3A Boys Golf Region 1: Montezuma Cortez Captures Team and Individual Crowns

CORTEZ – Host school Montezuma Cortez reigned supreme at the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 3A boys golf region 1 regional, as the captured first place on both the team and individual leaderboards.

Montezuma Cortez won the team regional by shooting 13-over 229 overall, leaving the Peak to Peak Pumas (23-over 239) as the runner-up.

Both Montezuma Cortez and Peak to Peak had multiple golfers place among the top-10 individuals. Montezuma Cortez boasted three such golfers, with individual champion Vince Lopez (2-under 70), fourth-place finisher Zye Kuenzler (6-over 78), and eighth-place finisher Gavin Frost (9-over 81). Meanwhile, Peak to Peak’s Om Mathur (3-over 75) and Jack Brayman (5-over 77) finished in second and third, respectively.

The five individual golfers to finish in the top 10 who weren’t represented by either Montezuma Cortez or Peak to Peak were Manitou Springs sophomore Hayden Dorsey (7-over 79), Pagosa Springs junior Johnathon Smith (7-over 79), Pueblo East senior Jayden Padilla (8-over 80), Canon City junior Bret Jones (11-over 83), and The Classical Academy senior Carter Miller (11-over 83).

CHSAA’s 2024 3A Boys Golf State Championship will be played at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7 and 8.
