  • Dakota Ridge remains No. 1, but 5A softball rankings continue to change

Things remain crazy in Class 5A softball this season. For the first time this season, the No. 1 team in CHSAANow’s rankings stayed put, but five different teams received first-place votes.

It speaks to the season as a whole, where seemingly every week another ranked team is upset.

So while No. 1 Dakota Ridge actually extended the gap its has on No. 2 Brighton this week, things remained shaky behind them. Castle View moved from No. 8 to No. 3, Chaparral went from unranked to No. 5 and Fossil Ridge from No. 9 to No. 7.

Dakota Ridge (six), Brighton, Chaparral, Mountain Range (two) and Fossil Ridge all received first-place votes this week.

The 4A poll continued to be led by Frederick and added Pueblo West (No. 7) and Woodland Park (No. 10).

In 3A, Strasburg extended its stay at No. 1. Cedaredge (No. 7) and Rocky Ford (No. 10) both joined this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Complete rankings for each class are below.

  • Mountain View softball riding potent offense in unbeaten start

LOVELAND — A season ago, Mountain View’s softball team was talented but off to a shaky start.

The Mountain Lions began 3-6 with tough losses to Broomfield, Pueblo West, and rivals Thompson Valley and Loveland. They were beaten soundly by Class 4A powerhouses Wheat Ridge and Frederick by a combined score of 20-0. Since then, coach Randy Felton’s team forgot how to lose.

Mountain View, winners of 22 of its last 23 games, unleashed offensive fireworks during a 13-game win streak in 2013. The balanced lineup scored 10.4 runs per game during the stretch, claimed the Northern Conference crown, and reached the 4A quarterfinals before bowing out to the eventual champion, Wheat Ridge, 9-4.

The Mountain Lions haven’t looked back since.

“We’re deep all the way through our lineup. Right now all twelve of our players can hit well. (Last Thursday), we took three of our starters out and had them sit and I still think most of our complete lineup had multiple hits,” Felton said of Mountain View’s recent 15-1 thrashing of Boulder. “Then we put those starters back in for three other starters and they all got hits. I think we’re hitting up and down the order and we’re putting up a lot of runs.”

A lot of hits and a lot of runs have led Mountain View to a perfect 9-0 record this season and a No. 3 ranking in the current 4A CHSAANow softball poll behind familiar foes Wheat Ridge (No. 2) and Frederick (No. 1).

“I did think our offense this year was going to be stronger than it has in the past,” Felton said. “We’ve actually added a couple more pieces, so when we get up to sixth, seventh, eighth, I’m kind of like, ‘Alright let’s go.’

    Broomfield Mountain View softball
    (Pam Wagner)

“We don’t have to be at the top of our order. We have as good a chance at getting runners in the bottom as at the top. It’s just that some of those in the middle drive in more runs. I’ve been very pleased with our offense and I did expect they would do pretty well.”

In most games, Mountain View’s offense has been downright scary at just over 13 runs scored per outing. The Mountain Lions rank first in 4A in total runs (119), first in runs batted in (105), fourth in batting (.454), fifth in slugging (.612), fifth in on-base percentage (.516), and fifth in stolen bases (37).

They will need to ride the offensive outburst throughout the year with good pitching but without a dominant strikeout starter.

The backbone of the powerful squad beyond the obvious, offensive firepower, has been experience with four seniors who have started at least three years. Courtney Baeckel, Taylor Seely, Jerhen Montez and Gianna Melaragno form the middle of the infield.

“Courtney Baeckel is kind of that glue for our whole team,” Felton said. “She is a senior this year and has been an all-conference player for a few years. Her intangibles are what probably helps us the most. She’s probably one of the best instinctive base runners that I’ve seen in our program. She has great leadership out on the field making sure people are in the right situation at the right time.

“She does a lot of other things, but then she also puts up big numbers,” Felton added. “She’s one of the best defensive players that we’ve had. At first base, some of the plays she makes and some of the plays that she saves people on are huge.”

Baeckel, batting .613 with 17 runs batted in and six stolen bases in nine games, has been the main sparkplug for a team hoping to reach the semifinals for the second time in school history.

“Every year our number one goal is to try and win our conference,” said Felton, who was an assistant during Mountain View’s last semis appearance in 2008. “Then we try to get through regionals and we try to get to state. I always tell them, getting to the final 16 is a big goal to have, because there’s not that many that make it. Just making a state appearance is a pretty big thing.

“We’ve been to the state tournament seven out of the last eight years, I think, so it’s getting to the point where our seniors now have gone to the state playoffs every year, but we can’t get past the final eight.”

Once there, the Mountain Lions hope to make some noise.

“Obviously our number one goal is to win it,” Felton added. “Everyone’s goal ultimately should be to win it, but a smaller goal is to make it farther than we have lately, which would be the final four. Our goal is to get to the final four and ultimately to win a state championship, but we also know the Fredericks and the Wheat Ridges and the Eries. We know that if we don’t play the best that weekend, we’re not going to win. If they play better than we do, they’re going to win.

“I can’t give that goal of we should win, because we’re that good,” Felton concluded. “We know how tough those other teams are.”

  • Dakota Ridge latest No. 1 team in 5A softball rankings

Is there a clear-cut favorite in Class 5A softball? Three weeks into the season, it doesn’t appear that way.

For the second week in a row, there is a new No. 1-ranked team. Dakota Ridge takes over atop CHSAANow.com’s poll, and follows Legacy (preseason) and Brighton (last week) as top teams in the classification.

The Eagles are 7-2-0 this season and went 2-1 last week with wins over Castle View and Erie. Dakota Ridge also beat Legend earlier this season, but did drop a game to Mountain Range last week.

Brighton dropped to No. 2 following a loss to Columbine last week. Legend moved up to No. 3 after going 3-0 last week with wins over Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest and Grandview.

Mountain Range, meanwhile, moved up to No. 4 from No. 9. Legacy rounds out 5A’s top five teams.

Columbine is the lone newcomer in 5A, joining at No. 10.

Frederick (4A) and Strasburg (3A), the other two No. 1 teams, stayed the same this week.

4A added Windsor (No. 8) this week, while 3A added Brush (No. 9) and Skyline (No. 10).

ARVADA — It was an old-fashioned pitching duel through four innings Wednesday at Ralston Valley High School’s softball field.

Defending Class 4A state champion Wheat Ridge, ranked No. 2 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A softball rankings, was locked in a scoreless non-league game with Ralston Valley. The Mustangs are ranked No. 8 in 5A.

“It’s always fun when two teams are competing and it’s three-up, three-down,” Wheat Ridge sophomore pitcher Riley Scott said.

The Farmers’ offense came alive late with a pair of three-run innings in the fifth and seven to eventually claim a 6-1 victory. Scott picked up her fourth victory in the circle allowing just an RBI single by Ralston Valley sophomore Sydney Harsh in the bottom of the fifth inning that broke up her shutout.

Scott has appeared to solidify herself as the Farmers’ ace after Wheat Ridge coach Marty Stricklett began the season using a combo of five different pitchers.

“She (Scott) is throwing strikes and living low. That is the key to being a pitcher,” Stricklett said of Scott, who didn’t surrender an extra-base hit Wednesday afternoon. “You have to live low. She is doing a good job for us as a sophomore.”

Wheat Ridge’s offense failed to capitalize on a pair of situations in the third and fourth innings. The Farmers (6-2) had runners at second and third with no outs, but Ralston Valley junior pitcher Rylie Strong was able to work out of the jams on both occasions without giving up a run.

“I thought Rylie (Strong) did a pretty good job. Our defense did fairly well behind her,” Ralston Valley coach Wendy Davies said. “We just for some reason didn’t hit the ball well today.”

The Farmers’ offense finally broke through with a two-out RBI single up the middle by senior Analece Apodaca in the top of the fifth inning. Wheat Ridge senior Grace White roped an RBI triple and eventually scored on a throwing error to give Wheat Ridge a 3-0 lead.

“It was huge,” Scott said of White’s triple. “We really needed some hits. Our team was struggling with our bats and we needed something to get us going.”

Wheat Ridge tacked on some insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. White, along with fellow seniors Jacquelyn Miller and Mary Sand, each knocked in a run to push the Farmers’ lead to 6-1.

Ralston Valley junior pitcher Rylie Strong held Wheat Ridge’s powerful offense in check for the majority of the non-league game Wednesday. However, the Farmers mustered up a pair of three-run inning to take a 6-1 victory. (Dennis Pleuss)

Despite the victory, Stricklett wasn’t too pleased with a few fielding and mental errors.

“You’ve got to go through a gauntlet if you want to get to where you want to be,” Stricklett said of the Farmers’ tough non-league schedule that includes a date against top-ranked Fredrick next Tuesday. “The girls are going to have to pick it up a notch. We have played a lot of tough teams, but it’s going to get a lot tougher from here on out.”

Ralston Valley (6-3) will get a crack at the defending 5A state champions when the Mustangs face Legacy at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Davies hopes to get her team a little healthier as the 5A Jeffco League schedule kicks into gear in less than two weeks. The Mustangs have been dealing with several injuries. Starting shortstop Malory Eldredge had to leave Wednesday’s game and didn’t return.

“We are trying to make it work with people in different positions,” Davies said. “We just need to have a practice where we have everybody in the same spot because it has changed every day.”
