Durango girls basketball takes down Montrose on the road

The Montrose Red Hawks (10-5) hosted the Durango Demons (14-2) on Friday and the visiting Demons won 44-26.

“Great defensive effort from the girls through four quarters,” Durango coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. “Then the offense came alive a bit more in the second half. Our bench once again made a huge contribution.”

The Demons got out to a quick lead and led 14-3 after the first quarter and 23-12 at halftime. After the Demons scored four, the Red Hawks scored seven in a row to cut the lead to 27-19. The score was 31-19 after three quarters and the Demons went on to win by double figures.

Mason Rowland had 19 points. Carter Newman had 10. Riley Campbell and Halle Peterson had four points apiece.

“Tough night offensively,” Montrose coach Steve Skiff said. “Give credit to Durango, they executed their game plan and made more plays than us. We will go back to work and look to improve.”
