  • Bruner, Griffin lead Ponderosa boys lacrosse over Pueblo West

    PUEBLO – This wasn’t a statement game for the Ponderosa High School boys lacrosse team.

    Mustangs’ coach Pat Tierney, however, was satisfied with the final result.

    Blake Bruner scored six goals and Jack Griffin tacked on three more, powering the Mustangs to a 15-7 win over Pueblo West Thursday in a Pikes Peak League game at Cyclones Stadium.

    “This was a tough game,” Tierney said. “Sometimes you think you are just going to walk into an easy game and Pueblo West played well. Pueblo West is making strides, but I think our team overall played gutsy. Blake and Jack are great players and we do not have a chance to compete without great players.”

    Ponderosa improved to 4-1 overall with its third-consecutive win. The Mustangs’ only loss was 14-8 to Brighton High School out of Salt Lake City, Utah on March 13. Pueblo West dropped to 0-4 with the loss.

    “We just didn’t move the ball well,” second-year West coach Jason Pacheck said. “We are getting better, but we just have to move the ball. It comes down to passing the ball and we aren’t doing that right now.”

    The Mustangs set the tone for the game in the opening 24 minutes, taking a 10-4 halftime lead.

    “We just wanted to go out there and get better,” said Bruner, a senior, attacker. “We were moving the ball in the first half and working the fundamentals.”

    Griffin, a junior midfielder, echoed his teammate.

    “We were winning ground balls and face-offs, the easy things,” the 5-foot-8, 150-pound Griffin said.

    During the second half, the Cyclones tried to change the pace of the game, but could never cut into the Mustangs’ advantage.

    “They definitely became more physical because we had a lead on them,” said Bruner, who has signed to play lacrosse at Westminster College, an NCAA Division II school in Salt Lake City. “The game became a little bit more chippy, but we were able to handle it.”

    Although the season is still very young, Tierney, who is in his third season at the helm of Ponderosa, has bold expectations for his squad.

    “Winning state has to be our goal, absolutely,” said Tierney, whose team lost in the state quarterfinals to Air Academy last season. “I think we have a good team. We have talent. We going to face some issues like injuries and we are going to need some luck, and we are going to need to improve. We try and take something out, hopefully out of every game, and make ourselves better.”

    Bruner, a 6-foot-1, 170-pounder, knows the challenge his team faces to win state, but he’s embracing the challenge.

    “The state championship is our goal,” Bruner said. “I think we are very capable of reaching that goal. We are all good buddies on this team. We all get along and we all push each other to get better. It is a good group of players that we have. Whatever team we face, we just want to go out there and get the win.”

    They accomplished that mission Thursday and will look to do it again Friday as they face Grandview.

    Things are tight atop the Class 5A boys lacrosse ranking this week.

    Arapahoe held on to the top spot in the CHSAANow.com poll, though only leads No. 2 Regis Jesuit by one overall point. The Warriors got six first-place votes; Regis got five.

    Cherry Creek stayed at No. 3 this week, while Colorado Academy and Kent Denver flipped spots in the top five.

    Rock Canyon was the lone newcomer in 5A, joining at No. 9.

    Wheat Ridge extended its run in 4A’s No. 1 spot. The Famers got all six first-place votes in that poll.

    Valor Christian made a big jump in going from No. 5 to No. 2 following a close win over former No. 2 Aspen. Aspen dropped to No. 3 this week.

    Thompson Valley also had a big leap, moving from eighth to fourth after beating then-No. 3 Cheyenne Mountain. Cheyenne Mountain is now fifth.

    Conifer joined the 4A poll at No. 8.

    The next new ranking will be out on April 7, due to the large number of out-of-state games this week, and thus, a lack of in-state competition.

  • No. 1 Wheat Ridge shuts out No. 6 Air Academy in 4A boys lacrosse title rematch

    WHEAT RIDGE — Even a shorthanded Wheat Ridge boys’ lacrosse team is pretty darn good.

    The defending Class 4A state champion Farmers played without leading goal scorers junior Dima Makarov and senior John Roach late Friday afternoon against Air Academy. Wheat Ridge’s starting goalie Jensen Makarov also missed the game because he was in California looking at colleges.

    The absence of key players didn’t show on the scoreboard as 4A’s top-ranked Farmers blanked the No. 6-ranked Kadets 11-0.

    “I’m really pleased with the way it went down,” Wheat Ridge coach Chris Knott said. “We had a bunch of young guys step up and fill those shoes. That is all we could really ask for. Our back-up goalie went in and pitched a shutout. What more can you ask?”

    A few nagging injuries caused Knott to sit a few players. Knott said he should have everyone back when Wheat Ridge begins its three-game stretch of games during its spring break trip to California next week.

    Seven different Farmers found the back of the net against Air Academy. Senior Tyler Knott, son of Wheat Ridge’s head coach, led the way with three goals. The senior captain’s first goal came on the Farmers’ first offensive possession.

    “Right off the bat it was definitely good,” Tyler Knott said of the Farmers taking command early. “We got a good lead. It got our team pumped and set the mood for the rest of the game.”

    Wheat Ridge scored on its first three offensive possessions. Junior Regan Devine scored on an assist from sophomore Dan O’Connor for the Farmers’ second goal. Junior Bennie Pachello gave the Farmers a 3-0 lead after winning a faceoff and racing down the field before putting a hard shot past Air Academy senior goalie Mikey Smith.

    “I think it’s a really good thing,” said Tyler Knott of getting some experience for its younger players. “It lets us expand our team and expands our depth. It gives the younger kids a chance to step up and see what they are made of.”

    Devine and freshman Zach Hall each finished with a pair of goals in the bounce-back victory for Wheat Ridge. Class 5A powerhouse Cherry Creek, No. 3 in this week’s CHSAANow.com poll, defeated the Farmers 11-4 earlier in the week.

    “We really practiced hard for this week coming in,” Wheat Ridge senior defender Caleb Cerf said. “We brought it out hard and did well.”

    Led by Cerf, the Farmers’ defense was able to shut down Air Academy’s leading goal scoring tandem of senior Mitchell Miller (19 goals) and sophomore Jake Thornally (12 goals). Senior Chris Tuuk picked up the victory in goal for the Farmers.

    Friday was a rematch of last year’s 4A state championship game. Wheat Ridge won its first lacrosse state title, along with the first boys or girls lacrosse championship for Jeffco, with a dominating 14-2 win against Air Academy.

    The Farmers cruised through the 4A tournament last season outscoring their four opponents 61-10.

    Wheat Ridge will head to California for during next week’s spring break. The Farmers play a trio of California teams before kicking off its 4A Foothills League play April 2 against rival Evergreen.

    “It’s the best thing for us, to go out and challenge our team,” coach Knott said of facing out-of-state teams and playing top 5A programs in Colorado. “The worse thing that can happen is they get better. When you player higher competition it’s going to make your guys play better. That is what has happened for us in the past and that is what we are going to count on going to California and everything else.”

    Air Academy will also head to California for spring break next week. The Kadets will play Cathedral Catholic and Carlsbad.

  • 5A boys lacrosse poll adds three new teams

    Three new teams dot this week’s CHSAANow.com boys lacrosse rankings in 5A.

    Joining are No. 7 Monarch, No. 9 Fort Collins and No. 10 Highlands Ranch.

    Arapahoe stayed on top of the 5A ranking, while Regis Jesuit bumped up one place to No. 2. Cherry Creek is third, Kent Denver is fourth and Colorado Academy rounds out the top five.

    There were no newcomers to the 4A ranking, though Aspen did make a large jump in going from No. 7 to No. 2 following a 4-0 start. That includes wins over preseason No. 10 Alexander Dawson and preseason No. 2 Air Academy.

  • Arapahoe, Wheat Ridge lead preseason boys lacrosse rankings

    Arapahoe and Wheat Ridge, last season’s champions, head the respective preseason boys lacrosse rankings.

    The Warriors, No. 1 in 5A, received 10 of the 15 first-place votes in the CHSAANow.com poll, but edged No. 2 Cherry Creek by just one overall point. Arapahoe, a two-time defending champion, does have to replace its four leading scorers who graduated after last season, as well as break in a new goalie.

    Cherry Creek, meanwhile, returns its top three scorers from last year’s runner-up squad, including sophomore Henry Adams (19 goals, 16 assists a year ago). Starting goalie Addison Christensen is also back.

    The Bruins are followed by No. 3 Regis Jesuit, No. 4 Kent Denver and No. 5 Mullen.

    Wheat Ridge won last season’s inaugural 4A title last year, and now leads the preseason poll this year. Top scorer John Roach is back, as is star goalie Jensen Makarov.

    Air Academy, runner-up to Wheat Ridge last season, is No. 2. Cheyenne Mountain is third, and is followed by Thompson Valley and Valor Christian.

  • Previewing the boys lacrosse season

    Our boys lacrosse preview is a compilation of information from coaches, administrators and MaxPreps statistics.

    Across the state of Colorado, 67 schools with approximately 3,000 student-athletes compete in two classifications of boys lacrosse.

    Class 5A is made up of 36 schools with an enrollment of more than 1,410 students. There are 31 4A schools with enrollments below 1,410.

    Below is comprehensive preview of each team.

    2014 outlook: Chatfield is looking forward to a strong 2014 season. The team has a lot of potential as its returns 18 varsity players. “Looking forward to see how our team fares against some very strong programs we have on our schedule,” O’Brien said.

    Columbine Rebels

    2013 highlight: Columbine was able to produce eight all-state players, including two All-Americans. Winning back-to-back league and Littleton Cup championships was the highlight of 2013 for Columbine.

    2014 outlook: Youth is the word for 2014. Many talented, yet unproven players dot the roster. The schedule remains challenging with key out of state games against Mercer Island (Wash.), Bainbridge Island (Wash.) and Lincoln (Ore.). If youth can gain experience, the Rebels look for a three-peat in the Jeffco League.

    Dakota Ridge Eagles

But, we have some kids getting recruited and have a lot of experience.”

    2014 outlook: “We have a seasoned group of seniors who are ready to take care of business this coming season,” Flood said. “Our guys have put in more work this offseason than ever before. With most of the team coming back, we expect to have a strong presence in our league and in the state.”

    2013 highlight: “We started off with a four-day spring break trip, where we played three games and had three practices. We went 1-2 and the team was worn out and not satisfied,” Shigekane said. “This helped us prepare for the rest of the season. With all the weather, we had to finish the season with playing six games in nine days, against very tough competition. The players rose to the occasion and played their best lacrosse, winning all six games and received a No. 4 (seed) in the playoffs.”

    2014 outlook: “We graduated about 15 seniors and lettermen,” Shigekane said. “We are a young team. I am excited for the players to learn about leadership, community and hard work. With these behaviors in place this team will experience a great season and life-long friendships.”

    2013 highlight: The 2013 season was Lakewood’s very first season of competition. The team worked hard to gel all season, and began to make great strides by the end of the competition to enter 2014 on a number of high notes. The team found an identity on offense, and will look to pick up momentum in other areas of the team from that success.

    2014 outlook: The Lakewood Tigers return a solid core of players at every position for the 2014 season. The team’s top three scorers — Adam Zimmerman, Will Swartz, and Braden Birney — are all primed for important responsibilities in leadership on the offensive side of the ball, while defensive leadership will come from John Stauffer and Sam Copper. Looking to improve on its record from the 2013 season, the Tigers have set their sights on earning their first-ever playoff berth in 2014.

    It’s hard to tell what this season may hold for the Thunderhawks. “This is my first season coaching at PVHS, and what I see is a group of young men working hard in the offseason, playing box lacrosse, and practicing on their own time,” Pucul said. “Because there is not an established feeder system in the area, most players started in the ninth grade, but what they lack in experience, they are willing to make up for in hard work. This year we will focus on building a team, constructing a community, and starting traditions within the Thunderhawk program.”

    2013 highlight: The Angels did well enough to earn the final seed in the state 5A playoffs. They faced the No. 1 seed, Cherry Creek, in the first round. The team lost but not without giving the top ranked team a tight 9-4 battle. East had strong wins against Heritage and Grandview that certainly helped push a bid for the playoffs.

    2014 outlook: With 14 returning lettermen and a core senior class, 2014 looks bright for the Angels. The team will look to make a deeper push into the state playoffs backed with an experienced back line. Jack Sawyer, a returning first-team all-stater, will anchor the defense alongside returning starters, Connor Lewis and senior goaltender Joey Cowperthwaite. The team will also look to seniors for offensive production in left-handed attackman, Griffin Heller and linemate Jack Matthews. Ball possession will be a huge factor, as the Angels will have high expectations for junior Sam Bierman to hold down the face-off and to contribute on offense.

    Gateway Olympians

    2014 outlook: “Every year you lose some key players to graduation,” Brenneman said, “but we are fortunate to return a lot of 2013’s starting players who are current seniors and juniors. We are excited to see which guys among them will step up as leaders, and which of the young athletes will break into the mix. The 2014 Colorado high school lacrosse landscape is sure to be one of the deepest and most competitive in recent years.”

    2013 highlight: “Last season was a tough one for our program, finishing 4-11 after qualifying for the state tournament the past three years,” Todd said. “Although there were not a lot of highlights in the win/loss column, we saw high potential in the growth and improvement of our JV team and underclassmen on the varsity team. We had a lot of new faces that were not experienced enough to take on the roles we asked them to. We saw a lot of improvement the second half of the season and we are looking take that momentum into 2014.”

    2014 outlook: This season, Littleton looks to turn it around with a good crop of returning varsity players and get back into the state tournament. With seven returning starters and the entire coaching staff back, we are looking to make big improvements on the field this season. Littleton is led by a strong senior class and an experienced attack unit made up of seniors Riley Harden and Charlie Hindman, junior Joe Timm and sophomore Donovan Crabtree. The midfield is led by Andrew Krom and Josh Barrow and will look to Mac Baker, Nathan Gothard and Evan Witt to take on bigger roles this season.
    Junior Ben Schreiber leads a senior-heavy defensive unit along with Sean Malloy, Andy Wheeler, Michael Norwood and Thatcher Bouck. They’ll play in front of senior keeper Aaron Mountfort who split time in goal last year. “Experience is the biggest gain we made last year, and this group is ready to compete in the tough South Suburban conference,” Todd said.

Was by far our best comeback of the season and the best four minutes of lacrosse we played all season.”

    2014 outlook: “We lost some very talented seniors to graduation, but this year we have a very strong senior class that I expect to lead us to another successful season,” Bocklet said. “The team has worked harder in the offseason and we hope that translates to a couple more wins this spring.”

    2013 highlight: The 2013 season for Mountain Vista included many tough fought games to Douglas County opponents. The Golden Eagles also fought tooth and nail against some of the state’s finest. The team came together for big wins against Chaparral and Castle View. Going into the state tournament, Mountain Vista ran into the eventual state champion, Arapahoe, and played a tough game.

    2014 outlook: The 2014 season for Mountain is looking very bright. The team is setting lofty goals this year due to a shared belief that this team is built from the bottom up to succeed. “Vista lacrosse has reinvented ourselves in our offseason training that is laying the ground work for the spring season,” Herman said. “Vista is no longer under the radar and is working towards achieving success. Our fast-paced offense and pressure defense looks to compete with everyone at the highest level. Vista has a very tough schedule this year which will help us to become battle tested.”

    2013 highlight: Aspen skiers had a successful 2013 season advancing to the playoffs for the team’s first playoff appearance making it to the quarterfinals. It was a young team with over half the roster being sophomores. The team was lead by a small group of dedicated and athletic seniors that had a strong presence for the midfield and defense.

    2014 outlook: Preparing for the season and with many returning players, the team is focused on getting right back to the team chemistry that was built during the 2013 season. Offensively, all three attack from 2013 are returning as juniors with a strong and fast group of midfielders who are eager to push the transition with the changes to the substitution rules. Defensively, two junior goalies — Art Kelso and Jordan Cottrell — will continue battling and pushing each other for time in the net while the defense works to fill open positions from graduated seniors. The team has a tougher schedule with more non-conference game in the anticipation of being a strong team than 2013 when the playoffs begin.

    2013 highlight: 2013 marked the first time Eagle Valley made the playoffs in its five year history. “We also saw the school goals record fall; broken by three players Sam Boyd (30), Nick Briggs (30), and Johnny Bailey (25),” Boddy said. “The points record fell to Johnny Bailey with 60 points.” The team grew quite a bit over the course of the year and gave a great effort against eventual 4A champion Wheat Ridge.

    2014 outlook: Coming into 2014, the Devils will be focused on their first .500 record and improving their seeding in the 4A playoffs. Anchored by the school record holder in points (J. Bailey) and goals (N. Briggs) their attack looks to lead the way along with Noah Ejnes and sophomore Jared Salaz. The defense will be anchored by Joe Sheldon in net, taking over after two years as the varsity backup, and junior defenseman Riley Nestlerode. This season looks to be a strong one for a growing program with over 50 players in it.

    Fruita Monument Wildcats

    2013 highlight: The 2013 season was the most successful in the short history of TV boys lacrosse. It was the first year that the team had a winning record, made the playoffs and won a playoff game. Many of the seniors that were a part of the team had participated in turning the team from a new, inexperienced program, into a contending 4A organization.

    2014 outlook: The 2014 season will be a test of the program’s durability and growth over the last several seasons. This is the first season that there will be more upperclassmen on the varsity roster than underclassmen. The season that many of the players worked very hard to acquire is finally here. The team, coaches and players, are excited for the opportunities that last year’s success has brought into the current season, and look forward to building on the solid foundation that they have built.

  • CHSAA begins 93rd year of spring sports

    AURORA — The 93rd year of Colorado High School Activities Association practice for spring sports begins just as the basketball playoffs are gearing up and ice hockey moves into Frozen Four action. Official practice starts Monday, February 24 for baseball, girls’ golf, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, girls’ soccer, boys’ swimming and diving, girls’ tennis and boys’ and girls’ track and field.

    Teams may begin interscholastic scrimmages on March 1 (February 27 for golf and tennis), while the first contests may begin on Thursday, March 6. Tennis and golf may begin contests on Thursday, February 27.

    In May, 1921, a group of superintendents and principals met in Boulder and organized the Colorado High School Athletic Conference. The purpose of this organization was to better regulate and develop the interscholastic school athletic program.

    There were nine leagues by the time the first constitution was published, including the Northern, North Central, Western Slope, Suburban, Southeastern, Arkansas Valley, South Central and San Juan Basin leagues.

    The first champions crowned that school year were Colorado Springs in football, Greeley in basketball, and Fort Collins in track and field.

    In 1924, the Colorado High School Athletic Conference joined the National Federation of State High School Associations and has remained an active member of that organization ever since.

    Loveland’s R.W. Truscott was the Association’s first president and Eaton’s J.C. Casey its first secretary (commissioner). Truscott replaced Casey as secretary in December, 1926 and held that post until July, 1948 when Glenn T. Wilson became commissioner. Ray C. Ball took over the commissioner’s post in 1966 and remained in the office until August, 1986 when Ray Plutko assumed the duties. Bob Ottewill became the Association’s sixth commissioner in July, 1990, followed by Bill Reader who served as Commissioner from 2002 until 2010. Angelico assumed the reins on July 1, 2010.

    The CHSAA has had 58 presidents dating back to 1921. Its current president, Centauri High School Principal Curt Wilson, is in the first year of a two-year term as president.

  • Heritage sophomore Komatz headed to Notre Dame for lacrosse

    By all accounts, Keaton Komatz did his due diligence before committing to Notre Dame to play lacrosse.

    The Heritage sophomore, who started playing the game in third grade, visited at least 12 college campuses this summer, hoping to shape his recruitment and get an idea where he’d like to land. He was traveling, anyway — Komatz would head East to lacrosse tournaments nearly every week during the summer and into the fall — so he and his parents used it as an opportunity to visit campuses.

    “It was a bunch of lacrosse over the summer and the fall, but, obviously, it all paid off,” Komatz said on Friday.

    “We saw a lot of colleges,” said Komatz’s mother, Nancy.

    And a lot of colleges saw him. Komatz. an attackman, became a highly sought-after recruit because of his performances at those tournaments while playing for 3d Select, his club team.

    “He’s kind of the best kid you’ve never heard of in Colorado,” said Jon Cohen, who is about to begin his first season as Heritage’s lacrosse coach. “I mean, Georgetown, Maryland, Notre Dame, Harvard, Princeton, Brown all extended offers to him.”

    The onslaught of attention was “overwhelming at times,” Komatz said. Especially because he’s only a sophomore.

    “I still kind of have that shocked feeling in me that I’m already (planning for college),” Komatz said. “Having that first (recruiting) call with Maryland and Georgetown was the scariest thing of my life.”

    But all the travel and preparation helped him figure out what he liked in a school. In late November, Komatz visited Notre Dame’s campus. He committed the day after he returned.

    “All the other schools were kind of all the same to me. They all had the same feel towards their daily living, lacrosse, their academics,” Komatz said. “When I went to visit Notre Dame, it felt completely different from all the other schools. It was the same in terms of great academics and lacrosse, but I guess being a good football school and a college down — South Bend definitely has a good college-town feel — it has a bunch of spirit.”

    Komatz will follow former Wheat Ridge standout Nick Ossello with the Fighting Irish. Now a junior at Notre Dame, Ossello was an all-state lacrosse and football player for the Farmers.

    Komatz also joins a prestigious list of recent Colorado lacrosse recruits heading to big-time programs, which includes Ossello, Rock Canyon’s Wilkins Dismuke (Johns Hopkins), and the recent slew of locals staying home at the University of Denver.

    “When I moved out here, there were one or two (big-program) guys. Ossello was kind of one of the first big guys, and then Wilkins,” said Cohen, who is also an assistant coach with the MLL’s Denver Outlaws. “Now, a Division I recruit is not — it used to be a huge deal, where everybody kind of talked about it. Now, I think it’s more of a credit to the youth coaches and the youth club programs that are giving these guys coaching.

    “On any summer day at a tournament here, you’ll see 40 college coaches lined up. The rest of the nation is noticing how well Colorado is doing and how well the kids are playing.”

    Komatz was Heritage’s top producer last season, notching 37 points on 24 goals and 13 assists. The Eagles are coming off a 7-8 season, but, Cohen said, having a player of Komatz’s talent and stature “bodes well for the program.”

    “I think more people are starting to notice him and are game-planning for him, so he might get doubled,” Cohen said. “One thing about Keaton is he’s one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached, so if he is getting double-teamed, more guys will step up and score points and he’ll find a way for the team to win regardless of how many points he scores. To be honest, I don’t think he really cares about how many points he scores.”

    Added Komatz: “I’m really excited for the whole new coaching staff with Jon being there. I’m definitely excited for what he’s going to bring to the table; he’s really experienced. I feel like we’ll step it up from last year. We have, I think, 19 seniors, so that will be strong right there. We’re hoping for the best.”
