  • Pueblo East softball aiming for a school first: back-to-back titles

    (Kim Orona)
    (Kim Orona)

PUEBLO — When the Pueblo East softball team began practice in August, history was in the back of the mind of the Eagles.

A year ago, Pueblo East’s softball squad won the school’s inaugural softball state title defeating a Niwot team led by pitcher Nickie Blue 4-2 in the Class 4A state championship. That team finished with a 24-0-1 record.

“Last year we were kind of going through it blind, and we didn’t know any better,” said Pueblo East star senior pitcher Katie Orona.

The win was extra special for the Eagles, who lost in the state title game in their previous four other trips in 1996 and 2001-2003. What’s more, Pueblo East’s softball team joined the school’s 1978 girls cross country team as the only teams to wear a state crown in the school’s history.

Now, the softball program wants to cement its legacy at the school by capturing back-to-back state championships.

The Eagles are well on their way. They are ranked No. 3 in CHSAANow.com’s latest 4A poll and sport a 15-3-1 record.

“We need to relax and not put the pressure on us,” veteran coach Ben Garcia said. “Last year, we didn’t really expect a lot, but we knew we had the capabilities, and that was the key. I think this year we have had great spurts, but we have also had situations where we have been very tense. We need to get back to the basics.”

The Eagles have won ten games in a row and have clinched their second consecutive South-Central League crown with an 12-0 mark. Pueblo East concluded its regular season with a 12-2 win against Pueblo West.

Now, the squad will take aim at Class 4A Regionals on Oct. 12. The top eight seeded teams will host four-team regionals. The top two finishers at each of the eight regionals advance to the state tournament Oct. 18-19 at Aurora Sports Complex.

“Obviously you want to host, that is the first thing, and I think we are set to do that,” Garcia said. “Right now, I think we are playing our best softball. We learned some lessons going up north playing against some of those teams (at the Erie tournament). Now, we know what we need to do and we just have to take care of ourselves.”

The Eagles’ defense is fueled by Orona. Heading into this week, Orona has a two-year record in the circle of 32-2-1. She has a 1.25 ERA this season with 124 strikeouts.

Pueblo East’s only in-state losses this season came at the Erie tourney to top-ranked Wheat Ridge (7-2) and Broomfield (4-1). They also tied No. 2 Erie 8-8.

Orona has verbally committed to play for Brown University in the Ivy League.

“If we peak around regionals and state we will be set,” Orona said. “There is a little bit more pressure because people have been studying me a little more. The key for me is to add something different to my pitching that they haven’t seen. I have added some different things since Erie and hopefully it will take people by surprise.”

Kelsey Laughlin, Pueblo East’s standout senior shortstop, also believes the Eagles are ready for the challenge ahead of them.

“The experience from last year definitely helps us,” said Laughlin, who is hitting .426 with 16 RBIs. “We didn’t want to have the losses we had at Erie, but they brought us back to reality and they have made us better.”

In addition Laughlin, second baseman Cheyenne Talmadge has sparked the offense from the lead-off position. The speedy Talmadge had a team-best .519 average.

“We just need to motivate ourselves and believe in ourselves, and our coaches,” said the junior Talmadge, who has verbally committed to play at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. “We definitely have more thirst to go out and win state again.”

Pueblo East actually does have a good mix of seniors and underclassmen contributing this season.

In addition to Talmadge, sophomore third baseman Jailen Minnich (.458, 15 RBIs) and the freshmen — center fielder Lauren Renck (.400) and catcher Chayanna Gallardo (.382) — also have been strong contributors.

“The kids who came back from last year, they are the ones who are helping our young ones,” Garcia said. “We have some great young ball players who are doing a super job, but the older players have taken them under their wings and realize that we can all do this together. Now, we just have to put everything together on the field and execute in all situations. If we can do that, I feel pretty good about our chances.”

It was anything but easy for Wheat Ridge softball to claim its sixth straight Class 4A Jeffco League title Monday afternoon.

The top-ranked 4A team in the CHSAANow.com poll needed to rally against conference rival and No. 7-ranked D’Evelyn (12-6, 6-1 in league) in the final two innings. Eventually, Wheat Ridge (16-1, 6-0) pulled out a 4-2 victory to clinch another league title.

“It was a great game and we expected that,” D’Evelyn coach Dan Porreco said. “Obviously, we wanted to be on top. A few things just didn’t go our way.”

The Farmers faced a 2-0 deficit on the Jaguars’ home field going to the top of the sixth inning.

D’Evelyn senior Beth Wilson scored on an RBI single by senior Cameryn Porter in third inning to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead. It was the first run Wheat Ridge had given up in league play this season. The Farmers had outscored conference opponents 63-0 heading into the showdown with D’Evelyn, who had outscored its league foes 80-11.

D’Evelyn extended the lead to 2-0 on an RBI single by senior Allison Heitsman in the bottom of the fifth inning that scored junior Erica Tilden.

Down to its final six outs and down two runs, Wheat Ridge coach Marty Stricklett gave some simple advice to his squad.

“I told them it was time to relax,” said Stricklett, who coached the Farmers to 4A state titles in 2008, 2010 and 2011. “We were too nervous and pressing. We were trying to do things we aren’t trained to do.”

Sophomore Christina Nelson took the advice and pounded a double off the wall to lead off the top of the sixth inning. Nelson scored on an RBI single by junior Grace White to get the Farmers on the board. White would later score on an RBI single by junior Erin Dalton to tie the game at 2.

“I always know my team is there to back me up 100 percent,” Wheat Ridge junior pitcher Jessica Salbato said. “I knew our offense would come through in the end.”

Sophomore Ann Marie Torres drove a rise ball that was at eye level by D’Evelyn junior pitcher Nicole Masters with one out in the top of the seventh.

“I just had to do my job and get a hit,” Torres said. “Thankfully it was a triple.”

Torres scored on an error when a fly ball to left field by junior Analece Apodaca was dropped. Salbato helped out her own cause driving home Apodaca for the final run of the game.

Salbato picked up her 13th victory on the mound this season. She struck out six and retired D’Evelyn in order in the final two innings. Masters was solid for the Jaguars striking out eight while holding the Farmers’ bats in check until the final two innings.

“(Masters) kept us off balance,” Stricklett said. “She did a great job.”

Wheat Ridge will close out its regular season at home against Alameda at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, before a non-league game against Ralston Valley at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3.

D’Evelyn has a non-league tilt at home against Denver East at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, before preparing for the regional/state qualifying tournaments scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12.

  • No. 6 Ralston Valley shuts out Columbine softball

Before turning its attention to the postseason, Ralston Valley softball has some unfinished business in the Class 5A Jeffco League.

The No. 6 ranked Mustangs took one step closer to a shot at winning their 10th conference softball title since Ralston Valley High School in Arvada opened during the 2000-01 school year. Ralston Valley (12-4, 5-1 in league) remained atop the 5A Jeffco standings with a 2-0 shutout victory at home Saturday morning against Columbine (11-4, 3-3).

Dakota Ridge (15-3, 6-1) is the only other 5A Jeffco team with one league loss going into the final week of the regular season. The Eagles used an eight-run fourth inning Saturday to hand rival Chatfield an 11-4 loss. It was Chatfield’s second conference loss. Ralston Valley edged Dakota Ridge 2-1 at the start of the conference schedule.

“I think until you get out of league that is what you concentrate on,” Ralston Valley coach Wendy Davies said. “You have to focus on one win at a time because if you don’t win those you aren’t going anywhere.”

While regional/state qualifying tournaments loom just around the corner (Saturday, Oct. 12), the Mustangs take pride in winning the always deep and competitive 5A Jeffco League.

“I definitely think league is important to all of us,” Ralston Valley senior Sierra Galbreath said. “I think that league (title) would prove how bad we’ve wanted it this whole season.”

Columbine had dropped its previous two conference games to Dakota Ridge and Pomona. However, the Rebels gave the Mustangs all they could handle. Columbine actually out-hit Ralston Valley by a six to three count, but three errors cost the young Rebels that start just two seniors.

“We know we’re good, but we are really young,” Columbine coach Robin Ortiz said. “What we talked about coming into the game is we couldn’t make mistakes. Ralston Valley is good enough that they’ll capitalize on mistakes.”

The Mustangs pushed across their first run in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Brenna Martinez was caught in a pickle between second and third base, but a throwing error allowed Martinez to escape and score.

Ralston Valley had opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings to extend its lead, but Columbine junior pitcher Madison Reuter was able to keep the Rebels within a run. The biggest jam Reuter was able to get out of was a bases loaded situation with Galbreath at the plate. Galbreath eventually flied out to center field to end the bottom of the fifth inning.

Reuter allowed three hits while walking three batters and striking out two. Ralston Valley senior McKenzie Sadler provided an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI double to the gap that scored Martinez.

Columbine threatened in the top of the seventh inning with singles by junior Shelby Copley and sophomore Alex Scheid to bring the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs. However, Ralston Valley sophomore pitcher Rylie Strong struck out pitch-hitter Kacey Cruz to end the game.

Strong allowed six hits and struck out five in her fourth shutout victory this season. She also retired 12 straight batters in the middle innings.

“I just have to make sure I throw my pitches in the right spots,” Strong said of protecting a one-run lead for the majority of the game. “I really don’t get nervous.”

Davies gave credit to her senior leadership, Strong for another solid outing and catcher Alexa Samuels for calling a good game behind the plate.

Ralston Valley finishes out its conference schedule with back-to-back games this Monday (Sept. 30) and Tuesday (Oct. 1). The Mustangs travel to Standley Lake for a 4:30 p.m. Monday before hosting Chatfield at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“I think the next two are going to be intense games,” Davies said. “We just have to take care of business on our own end.”

Columbine closes out its regular season against Arvada West and Chatfield before heading into the postseason.
