AURORA – The quarterfinalists for the inaugural season of Splatoon, which will all advance to the in-person final for the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 2024 Esports Fall State Championships, have been determined.
The first round of play took place on Friday, Nov. 22, with the eight winners advancing to the in-person final at Localhost in Lakewood on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
The lone upset of the first round came between The Squidbusters (John F. Kennedy), which were seeded ninth, and PHS Inkpalas (Poudre), which were seeded eighth. The Squidbusters advanced with a 3-0 win.
Top-seeded Mountain Vista Big Swig Express (Mountain Vista) defeated No. 16 Hornets Splatoon (Pueblo County), 3-0, while No. 2 Puddle of Squids (Lakewood) swept No. 15 Splatoon JV (Cherry Creek). No. 3 Creek Cephalopod Army (Cherry Creek) knocked of Hoehne Farmers (Hoehne), 3-0, and No. 4 Chatfield Splatoon Varsity (Chatfield) got past No. 13 Valor Eagles (Valor Christian), 3-0. No. 5 Wicked-Fresh Salmon (Ponderosa) defeated No. 12 RMHS Lobos Varsity (Rocky Mountain), 3-1, and No. 6 DCCHS Splat Varsity (Discovery Canyon) knocked off No. 11 VRHS Splatoon (Vista Ridge), 3-1. No. 7 Falcon Fresh (Highlands Ranch) rounds out the teams advancing, as it swept No. 10 Carnival of Fools (Arvada), 3-0, in the first round.
The quarterfinal round will feature No. 1 Mountain Vista Big Swig Express against No. 9 The Squidbusters, No. 2 Puddle of Squids vs. No. 7 Falcon Fresh, No. 3 Creek Cephalopod Army vs. No. 6 DCCHS Splat Varsity and No. 4 Chatfield Splatoon Varsity vs. No. 5 Wicked-Fresh Salmon.
Quarterfinal round play will begin at 2 p.m., followed by the semifinals at 3 p.m. and the finals at 4 p.m. A trophy presentation will take place immediately after the championship round.
