ASPEN — It’d been lingering near his fingertips, just out of reach for the past two seasons. Thursday, he seized it.

Battle Mountain senior Quintin Cook kicked off this season’s state skiing championships with a resounding victory in the boys’ Giant Slalom on a 45-degree day at Aspen Highlands. He was second in the event a season ago to teammate Sands Simonton, and finished fifth as a sophomore.

“It was a really good day — great snow, great weather,” Cook said. “Can’t ask much more than that. We also had a good week of training, so I was feeling confident going in.

“Last year, I was duking it out with my friend Sandy Simonton, who graduated,” Cook added. “It’s fun this year to finally pull it out in the Giant Slalom.”

Cook finished the event with a two-run time of 1:27.7, more than a second ahead of second-place Britt Walton of Steamboat Springs (1:29.3). Cook had the top time in each run, going 46.24 the first time out, and 41.42 the second.

“I put down two solid runs,” Cook said.

Cook may just be the biggest star at this event. He is the defending champion in the Slalom (where he beat Simonton last season), which races on Friday, and is also the reigning winner of the Colorado high school ski league’s Skimeister award, given annually to the top skier in both the alpine and nordic disciplines.

Cook raced from the Giant Slalom to the Nordic Classic event in the afternoon — but his day hit a snag. To start off, the alpine race was delayed, meaning he didn’t have time to inspect his gear for the nordic race, which was especially critical given the unusually high temperatures that call for a different kind of wax.

As a result, he was late to his starting time, but still managed to sprint over to the line and got underway a few moments late. Then, Cook got halfway through the course when his binding broke, and officials sent him back to the starting line for a restart. After it was fixed, Cook restarted — 17 minutes after his initial scramble to make the starting line.

“It was really hard not inspecting. I actually beat it pretty hard on the downhill,” Cook said, motioning to a large scrape on his arm.

He ended up finishing 35th in the Nordic Classic.

“I saw my teammates did pretty well, which helps us with (the state title chase) for the team,” Cook said. “I was hoping to try to help them out today.”

Indeed, Battle Mountain’s Franklin Reilly was seventh in the Classic, Koby Simonton was 21st, and Nick Apps was 28th.

After the first day of competition, including Giant Slalom results, the defending champion Huskies sit in second place with 297.5 points, just behind Aspen’s 312. Steamboat Springs, also in contention for the title, is third with 294 points.

Aspen’s point total was bolstered by a strong showing in the Nordic Classic as the Skiers had three of the top four finishers. Nick Sweeney won the event in 13:49.2, teammate Graham Houtsma was second in 14:35.1, Vail Mountain’s Cameron Wolfe was third (14:50.3), and Aspen’s Jack Sweeney took fourth (14:55.8).

Nick Sweeney also won the same event last season, and was fourth two seasons ago.

The girls’ team race is also being led by Aspen, which has 309 points after the first day. Battle Mountain is second with 287 points, three-time defending champion Summit (286) is third, and fourth-place Evergreen (282) is also close behind.

Steamboat Springs’ MacKenzie Gansamann won the girls Giant Slalom, finishing with a two-run total of 1:32.0. She had the fastest first (42.6) and second (49.4) runs on Thursday.

Evergreen’s Mallorie Miller placed second, going 1:33.3. Vail Mountain’s Whitney Merriman (1:34.0) was third.

Summit’s Ruthie Boyd captured the Nordic Classic race, finishing in 17:01.0. Vail Mountain took the next three placers, with Bridget Donovan (17:25.6) finishing second, Maddie Donovan (17:27.7) placing third, and Annie Blakslee (17:37.0) finishing fourth.

Boyd finished second in the Classic last season, and third in the Skate.

Friday, the alpine skiers will race the Slalom, while the nordic will take on the Skate.

  • Skiing preview: Evergreen, in the metro area, has a unique experience in the sport

[dropcap]E[/dropcap]vergreen High School is 50 miles from Winter Park. It’s an hour and fifteen minute drive to the mountain and the same back “down the hill,” the term the kids and coaches of the ski team use.

The commute is nothing like those of other Colorado high school ski teams, teams like Aspen and Vail, whose schools reside a stone’s throw away from their respective resorts.

There is no bus for practices, just willing parents and dedicated student athletes. Parents travel an average of 2,500 miles a season for four months to make ski dreams possible.

The Evergreen High School ski team is comprised of kids from twelve different schools across the Denver Metro area, with kids traveling from as far south as Colorado Springs. Half are from Evergreen and the other half are split among the eleven other schools. They stack a 72-person team, an even split of girls and boys, and a very uneven split of alpine and cross country. Nearly 60 are alpine athletes. A few are skimeisters.

Powerhouses like Summit, Aspen, and Battle Mountain continue to take the state title year after year. The Summit boys and girls team have 29 championships together. Evergreen has none.

The obstacles they face seem instrumental in this lack of state titles. With no bus and a far commute, on-snow practice time is severely limited. The alpine team sees 12-14 days of practice on the actual slopes, whereas mountain located teams have half days at school and ski almost every afternoon of the season.

But the Cougars don’t let the disadvantaged circumstances affect their effort. Dry land practices at Red Rocks and fitness centers are held four times a week, and with that, what they lack in ski practice they make up for in conditioning and teamwork.

“Our emphasis is on the team first, individual second, which isn’t always the case with skiing since it’s an individual sport. But it’s important for us,” said alpine coach Kirk Petrik. “Because we have kids from many high schools and each racer is new to each other, we don’t have any cliques.”

The Nordic team waits until the evening to ski the beginner slopes of Loveland, or head to Addenbrooke Park in Lakewood when there is snow in town. But the biggest setbacks for the cross country athletes aren’t the location or limited practice spaces.

“People just don’t know we exist. Getting the word out is so tough,” says seventh-year Nordic co-coach Holly Boggs. “But the ones who do know about it embrace it. The families are amazing and so willing to make practices and races happen.”

And despite all the difficulties, hiccups, and inconveniences, the team still churns out top athletes. Senior Owen Tallmadge came in third place in Slalom at the 2015 state championships, behind two Battle Mountain stars Sands Simonton and Quintin Cook.

The boys alpine team came in fourth overall last year, and second in 2014, while the girls alpine team finished in 5th in 2015. The Nordic team, with its size, sees less success than the Alpine Squad, though 2015 graduate Luk Platill placed second in Nordic last season.

The Nordic team competes in their first race in mid-December, while the Alpine team will start in the New Year on Jan. 8.

“The kids just love it,” said both Boggs and Petrik.

For Evergreen, and its metro makeup of skiers, one thing remains the same as its competitors: it’s all for the love of the sport.

  • Summit, Battle Mountain win team skiing championships

KEYSTONE — Friday, the second day of the state skiing championships, was all about tight turns, low-light lenses, and big flakes.

Well, for most of the day. The girls started the sun-less, low temperature morning.

Sophie Defries, a junior at Boulder who races for Nederland, took first place for the slalom. A top-five finisher in Thursday’s giant slalom race, Defries was excited and surprised to take the top spot. She said she loved the course on Thursday, but Friday, it seemed, the course loved her.

Though there were spills towards the bottom, and a late gate that seemed to trip up a portion of the field, Defries stayed on her feet.

“This was a pretty tough course, so it threw some girls off,” she said. “It was quick, and I just had to stay focused. I was a little more prepared today, and slalom is always a stronger race for me.”

Defries’ Cassidy Donahue had the fastest time heading into the second race, but slipped out at the end, bumping Defries into her spot.

“I am bummed that my friend crashed,” she said. “I guess for me, I looked ahead and there was a little bit of luck.”

Eleanor “Ellie” Brown-Wolf finished her senior season with a second place run, her first podium finish, and a happy end to her high school career. Brown-Wolf will take a gap year before college and continue to compete in ski racing. Abby Davidson was third.

Snow had already begun falling at the close of the girls first run, and by the time the boys took the hill for their final run, the winds had picked up and visibility was limited.

It didn’t keep Sands Simonton from doing what he does best: skiing fast.

In his senior year, Simonton knows the podium well. As does his Battle Mountain teammate, Quintin Cook, who finished first in slalom.

The two finished first and second in both alpine events. And collectively, Battle Mountain won its first team alpine championship in 14 years.

“Besides those short 30 seconds to a minute, this is all about the team. I am overjoyed to be part of this,” Simonton said.

Simonton has committed to Colorado, where he will race as a Buff.

Head alpine coach Simon Mar says the dynamic between Cook and Simonton is “really cool to watch and coach.”

The boys of Battle Mountain swept all four events across the board, winning state championships and marking their most successful season in competition history.

In girls Nordic Classic, Summit teammates Ezra Smith and Ruthie Boyd finished back to back.

The two, elated to skate and push so close to each other, both landed on the podium in Thursday’s Nordic Skate, as well. Smith, a freshman, finishes her first high school season with two first-places finishes.

Her elder classmate and friend Boyd, crossed the finish line a minute and 30 second after Smith.

“I’m really excited to share the podium with Ruthie,” said the newtimer, Smith. “It’s been really fun to have each other for training and to go 1 and 2.”

Lyle Shipp of Vail Mountain followed shortly behind for third place. In the boys Nordic Classic, Henry Trowbridge, winner of the Nordic skate event on Thursday, was unable to race Friday due to illness. Nick Sweeney, Luk Platil, and Graham Houtsma took first, second, and third respectively.

The host team, Summit High school, won overall state champions for the girls.

  • Fast courses theme of state skiing championships’ first day

KEYSTONE — On a bluebird day, temperatures in the 40s baked Upper Go Devil, the run in which the giant slalom course was set to kick off two days of skiing state championships.

The field of 71 girls began their turns downhill promptly. It didn’t take long for viewers to notice the snow was firmer than met the eye and the turns were full of pebble-like chops of hard-pack, creating the chattering ski edges of competing high schoolers.

The upper half was mellow, but the second half was a steep pitch that ended with a tough, sharp maneuver around the last gate to reach the finish line. Merely a quarter of the riders had finished before one went careening into the netting at the bottom.

The tournament director and jury eventually decided to move the gate and races resumed.

All previous racers were then given the opportunity to race again, and if they accepted, the second time would be the one to count. Now racing for time to fit all the events in one day and give all competitors an equal chance, racers and spectators alike made adjustments and avoided protest.

When all the hiccups had passed, Aspen sophomore Quincy Dollahan, finished on top with a time of 1:22.1.

Last year was her first year racing, a season in which she placed in the top-10.

“I haven’t been practicing as much as I liked to so I was not expecting this. I’m pretty psyched,” Dollahan said. “I really liked this course, but I’m not so sure many others did. I am just really excited to be here and that helped me win.”

Dollahan heads into the slalom race Friday morning, though she notes her stronger event is the giant slalom.

Gisele Thompson from Summit and Brenna Hattler out of Evergreen followed behind her. Sophie Defries, a junior at Nederland, who placed fourth, agrees with Dollahan’s enjoyment with the course.

“That was a really fun run,” she said. “It was fast and straight, one of those courses where if you mess up you’re done for, which is scary, but there was just this prevalent feeling of fun the whole way down.”

The boys giant slalom ran a little smoother, and very similar to last year.

Spectators remembered teammates Sands Simonton and Quintin Cook of Battle Mountain taking first and second place last season. They didn’t skip a beat.

The two seemingly neck-and-neck classmates raced on Friday in the slalom, a race Simonton topped last year as well. Simonton won in 1:17.3. Cook was second in 1:18.7. Luke Bailey of Platte Canyon followed in third on Thursday.

Due to the morning delay, parents and coaches scrambled to get the Skimeisters — racers who compete in both alpine and nordic events — to the Frisco Adventure Center.

The girls led the Nordic Skate race, followed by the boys.

The Aspen girls squad, a strong contender every year, qualified 10 ladies. Four of those finished in the top 10.

Nina Beidleman was among the exhausted athletes as the sun set and temperatures dropped.

“It hurts the whole race,” said Beidleman, a fourth-place finisher. “But you might as well get a reward from all the pain.”

As with the downhill course, the Nordic one seemed to entertain the racers.

“There were so many downhills and transitions,” Beidleman said. “It was so fun to compete on.”

Summit’s Ezra Smith won the event in 15:22.5. Vail Mountain’s Maddie Donovan (15:40.1) was second.

The boys closed out the packed day, with Summit’s Henry Trowbridge (14:10.4) and Aspen’s Nick Sweeney (14:25.7) finishing first and second.

Cook, the dual discipline competitor who raced his way from downhill to cross-country, showed every bit of tenacity as he crossed his second finish line of the day, with two more to go Friday.

“Everyday we train for both. I’m used to hopping right from one set of gear to the next,” he said. “But it really hurts to do two in one day. And it also feels great.”
