Shot Clock Remains Hot Topic During Board of Directors Meeting

AURORA – The Colorado High School Activities Association’s Board of Directors met on Wednesday with the hot topic once again being around the implementation of a shot clock for boys and girls basketball.

There was an extensive discussion around a possible implementation timeline: including the level of play that should be impacted. The Board continued to evaluate pros and cons other states have experienced relative to the shot clock, but the bulk of discussion centered on sharing feedback heard from CHSAA member schools. The Board discussed support for the CHSAA Basketball Committee’s recommendation of adopting a 35-second shot clock (as outlined and defined by the NFHS) with implementation starting during the 2025-2026 school year at the varsity level only. Lower levels may use the shot clock, but it would not be required.

In consideration of district budgeting timelines and a desire to give schools a full 24-month notice, the Board has decided to vote on shot clock implementation at its November meeting.

“We value the voice of our membership, but we also know that schools are considering their future budgets,” Board of Directors President Ryan West said. “We feel like we need to expedite a decision on this prior to Legislative Council in January so that schools have the appropriate time to prepare.

“Board members will continue to conduct outreach to member schools in the lead up to the next Board meeting. If schools have questions or want to share input, they are encouraged to contact a Board member directly.”

In addition to the discussion around the shot clock, the Board voted to approve the nomination of Heidi Voehringer as the at-large representative for Region 2. Voehringer, a former student at teacher at Montrose High School, is now the principal at her alma mater. Her term will begin immediately and run through 2027.

The Board also voted to approve the minutes from the August Board Retreat, the July-August budget report, an amendment to the Officials Fees Committee report and Denver Tennis Park as the championship site for the Boys Tennis Team State Championships on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Non-voting updates consisted of a review of CHSAA’s annual audit, a finance and legal update, a report out from districts and organizations and a discussion around bylaw considerations to put forward to the Legislative Council in January.
