  • New No. 1 Fossil Ridge tops Fort Collins in boys basketball

    (Brock Laue)

FORT COLLINS — In an era when fans, and even players, are often obsessed with highlight-reel plays, jaw-dropping dunks and amazing crossovers, the boys basketball team at Fossil Ridge is old fashioned.

The Sabercats never play one-on-one basketball, they never force wild shots in the hope that they can entertain a crowd or get noticed by recruiters. Instead they play old-school team basketball. Fossil Ridge is a well-oiled machine, a cohesive unit that is patient in their offense and confident in their defense.

These traits were on display Tuesday night in a game that saw the Sabercats overcome poor shooting and a tough Fort Collins zone to handle the rival Lambkins 47-31.

“We don’t have the athletes, we don’t have the players to fall back on and just carry us,” Fossil Ridge coach Matt Johannsen said after the game. “We’ve got to do a good job of playing together, we’ve got to do a good job of sharing the basketball, and I think you saw it tonight. We’ve got to do a good job of defending as a team.”

Fossil Ridge, ranked No. 1 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A poll — the first week in the past two seasons that Denver East is not No. 1 — starts five seniors and is an experienced squad that has played together in Johannsen’s system for years.

“That experience really shows on the court, there’s just so many guys that know what we are doing, they know what we need to do to execute,” Johannsen said.

Fossil Ridge has a point guard in Evan Smith who is a floor general with a high basketball IQ. He is strong with the ball and is a good scorer with shooting range. This is Smith’s third season starting for Johannsen.

“Evan is the man,” Johannsen said. “He gets us where we need to be, he coordinates us. He’s been doing that for three years. He’s really level-headed and everybody knows they tune in to him. The experience that he has on the floor is invaluable.”

Smith (11.5 points per game), Brandon Bodnar (12.2), and Alex Semadeni (12.1) are the leading scorers for the Sabercats. Semadeni and Smith clearly have great chemistry on the court as Smith always seems to find Semadeni for open jumpers.

Semadeni, who is very effective at working off the ball, is an athletic 6-foot-4 small forward, a good catch and pop shooter. He is also one of several Sabercats with height and length. This length helps shut down passing lanes for opposing offenses and disrupts their rhythm.

Fossil Ridge may be old fashioned in their emphasis on team over individual highlights, but they are new school in the defenses they run.

“I was looking at it today and we were joking about it as a staff, I think we have 12 or 13 different defensive calls, half are zone and half are man. Each one gives us a little bit different look,” Johannsen said. “We will be in zone maybe five possessions, but it might be three different zones that we are in during those five possessions.

“We are trying to not make them comfortable on the offensive end, which is what a defense is supposed to do, and we’ve got the group to be able to switch between defenses like that because they’re so smart.”

Fossil Ridge has taken advantage of their many defenses, excellent ball movement, senior leadership, and shot makers to start 11-0 with wins over Highlands Ranch, Grandview, and Eaglecrest. This group can lay claim to probably their best team in school history.

The Sabercats, coming off a Sweet 16 appearance last season, have never reached the Final Four but did make the Elite Eight during the 2010-11 season. They have traditionally been one of the top teams in the Front Range Conference since the school opened in 2004 and have compiled lofty records under Johannsen. That success has not always translated to the playoffs, but Johannsen is unconcerned about tournament time yet.

“The thing we have to do is continue to maintain our focus on what were about and that’s showing up every day and getting better,” the coach said. “These guys came up with that, I didn’t come up with that, they are buying into that mantra about every day let’s just get a little better.

“From there we want to let the chips fall where they may. We have not projected out any long term goals that we want to make it to this round of state, we want this in conference, we don’t talk about that. The only thing we can control is our effort on a daily basis in practice.”

Fossil Ridge may not have any long term goals for the state tournament, but if they keep playing as an old-fashioned “team” with a new-school style, they may find themselves playing on the last weekend of the season.

Fossil Ridge, unbeaten and with a number of impressive wins under its belt thus far, is the new No. 1 team in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys basketball poll.

The SaberCats, off to a 10-0 start, edged Denver East — which had held the No. 1 spot since the preseason — despite having one fewer first-place vote. The Angels are No. 2 this week.

Regis Jesuit moved up one spot to No. 3, while Cherry Creek made the week’s biggest gain by going from No. 10 to No. 4. Overland rounds out the top 5.

Eaglecrest is sixth and is followed by Arapahoe, Mountain Vista, Monarch and Grandview.

The 4A ranking continued to be led by Valor Christian and added two new teams: No. 7 Pueblo South and No. 10 Denver South.

3A added Aspen (No. 8), while 2A got a new No. 1 team in unbeaten Ignacio. The 1A ranking added Primero (No. 10).

  • D’Evelyn gets revenge on Golden in top-10 boys hoops showdown

DENVER — D’Evelyn’s one-two punch of junior Grant Witherspoon and senior Ty McGee was enough to win Round 2 with rival Golden on Friday night in boys hoops action.

Witherspoon and McGee combined for 37 points in a 68-50 victory in a Class 4A Jeffco League showdown of two teams ranked in the top-10 of the 4A boys basketball CHSAANow.com poll on D’Evelyn’s home court.

“When we got off Christmas Break we didn’t look ahead from anyone we had to play, but we’ve been talking about Golden for three weeks straight,” Witherspoon said. “We worked our butts off for this moment.”

Golden scored a 77-67 victory from D’Evelyn in the championship game of the 2013 D’Evelyn/Golden Preview Classic back on Dec. 7.

    D'Evelyn Golden boys basketball

Early on Friday night it looked like it could be a repeat with Golden jumping out to an early lead just like it did a month ago.

“For some reason Golden always comes out so focused and we not really there. I’m not sure what it is,” D’Evelyn coach Troy Pachner said. “I think today it wasn’t lack of effort. We just were a little overhyped. It was a great crowd for the first time this year and guys were a little tight.”

After trailing 8-4 after the first quarter, D’Evelyn picked it up offensively with Witherspoon leading the charge. The junior scored 11 points in the second quarter as the Jaguars took a 25-24 lead going into halftime.

It was more of the same in the third quarter. McGee scored eight of his 17 points and Witherspoon added seven of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter. D’Evelyn outscored Golden 24-11 in the third quarter.

It wasn’t all McGee and Witherspoon. Senior Brian Smith finished with 11 points, including two 3-pointers. Seniors Nate Flack, Trent Walker and junior Christian Denton finished with five points each.

“We have two exceptional players (McGee and Witherspoon), but I think the fallacy is that is all we have,” Pachner said. “They might set the table, but we had other kids hit shots. I’m proud of how we played tonight.”

Sophomore Nick Capaul’s 17 points off the bench led Golden. Sophomore Ryan Blodgett had a quick start scoring all eight of the Demons’ first quarter points, but he cooled off and finished with 10 points.

“We could have had a pretty good lead in that first quarter,” Golden coach John Anderson said. “We just tried to force it inside too many times. We were too impatient.”

Another thing that hurt the Demons was the loss of junior guard Ryan Thistlewood, who didn’t play in the second half after suffering an injury. Thistlewood scored six points before leaving the game.

It’s highly likely Golden and D’Evelyn will be in the mix for the Class 4A Jeffco League title when the conference schedule winds down six weeks from now. Golden (8-3,1-1 in league) was ranked No. 7 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A boys basketball poll, while D’Evelyn (7-2, 2-0) sat in the No. 8 slot.

Friday night was the second of what will for sure be at least three meetings on the hardwood between Golden and D’Evelyn.

The third meeting and second league battle will be Feb. 11 at Golden High School.

“Our goal is obviously a league championship,” Anderson said. “We’ve got to take care of business for that game to mean something toward the end of the year. The rubber match will be back at our place and we’ve got to be a lot better.”

Of course there is always a chance the two rivals could face each other in the 4A state tournament.

D’Evelyn continues its 14-game league schedule on the road against Alameda at 7 p.m. Jan. 15.

“It’s going to be a tougher league this year than last year, but we feel real good about ourselves,” Witherspoon said.

Golden gets back into action when it hosts Conifer at 7 p.m. Jan. 15.

THORNTON — The Horizon Hawks beat the Mountain Range Mustangs 76-61 on Friday night to a packed house of fans from both schools.

Horizon’s leading scorer was junior Matt Ramos with 23 points.

James Potter and Ben Egan both scored 14 points for Mountain Range.

  • Jackson hits buzzer-beater as Eaglecrest boys hoops beats Grandview

The 5A Centennial League has a long standing tradition of great conference battles in boys basketball. If Wednesday night’s Eaglecrest at Grandview rivalry game was any indication, that tradition should continue during the 2013-14 season.

Two games removed from a 55-54 loss to No. 1 Denver East right before the break when senior guard Jaisean Jackson missed a potential game-winning shot, this time Eaglecrest’s Jackson made an 18-foot buzzer-beating jumper to edge Grandview 55-53.

The defending state champion Raptors, ranked No. 6 in the current CHSAANow poll, were down 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 26-14 at halftime due to No. 8 Grandview’s solid defense and the Raptors’ inability to make shots or free-throws. Eaglecrest only made six field goals and went 2-8 from the charity stripe in the first half.

Grandview’s senior guard KyRon Allen hit two big three-pointers and had eight points, all in the first quarter, and fellow senior guard Armani Stevenson chipped in six by halftime. The first half was marred by several turnovers by both teams and some likely jitters in a rivalry game.

“We can’t play any worse in the first half and I think we just needed to settle down,” Eaglecrest coach John Olander said. “First league game, big crowd, great team that we were playing against and we just needed to play aggressive. We weren’t really playing that aggressive in the first half. (We were) settling for too many quick shots.”

The third quarter began with more cold shooting by the Raptors and they quickly went down 40-19 after a 14-5 run by Grandview.  Allen tallied six of the points during the run.

    (Brock Laue)
    (Brock Laue)

Eaglecrest then started to utilize the speed and defensive tenacity of Elijah Ross, LaDerian King and Jackson — a trio of athletic guards — to wreak havoc on the Wolves’ offense and get some easy transition buckets late in the third quarter. The Raptors also buried some big three-pointers and suddenly found themselves down only 40-32 going into the fourth.

6-foot-5 forward Blend Avdili had six points and several important rebounds in the quarter, and King had seven points.

The Raptors finally got hot on offense and had the ball with the game tied at 53 and 6.4 seconds on the clock. Out of a timeout, they put the ball in the hands of Jackson, a senior who started on last year’s state title team.

“I looked at the clock and it looked like less than a second,” Jackson said. “I put it up, follow through and everything, and it was bottom of the net.”

Eaglecrest outscored Grandview 23-12 in the final quarter to seal the win in a hostile environment and start conference play 1-0.

“It’s the first one in the league. This rivalry is a great rivalry, probably one of the best in the state,” Olander said. “To be able to come in here, I’m just really proud of my guys — every single one of them — to be able to come back from down twenty in the second half and they never quit.

“But you have to give Grandview credit. It’s hard to play with the lead, you’re trying to protect the lead. We were really aggressive and I think we were lucky to get out of here with one but we’ll take it.”

Jackson, despite a shot he will surely not forget, stood by the old one-game-at-a time approach.

“Just keep playing defense. Defense kept us in this game,” Jackson said. “They hit good shots, but we just had to keep playing defense and keep playing and keep playing and sooner or later we knew that they would get tired, turn the ball over.

“It’s just another ‘W,’ we have way more big games to go. This is just the beginning of winning league.”

Ross led the Raptors in scoring with 15 points, seven of which came in the final quarter.  Avdili chipped in nine points and Jackson and King each had seven.

Allen had a team high 14 points and Keanu Flores, a sharpshooter, had 10 — including three 3-pointers — for the Wolves.

Eaglecrest moved to 8-2 this season and 1-0 in arguably this year’s premier 5A boys basketball league, the Centennial. The Raptors will return to action against another tough opponent Friday night at 7 p.m. with a home contest against No. 10 Cherry Creek, a team that is also 1-0 in conference following a 58-45 win over No. 7 Arapahoe on Wednesday.

Grandview will have a home game against a solid Mullen Mustangs squad on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Centennial League currently has five teams ranked in the top-10 by CHSAANow and will certainly provide a bevy of competitive games all season long.

LITTLETON — It was clearly a team effort Tuesday night for Dakota Ridge’s boys basketball team in its Class 5A Jeffco League battle against Standley Lake.

Dakota Ridge (7-1, 2-0 in league) ran its winning streak to six games with a 56-50 victory over the Gators (6-4, 1-2). The key for the Eagles was a balanced scoring attack, led by seniors Jake Flores (12 points) and Jake Jones (11 points).

“I think we’ve almost had a different leading scorer almost every single game, which is good,” Dakota Ridge coach Curi Yutzy said of eight different players scoring in the conference win. “We have a nice balanced attack. We have a lot of guys who contribute.”

A lot of defensive pressure early by Dakota Ridge led to some easy buckets. The Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never trailed.

“We worked on trying to get a lot of ball pressure on,” Yutzy said on counteracting Standley Lake’s size advantage. “Obviously, we started on an 8-0 run and that was nice.”

Flores scored on a driving layup with 3:23 left in the fourth quarter, giving the Eagles their largest lead of the night, 48-36. However, one of the premier scorers in the state wouldn’t allow the Gators to go quietly.

Standley Lake senior Marcus Asmus kept the Gators above water for the majority of the night while pouring in a game-high 35 points.

“(Asmus) has worked so hard in the offseason,” Standley Lake coach Mike Puccio said his 6-foot-7 senior who drained three 3-pointers to go along with a solid inside game. “He went from strictly a post guy to a guy who has really worked on his game. It’s a nice story.”

Standley Lake’s 6-foot-8 senior Dylan Critchfield finished with six points, while juniors Jeremy Minnick, Lukas Gaudermann and sophomore Eric Turner each hit a 3-pointer to wrap up the scoring for the Gators.

Tuesday night’s matchup featured two head coaches that are Jeffco products. Yutzy, a 2000 graduate of Chatfield High School, is in his sixth year at the helm of Dakota Ridge’s boys basketball program. Puccio, a 2000 graduate of Green Mountain High School, is in also in his sixth season as the head coach at Standley Lake.

“Curi was a great player and he is doing a great job here,” Puccio said. “They play great. They are hard to guard. I like that team a lot.”

Yutzy and Puccio played against each other in high school and when both were at Division II college programs. They actually played together for a semipro basketball team — Colorado Crossover — eight years ago before both got their head coaching gigs.

“Puccio is a wonderful coach. He gets the most out of his kids every single year,” Yutzy said. “He is a heck of a coach and a heck of a person.”

Dakota Ridge continues conference play at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, when it host area rival Columbine (3-6, 1-1 in league).

“We’ve done a lot of great things, but we still have a lot more to do,” Flores said. “We’ve got a lot of room to grow. We can still get a lot better.”

The Rebels played an extremely challenging non-league schedule that featured three 5A teams currently ranked in the top 10 of the CHSAANow.com poll, along with 4A’s top-ranked Valor Christian. Columbine showed it could be in the mix for a league title after handing Standley Lake its first league defeat coming off winter break Jan. 4. The Gators were outscored 31-18 in the fourth quarter in the loss to the Rebels.

“We’ve got to do some things better,” Puccio said. “The effort was there tonight, minus some spots in the first quarter. I thought the guys played really hard tonight.”

Standley Lake’s next contest is at home against Arvada West (6-3, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10.
