CENTENNIAL — Resurrection Christian is moving on in the hockey playoffs after upsetting No. 3-seeded Doherty in the first round on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars (15-5-0), a No. 6 seed out of the Foothills Conference, got two goals from Kyle Lish, went 2-for-4 on the power play and outshot Doherty 42-22 in the 3-0 win.

“Not seeing them all year, it’s kind of an unknown,” said Resurrection Christian coach Jake Pence. “They have some big scorers on their team. You watch their film and they’ve got some really good players.

“We wanted to go in like we were playing against the best team in the state. That’s playoff hockey. You play your best, and survive and advance.”

Lish scored the first goal 8:15 into the first on the power play. He was headed for a line change, but rocketed a shot from along the right boards — and beyond the faceoff circle — before he did. It rippled the top-right corner of the net after deflecting off the glove of Doherty goalie Jack Gault.

“I was ready to get off, and I just ripped a shot and it went under the bar,” said Lish, who now has 23 goals this season. “I think it calmed the nerves and helped the boys to get at it.”

Doherty responded with a number of chances in the second period, but wasn’t able to break through.

“That second period came around and they had a lot of opportunities,” Pence said. “I thought (we) weathered the storm really well. They jumped in front of a lot of shots to block them, and they just weathered the storm. That’s huge.”

Quinn Finer added a second power play goal with a nice deflection in front of the net. Lish then added the final score with 4:56 to play when he corralled a loose puck in front of the net and backhanded it home along the ice.

“He’s been just a force for us scoring goals,” Pence said of Lish. “He’s been consistent all year long with that.”

Doherty went 0-for-2 on the power play. Combined with the two power play goals that continued Resurrection Christian’s success in that area — the Cougars scored on 38 percent of power plays during the regular season — it made for a good special teams outing.

“Special teams is a big focus for us,” Lish said. “We have a good power play because our PK gives us a good run for our money in practice.”

Dylan Griffith stopped all 22 shots he faced for his fifth shutout this season.

    Doherty ends the year 15-4-1.

Resurrection Christian advances to play No. 2 seed Regis Jesuit in Saturday’s second round. The Raiders beat Heritage 8-0 in the first round on Friday.

The two teams met during the regular season, a 7-1 Regis win on Feb. 7.

“Regis is a really disciplined team,” Pence said. “We lost to them pretty bad earlier in the year, so we need to come back with a different mentality against those guys.”

ARVADA — Two-time defending hockey champion Ralston Valley began its title defense with a 10-0 win over Pine Creek in the first round of the state tournament on Friday.

Jeff Moffat had two goals and two assists, while Tony Salazar and Matt Trubacz each had a goal and two assists. Dominic Gomez stopped all eight shots he faced for his third shutout of the season.

  • Photos: DeKramer’s late tally lifts Cherry Creek hockey

ARVADA — Sean DeKramer made a great individual move with 1:25 to play and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as Cherry Creek hockey edged Lewis-Palmer in the first round of hockey’s playoffs on Friday.

The Bruins added two empty-net goals to win 4-1.

The game was evenly matched throughout. Nick Chavez gave Creek a 1-0 lead with a power play tally in the first period, but Zachary Williams responded for Lewis-Palmer midway through the second.

They remained deadlocked — both teams had their chances — until DeKramer’s late goal.

Tim Keohane and Pieter Gesink scored the empty-net goals.

Brady Mielnicki made 25 saves for Cherry Creek, while Lewis-Palmer’s Marcus Smith stopped 26 shots.

Cherry Creek took down two-time defending champion Ralston Valley in the quarterfinals of hockey’s state tournament on Saturday.

The Bruins (17-4-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Max Tennant and Jack Venuto in the first period. That would be all they needed, as the No. 5 seed held on for a 2-1 win over No. 1 Ralston Valley.

It is the biggest win for Cherry Creek since the program was revived following a 25-year hiatus in 2012-13.

Cherry Creek was also in the semifinals last year, where the Bruins lost to Ralston Valley 6-2.

Bruins goalie Brady Mielnicki had a huge game — including a big penalty kill late in the third period.

Ralston Valley (18-2-1) scored with eight seconds left in the game.

    (3) Dakota Ridge 3, (2) Air Academy 2

Dakota Ridge built a 2-0 lead after the first period, added another goal midway through the second, and the Eagles beat Air Academy 3-2 in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

It’s just the latest in what has been a banner year for the Eagles, who started their program in 2007. Last season, Dakota Ridge qualified for the postseason for the first time in program history. On Friday, the Eagles won a postseason game for the first time.

Now, Dakota Ridge is in the semifinals — another first for the program.

Saturday, Zach Williams and Reed Hoogenboom staked Dakota Ridge to the 2-0 lead. Air Academy cut it to 2-1 on Jonathan Valtin’s unassisted power play goal 9:48 into the second, but Dakota Ridge answered with Graehm Konsella’s goal just 58 seconds later.

Air Academy did make it a one-goal game with another power play goal later in the second period, but the Kadets couldn’t score again.

Joey Owston was a star in net for Dakota Ridge, making 41 saves. Air Academy’s Jason Stolz stopped 26 shots.

Dakota Ridge will face Cherry Creek in the semifinals.

  • Hockey weather contigencies for first- and second-round games

The following weather contingencies concerning hockey games to be played Feb. 27-28 has been emailed to member schools:

With the impending forecasts for winter storms throughout Colorado the remainder of this week, it is imperative that the schools participating in the state ice hockey tournament be in contact with the site director for updated weather and contest information.

Please note that as of February 26, all tournament games are expected to run as scheduled. Should that change because of weather, the site director will make that decision based on the weather conditions in that area and the travel conditions for teams assigned to each site. The CHSAA Inclement Weather and Acts of God Policy (page 138 in the Constitution and Bylaw Handbook) will be followed.

Should the event be postponed by weather, the expectation is that the game(s) be rescheduled for the next available day, which includes Sunday, March 1. The site director, in concert with the participating school Athletic Director and the CHSAA office, will make the final decisions.

Regardless of the weather this weekend, the State Tournament venue at the Budweiser Events Center is contracted for the semifinals on March 5th with the Championship game on March 7th. • Mountain Vista, Ralston Valley top seeds in hockey’s state bracket

Hockey’s state tournament bracket is out. Mountain Vista and Ralston Valley are the top seeds in each conference.

Other top seeds include Regis Jesuit, Air Academy, Dakota Ridge and Doherty. See the full bracket here.

Mountain Vista won the Peak Conference by virtue of going 12-1-0 in conference games. Air Academy was second in the Peak at 11-2-0, while Doherty was third at 9-3-1.

Ralston Valley and Regis Jesuit tied atop the Foothills Conference with 27 points each, but Ralston took the top seed on the fourth tie-breaker. The two teams tied in their lone head-to-head matchup on Feb. 14, and they also had an equal amount of wins against conference opponents, as well as an identical record.

That left it to goals allowed in conference games. Ralston Valley allowed fewer (11) than Regis (18), so the Mustangs are the top seed out of the Foothills. Had the two teams also been tied in that category, they would have gone to a coin-flip.

Ralston Valley is the two-time defending champion.

Regis grabs the two seed, while Dakota Ridge is the three seed after breaking a three-way tie with Monarch and Cherry Creek. Monarch is the No. 4 seed, Cherry Creek is No. 5.

Games begin on Friday, with the second round on Saturday. The semifinals are March 5 at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland. The championship game is March 7 at 2 p.m., also at Budweiser Events.

Dominic Gomez stopped all nine shots he faced for his second shutout this season.

Ralston Valley put 50 shots on net. Standley Lake’s Joshua Benton made 45 saves.

  • Ralston Valley up to No. 2 in hockey rankings

One week remains in hockey’s regular season. And CHSAANow.com’s voters seem pretty set on the top-10 teams in the sport.

For the second week in a row, there were no newcomers to the poll.

Regis Jesuit stayed atop things this week, taking eight of the nine first-place votes and totalling 88 points. The Raiders suffered their first blemish of the season last week in a 2-2 tie with then-No. 3 Ralston Valley.

For its effort, Ralston Valley moved into the No. 2 spot, narrowly ahead of Mountain Vista — a team that handed the Mustangs their lone loss earlier this season.

Monarch moved up to No. 4, jumping Cherry Creek, a team it beat last week.

Dakota Ridge is No. 6, and spots Nos. 7-10 stayed the same: Air Academy, Resurrection Christian, Doherty and Lewis-Palmer.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These will be the last polls of the regular season with the bracket due out on Sunday.

  • Regis Jesuit and Ralston Valley hockey battle to a draw

CENTENNIAL — At this point, when Regis Jesuit takes the ice, they know they are getting their opposition’s best shot.

Such was the case again on Friday night, as the No. 1 Red Raiders (16-0-0 overall, 12-0-0 Foothills Conference) would need a goal with less than a minute to go to tie the No. 2 Ralston Valley Mustangs (15-1-1, 11-0-1) 2-2 after an explosive back-and-forth affair.

“I’m real proud of the way these guys are as a team,” Regis coach Dan Woodley said of his team. “It was nice to see them stay together and weather those storms as a team, and to see it pay off with the late goal at the end when we were really under the gun.”

The late goal from team captain Jack Jordan may have saved the point, but the team weathered the storms from the Mustangs due in large part to goaltender Sam Gartner, who once again showed that he has a flare for stepping up in big games by stopping 24 of 26 shots on net.

    Regis Jesuit Ralston Valley hockey

“Sam has great mental capacity that helps him get into his highest playing level,” Woodley said. “He’s played a lot of minutes for us in preparation of what’s awaiting us here at the end of the season.”

The first period began like many other top-notch schools taking on the Foothills Conference top dogs. Pace of play and precision passing fueled an early onslaught for the Mustangs, while Regis used their size to dictate physical play and create turnovers.

Ralston’s top line of leading scorers Jeff Moffat, Tony Salazar, and Stefan Fruhwirth led the way, providing their team’s sustained pressure midway through the period.

However, with just a few minutes left in the period it was Regis’s Grant Johnson and John Kane that managed the best scoring chance of the period, turning a speedy transition into a 2 on 1 break that Mustang goaltender Scott Albertoni, who made 13 saves of his own in the contest, barely managed to get a pad on.

The teams continued to trade blows in the second, but a careful pace had replaced the breakneck speed of the first period. The result was a series of shifts of sustained pressure by both schools, with no shortage of scoring chances. Every time the Raiders looked like they were finally bullying Ralston into submission, the Mustangs came back with a series of flurries that pushed Gartner to his limits.

Finally, with just 1:40 to go in the period, a routine shot from the point from Regis defenseman Spencer Chuck found the stick of Connor Brennan in front of the net, who tipped it just inside the right post for the first goal of the game.

Down 1-0 with a 17-8 shots on goal advantage entering the third, the wind had left the sails for Ralston in the third period. The Raiders’ physical play had taken its toll, and the stifling team defense that had frustrated the Raiders started to break down through the middle of the ice.

Then, with less than eight minutes to play in the game, a prolonged stint in the Regis zone put Gartner under fire, and Ian Snedden of the Mustangs fired in a loose rebound to tie the game 1-1.

“I think the whole thing is staying positive,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Schoepflin said. “We were playing a good hockey game and doing the right things. With this group it’s all about staying with the gameplan and in the third period we finally saw that pay off.”

From there, it was back to the pace of the first period, with both teams trading furious rushes up and down the ice.

Ralston then would tally again with a goal by Tony Salazar with two minutes to go in the game, representing the first breakthrough for the Mustang’s top line. But despite the tilted ice for his top unit, Schoepflin insisted that this thriller was a team effort through and through.

“I thought everyone contributed in their own way in this game,” Shoepflin said. “To make a run in this league, you need everyone to contribute and I’m proud of the way that this team stays together.”

Just as all seemed lost for the Raiders, Jordan fired home the blocker-side shot with 44 seconds remaining to force the game into overtime, where despite trading a few chances, the teams looked as evenly matched as they had all game.

When it was all over, both coaches were proud of their teams, but wary of the progress yet to be made.

“With our success,” Woodley explained, “we have to find a way to keep matching (our opponents’) speed, intensity and work ethic.”

So far, the Raiders have been up to the task, but Ralston Valley certainly made their case on Friday night.

“(Regis) is a very opportunistic team,” Shoepflin explained. “We have to adjust a few things before we play them again but I’m excited to see where we’ll be in the next few weeks.”

  • Photos: No. 1 Regis Jesuit draws No. 3 Ralston Valley

CENTENNIAL — A top-three hockey showdown ended in a 2-2 tie as No. 1 Regis Jesuit faced No. 3 Ralston Valley on Friday.

Regis Jesuit (16-0-1-0, 12-0-1-0 Foothills Conference) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Connor Brennan at the end of the second period.

Ralston Valley (15-1-1-0, 9-2-0-0) came roaring back, with Ian Snedden knotting the game at one and Tony Salazar giving the Mustangs the lead with just two minutes to go.

The Raiders didn’t give up, and Jack Jordan scored the tying goal with 44 seconds to go.

Regis Jesuit goalie Sam Gartner saved 24 of 26 shots, while Ralston Valley goalie Scott Albertoni saved 13 of 15.
