Gymnastics: Arvada West, Standley Lake Claim Regional Titles

AURORA — Arvada West (Class 5A) and Standley Lake (4A) won titles during the regional gymnastics competition held Saturday at Arvada West High School.

A-West led the 5A field with a score of 177.375, while Standley Lake headed 4A with a 178.175.

Arvada West won the team title with a score of 177.375, while Broomfield took second with 176.700 points and Poudre School District was third with 170.950 points. Thornton took fourth with a score of 165.850 and Combine was fifth with 154.700 points.

The Wildcats’ Layla Petz claimed the individual all-around title with 37.63 points. Poudre School District’s Olivia Watkins was second with 35.85 points and Broomfield’s Liliana Wojahn took third with 35.68 points. Arvada West’s Kaliea Nicholas (35.05) and Kira Taormina (34.85 were fourth and fifth, respectively. 

In addition to the all-around title, Petz also won bars (9.750) and vault (9.300), while she finished third on floor with a score of 9.450 and tied for fourth with Thornton’s Evie LeFree on beam (9.125). 

On bars, Wojahn was second with a score of 8.900. Taormina took third with a score of 8.800, while Watkins was fourth (8.775) and Broomfield’s Keira La Hue was fifth with a score of 8.675. 

On beam, Broomfield’s Alexa Darlin took gold wtih a score of 9.500, while Arvada West’s Ava Peterson was second at 9.425. Broomfield’s Kaya Duncan – who won the floor exercise with a score of 9.675 – took third on beam (9.425).

Behind Duncan on floor was Thornton’s Evie LeFree with a score of 9.550. Darlin was fourth at 9.250 and Broomfield’s Aspen Palillian was fifth (9.150). 

On vault, Watkins was second (9.200), Wojahn third (9.100), Duncan fourth (9.100) and Thornton’s Ashley Tefft fifth (9.050).

Standley Lake captured the 4A team title with a score of 178.175, while Elizabeth was second at 173.950 and Green Mountain took third (162.825). Loveland finished fourth wtih a score of 161.825.

Standley Lake and Elizabeth dominated the individual events, with the two schools combining to sweep the top-five individual all-around finishers, in addition to the top-five finishers on beam, vault and floor, as well. 

Elizabeth’s Braeleigh Melsness won the individual all-around wtih a score of 36.98 while Standley Lake’s Merrick Nakatsu was second (36.58), Kara Sundbye was third (35.80) and Isabel Rice was fourth (34.93). Elizabeth’s Kassidy McMillan took fifth with a score of 34.35.

Melsness also won the beam with a score of 9.300, while she finished second to Nakatsu on bars and second to Standley Lake’s Kira White on both vault and floor. Nakatsu won bars with a score of 9.050, while Melsness scored 8.900. Standley Lake’s Ava Vicek took third on bars with a score of 8.800, while Green Mountain’s Madeline Rice was fourth (8.600) and Sundbye was fifth at 8.500.

White won floor with a score of 9.625 and vault with a score of 9.575, while Melsness was second on floor (9.475) and tied for second on vault (9.300). Standley Lake swept the rest of the top-five on floor, with Nakatsu taking third (9.450), Isabel Rice fourth (9.250) and Sundbye fifth (9.150).

Standley Lake also claimed four of the top-five spots on vault, with Nakatsu tying Melsness for second with a score of 9.300. Rice (9.200) and Sundbye (9.100) took fourth and fifth, respectively. 

On beam, Sundbye was second (9.050), followed by Rice in third (9.025) and Elizabeth’s Sydney Tichota in fourth (8.850). Standley Lake’s Liza Marscher finished fifth with a score of 8.800.
