. Heritage Christian also won the 1A girls sprint medley relay with a 1A state meet record time of 1:52.27.

Lone Star’s Alivia Weathers cleared 10 feet, 1 inch to with the 1A girls pole vault.
