  • Nine new members join the CHSAA Hall of Fame as the 2017 class

    AURORA — The members of the 2017 CHSAA Hall of Fame were inducted during a ceremony on Wednesday night at the Radisson Hotel Denver Southeast.

    Tricia Bader-Binford (Roaring Fork), Jenny Coalson (Ellicott) Joe Silva (Fruita Monument), Bobbi Brown-Vandenberg (Boulder), Don Kimble (Limon), Ken Shaw (Regis Jesuit), Kent Smith (Boulder/Highlands Ranch/Ponderosa), Brian Richmond (Fort Collins) and L. D. Elarton (Lamar) were all inducted on Wednesday.

    The nine new members are the 29th in the history of the CHSAA Hall of Fame, which was started in 1989.

    Bader-Binford spoke for the class at the conclusion of the ceremony, saying, “This is an honor that we share with our communities. It is clear that we achieved because people believed in us. People believed in us, they supported us, they provided us the chance to be great.”

    “The opportunities CHSAA has provided has changed each of us for the better,” Bader-Binford added.

    Biographies of each new member are below, via the press release announcing the new members last October. With their inclusion the CHSAA Hall of Fame now has 197 members.

    2017 CHSAA Hall of Fame class

    Tricia Bader Binford (Roaring Fork HS): A three-sport athlete – basketball, volleyball and track – Bader was a five-time state track champion, three-time all-state basketball player and led the Rams to the 1989, 1990 and 1991 state basketball titles. She was a three-time all-state player and the player of the year as a senior.

    She won the 1991 Rocky Mountain News’ Steinmark Award and RHS has named its “Three-Sport Athlete Award” after her.

    A former WNBA and Australian professional player, Bader is the head coach at Montana State where she was the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year in 2015-16.

    As great as she was on the court, she was equally great off it, maintaining great character, and inspiring many young women in rural communities to become involved in sports.

    A girls’ coach for 32 years in Colorado and Wisconsin, Brown was the architect of one of the strongest girls’ basketball programs in Colorado.

    Her BHS teams were 182-28, winning the 1984, 1986, 1989 (undefeated), 1990 and 1991 state titles. Her 1985 and 1992 teams finished second. She also took a leave of absence in the middle of her Boulder tenure to finish her graduate studies.

    A former CU basketball player, was also an assistant varsity football coach in 1990, coaching wide receivers and defensive backs. She coached at Fairview and Boulder from 1981 until 1992.

    She was Coach of the Year by The Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News and Boulder Daily Camera five times.

    She is currently the Viterbo University (La Crosse, WI) women’s basketball coach.

    Jenny Coalson (Ellicott HS): Coalson was a three-sport athlete at Ellicott, leading her team to two state basketball championships and winning four state individual track titles, while placing 10 more times.

    She won the triple jump as a freshman, the 200 meters and shot put as a junior, along with winning the long jump as a senior. The 2A Basketball Player of the Year twice in basketball, Coalson was all-state in basketball (twice) and volleyball (once).

    She was selected to the CCGS and CHSCA All-State Teams in both sports as a senior. In addition, she is a Little Britches world champion rodeo performer.

    She won the 1995 Rocky Mountain News’ Steinmark Award She went on to play and excel in basketball at Kansas State.

    Eldon “L.D.” Elarton (Lamar Schools): One of the state’s most respected administrators, Elarton’s career as a student participant, teacher, coach and administrator was steeped in Lamar.

    A native of the community, he played baseball, basketball and football, was student body president and an all-state participant for LHS. After college, he returned home to teach and coach, starting in 1968 and moved up the ranks, serving as teacher, assistant principal, principal, finance director and superintendent.

    As a coach, Elarton earned Baseball Coach of the Year honors in the Will Rogers League at Widefield High School. Once returning to Lamar, he initiated the Academic Letter Award, host numerous CHSAA Music and Speech events, while the school’s baseball, wrestling and girls’ basketball teams won 10 state titles among them. He was active on the state and national scene through CASE and NASSP.

    Don Kimble (Limon HS): A music teacher who established one of the finest music programs, the late Don Kimble taught music for the Badgers for 29 years after one year at Flagler.

    His bands received 26 first division ratings in state large group festivals, both in performance and sight-reading. The marching band also won state recognition in 1977 for its field performances.

    Kimble directed four different bands at Limon, the fourth-grade band, fifth-grade beginning band, the Cadet Band (6, 7 & 8 graders) and the Senior High School Band. He taught Music Appreciation and took his pep bands to many out-of-town athletic contests. He was also assigned three choirs to conduct.

    Kimble was a master at balancing the demands for his students between athletics and his music programs.

    Brian Richmond (Fort Collins): One of the state’s top gymnastics coaches and judge, Richmond coached high school for 17 years, but has been a high school judge since 1971.

    He coached gymnastics at four high schools – Jefferson, Poudre, Fort Collins and Thompson Valley – with the PHS team winning the 1984 title and runners up in 1985.

    A former CSU gymnast and coach, Richmond became one of the top judges in the state, as well as one the national and international scene. He judged 20 CHSAA boys’ state meets and has been a mainstay with the girls’ state meet, having worked 35 of those. He has judged on the national and international stage.

    He was inducted in the National Gymnastics Judges Association Hall of Fame in 2011.

    Ken Shaw (Merino, Yuma, Sterling, Rocky Mountain, Smoky Hill, Regis Jesuit HS): One of the state’s legendary athletes who become one of Colorado’s top prep basketball coaches, Shaw guided his Merino team to a pair of state tiles, while going undefeated.

    He was a prolific high school athlete at Merino, and held the career scoring record when his career was over. That mark has since been broken, but Shaw’s name still dots the basketball record book as a player. Additionally, Shaw was a standout football player, and has his name in that sport’s record book.

    As a coach, his teams have won more than 710 games and he guided Regis to three straight 5A championships. His teams also won titles two other times, at Yuma and Sterling.

    His teams have a record 29 the state tournament appearances.

    Joe Silva (Fruita Monument HS): A Bronze Star Recipient in Vietnam, Silva was a three-time state wrestling champion for Fruita Monument and compiled a 58-0-2 mark in his career.

    In 12 state matches, opponents scored just 6 points on him. He also participated in football and baseball.

    He is a former District 51 Teacher of the Year and taught 29 years at Fruita Middle School. During that time, he, along with 2016 inductee Ray Coca and others broadcast the Western Slope State Championship matches on radio and television.

    From 1963-65, Fruita enjoyed much success in wrestling, baseball and football. The constant on these teams was Silva. The school won two wrestling team titles and the football team was state runner up twice and baseball once over the period.

    Kent Smith (Boulder, Ponderosa, Aurora Central, Highlands Ranch, La Veta, Alamosa): Having just retired after 53 years of coaching, Smith is one of the state’s top coaches, regardless of sport. And, he is noted for his integrity and ability to build better people through activities.

    He has been the head boys’ basketball coach at Boulder and Ponderosa, the head cross country coach at Ponderosa and Highlands Ranch, as well as the head boys’ soccer coach at Aurora Central. Additionally, he served as head girls’ basketball coach at La Veta and Alamosa.

    His teams have won state titles in basketball (twice at Boulder) and cross country (six times at Highlands Ranch). He runs a dog and horse rescue ranch near Walsenburg.

    A roundup of Jeffco prep highlights from November with Dennis Pleuss, Jeffco Public Schools’ Communication Specialist. This month’s edition features state gymnastics action where Jeffco schools continued its dominance. Chatfield and Columbine football rolled to playoff opening victories. Chatfield, Pomona, Wheat Ridge, Columbine and Bear Creek spirit squads all won Jeffco League titles at the conference championships. Several Jeffco schools had student-athletes sign their National Letter of Intent during the early signing period that began Nov. 8. We also look back at the legacy left by Arvada West pitching great Roy Halladay.

  • All-state gymnastics teams for the 2017 season

    The 2017 all-state gymnastics teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created based upon results at the state meet. The following criteria was used:

    • Athletes who won an event or finished in the top three in the all-around, and/or won an individual event, were named to the first team.
    • Athletes who finished fourth or fifth in the all-around, and/or finished second or third in an individual event were named to the second team.
    • The athletes who won all-around championships in their classification were named gymnast of the year.
    • Coaches who led their teams teams to championships were named coaches of the year.

  • State gymnastics: Elizabeth’s Buzalsky wins three events; Green Mountain’s Sinha claims vault

    THORNTON — Green Mountain senior Ramya Sinha sang the national anthem and then played spoiler on the final day of the 3-day state gymnastics meet at Thornton High School.

    “I really was (nervous),” Sinha said of singing the anthem Saturday afternoon. “Once I got that over with I was like, now I can focus on my gymnastics. It was such an honor to sing here.”

    What Sinha’s focus did was prevent Elizabeth junior Anastasia Buzalsky from sweeping the all-around — which Buzalsky won the Friday night — and all four Class 4A event finals held Saturday. Sinha took the vault title with a score of 9.625 to beat Buzalsky’s score of 9.600. Buzalsky won the 4A uneven bars, beam and floor titles.

    Sinha was a member of the Rams’ 4A state championship team last year. Elizabeth took the team title Friday to prevent a repeat by Green Mountain, who placed third.

    “It was definitely bittersweet,” Sinha said while adding she likely won’t compete at the college level. “I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was like 1-year-old. I had a blast. I stayed positive and have fun no matter what. I’m excited about the future, but sad it’s over. (Gymnastics) was a big part of my life.”

    Another senior wrapping up her prep gymnastics career with an individual title was Arvada West’s Shaye Mathias. She was able to stake claim to the 5A beam title with a score of 9.800.

    “I was really nervous about beam because it’s my best event,” said Mathias, who was the last competitor on the beam. “I really wanted to win that. It’s my thing.”

    Lakewood junior Amber Boll was up to the challenge in the vault. After Cherry Creek’s Ana George posted a 9.950, Boll followed that up matching the score and then taking the title in a tiebreaker.

    “I was nervous,” Boll said of following George’s 9.95 score on the vault. “I just had to get my head in the game. I know how to do the skill. It was really exciting.”

    Boll wasn’t able to defend her event title in the uneven bars, but she wasn’t too upset. Pomona junior Brooke Weins won the event with a 9.85.

    “It was a little sad I lost the title,” Boll said of losing out to Weins in an attempt to repeat. “I am so glad that my friend (Brooke) was able to win that title.”

    Weins was last year’s 5A all-round state champion, but ankle and knee injuries limited the junior to compete just in the uneven bars at state.

    “That was very special,” Pomona coach Tracey Boychuk said of Weins winning the uneven bars title. “It’s been hard on her not being able to compete.”

    Pomona grabbed its third-straight 5A team title Thursday and Wheat Ridge sophomore Kaylie Berens, who competes for Pomona, became the fourth-straight Panther to win the 5A all-around title.

    Kelsey Boychuk (Tracey’s daughter) won back-to-back all-around titles in 2014 and 2015. Weins claimed the title last year. Berens kept the tradition going in 2017.

    “It’s pretty impressive,” coach Boychuk said of the Panthers having three all-around state champions on this year’s team. “They are pretty impressive young women.”

    It was part dance party and part gymnastics meet for Berens on Saturday. The sophomore was having fun dancing to music being played for floor routines while she waited for her events. Berens said she was pretty relaxed and her main goal to have fun as the gymnastics season came to a close.

    She did reflect on continuing the tradition of Pomona winning not only the team title, but the individual all-around title.

    “I look up to Kelsey and Brooke so much,” Berens said. “I want to follow after them. It’s been pretty amazing.”

    Kelsey Boychuk, who will continue her career at Iowa State University next fall, wasn’t able to grab an event title in her final prep competition. However, that wasn’t the focus for the Pomona senior.

    “It’s kind of a weird book-ended story for her,” Coach Boychuk said of her daughter. “Her (freshman) year she got the all-around title, but we didn’t get the team title. Now she doesn’t get the all-around or an individual title, but we get the team title. I think that means more to her than anything right now. Her main goal was the team this year.”

    Ponderosa’s Katherine Compton won the 5A floor event wit ha 9.825, and a tiebreaker of 9.825.

    Jeffco schools came away with titles in 4 of 8 event finals Saturday.

    “It’s a big testament to Jeffco gymnastics and the support we get from athletic directors and school, across the board,” Coach Boychuk said. “We really don’t want to see this sport die, that’s evident.”

  • 4A state gymnastics: Elizabeth wins team and all-around championships

    THORNTON — The state championship hung in the balance and — after Elizabeth had a performance worth smiling about on the beam — the Cardinals laid claim to their fourth title in gymnastics.

    On top of that, Elizabeth junior Anastasia Buzalsky won the all-around individual state championship.

    Oh, and the program has only been in existence since 2006. In that short time frame, the Cardinals have snatched crowns in 2009, 2010, 2012, and now 2017. They have also garnered four runner-up trophies and had two other all-around winners (Katie Cordova in 2009 and Kimmy Peterson in 2012).

    The tradition of excellence continued Friday at the Class 4A state meet with a winning margin of 179.150-176.750 over Niwot. But, it didn’t come without a sprinkle of adversity.

    After the first rotation, Niwot (89.625) took a lead on Elizabeth (87.45) on the strength of solid performances in the floor (44.85) and vault (44.775) competitions. Elizabeth countered with a 44.475 in floor, but struggled in bars with a 42.975. In fact, the Cardinals only had two finishers in the top 15 in that discipline.

    That’s when Elizabeth had to deliver on their motto.

    “Our motto all season has been ‘get gritty’ and we’ve been talking a lot about the definition of grit and what it means to you, what it means to our team,” Stacey Folmar, the program’s head coach since the beginning, said. “After beam, it was clear they got it. They did what they needed to do when it mattered most.”

    In the balance beam, grit meshed with skill as Elizabeth swept the top four places with Rachel Jorgensen (9.375), Aliyah Antunez (9.325), Austin Coleman (9.300), and Emily Schaefer (9.200) all stepping up. Just before the beam, Anastasia Buzalsky (9.575, 1st) led a group of five finishers in the top 15 in the vault exercise.

    It all added up to another glistening piece of hardware to bring back to a proud community.

    “Elizabeth is so great about supporting us,” Folmar said. “For a small town, they’re a gymnastics town when it comes to this time of the year. It’s so gratifying for us to bring it back to them.”

    It may not have been done without the addition of Buzalsky, a super talent who burst onto the high school scene for the first time after spending previous years only competing in club. The junior has certainly embraced the team atmosphere.

    “I didn’t really have a team before,” she said. “This has been one of the best experiences. It means everything.”

    Buzalsky struggled in bars and beam by her lofty standards, but finished first in floor (9.550) and vault. She was the only competitor to rack up a score above 37 in the all-around total as her 37.125 outdid Niwot’s Lindsay Chohon (36.675). Green Mountain’s Ramya Sinha (36.250) and Emily Graham (36.225) earned third and fourth place, respectively.

    Folmar had the chance to coach Buzalsky at a young age and noticed her bright future right away.

    “I knew from the time she was nine years old that she is amazing,” Folmar said. “She can be in bed sleeping, wake up, walk out and lay a dismount. We knew right off the bat she was going to be a huge factor for our team.”

    Green Mountain, Rampart, and Pueblo Central rounded out the top five in the standings.

    The 4A and 5A state meet will continue on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Those who finished in the top 15 in any of the four disciplines will have the opportunity to compete for individual crowns.

  • 5A state gymnastics: Pomona edges out three-peat title win

    THORNTON — Pomona gymnastics won its third-straight state title on Thursday.

    “It’s amazing. It really is amazing,” Pomona coach Tracey Boychuk said after the meet. “I couldn’t be prouder to be a Pomona Panther. Our school is so behind us. They were really rooting for us.”

    Pomona beat Overland by 0.025 points in the Class 5A state gymnastics meet. The Panthers saw their lead fall away going into the last event, but they came up when they needed it most on the uneven bars.

    “I’m so proud of this team for everything that we’ve done,” the Panthers’ Kaylie Berens said. “We had to fight to get back, but we pulled it together.”

    Pomona also claimed the all-around title as Berens (38.8) edged out Arvada West’s Shaye Mathais (38.675).

    “I was not expecting this by any means,” Berens said. “I was more worried about the team, but it’s an amazing feeling. I’m proud of myself. It’s been one of my best meets.”

    As the events went on, it became clear that the team race would come down to two teams: Pomona and Overland.

    Pomona held a slim lead over Overland and Thornton after one rotation. The Panthers turned in a score of 46.90 on the floor, while Overland followed with 46.50 on beam and Thornton posted a 46.35 on vault.

    “Stay positive. You have to keep being in it,” Berens said. “We tried really hard not to worry about what everyone else was doing. We knew that if we did our best, we would come out on top.”

    Pomona’s 47.825 on vault saw the Panthers begin to find some distance in the team race. Overland stayed close with a score of 46.50 on bars, while Thornton fell off with a 46 on beam.

    Overland knew it had to put something together with its best two events coming up. The Trailblazers responded with a 47.75 on floor.

    Pomona’s beam score of 45.575 put them down by 0.45 heading to the last rotation.

    The Panther’s Kelsey Boychuk did not have her score counted on the balance beam because of a rule violation, which put Overland in first place for a moment.

    “Her score did not count because of the time it took for her to recover from an injury,” CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Bert Borgmann said. “The time exceeded the allotted time allowed for her to remount and complete her routine.”

    Pomona came up with the performance it needed on the uneven bars. Pomona finished with a 47.775 on the bars, while Overland was unable to make up the ground with a 47.30 on vault.

    “We wanted to really focus on ourselves and us as a team,” Tracey Boychuk said. “Do what we know the girls can do. Focus on what they’re doing and not worry what everyone else was doing.”

    The Panthers finished with 188.075 points to win their third-straight title. Overland finished with 188.05 — good for a runner-up finish.

    “So many people told me that we lost,” Berens said after the meet. “I was so expecting them to call Pomona as second. But, they called Overland (as the second place finisher) and it was insane, I couldn’t even believe it. I’m on top of the world right now.”

    Thornton, Broomfield and Lakewood rounded out the top five.
