AURORA – On December 8, Colorado High School Activities Association Commissioner Mike Krueger joined Boulder Valley School District leaders Harry Waterman (BVSD District Athletic Director) and Stacey Zis (BVSD School Board member) for a presentation to attendees at the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) annual conference in Colorado Springs.
The team’s presentation was titled, “Game On! – Athletics/Activities and School Boards as Teammates.” The discussion centered on the values of athletics and activities to the school community and how school board members can work with other school leaders to support these important efforts. The team shared best practices and strategies that are currently demonstrating great success in the Boulder Valley School District.
The Commissioner’s part of the presentation entitled “Getting to Know the CHSAA” offered attendees an opportunity to learn about the 103-year-old organization that supports high school athletics and activities in the State. Commissioner Krueger provided a historical look at CHSAA, as well specifics on how the CHSAA is structured, outlining the roles of the CHSAA staff, Board of Directors and Legislative Council. Krueger reinforced the fact that the organization is membership driven and that policy and procedure are established by the membership. Lastly, the commissioner discussed the crucial role of the athletic/activities director and the realities of high turnover rates in that position. He explained that athletic/activities directors provide the vital leadership needed for school communities to provide these important opportunities for our students and that they are truly the glue that holds these valuable programs together.
There was a very productive question and answer segment that elicited excellent questions from school board members. The discussions stemming from the insightful questions and inquiries of the attendees provided for valuable dialogue.
