Developing Leadership Through Sport Symposium, April 23

AURORA – The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) and the CU-Boulder Center for Leadership invite high school athletes to attend the Developing Leadership Through Sport Symposium on Wednesday, April 23 in Boulder. Registration is now full

This one-day conference is dedicated to enhancing leadership skills through sports. Attendees will hear from top college coaches, CU Boulder student-athletes who will present their leadership research, and CHSAA staff members who will help align your sports leadership mission.

Additionally, high school teams that have successfully integrated leadership training into their practice plans will share their best practices.

Schools are encouraged to bring up to four athletes and one coach, ideally selecting next year’s athletic team captains rather than this year’s seniors, to the event. Current freshmen are not eligible to attend.

The event will take place at the Williams Village Center Multipurpose Room (500 30th Street, Boulder 80303) and the registration fee is $150 per school (includes one chaperone and up to four students). Breakfast, lunch and conference materials will be included, with an on-campus parking permit being provided upon receipt of the completed registration form

The day will begin at 7:45 a.m. and will wrap at 2 p.m.

Event highlights include:

  • Leadership from a Coach’s Perspective
  • Discover how you can lead effectively in your current role
  • University Student-Athlete Panel Discussion
  • High School Student-Athlete Workshop

The morning session will feature thoughts from Stefanie Johnson – an associate professor of Organizational Leadership and Information and the Director of the Center for Leadership at CU Boulder – Danny Sanchez – a 14-year head coach of the CU Boulder women’s soccer program – and staff from CU Boulder Athletics’ Psychological Health & Performance staff.

The afternoon session will feature lunch, icebreakers and then presentations by Kylie Lahey, LCSW, an assistant director with CU Athletics’ Psychological Health & Performance; Dave Callan, Scripps Leadership and Career for Student-Athletes;  and a high school roundtable on best practices.

CHSAA Commissioner Mike Krueger and Associate Commissioner Bethany Brookens will provide the closing remarks.
