Pueblo’s basketball programs on track to continue recent success

Pueblo South’s girls basketball team, pictured during last season’s championship game in Boulder. (Courtesy photo) PUEBLO — Just when it seemed Pueblo prep girls and boys basketball teams might become an afterthought to the rest of the state, there has been a statement made by the Steel City the last several years.
The Pueblo South and Pueblo West girls basketball teams are each coming off back-to-back Class 4A final four appearances and the Colts won state a year ago. On the boys side, South (2009) and East (2010) each lost in the state finals to Sierra. Pueblo West, meanwhile, lost in the state semifinals in 2011 to Windsor.
This season has a strong mix of old and new in Pueblo hoops and South’s girls team is taking aim at its sixth state crown.
“The biggest thing I told the girls is that we’re really not defending a state championship anymore,” veteran South coach Shannan Lane said. “Last year is done and gone. That trophy is won and we’re proud of that, but this is a new season and new challenges are ahead. I think the girls realize that and they have grown a lot as a team. We know we will probably go through some bumps and adversity, but we just hope we will put everything together at the right time.”
The Colts, who are No. 2 in the latest CHSAANow.com rankings, are led by senior guard/forward Shannon Patterson. The 5-foot-6 Patterson is a four-year starter for the Colts and has signed to play at Colorado State University-Pueblo. Through South’s first two wins this season, Patterson is averaging 24.5 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals.
“Our first step is to try and figure out the identity of our team,” Patterson said. “In the end, we want to play the toughest teams in the state and show them we deserved what we won last year. This year I just want to do whatever I need to in order to help us win.”
In addition, to Patterson, fellow starters Kendra Jesik, Jaylyn Duran (guards) and post player Sissy Hall are back. The task the Colts have is replacing graduated Mikala Gordon. The athletic guard/post player is now at Colorado Christian University.
“We need to see who is going to pick up the slack with Mikala gone,” Lane said.
Lane said freshman Maddie Leigh, who is 5-foot-9, is one candidate who could help fill Gordon’s void.
South’s rival Pueblo West is trying to reload after losing star post player Taylor Leyva to Northern Arizona University as well as other standout seniors.
“I think we are in a good place right now,” second-year coach Gil Lucero said. “I know a lot of people think because we graduated such a good class we would be down, but I feel like we have some strong returners and some girls who are ready to make a name for themselves.”
The Cyclones, who are No. 4 in the latest CHSAANow.com rankings, return two starters in guards senior Bri Rodriguez and junior Haley Simental.

Pueblo East’s Dylan Gavin. (Al Anderson) On the boys side, it appears Pueblo East and South will be the top teams in the South-Central League. East won the S-CL last year before being eliminated in the Sweet 16 by Cheyenne Mountain. The Eagles are No. 4 in the latest CHSAANow.com poll.
“The first goal is to win the S-CL and then go as far in the state playoffs as we can,” said East coach Dave Ryder, who is in his tenth season guiding the Eagles. “Last year we felt like we stubbed our toe pretty hard and we feel like there is a little bit of redemption to try and advance. We just want to be the best competitive team we can be and let everything pan out on the floor.”
The Eagles return starters point guard T.J. Gradisar and post players Dylan Gavin and Jimmy Valdez, all are seniors.
“The S-CL is going to be very competitive this season and I think we can compete with any of the Class 4A teams in the state,” Ryder said. “There are some really good teams in 4A, but we know we can make a run if we get a little luck and a couple of bounces go the right way for us.”
Pueblo South’s boys squad also could turn some heads this season. The Colts are paced by veteran guard Jared Baros and post player Trey Parker, but they also have a slew of young talent in their program. Pueblo West has been strong in recent seasons, but will have to regroup after being depleted by graduation. Central could be a sleeper team with high-scoring sophomore Michael Ranson supplying the roar for the Wildcats.

Quick start propels Fredrick past Wheat Ridge in boys hoops

Fredrick senior Alex Therrien (20) attempts to block the shot of Wheat Ridge sophomore Damian Padilla on Monday night. Therrien made his mark on the offensive end also, scoring a game-high 20 points that included draining four 3-pointers in Fredrick’s 74-56 victory. (Dennis Pleuss) WHEAT RIDGE — Fredrick senior Alex Therrien was elusive Monday night at Wheat Ridge High School.
The Warriors’ sharp-shooting senior scored a game-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers in the first half, to guide Fredrick to a 74-56 road victory against the Wheat Ridge Farmers.
“We lost (Therrien) too many times in the mix,” Wheat Ridge coach Tommy Dowd said after his Farmers dropped to 1-3 on the season.
Fredrick jumped out to a 17-0 lead to start the game. Wheat Ridge finally got on the scoreboard when senior Stefan Hackethal scored with 1:46 left in the first quarter.
Hackethal, Wheat Ridge’s leading scorer, was held to just two points. Fredrick coach Larry Frank admitted the defensive focus for the Warriors was to shut down Hackethal.
“We started out pretty good defensively,” said Frank, who used the combination of junior Mikail Lowney and senior Michael Broz to stay lockdown Hackethal.

Wheat Ridge sophomore Nicco Young, left, tries to keep Fredrick sophomore Chelton Lebon from stealing the ball during the first half Monday night at Wheat Ridge High School. Young led the Farmers with 12 points, but the Warriors scored a 74-56 road victory. (Dennis Pleuss) The Warriors (2-1) were coming off a tough overtime loss last Friday at Longmont.
“We were really mad about that (loss) and wanted redemption,” Therrien said. “We came out hot and we knew what we had to do. We got the job done.”
Fredrick will host Silver Creek at 6:30 p.m. Friday before heading to the deep Prairie View Tournament next week.
“That is always a tough one for us,” Frank said of the Prairie View Tournament that features six 5A schools. “We are one of only two 4A schools in the tournament. We go there for a reason. We’ll learn and work on some things and hopefully be competitive.”
Along with Therrien, Ryan Yancey (15 points) and Broz (14 points) finished in double-digit points for the Warriors.
The young Wheat Ridge squad has just two seniors this season. The Farmers did cut the Warriors’ lead to 11 points on a few occasions Monday, but could never get the lead under double digits after falling behind early on.
Sophomore Nicco Young led the Farmers with 12 points. Junior Drew Mullberry came off the bench to pitch in 10 points in the loss.
Wheat Ridge won’t have to think about the loss for long. The Farmers get right back on the court Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff at Holy Family.
“I think it’s good. We don’t have to dwell over this for long,” Young said. “If we can work together we can get the win.”
The Farmers play on back-to-back nights Thursday and Friday with home games against Class 5A Jeffco squads in Lakewood and Pomona.
“You’ve got to be patient and let kids learn on the fly a little bit,” Dowd said. “I’m just disappointed we didn’t compete earlier in the game tonight.”

Rangeview, Fossil Ridge move up in 5A boys basketball ranking

(Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com) Rangeview and Fossil Ridge both made big jumps in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A boys basketball poll.
Rangeview, ranked fifth last week, is up to No. 3 following a 2-0 week. Included was a 74-70 win over then-No. 9 Chaparral.
Fossil Ridge, meanwhile, went from sixth to fourth after going 3-0 last week. The standout win was a 58-51 win over then-No. 3 Eaglecrest.
The 5A ranking continued to be led by Denver East, which has also started 3-0 at the Great Western Shootout in Utah. Overland remained in the No. 2 spot despite going 1-2 at the same tournament.
Highlands Ranch rounds out the 5A top 5.
The other No. 1 teams also stayed the same this week: Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A), Sanford (2A) and Caliche (1A).

Golden rallies to set up early hoops showdown with No. 6 D’Evelyn

Golden sophomore Ryan Blodgett, left, drives on Elizabeth junior Jake Gavitt during the semifinal of the D’Evelyn/Golden Preview Classic on Friday night at Golden High School. Blodgett scored 19 points, while Gavitt had a game-high 29 points in the semifinal that Golden rallied to win 80-70. (Dennis Pleuss) GOLDEN — Golden boys basketball coach John Anderson knows at least one thing about his team early on this season — the Demons don’t fear deficits.
Golden rallied from an 11-point deficit early in the third quarter to Elizabeth on Friday night at Golden High School. The Demons dominated the second half to pull away with an eventual 80-70 victory in the semifinal of the D’Evelyn/Golden Preview Classic.
“We played well together in the second half and rebounded well,” said Golden junior Cole Greff, who led the Demons with 21 points. “I think the biggest thing we did was control our turnovers and we controlled the pace.”
Golden’s 27-point fourth quarter propelled the Demons (2-0) into the championship game against Class 4A Jeffco rival D’Evelyn (2-0). The Jaguars handled Pueblo Central 74-63 in the other semifinal that was played Friday night at D’Evelyn.

Golden sophomore Cole Harris, right, looks for an open teammate while being guarded by Elizabeth junior Stuart Eurich on Friday night. Harris had a pair of 3-pointers in the first quart for the Demons. (Dennis Pleuss) The tournament title game — 7 p.m. Saturday at Golden High School — will be the first of three scheduled meetings between Golden and D’Evelyn on the hardwood this season. The two league foes will meet twice in conference games in January and February. Anderson doesn’t mind facing the D’Evelyn in a non-league game during the first week of the season.
“I don’t know if playing D’Evelyn three times is great, but I want to beat them. It’s been awhile,” Anderson said. “It’s a good early season test against one of the better teams in the state.”
D’Evelyn was ranked sixth in the 4A CHSAANow.com preseason poll that was released Monday.
Friday, the Demons were able to overcome a great night from Elizabeth junior Jake Gavitt, who finished with a game-high 29 points. Gavitt was one of four Cardinals in double-digits scoring. He was also a perfect 14-for-14 from the free-throw line.
“(Gavitt) just knows how to score,” Anderson said. “Our goal was to make him shoot over our bigs. If he gets to the rim he is pretty tough.”
Golden’s defense stiffed in the fourth quarter, limiting Elizabeth to just four field goals. Gavitt hit a 3-pointer with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter to cut the Demons’ lead to 72-70, it was the Cardinals final points as Golden finished the game with a 8-0 run in the final minute.
Seniors James Christiansen (14 points), Ryan White (12 points) and junior Aaron Stone (11 points) were the other big scorers for the Cardinals. However, Golden bench outscored Elizabeth’s reserves 13-0.

Golden junior Cole Greff, far left, snags a rebound away from Elizabeth’s Stuart Eurich and Brandon Severinson on Friday night at Golden High School. Greff had a team-high 21 points for the Demons in a 80-70 victory. (Dennis Pleuss) Golden junior Ryan Thistlewood, a transfer from Ralston Valley, hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points after not scoring in the first half. The junior’s 3-pointer with 5:39 tied the game at 63.
“I like shooting 3s. That’s pretty much what I do,” Thistlewood said. “I just had to stay focused and find my shot.”
Golden hit eight 3-pointers on the night. Sophomore Cole Harris hit a pair in the first quarter. Junior Jesse Capul added one in the second quarter, but the biggest probably came from junior Phil Katzman. The 3-pointer from Katzman with 2:50 left in the game extended Golden’s lead to 72-67.
“We didn’t know how good of an outside shooting team we would be,” Anderson said. “We’ve hit some pretty big 3s the last couple of nights.”
The Demons’ frontcourt tandem of Greff and sophomore Ryan Blodgett combined for 40 points. The 6-foot-5 Blodgett scored eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter while playing with four fouls the majority of the final quarter.
Elizabeth led nearly the entire game leading up to the fourth quarter.
“(Golden) made some good adjustments in the second half and we couldn’t adjust back to it,” Elizabeth coach Mike Boss said. “Offensively we are fine. Defensively we’ve just got to get better.”
The Cardinals will face Pueblo Central in the third-place game scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at D’Evelyn.
