The first round of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Girls Tennis Team State Championships have been completed. The winning teams will advance to the quarterfinal round, which will be played at the home site of the higher seed on Friday.
In the 5A bracket, the top-eight seeds held true with all eight advancing to the quarterfinals. No. 1 Ralston Valley won by forfeit, and it’ll play No. 8 Regis Jesuit, which beat No. 9 Legacy, 6-1, in the first round.
No. 2 Cherry Creek and No. 7 Fairview will meet up on Friday after both sweeping its opponent in the first round. Cherry Creek defeated No. 15 Heritage and Fairview knocked out No. 10 Pine Creek.
No. 3 Valor Christian beat No. 14 Fort Collins, 6-1, tonight and No. 6 Fossil Ridge swept No. 11 Chatfield, 7-0. The two will both advance to face each other on Friday.
No. 4 Rocky Mountain and No. 5 Rock Canyon also advanced with both earning 6-1 wins. Rocky Mountain took down No. 13 Arapahoe and Rock Canyon defeated No. 12 Denver East.
The 4A bracket featured two upsets in the first round, as No. 9 Denver South escaped past No. 8 Dakota Ridge, 4-3, and No. 10 George Washington upset No. 7 Lewis-Palmer, 4-3. Denver South will advance to face top-seeded Kent Denver – which earned a 5-2 win over No. 16 Windsor tonight – and George Washington will next face No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain, which swept No. 15 Grand Junction.
No. 3 Mullen swept No. 14 Palmer Ridge in tonight’s first-round action, and No. 6 Erie advanced past No. 11 Niwot, 5-2.
Rounding out the quarterfinal round matchups will be No. 4 Air Academy vs. No. 5 Discovery Canyon. Air Academy swept No. 13 Thomas Jefferson tonight and Discovery Canyon used a 6-1 win over No. 12 Pueblo County to advance.
The 3A bracket featured a number of clean sweeps, as No. 1 D’Evelyn, No. 2 Vail Christian, No. 3 Peak to Peak, No. 4 Colorado Academy and No. 6 Prospect Ridge Academy all earned 7-0 wins in the first round, while No. 5 Holy Family and No. 9 Dawson School advanced by forfeit. D’Evelyn defeated No. 16 Delta, Vail Christian got past No. 15 Timnath, Peak to Peak knocked out No. 14 Resurrection Christian, Colorado Academy took down No. 13 Lutheran and Prospect Ridge Academy cruised past Colorado Springs School.
No. 7 Eaton also advanced, narrowly getting past No. 10 Northfield, 4-3.
