  • Team depth on display on first day of 5A boys tennis state tournament

DENVER — The level of play in Class 5A boys tennis has been on a steady rise, and looks to be at a high-water mark this fall.

The depth has turned the state tournament into one of the most competitive in recent years. A total of eight teams qualified all seven positions for the draw, which is the most since at least 2010.

Boulder, Broomfield, Chatfield, Cherry Creek, Denver East, Fairview, Mountain Vista and Regis Jesuit each qualified 11 players for the field.

“State’s more competitive than it’s been in a while,” said Denver East coach Mark Thalhofer.

The competition has also done something else to this state tournament: The team race is just that — a race. That’s a contrast to the past two decades or so, where Cherry Creek has won 19 of 21 championships in 5A, including the last four.

“It really is a race this year,” said Regis Jesuit coach Laura Jones. “We’re here to play and really try to win. Where some years, you come and you just know, ‘Well, we’re just going to do the best that we can.’ But there are probably six teams that could walk away with that state championship this year.”

Added Chad Tsuda, Fairview’s coach: “That’s what’s fun. This year, obviously (Cherry) Creek is the favorite, but there’s a lot of teams that can compete this year, one through seven positions. It’s not just a given anymore, come tomorrow, that Cherry Creek is (going to clinch a title). Which, obviously has been true in the past.”

With having 11 players in the tournament, “You have a great chance” at a team title, said Doug Kazarosian, the coach at Boulder. “In the past, it wasn’t that way. There were nowhere near as many horses in the stalls for all the schools.”

    So why the change?

“I think it’s two-fold,” said Jones, the Regis coach. “One, I think Cherry Creek lost some really good players that could be playing for them and that always pull them to be up on a pedestal up above all of us. But I do think that there are other teams that are more competitive all the way through their lineup, not just at one and two singles. There is a lot of good doubles coaching going on.”

Doubles. It’s a hot topic at the 5A tourney. And it’s the link as to why team depth would be on the rise: The depth within the teams themselves is on the rise.

“I feel like what’s happening is a lot more athletic kids are coming out for tennis,” said Mountain Vista coach Jim Flanigan. “And you’re seeing it more at the lower positions, kids who necessarily didn’t play tennis growing up. They picked it up in high school.”

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

“For us,” said Kazarosian, the Boulder coach, “it’s the baseball players. North Boulder in particular has a really strong program and history there. So these baseball players come in with amazing hands, and coachability. It really instantly adds depth because you’re adding great, dexterous athletes.”

It’s something that points toward the growth of the sport.

“Getting more kids involved in tennis is something that I think can only help tennis in this state,” said Jones, the Regis coach. “I think it’s a good trend and I certainly would love to see it continue. … More people with different uniforms on all out there playing each other. It’s pretty cool.”

Cherry Creek coach Art Quinn took it a step further.

The growth, he said, “is all over the place. Singles, doubles. I think teams have continued to develop and get deeper throughout the years, which is good for everybody. It’s good for the sport.”

And while it could be easy for Cherry Creek, the reigning power, to dismiss the rise in depth, the Bruins welcome it.

“After many decades — having been a player myself at Cherry Creek — certainly, we have our own pursuit of excellence ourselves,” Quinn said, “but it never hurts to have somebody chasing you down to make you run a little faster.”

After the first day of play, the parity in the team race was evident. Cherry Creek, still favored to win a fifth-straight title, leads the field with 21 points. Fairview was second with 18. Behind them? Regis Jesuit and Denver East are tied with 15, and Boulder has 11 points.

It’s a race for the title.

“That just makes this tournament so much more fun,” said Tsuda, the Fairview coach. “It’s nice to see no easy matches. You’ve got to be ready to play Thursday at 9.”

“Hopefully more parity will make us all better,” added Quinn, the Cherry Creek coach.

The depth, the competition, the parity — whatever you want to call it — has injected energy into the environment at Gates Tennis Center, which plays host to the 5A tournament.

“I think it generates a heck of a lot more excitement down here,” Kazarosian said. “It’s an incredibly energetic place to begin with, but when you have that kind of depth of field, it goes beyond a puncher’s chance. You really feel like everyone’s got a legit shot at pulling out a team victory.”

  • Discovery Canyon freshman looking to follow brother’s path at 4A boys state tennis tournament

PUEBLO — When Discovery Canyon freshman Nick Lorenz saw his brother, Luke, win the Class 4A state tennis tournament at No. 1 singles, he knew right away that he wanted to follow in Luke’s footsteps.

And after his 6-2, 6-1 win over freshman Brett Finan in Friday’s semifinals, he’s on the verge of matching his brother’s accomplishment.

Lorenz will meet Kent Denver’s Casey Ross on Saturday for the No. 1 singles title, adding to his family’s trophy case and giving him something to hold over Luke’s head.

“Immediately I thought I had to be better than him,” Lorenz said. “I have to win more state titles just to one-up him.”

But it’s all just in good fun. Lorenz said coming into Friday’s semifinals, he was getting nothing but encouragement and support from Luke who would love nothing more than having his brother join him in the record books.

It’s been quite a journey for Lorenz this season. Coming in, he and Thunder coach Mike Humphrey knew that the ability to win state was there, it was just a matter of putting everything together. The two decided that just reaching finals was the goal they would aim for this season. Now that he’s there, Lorenz is playing with house money at this point.

“He made the finals and he’s hit all of his other goals throughout the season,” Humphrey said. “We’re just hoping that he plays as well tomorrow as he did today.”

That task could prove to be difficult as Lorenz is slated to meet Kent Denver junior Casey Ross who came away with a win over Lorenz at regionals last week. Ross beat Niwot’s Max Petrak 6-1, 6-1 to advance.

The Sun Devils have representatives in the finals of every bracket, which should make Saturday fun as they try and battle it out with Colorado Academy for the team title.

“That was kind of the forecast,” Kent Denver coach Randy Ross said. “It’s going to be an interesting match tomorrow.”

Colorado Academy was left stunned Thursday when their No. 1 singles player Mac Mease fell to Finan which hurt the Mustangs in their hunt for the team title. They were able to bounce back and reach the finals in the remaining six brackets.

Now the Mustangs maintain a shot at winning the team title, but will need to win all of their final matches to clinch it.

“We are excited to be there,” Colorado Academy coach Brian Singer said. “We’ve got six positions, the most we’ve ever done in the finals. Last year we had five. It’s going to come down to a lot of fun tennis.”

Adding to the excitement is the fact that the Colorado Academy and Kent Denver kids play each other year round and not just in high school competition.

“Our kids know their kids; their kids know ours,” Singer said. “It’s a matter of getting out there and seeing who’s going to control their emotions and hit the big shots at the time.”

Saturday’s final matches at Pueblo City Park are scheduled for a 9 a.m. start.

  • Boulder’s Kap Smith finally reaches 5A boys state tennis finals

    DENVER – It was inevitable.

One of the Smiths who reached last year’s Class 5A state tennis semifinals was destined to be in this year’s championship match.

Kap Smith of Boulder and Kai Smith of Denver East, who both lost their semifinal matches at No. 1 singles in last year’s state tournament, squared off in this year’s semis Friday morning at the Gates Tennis Center.

Give the nod to the sophomore from Boulder as Kap earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory and a spot in Saturday’s championship match.

Kap Smith will face Ryan James of Cherry Creek at 9 a.m. Saturday. James won his semifinal over Ben Antonsen of Mountain Vista 6-0, 6-3. As with Smith, James has yet to give up a set in three tournament matches.

In both sets, Kap Smith had to break serve just once to earn the edge over Kai, a junior.

Though they played each other just once during the high school season, Kap and Kai are very familiar with each other’s game, having played in USTA tournaments. Kap won over Kai in last year’s third-place state match.

That could work as an advantage, knowing the other’s game, but Kap said it brings out another positive.

“It’s good because I have to do something to change it up,” he said of forcing himself to try something new.

Smith looks at Saturday’s championship as just another match, albeit against another strong opponent. He’s not fazed, however, by the challenge of playing against Cherry Creek.

“Maybe I’ll just create a Boulder legacy,” he said of starting a new tradition as a Panther sophomore.

He is one of three Panthers who could begin that trend as all three Boulder singles players will play for a state title – Jackson Hawk playing No. 2 and Cutter Esson at No. 3.

Cherry Creek, which had entries in all three singles and all four doubles semifinals, advance five of its seven entries to sew up its fifth consecutive team title. The Bruins finished the day with 69 points; Boulder was second with 41.

The Bruins will face off against Regis Jesuit in three of the four doubles finals; the teams will play for the third-place crown at No. 4 doubles.

  • Kent Denver in control early at 4A boys state tennis tournament

    4A boys state tennis
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

PUEBLO — Kent Denver isn’t messing around.

The school’s boys tennis team came into this week’s Class 4A state tennis tournament with players in each bracket, and through the first day, each of them had advanced to Friday’s semifinals.

And as a result, the Sun Devils have become the early favorites to grasp the team state championship.

“It’s the first day and there’s a lot of matches still to be played,” Sun Devils coach Randy Ross said. “The people winning matches in the first round are just getting their feet wet and just working their way into this environment. I don’t put a lot of stock into what happens on the first day.”

But he may want to. Feeling like Colorado Academy was the team to beat coming in, the Sun Devils are holding off the Mustangs, thanks to some freshman help from Peak to Peak.

In the No. 1 singles bracket, the Mustangs were dealt a huge blow as Mac Mease fell to Brett Finan 6-4, 6-3. Mease finished third in last year’s state tournament as a junior and was hoping to bounce back for a title in his senior year.

“I was playing really well today,” Finan said. “The first round was really hard, but it was a really good match and it just shocked him, I guess.”

That loss for Colorado Academy helped the Sun Devils seize control of the tournament, though several teams are nipping right on their heels.

Among them is Niwot who got big wins from Max Petrak in No. 1 singles and Allen Fu in No. 3 singles. The Cougars finished Thursday with 15 points, only 4 behind the Sun Devils and one behind second place Colorado Academy.

“I was thinking if we could sneak in at third or fourth as a team, that would be good,” Niwot coach Miikka Keronen said. “With how young we are with four freshmen and three other guys that have never been here, we have seven guys that haven’t been in this atmosphere.”

But sometimes, the lack of experience can be a good thing. There were a couple of major upsets early in the tournament on an individual level.

On top of Finan’s win over Mease, Discovery Canyon freshman Nick Lorenz took down CSCS senior Jeremiah Hansen 6-0, 6-2. Lorenz then took down Fountain Valley’s Vinay Merchant 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to move to Friday’s semifinal round.

“I really like team events,” Lorenz said. “I play a lot of USTA tournaments and that’s all individual, it’s more stressful playing in team events, but so far I’ve handled it well.”

Friday figures to be the key day in terms of team scores. With each trip to the finals worth five points, big swings can potentially be made at the top of the standings.

Ross hopes that his boys can hang on and come away with a championship that he thought Colorado Academy was in line to win.

“We have nine guys out of our 11 that have been here,” Ross said. “They know what it’s like and how to work your way into this thing.”
