3A girls golf: St. Mary’s Academy, Bante, hold steady leads after day one

BROOMFIELD – A year after winning the first girls golf championship in program history, St. Mary’s Academy is in a prime position to do it again.

With a team score of 247, the Wildcats lead the next closest team by 19 strokes after the first day of competition of the 3A girls golf championship at Broomfield’s Broadlands Golf Course.

“I think we’re doing great as a team,” SMA head coach Ann Wolta Blackstone said. “Our top three are so solid. We’re going to be back tomorrow to go for it.”

Leading the way for St. Mary’s Academy was sophomore Maddy Bante, who carded the low round of the day a one-over 73. The teammates behind her are seniors Mallory Hopper and Natalie Tatar. All three players comprised the scoring members that won the title last June.

Bante battled through the tough scoring conditions, as well as a nagging back injury, tallying three birdies, including two in her last four holes to go into day two with some momentum.

“Maddy was amazing, she had a back injury that she was coming back from so we weren’t sure how she’d do, but one over par is amazing today,” Wolta Blackstone stated. “She just hits the ball so long, that’s makes such a big difference. She played smart, she got her pars, had a few birdies in there, just solid golf all around.”

Trailing the Wildcats are Kent Denver (266), Colorado Academy (267), Prospect Ridge (270), and Resurrection Christian (280).

In the individual title chase, three players stand atop the leaderboard. Bante leads the way, while trailing her are Peak to Peak’s Noelle Thompson, who carded a three-over 75, and Liberty Common’s Sydney Taylor, who shot a six-over 78. The next closest players in fourth are eight strokes back of the leader.

Last season, Bante placed runner-up, while Thompson placed 13th. Meanwhile, Taylor, a senior, did not participate in the 2021 3A girls golf championship.

Kent Denver’s Nicole Davari, Prospect Ridge’s Hope Torres, SMA’s Hopper, Kent Denver’ Elise Nelson, Jefferson Academy’s Samantha Duncan, Swink’s Kinzie Ensor, and Vail Mountain’s Logan Nobrega and Ava Crowley round out the top-10 heading into day two.

The second and final round of the 3A girls golf championship continues tomorrow with the first tee times scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Pairings and tee times for Day 2 will be released Tuesday night.
