LAKEWOOD – Mohamed Ibrahim didn’t set out just to defend a title, he wanted to break a record.
On Thursday at Jefferson County Stadium, the Wiggins senior returned for one last hurrah at the Colorado track and field state championships and set the Class 2A state meet record at 59 feet feet, 10 inches in defending his title. The heave bested the old record by just three quarters of an inch.
“The main bar is chasing a sixty-foot throw because I’ve had a few of those in practice,” Ibrahim said. “I was coming in with the distance and I knew that was going to be the state record, so I came in with the mindset that I had to take the necessary steps to make it happen at state. It’s been a game of inches these past few weeks. But I felt good today and all the pieces were falling together, so I’m blessed to be where I am.”
Thursday’s triumph was also special for two-time champion, as it was yet another opportunity to compete alongside his brother, junior Laith Ibrahim. In 2021, Laith Ibrahim placed third in the 2A shot put. This year, the two finished back in the top 10 together with Mohamed winning and Laith placing seventh while battling a wrist injury.
“It’s going to be weird without him next year,” Laith Ibrahim said. “We’ve always pushed each other in all sports. He’s like a coach and being together these last couple of years has been really nice.”
Both brothers will compete in the 2A boys discus on Friday.
Ouray won the 2A boys 3,200-meter relay with a time of 8:16.08.
Yuma’s Clay Robinson won the 2A boys long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 0.5 inches.
Colorado Springs Christian won the 2A girls 3,200-meter relay with a time of 10:16.01.
Dayspring Christian’s Eboselulu Omofoma won the 2A girls high jump, clearing 5 feet, 5.5 inches.
