  • Cheyenne Mountain girls soccer ends regular season unbeaten

COLORADO SPRINGS — On a night that would see the No. 1-ranked Cheyenne Mountain girls soccer team honor the seniors leading the Indians into the state playoffs as one of the favorites to walk away as state champions, it was only fitting that it was a pair of seniors who would seal the win in their regular season finale.

Tori Burnett and Sara Walters each put the ball in the net within the first 15 minutes of the game, pacing the Indians (12-0-2, 6-0-1) to a 3-0 win over the Wheat Ridge Farmers (11-3, 7-0) Thursday night. The win capped off an undefeated season for the Indians who were a mainstay at the top spot of the CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings.

The Indians were on the attack early, getting some good looks at the Wheat Ridge net. They were able to convert on an early corner kick opportunity as Burnett was able to head the ball over the reach of Farmers goalkeeper Abby Bausch, taking an early 1-0 lead.

Only minutes later — while still on the attack — forward Sara Walters was tripped up in the goal box, giving the Indians a penalty kick. Aiming right, Walters put the ball past Bausch, giving the Indians a 2-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the contest.

“We finally picked it up to where we were starting quicker and scoring earlier in the game which is helpful,” Burnett said. “It’s really helpful when we’re up early because it lets everyone settle down and relax and get into the game a little bit more.

The Indians would carry the 2-0 lead into halftime where the team would honor its senior class, many of whom will continue to play soccer at the collegiate level. Knowing that the senior class was going to be honored gave those who would step on the field some added motivation not only to win the game, but to help honor the players who were concluding the final regular season of their career.

“I thought we had a lot more energy tonight than we did earlier in the season,” Walters said. “Scoring early definitely helped and I feel like when we go into the playoffs and play the tougher teams, it’s going to help that we won this game the way we did.”

The No. 9 Farmers struggled to establish any offensive rhythm throughout the game. There were stretches of the season where they were able to score almost at will, but the ability of the Indians to keep consistent pressure on the Farmers’ defenders limited the number of scoring opportunities.

That pressure would eventually lead to a third goal for Cheyenne Mountain as a free kick was placed right in front of the Farmers net where another senior, Amanda Burke, was able to head it into the back of the net.

“It’s great to have that much leadership with all that’s going on,” Indians coach Tomas Martinez said. “A lot of (the seniors) are captains and they do a good job of leading the team and keeping things organized. It’s a little sad that they’ll be gone but we’ve had them for four years and most of them have been on varsity so they know what to expect from us and they know what they’re doing.”

With the regular season in the books, the Indians now look at continuing their run of success in the 4A state playoffs. The Indians had a similar run of success going into the 2013 playoffs but stumbled earlier than they had anticipated, giving them some added motivation as they turn their eyes to the postseason.

“We have a lot of confidence and I know we’ll do good things,” Martinez said. “But anything can happen and we found that out the hard way last year.”

The Farmers also have their sights set on postseason play. They finished undefeated in Jeffco league play this season and the match-up against the Indians proved to be a sound test to finish the regular season and prepare for the playoffs.

“You’re playing the best,” coach Dan Watkins said of Cheyenne Mountain. “You’re playing a team that’s organized and does a lot of great things out there and forces you to play good soccer and disciplined soccer.”

Both team will wait for the seeding process to play out which will map out their road toward playing for a state championship.

Green Mountain goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon has made 221 saves in her career. She carries a 0.631 goals-against average, and has 55 wins for the Rams. But most impressive is what happened Tuesday.

    Hendon.
    Hendon.

Hendon, a senior, set the Colorado record with her 40th career shutout during a 10-0 win over Colorado Springs Christian on Tuesday.

CHSAA does not maintain soccer records, but the National Soccer Coaches Association of America has extensive data. According to that record book, Hendon broke the mark of 39 career shutouts set by Overland’s Lisa Griffin after the 1988-89 season.

Ten of Hendon’s 40 shutouts have come this season. She notched 11 as a junior, 10 as a sophomore and nine as a freshman.

Hendon, an Iowa State recruit, is now 55-6-6 in net.

Green Mountain is 12-1-1 this season in Class 4A.

Cherry Creek boys lacrosse in driver’s seat

Cherry Creek boys lacrosse had probably its biggest win of the season on Tuesday night — and what a time to have it.

The second-ranked Bruins beat No. 1 Regis Jesuit 10-7 and are now 10-0 against in-state competition.

Cherry Creek has finished runner-up each of the last two seasons. Should they beat Kent Denver in the Friday’s season finale, it seems very likely that the Bruins end up as the No. 1 seed of the Class 5A field. In that scenario, I think Regis — 12-1 against in-state teams — would still wind up as the No. 2 seed.

Other high seeds should include Mountain Vista, Kent Denver and Colorado Academy.

Boykins talks new Douglas County job

New Douglas County boys basketball coach Earl Boykins, the former Denver Nugget, is a weekly guest on 104.3 The Fan. Tuesday, he talked about his new job.

“I’ve always wanted to teach young people basketball,” he said. “That’s always been a desire of mine and something I wanted to do. That’s why I started Boykins Basketball Academy. While doing the Academy, I decided I should take it to the next level, and the next level would be high school.

“It’s been a process that I’m enjoying and I look forward to the next basketball season.”

Douglas County went 3-20 last season, and actually hasn’t had a winning season since 2007-08. That’s also the last time the Huskies made the state tournament. Over the past six seasons, the Huskies are 29-110.

“I believe in Earl, I’ve seen him coach in person,” said Alfred Williams, co-host on 104.3. “I believe the guy’s going to be a great coach. Can’t wait to see it all come together.”

Arapahoe girls soccer turns it around

Arapahoe’s girls soccer team finished the regular season 11-3-1 and won the Centennial League by virtue of a win over Cherry Creek on April 15.

It was quite a one-season turnaround for the Warriors, who went 3-11-0 a year ago and lost seven of their final eight games.

Though, these guys didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. Arapahoe was 14-3-0 in 2012, and made the 5A title game in 2010.

    Short stuff

    • In an abrupt change, Dan Snyder will not become Grandview’s new boys basketball coach. The longtime Arapahoe coach decided instead “to step away from high school coaching for awhile,” according to the Aurora Sentinel.
    • Prairie View baseball senior Caleb Dameron now has 22 steals this season with three games yet to play. That is believed to be a big-school state record.
    • Sedgwick County’s Chase Dunker threw his third no-hitter of the season on Saturday. This time, he struck out 16. Earlier this season, Dunker struck out 19 of the 21 batters he faced while tossing a perfect game.
    • County Line remained unranked in the final 2A baseball poll of the regular season, but the Rivals — it’s a co-op between Wiley and McClave — are now 13-3, including a double-header sweep of then-No. 1 Swink on Saturday.
    • Grand Junction boys basketball coach Dutch Johnson resigned to become an assistant at Colorado Mesa next season, according to this tweet.
    • Longmont volleyball coach Holli Stetson has resigned, according to BoCoPreps.com, following a difficult season during which she endured the death of her father and had a variety of health issues.
    • Spring championship season around the corner, and most of the events will be carried on the NFHS Network. The Network recently released an official app — download it here.
    • Ponderosa’s booster club tweeted out new jerseys the team will wear next season under first-year coach Jaron Cohen. Here’s away, and home.
    • Brandon Bailey, a 2013 graduate of Broomfield, was named the West Coast Conference’s baseball player of the week on Monday. He pitched a complete-game win over Saint Mary’s last Saturday, allowing just one earned run on eight hits. He also struck out a career-high seven batters. Bailey, who didn’t pitch his senior season because of an arm injury, is now 4-5 with a 3.24 ERA for the Bulldogs as a freshman.

  • Little movement in final girls soccer rankings of the season

Jefferson Academy Kent Denver girls soccer
Jefferson Academy had one of the bigger jumps of the week, moving up to No. 3 in Class 3A. (Pam Wagner)

With the playoffs just around the corner, girls soccer seems to have a pretty clear picture. For now, anyway.

Not only did none of the No. 1 teams change this week, none of the three classes added a new team in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings.

There were jumps here and there — Jefferson Academy went from No. 6 to No. 3 in 3A; Palmer Ridge from No. 10 to No. 8 in 4A — but most of the movement amounted to tinkering.

The No. 1 teams this week are Pine Creek (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A).

With the regular season ending on Friday, these will serve as the final rankings.

ARVADA — Every goal has been a treasured commodity during the race for the Class 5A Jeffco girls’ soccer league championship this spring.

That was definitely the case Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex. A goal by Ralston Valley sophomore Emma Musson in the 65th minute gave the Mustangs, No. 10 in the latest CHSAANow.com 5A girls’ soccer rankings, a 3-1 lead. Ralston Valley hung on for a 3-2 victory against Standley Lake.

“I thought we would score more, but Standley Lake came back harder,” Musson said of what turned out to be the game-winning goal. “It was rough.”

Standley Lake senior Sammie Brown scored in the 72nd minute to close the Gators to within one goal, but Standley Lake wasn’t able to get the equalizer in the final minutes to force overtime.

“It opened up in the second half,” Standley Lake coach Jeff Vigil said. “Both teams just gave it everything they had. It was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, we are on the wrong end of it but our season isn’t over.”

Ralston Valley (11-2), Standley Lake (10-3) and Columbine (10-3) entered the day with identical 5-1 league records. The victory vaulted the Mustangs atop the conference standings alone. Chatfield upset Columbine 2-1 on Friday to drop the Rebels one game behind the Mustangs with one league game remaining.

Columbine will actually face Ralston Valley in both teams’ league finale at 4 p.m. April 29, at NAAC. A victory or tie Tuesday would win the league title for the Mustangs. A Rebels win could force a three-way tie where Columbine would likely take the crown with least goals allowed in league play.

The conference game was originally scheduled for April 3, but snow postponed the game to the end of the league docket.

“No matter what we have to win.” Ralston Valley coach Kamee Morwood said. “I knew when our game against Columbine got cancelled it would come down to the league championship. It’s huge because they will be a good view of what we’ll get in the playoffs.”

Ralston Valley freshman Lindsay Guerrero opened up the scoring Friday with a goal in the 35th minute off an assist from Musson.

“I just crossed it in and hoped someone would be there to finish it,” Musson said.

Standley Lake answered early in the second half when junior Taylor McRae headed in a free kick taken by sophomore Kat Lopez to tie the game at 1-1.

Ralston Valley regained the lead in the 63rd minute with Kasee Horton deflecting in a corner kick by sophomore Alyssa Kaiser. Musson’s goal came less than a two minutes later for a 3-1 Ralston Valley lead.

It was the fourth league game Ralston Valley has been involved in that was decided by one goal.

“To go into this week of the season there are three teams tied for first and three other teams fighting to get in,” Morwood said. “It speaks for the talent in Jeffco and the coaches who really care about there kids and really want their kids in (the playoffs). It’s been awesome.”

The first round of the 5A state playoffs begin May 6.

Jeffco receives three automatic bids to the 32-team tournament. It’s almost a lock Ralston Valley, Columbine and Standley Lake will finish in the top three to gain berths to state. Dakota Ridge and Arvada West could fight their way into an automatic bid, but more likely will have to earn one of the 11 at-large bids.

Standley Lake concludes its regular season with a non-league game against Niwot on Monday, April 28, at NAAC. The Gators last league contest is 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, against Bear Creek at Lakewood Memorial Field.

“I think we have a playoff run in us,” Vigil said. “I’m excited about it.”

  • Broomfield girls soccer continues to control Northern Conference

    (Brock Laue)
    (Brock Laue)

NIWOT — Broomfield girls soccer had claimed five Northern Conference crowns in a row entering Thursday’s road game.

In a battle of undefeated league teams, Niwot made the Eagles work for title No. 6, but Broomfield ultimately kept its stranglehold on the Northern with a 3-1 victory.

The win gave the Eagles a 6-0 conference record with a game against Longmont remaining. They hold the tiebreaker over Niwot (6-1), which completed its league campaign.

No. 8 Niwot pounced on No. 2 Broomfield with a Caroline Miller goal off a deflected shot by Maria Fayeulle. The goal came less than a minute into the Class 4A game.

“It definitely woke me up a little bit,” said Broomfield senior forward Brittney Stark, a University of Colorado recruit, about the deficit. “It’s always scary to go down a goal any time in the game, but especially that early in the game, in a game that we were hoping to come out strong for.

“I think we ended up on our heels a little more than we were expecting, so it was a good wakeup call and I’m proud of my team for pulling through it, because it’s a hard thing to do.”

Broomfield controlled possession for the most part after the early goal as Stark, Katie Forsee and the Eagles’ other experienced midfielders and forwards applied pressure on Niwot’s defense with their speed and ball skills.

Broomfield earned an equalizer with 11 minutes left in the first half as Stark found Forsee on a cross, who put it in the back of the net.

“To find ourselves down, with our experience, I never felt panicked, the girls never felt panicked,” Broomfield coach Jim Davidson said. “We had already created a couple of opportunities. Ultimately, we played ourselves back in, but I was glad, obviously, we equalized before halftime. It might have been a little bit harder in the second half trying to chase the game a bit.”

The physicality of the match picked up in the second half as both teams eyed the conference crown. Broomfield took advantage of a Cougar foul in the box that set up a Kerri Marquardt penalty kick attempt. She converted to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead with 29 minutes remaining.

Kristin Snyder all but sealed the victory with a ridiculous angle shot on the far right side. The goal gave Broomfield a 3-1 lead with 13:20 on the clock. The Eagles could taste another conference championship.

Davidson was pleased with the victory over a tough squad that entered the match 11-1.

“Niwot is a much improved team from last year, so I think that they deserve a lot of credit,” Davidson said. “It’s always fun to come here and these games are always a grind. I think our girls handled themselves well ultimately. It wasn’t real pretty. It wasn’t the kind of soccer that we really wanted to play today, but it was effective.”

Stark, a varsity player all four years at Broomfield, hopes the team builds off the win on their way to the playoffs in two weeks.

“I think it was a good team win,” Stark said. “As a team, I think we played really well and we played together well. That’s what’s important nearing the postseason, is being able to connect on the team, and not on an individual level, but on a team level.”

“We need to become a little more consistent near the goal and connecting with our midfielders and our forwards,” Stark added. “When we connect midfielders and forwards together, we’re unstoppable, and I think we have a lot of potential going forward if we do that. It’s starting to fall into place. As long as we keep that going, we’re going to be fine.”

The Eagles, who returned nine starters off last year’s state runner-up team, had a wealth of experience headed into the season in the frontline and with Paige Lindbloom, a returning starter at goalie, but were youthful defensively.

Stark said it’s been a process incorporating new talent into the defense.

“It definitely took a couple of games,” Stark said. “Our first couple of games were a little rougher, but we got blessed with a very, very, very good and experienced freshman class. Everybody that is coming in is definitely making a difference on the team, which is impressive as freshman, because that’s hard to do on a team that’s as experienced and old as us with eight or nine seniors in our class.”

Zoe Zinis, a sophomore transfer from Mullen, sat out half the season due to CHSAA rules. The talented defensive newcomer displayed her skills on Thursday.

Niwot’s Maria Fayeulle, a Northwestern recruit and the leading scorer in the Northern Conference with 45 points, including a league-leading 17 goals, gave Broomfield trouble right away.

“We struggled a little bit early,” Davidson said of defending Fayeulle. “I thought they found her in good space and she did a good job going deep for the ball, but then we brought Zoe Zinis on and we tried to match speed for speed and that worked out really well for us.”

Broomfield’s combination of talent, leadership, and experience earned them a checkmark next to one of their goals, a conference championship. This season, they have had their sights set on a bigger prize, though, after losing 2-0 to Cheyenne Mountain in last year’s 4A State Championship match.

“Its last year’s state championship game that’s haunting us,” Stark said. “Obviously, that is my biggest goal this year. I want nothing more than a state championship, especially my senior year. I look forward to that and every game I think about that game, but we also are trying to remind ourselves to keep it in perspective. It’s a long road to get there. We still have a long road to go.”

Pine Creek toppled No. 1 Mountain Vista last week. This week, the Eagles now occupy that No. 1 spot.

Pine Creek beat Mountain Vista 4-3 on the road last Friday. Monday, the Eagles got eight of the 11 first-place votes and amassed 111 overall points to become the new No. 1 team.

Mountain Vista didn’t drop far. The Golden Eagles are No. 2 this week, while Rock Canyon is No. 3. Fairview is No 4 and Fossil Ridge rounds out the top five.

Unbeaten Smoky Hill (No. 6) and Ralston Valley (No. 10) are newcomers to the 5A ranking this week.

In 4A, Cheyenne Mountain continued to lead the ranking. That poll added Palmer Ridge at No. 10.

3A, however, also got a new No. 1 team. Colorado Academy took over for Kent Denver, which went 1-1-1 last week. Kent dropped to No. 2.

The lone newcomer to the ranking was No. 10 St. Mary’s Academy, which beat Kent last week.

  • Freshman lifts No. 8 Wheat Ridge over No. 7 Evergreen in 4A girls soccer

LAKEWOOD — A pair of free kicks Friday by Wheat Ridge freshman Alexandra Nillen put the Farmers’ girls soccer program firmly in the driver’s seat of the Class 4A Jeffco League.

Wheat Ridge, ranked No. 8 in the latest CHSAANow.com 4A poll, took a 2-1 victory against No. 7 Evergreen at Lakewood Memorial Field in the showdown that likely determined the conference champion.

Nillen scored on a direct free kick in the 45th minute in the second half to break a scoreless tie. Another set piece started by Nillen with a free kick found the foot of junior Carlee Flanagan in the 54th minute for the eventual game-winning goal.

“I was planning on going far post and Carlee just happened to be there. It was a great finish by her,” said Nillen, who leads the Farmers with 10 goals and also has four assists.

Flanagan’s game-winner was her fourth goal of the season. The junior praised Nillen and her free kick that answered Evergreen’s goal in the 49th minute from sophomore Zoe Peterson on a direct free kick that tied the game at 1-1.

“That ball from Alex (Nillen) was beyond perfect,” Flanagan said. “Everyone was moving. Everyone was ready to go. I just happened to be right there on the back post for her beautiful ball. It was just perfect.”

Perfect is how Wheat Ridge (9-2, 5-0 in league) can finish out conference play next week. The Farmers face Arvada and Alameda next week where they can complete an unblemished league record.

Wheat Ridge and Evergreen (6-3-2, 3-1-1) both hadn’t given up a goal in league play. The Farmers edged D’Evelyn 1-0 earlier in the week. The Cougars battled Green Mountain for 100 minutes before ending an in 0-0 tie on Wednesday.

A scoreless first half Friday in the conference showdown wasn’t much of a surprise. Both teams combining for three goals in the span of nine minutes in the second half was a little of out character for the defensively strong teams.

“Something needed to happen to get the game going a little bit. That first goal, Alex’s brilliant free kick lifted everybody up,” Wheat Ridge coach Dan Watkins said. “The intensity of the game got more into a league championship type game.”

Watkins has had no problem putting the weight on Nillen’s shoulders of taking those key free kicks on scoring chances. The Farmers are on a six-game winning streak where they have outscored their opponents 15-1.

“Stepping in as a freshman. Technically she is very, very solid,” Watkins said of Nillen. “We’ve asked her to kind of come in and hit those balls. She is very confident and that is a great characteristic as a freshman.”

Wheat Ridge’s last loss was to Mullen before spring break.

“We’ve just come together as a team a lot more,” Flanagan said of the change over the past month. “We have learned to move the ball a lot better and finish.”

Wheat Ridge’s next game on the pitch is a non-league test on the road against Silver Creek at 4 p.m. April 21.

“We’ve got a great balance going forward toward playoffs,” Watkins said. “We want to make sure we finish off the league season right.”

Evergreen will face rival Conifer on the Lobos’ home field April 22, before concluding its league schedule against Golden at 4 p.m. April 24, at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

The Cougars have a 0-2-1 record in their past three games, but Evergreen coach Peter Jeans said the focus is to just improve in some areas before heading into the postseason.

“These are all good teams. We kind of beat each other up,” Jeans said of the 4A Jeffco League. “We have to defend set pieces better. We did have other chances to score. We didn’t make the most of our opportunities.”

With the top three 4A Jeffco teams earning automatic berths into the 32-team state tournament, it looks like Wheat Ridge, Evergreen and Green Mountain should lock up postseason tickets.
