COLORADO SPRINGS — No one should ever question Jacob Benson.

Benson, who proudly wears the Platte Canyon uniform, attends South Park High School and does a majority of his training on his own in the hills of Fairplay. Two times a week this season, he made the 40 minute drive down Highway 85 to run with his teammates in Bailey and on Saturday he was rewarded for his effort.

Benson became the first individual state champion for Platte Canyon, but you can rest assured he still bleeds Burros green and gold.

“It is an amazing feeling and there are really no words to describe it,” said Benson, who crossed the finish line four second ahead of Salida’s Taylor Stack in 16 minutes, 46 seconds. “I just go at a pace that feels comfortable and that I know I can hold for a long time and then towards the end give it everything I’ve got.”

Platte Canyon coach Troy Phillips bolted out of the stand and down to the stadium floor to congratulate his state champ.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to have him and we are just overjoyed for him,” Phillips said. “He has run with a lot of adversity because he has to train by himself a lot of the times. This has been building since his sophomore year when he finished 12th and then second last year. We were gunning for a state championship all season long.”

Staying with the day of firsts theme on the boys side: It was the first team championship for Frontier Academy. The Wolverines placed all four scoring runners in the top 17 to finish with a score of 44 points and edge second place Lamar (55).

Leading the way for the Frontier foursome was senior Chris Baker, who finished fifth in 17:16.9. Drake Bytnar, Sean Tyrrell and Brody Lewis all ran well for coach Brett Shanklin, whose team went 1-2-3-4 last week at regionals and carried a load of momentum into state.

“We’ve done a lot of thing over the last four years to get to this point,” Shanklin said. “Finally they just put it together. They jut continued to get stronger and we always train with that goal in mind and continue to work for that. It has paid dividends and as the season went on they got stronger and stronger.”

On the girls side, Bayfield’s Eva Lou Edwards repeated as champion and in the process took 24 seconds off of her time from a year ago. She blistered the Norris Penrose Events Center course in 18 minutes, 41.6 second and was 1:26 faster than runner-up Makayla Santos of Frontier Academy.

Not bad for a girl who was admittedly burned out.

“It doesn’t feel different, just because I didn’t have a lot of excitement coming into today. I was most excited to be here with my team, just because last year I had to do it by myself,” said Edwards, who has also qualified for the Class 5A state tennis tournament for Durango, runs track and plays basketball.

“I’m a little burned out right now, because I usually play tennis in the spring, but I ran track instead. So I’ve been running and running and running, so I’m going to play basketball and then see if my love for running comes back. Hopefully it does.”

Salida’s girls put on an impressive show in the team race with tiny team total of 35 points, easily distancing itself from second place Estes Park (94).

The Spartans had all six of their runners in the top 32, and all four scoring runners were in the top 18. leading the way for Salida was the sophomore duo of Sydney Fesermeyer (3rd in 20:16.8) and Phoebe Powell (6th in 20:34.1).

  • Flooding won’t affect postseason qualification for softball, volleyball or boys soccer

Teams unable to reschedule games postponed due to the recent flooding will not be penalized when it comes to postseason seeding.

Volleyball, softball and boys soccer all use MaxPreps’ ranking system in determining qualifiers for playoffs and state tournaments. The ranking systems are derived from a formula, and the inability to reschedule games will not affect the rankings.

“The MaxPreps rankings system doesn’t arbitrarily award points for simply playing and winning or losing an additional game,” said Gerry Valerio, MaxPreps’ State Association Manager for Colorado. “The system takes the total body of work for each team to determine the rankings, regardless of the number of games played.  So, for those volleyball, softball and soccer teams who aren’t able to reschedule all their games, their rankings won’t be negatively impacted by it.”

Similarly, football’s Wild Card points formula is adjusting for any cancelled games.

However, athletes must attend regional qualifiers for any sport which has them — such as tennis, cross country or gymnastics — in order to qualify for their respective state championships.

  • High expectations surround The Classical Academy cross country — again

The Classical Academy Cross country coach Alan Versaw. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
The Classical Academy Cross country coach Alan Versaw. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Here was the initial roster: Seven boys, three girls. Six of those kids were still in middle school.

“We were running as individuals,” coach Alan Versaw said recently. “But it was fun.”

“To this day,” he added, “the things I learned from them, the sort of team things they set in place, are still present. It is uncanny how much harkens back to the first year or two when there were just so few kids there. They just wanted to go out and conquer everything they could conquer.”

Versaw’s program has grown to the point that it is now among the state’s elite. The girls have won ten consecutive state championships dating to 2003 and the boys have five in that same span.

“I was completely unaware of the sort of stuff that would follow,” Versaw said. “Not in my wildest dreams could I imagine the kind of program it became.”

The coach himself didn’t even run cross country in high school. He went to Sangre de Cristo, near Alamosa, where he played football and ran track. The school didn’t have a cross country program.

“I don’t think I would’ve run cross country if we had,” Versaw said. “I wasn’t tuned that way quite yet.”

In college, he started participating in road races, but a bone chip in his knee forced surgery and he stopped running — for 20 years. He didn’t pick it back up again until started TCA’s program.

“I knew that I really, really liked the kind of mindset that came out for cross country,” Versaw said.

By 2003, the girls had won a Class 3A state title. A year later, the boys won their first. Things exploded from there, and Versaw’s Titans started to dominate. In 2006, both teams won state championships. In 2009, TCA girls went 1-2-3, placed five runners in the top ten and six in the top 13.

Last year, both programs made the leap to 4A. The boys finished eighth — “Last year was kind of a tough year for the guys to bridge up to 4A,” Versaw said, noting they returned just one runner from the 2011 state meet — and the girls won.

“The depth of the other teams is so different” in 4A, Versaw said. “3A has some really talented individuals, but we were going, any given year, seven or eight or nine girls deep and there weren’t 3A schools that could match up.

“You know, a couple of (the girls) told me that at the end of the season: ‘Coach, I was really kind of skeptical at the beginning of the season, not sure what to make of it, but it was a lot more fun at the end,’ ” Versaw added. “And that’s easy to understand. What’s more fun? Going up a 14er where you’ve got to use your hands and you’re hanging out in the air a little, or just strolling up? That’s the kind of difference it is.”

This season, the girls opened as the No. 1 team in the preseason 4A Colorado Track XC/CHSAANow.com poll. The boys are No. 3.

So, yeah, expectations are high. Again.

The girls return five of the seven girls from last year’s state meet team.

“We went about 11 girls deep, really strong last year, and we only lost two as seniors,” Versaw said. “We just had a really good summer. A lot of dedication from the kids. Yes, they lifted the level of their training, but I think they also did it in a smart way. There’s a pretty tight bonding among these girls, and I think they’re committed to one another.

“They know what it takes,” he continued. “The eyes were open kind of wide last year, in 4A, and they didn’t know what to expect. I think they made some adjustments over the last year and I think that’s why I saw the kind of summer I did with their training.”

Six of seven boys from last year’s state meet team are back.

“Eighth isn’t bad, but they had a whole new picture and a whole new mindset this year of what it takes,” Versaw said. “They worked harder this summer than ever before, and their sights are high.”
