  • Stangebye, Montrose seize the lead at 4A boys state golf tournament

COLORADO SPRINGS — Micah Stangebye’s long birdie putt on No. 18 was quite the exclamation point on his round. He had been good all day but when the ball fell into the cup, the argument could be made that he finished with a great round.

He shot a 3-under-par-69 to grab the individual lead at the Class 4A boys state golf tournament. His teammates also benefited from his 18-hole score as Montrose also came away with the team lead, besting Steamboat Springs by eight shots.

The Indians won the 4A state title last year and knew coming into this year that they were going to get everyone’s best shot.

“You have a target on your back,” coach Dave Woodruff said. “All season long people want to knock the defending champs off. The kids have been there and they’re used to that kind of thing. We’re just telling them to relax and play a round of golf and see what happens.”

That’s the way they approached round one. And it paid off. Stangebye got things rolling off the first tee, making a birdie on the long par-4.

He followed it up with a birdie on No. 2 to quickly move to two-under and feeling like he was able to take advantage of the friendly conditions the Club at Flying Horse had to offer early in the day.

“Going into hole one, I thought par was a good start because it’s not an easy hole,” Stangebye said. “I made birdie and thought that I had an advantage at that point. On birdie two, I realized putts were going in and I felt pretty good.”

The same could be said for Mead’s TJ Shehee. The senior finished 14th in last year’s tournament and felt good about his round at the start of the day. Like Stangebye, he birdied No. 1, but as the day rolled in he struggled on the putting greens.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

“I couldn’t make any putts today and I got a little sloppy on my last two holes,” Shehee said. “Aside from that, it was just a consistently boring day all day.”

That boring day resulted in a 74, leaving him five shots behind Stangebye. There are five other players within five shots of the leader, including Steamboat Springs’ Jack Rotermund who is in a tie for second after shooting 73. Steamboat is also second in the team races, trailing Montrose by eight shots.

Rotermund knows that if he can make up strokes on Stangebye it will also benefit the team. The key to making up those strokes is eliminating unforced errors, such as a shot that went into the hazard on No. 14, which resulted in a double-bogey.

“The unforced for me, blocking it right into the hazard on 14, hurt the team,” Rotermund said. “You can’t hit every shot perfectly, but we just have to limit those mistakes.”

Groups will go off at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning as the second round will complete the state tournament. The key for Stangebye and Woodruff in keeping the lead is to treat Tuesday morning, and Monday night for that matter, is to keep their minds off golf.

An easy way to do that was to get the kids together and enjoy watching some Monday Night Football.

“I think we’ll probably just watch the Broncos and play it as just another round tomorrow,” Woodruff said. “We’ll get some rest and I just want them to have fun and enjoy the time they have out there.”

If they enjoy that time, Woodruff is convinced they’ll play well. As he tries to get the sweep for the individual and team titles, Stangebye isn’t afraid to draw off the energy from his teammates. They might be on the course individually, but he knows they’re all for one and one for all.

“When everyone is playing well it comes to me,” Stangebye said. “When they play well, I play well.”

If they play well on Tuesday, Montrose will have plenty of new hardware to take back to the Western Slope.

  • Kent Denver’s Jackson Klutznick wins 3A boys golf title; Aspen claims team championship

BOULDER — Jackson Klutznick had one big focus during Tuesday’s final round at the Class 3A boys golf state championships.

The Kent Denver senior, who was playing in the lead group and had put himself in position to win the tournament, wanted to have fun. In fact, he didn’t even check the leaderboard until the 16th hole.

By that time, Klutznick was four shots in the lead, well on his way to winning the individual championship.

“I just prepared myself to play golf,” Klutznick said. “In the past, I’ve really gotten in my own way, started thinking about other people and what they’re going to shoot, kinda trying to predict it. I just decided I’m gonna play golf today.

“The kids I was playing with were awesome,” he added. “I’m assumed they were the ones that are leading, so I was just kind of going in relation to them, and just tried to have fun. I figured at the end of the day, just go out and enjoy it.”

    Well, mission accomplished.

Klutznick, who finished fourth a season ago, broke away from a tight leaderboard to win the 3A title by three strokes at 1-under. He becomes the sixth individual champion from Kent Denver.

Aspen’s Jack Hughes (2-over) was second. Peak to Peak’s Davis Long, last season’s champion, finished third at 3-over. Aspen’s Jack Pevny and Prospect Ridge Academy’s Walker Franklin tied for fourth at 4-over.

Hughes, a CU commit, and Pevny led an impressive Aspen contingent which captured the team title, the program’s first. The Skiers, who entered with a one-stroke lead after the first day, had a runaway performance on the second day of the tournament to win.

They were 5-under as a team at one point on Tuesday, and wound up winning by nine strokes, finishing at 14-over. Kent Denver (+23) was second.

“These boys have been outstanding players since the time they were freshmen,” said Aspen coach Mary Woulfe. “They knew this was in their blood, and they just didn’t know when it was going to happen.”

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Dawson Holmes (+8) anchored the team-score for Aspen, and Dominic Lanese IV shot 23-over.

“We were a team of six, not a team of four,” Woulfe. “We had two outstanding players that didn’t make it who would’ve been on that leaderboard. … They’re just smart players, they make good decisions all the way around the course.”

Eaton’s Peter Grossenbacher entered the day with a two-stroke lead, having shot 5-under on the first day. Klutznick entered in second at 3-under, and Pevny was third at 2-under.

The leaderboard tightened up almost immediately on the second day. A double-bogey from Grossenbacher on the second hole, along with a birdie from Pevny and a par from Klutznick, tied the trio at the top.

They spent the rest of the day in various positions of the lead, with Pevny each Klutznick each grabbing the individual lead at one point. By the time the lead group reached the ninth hole, there was a five-way tie atop the top: Pevny, Klutznick, Grossenbacher, Franklin and Telluride’s Carlo Pine all sat at even.

Thru 11 holes, Klutznick and Pevny were tied with Franklin (who had finished 12) at even. Klutznick then birdied his 12th hole to take a one-stroke lead. He held the lead from there on out, as Pevny, Grossenbacher and Franklin dropped strokes.

“I figured I was somewhere at the top, but there are so many great players, I didn’t want to assume,” Klutznick said.

Klutznick added another birdie on 16, and suddenly he led by four strokes. He made par on 17 and bogey on 18 to seal his championship.

“He rose to the occasion,” Woulfe said of Klutznick. “To see him win, and the way he did it, with such grace coming down the stretch, was great.”

BOULDER — On a brisk Monday afternoon at the beautiful Boulder Country Club, Eaton senior Peter Grossenbacher found himself in the lead of the Class 3A boys golf state tournament.

Shooting 5-under on the tournament’s first day, Grossenbacher’s two-shot lead over Kent Denver senior Jackson Klutznick was immensely earned. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Grossenbacher, who bogeyed two of his first three holes, and was 1-over through the front nine.

His back nine score of 29 (6-under) included an eagle on the 12th hole to spark a unbelievable surge.

“Today was a total blast,” Grossenbacher said. “On 12 I took a very aggressive line, hit a pitching wedge close and made eagle. After that eagle, my mom told me I was in the lead.”

The top of the leaderboard is tight. Aspen junior Jack Pevny (2-under) and Telluride senior Carlo Pine (even) find themselves right in the thick of things. Prospect Ridge junior Walker Franklin is in fifth at 1-over.

“It’s very exciting to be in it,” Pevny said. “It just shows you all of your hard work paying off. Definitely have grinded for the last two weeks to get ready for this. I think I need to play the same way I did today, tomorrow. I made some mistakes on the greens, but sticking to the game-plan by hitting the middle of the green is a focus and I’ll just go from there.”

Pevny’s team, Aspen, currently leads the team category of the tournament at 4-over par. Kent Denver follows at 5-over as third place for now is Holy Family at 15-over.

Telluride has just one player at state, but after a consistent afternoon, Pine finds himself with a chance as Day 2 approaches.

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

“It was a pretty solid day,” Pine said. “My wedge game was a little off, but my putting kept things together, so hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to get the wedges a little closer and keep the putting and be under par.”

Pine’s lead held up at 1-under for most of the afternoon until Grossenbacher claimed the lead at 2-under following his eagle.

The leader’s golf partner, Klutznick kept pressure on, especially late in the round. With the two golfers at the top of the leaderboard, Tuesday’s final round is likely to bring more competitiveness between these two, who will be grouped together once again.

“We started feeding off of each other’s birdies and before I knew it, I was 5-under with two to play,” Grossenbacher said. “He also eagled 12, so after we both made those eagles, I told him I might have a skin there. I wasn’t very happy when I saw him make a putt, but it was fun to see the motivation we put on each other. He’s a very awesome sportsman.”

What was well known by all golfers leaving Monday afternoon: there is still another day.

“At the end of the day, whoever plays better tomorrow is what it all comes down to,” Klutznick said. “He (Grossenbacher) played great today, and if he plays like that again, it will be hard to do anything, but I’m going to try and keep it going.”

After accomplishing a tournament round career-low by four shots, Grossenbacher looks to become the first individual from Eaton to win the state boys golf championship, and he’s looking forward to the opportunity.

“It would mean the world to me to pull it out tomorrow,” he said. “I have put just so much preparation into this. Visualizing it even since freshman year when I’m practicing chipping and putting thinking, “I need to get this this down for state,’ so I’ve been waiting for this moment.”

  • Mountain Range’s Jones leads 5A boys golf with marvelous shot and round

    (Brent New/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Mountain Range’s Connor Jones hit an eagle with a 142-yard shot on the third hole at Colorado Springs Country Club. It would have been the shot of a lifetime if not for the fact that he did nearly the same exact thing in his practice round Sunday.

How’s that for some good fortune for the Day 1 leader of the Class 5A boys golf state tournament.

“Same hole, same club,” Jones chuckled. “Holed them both. It’s never going to happen again in my life.”

With his 9-iron, Jones landed his shot about five feet past the pin and watched his ball gently roll back into the cup on consecutive days. Now, he hopes his story of golf folklore can have a fairy-tale ending, too. The senior’s score of 3-under-par 68 is good for the three-stroke lead after the first day of the 5A tournament.

The senior had two birdies to go with his eagle during his round. He remains grounded despite a dazzling open to his state bid.

“Tomorrow, I’m just going to try and play my game,” Jones said.

Lakewood’s Ryan Liao is currently second after shooting even-par. Liberty’s Brandon Bervig and last year’s runner-up, Dillon Stewart of Fossil Ridge, are tied for third at 1-over.

“The goal was to give myself a chance,” said Liao, a sophomore. “I gave myself a chance today to play tomorrow and try to win.”

Liao and fellow-sophomore Noah DiBiase (73) led the Tigers to the top of the leaderboard, six strokes ahead of second-place Arapahoe and Fossil Ridge. Their fast start comes a year after Lakewood did not qualify a team to the tournament.

On Tuesday, the Tigers will look to hold the lead to hoist their first state title in program history with two sophomores and two freshmen leading the way.

“It’s not unexpected, we work hard,” Lakewood coach Alan Gonzales said. “We just love to play golf. We’re a young team but at the same time we’re experienced. They play a lot of tournaments in the summer.”

Jones will also try to hold off the field for his first title. He finished tied for sixth last year.

“I told myself I wasn’t going to look at the leaderboard today,” Jones said. “Obviously I’m going to have to look tomorrow.”

  • 5A Southern Region has three individual medalists as boys golf regionals wrap up

    (@ahswarriorgolf/Twitter)

There were three individual champions out of the Southern Region of Class 5A boys golf on Wednesday after a massive thunderstorm caused the cancellation of a playoff.

Arapahoe’s Jack Tickle and Riley Rottschaefer, and Liberty’s Brandon Bervig all finished their rounds at 1-under. The region was in a lightning delay, and further bad weather forced the decision to not play a playoff. As a result, Tickle, Rottschaefer and Bervig were each named individual medalists.

Arapahoe captured the team championship in the region, finishing at 3-over as a group. Liberty was second at 10-over.

In 4A Region 3, held at the Olde Course in Loveland, TJ Shehee became the first golfer from Mead to win a region championship. Shehee was 1-under. Evergreen’s Nolan Miller placed second at 1-over.

“The course was playing pretty tough because it had punched greens and that made it hard to putt,” Shehee told BoCoPreps.com. “I missed a few short putts but I didn’t get mad and let it ruin my round. I just tried to hit it well all day and give myself opportunities. It means a lot to me to win because I haven’t played well at regionals before.”

Miller’s performance helped lead the Cougars to a win as a team in the region. They were 17-over. Northridge was second at 22-over.

Dillon Stewart stole the show on the second day of boys golf regionals around the state on Tuesday.

The Fossil Ridge senior, who finished second at the Class 5A state state championship last season, shot a 9-under 63 to win the Class 5A Northern Regional, held at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora.

In the loaded 3A Region 2, Holy Family’s Jacob Mason won the event by finishing at 4-under, two strokes ahead of defending 3A champion Davis Long of Peak to Peak.

“When you are trying to qualify for something as big as the state championship, its always in the back of your mind that you could be close to the cutline,” Mason told HFAthletics.com. “There is always that chance of putting more pressure on yourself, but I like the pressure and I think our team lived up to it today.”

Prospect Ridge Academy’s Walker Franklin, last year’s runner-up, finished in a tie for third with Kent Denver’s Jackson Klutznick at 1-under. Klutznick finished in a tie for fourth at state last season.

Kent Denver, last year’s runner-up as a team, won the event. Holy Family placed second. Peak to Peak, the defending champions who beat Kent in a playoff last season, was third.
