5A Football: Two Upsets in First Round

AURORA – No. 17 Grandview and No. 20 Cherokee Trail were the only lower-seeed teams to post victories in the first round of the 5A state football playoffs this weekend.

Grandview defeated No. 16 Denver East 17-3 to set up a second-round matchup with No. 1 Cherry Creek, while Cherokee Trail knocked off No. 13 Castle View 25-7 and now faces No. 4 Columbine.

Other first-round winners were No. 9 Erie, No. 10 Chatfield, No. 11 Arapahoe, No. 12 Regis Jesuit, No. 14 Arvada West and No. 15 Fossil Ridge.

The top eight seeds all received first-round byes.

Erie defeated No. 24 Overland 48-6 and moved into a second-round matchup with No. 8 Pine Creek.

Regis Jesuit was a 45-14 winner over No. 21 Eaglecrest to advances and play No. 5 Valor Christian.

Fossil Ridge won 49-7 against No. 18 Mullen and will now play No. 2 Mountain Vista.

Chatfield’s 36-9 victory over No. 23 Rock Canyon set up a meeting with No. 7 Fairview.

Arvada West beat No. 22 Douglas County 59-29 and moves into a second-round game against No. 3 Ralston Valley.

And Arapahoe outscored No. 22 Douglas County 49-35 to advance to a second-round contest against No. 6 Legend.
