Coronado junior Isaac Petersilie has started to hear from colleges. It started with Colorado colleges and he’s got feelers out to some out-of-state ones as well.

But don’t get ahead of the present, Petersilie insists.

It’s not how the reigning Class 4A boys golf champion got here. It’s what he’s focused his game on since he won the state tournament at Hiwan Golf Club with a 4-over, two-day total of 144.

“Last year I was trying to play best I could,” Petersilie said. “This year, mainly I’ve been focusing on each shot at a time.”

That’s included revamping his pre-shot routine and a renewed focus on his wedge play.

As he’s started to fill into his body, Petersilie has seen his approach shots become shorter.

The emphasis on the short game has made him better, but he again points to the mental aspect as his strongest part.

“I’m trying to take all the variables taken out of it. Then just hit the shot,” he said. “I’m taking out the guesswork — the distance, the slope,  what I want to do with the shot, how it will come out of a lie. Everything that can change the shot.”

Last year Petersilie showed that mental game.

Petersilie said he thought around even par would win the thing. Where others in contention blew up, Petersilie never had worse than a bogey in the 36-hole championship.

He finished one shot ahead of Cheyenne Mountain’s Wilson Belk. The two each went into No. 18 tied. Petersilie admits he thought he had to make a par to send it to a playoff. He didn’t realize Belk’s bogey on 18 had given him the win.

Thinking he needed a par to send it to a playoffs helped “focusing a little bit and helped me not get ahead of myself,” Petersilie said.

The junior, however, will have a loaded 4A field to compete with.

Belk returns as do Valor Christian all-staters Jake Staiano  and Valor Christian’s Ross Macdonald; Montezuma-Cortez’s Jakob Rudosky; and Silver Creek’s Jackson Solem.

“There are a lot of great kids returning,” Petersilie said. “That’s definitely a good thing.”

Although Petersilie wants to be in the now, and said he’s focusing on consistently doing well each tournament, he does think about that state championship in September.

“I mean, I would say (winning state) would be one of my goals,” he said.

    The 2014-15 season is here.

Boys golf opened fall practice on Monday, giving an official start to the school year. It is the only sport allowed to practice this early — each of the 10 other fall sports will begin their practice next Monday.

“It’s always a fun time of year,” CHSAA commissioner Paul Angelico said. “We’re looking forward to what this season will bring.”

Boys golf can begin scrimmages and meets on Thursday. Regionals will be completed by Sept. 19, and the state meets are Sept. 29-30.

Official dates for all sports are available in the 2014-15 sports calendar.

Regis Jesuit is the defending Class 5A champion, while Valor Christian won 4A last year, and Dawson School won 3A.

This year’s state tournament sites are set. 5A will be at Colorado Springs Country Club, 4A is set for Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, while 3A will be held at Northeastern 18 Golf Course in Sterling.

Regis Jesuit’s boys golf team comes into the 2014 season in a familiar and comfortable position — as defending state champions, a title they’ve captured for four consecutive seasons.

That type of consistency is considered rare in high school sports, where student-athletes come and go so quickly.

The turnover presents a unique challenge this year for head coach Craig Rogers, who had an excellent returning squad in 2013 to lean on. Now, four golfers from last year’s state championship squad are playing golf at Division I colleges, which means the Raiders will be forced to reload if they want to repeat.

“It’ll be fun, because it’s very wide open. Going into last year, we really had three guys who were exceptional golfers. There wasn’t a lot of mystery who our best players would be,” Rogers said.  “This year there’s a lot of good young players who have the opportunity to step up.”

If past accomplishments are any indication, the Raiders possess the perfect road map for remaining on top. According to Rogers, the key to sustaining success is developing his players as young men first, and as golfers second.

“The mission of our team is the same as in school — to become better people and develop character. I’ve already been in conversation with (our captains) about how they really want to focus on making sure we have a bond as a team,” Rogers said. “The older guys look after the younger guys and they take care of each other and develop as gentlemen.”

Despite graduating a number of excellent players, including last year’s individual champion Spencer Painton, Regis Jesuit will hardly be devoid of experience going into the season.

Senior Jack Lazzeri, one of the team’s three captains, returns after placing in a tie for 26th in last fall’s state meet. And Rogers, who has a long history of defending championships to point to as proof, knows where character and consistency comes from — it’s passed down from one class to the next.

“What we’ve done really, really, well is just get kids who are enthusiastic, good character kids, who kind of fall in love with the game,” Rogers said. “They see the older kids that are having a lot of success, how they carry themselves, and how they work at it. And they kind of see themselves being that guy someday.

“If we do a really good job with character first, golf will follow.”

  • Boys golf state roundup: Regis Jesuit wins fourth-consecutive 5A crown

AURORA — The wind couldn’t stop Regis Jesuit from running away with this thing.

Despite gusts up to 20 mph, the Raiders captured their fourth-consecutive Class 5A championship in boys golf on Tuesday afternoon. Regis Jesuit finished at 7-under after the two-day tournament — second-place Ralston Valley was 16-over for an astounding 23-stroke gap.

“Most of that (gap came) during the first nine” on Tuesday, Regis coach Craig Rogers said afterward. “They really came really ready to play. They were in a good space mentally, physically and emotionally. They’ve been working hard. They were ready to go.”

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Raiders’ senior Spencer Painton paced his teammates, and the field, in capturing the individual title. He finished 6-under.

“Those conditions were very difficult,” Painton said, “and I was very happy to be able to contribute a large part to the team.”

Painton, a University of Kansas recruit, entered the day with a one-shot lead over Legacy’s Li Chen, but lost it after a bogey on the first hole. The two were tied for much of the front nine until Painton birded the seventh. He picked up two more strokes when he birded No. 8 and Chen bogeyed it. Even so, Painton didn’t let a sense of relief creep in.

“We still had ten holes left to play, we had the back nine,” he said. “Especially with conditions like this, you just have to keep the head down and keep going because you never know what can happen.”

As it turned out, though, the lead was Painton’s for good after that. He had a two-stroke lead as he walked up to the 18th green, but his mind didn’t wander.

“To be quite honest, I had a not-so-easy putt left, I was still trying to finish,” said Painton, who finished second last season. “I just had to make sure that it was not over until the score cards were signed and officially turned in before I could start celebrating.”

Chen finished in a tie for second with Regis Jesuit’s Jake Kelley. In all, the Raiders had three medalists, including Chris Korte, who finished in a tie for seventh.

Cherry Creek was third in the team competition at 18-over, Legacy (23-over) was fourth, while Heritage and Fairview tied for fifth at 24-over. (Find complete results here.)

EVERGREEN — Valor Christian was finally able to capture that elusive boys golf championship. The Eagles, who finished runner-up a year ago following a playoff, were 33-over as a team to beat out second-place Silver Creek (36-over).

Valor was led by Jake Staiano’s 8-over performance.

Individually, Coronado’s Isaac Petersilie stood on top of a tight leaderboard at the end of the tournament at 4-over. He beat out Cheyenne Mountain’s Wilson Belk (5-over), as well as Pueblo West’s Glenn Workman (7-over) and Staiano. (Complete results.)

“It was really my putting. Every save I needed to make pretty much went in,” Petersilie said afterward. “That felt great. It, early-on, was a confidence booster.

“I was a little nervous coming in, but I’m really excited and really happy.”

PUEBLO — Alexander Dawson had three finishers place in the top-7 as the Mustangs ran away with the 3A title.

Leading the way was Cole Folwell, who finished third at 4-over, and Cameron Connor (fourth, 5-over).

Basalt’s Tristan Rohrbaugh won the individual championship after shooting 1-under for the tournament.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Rohrbaugh said afterward. “I can’t stop smiling.”

“I really didn’t know until the 13th who was leading or where anyone stood,” he added. “I really didn’t want to know, but when I overhead some people talking and I asked my coach (Al Rakowski). He told me I was three up. I felt a little better, less pressure.”

Peak to Peak’s Behrod Keshtavar finished second at 3-over. (Complete results.)

  • Spencer Painton, Regis Jesuit lead after first round of 5A golf

AURORA — Spencer Painton ended the first nine holes by shooting a 37, or 1-over par. After 18, though, he was on top of the leaderboard.

Painton, a senior from Regis Jesuit, shot a 6-under 66 to lead the field at the Class 5A boys golf state championships, which teed-off Monday at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora.

“I got some nerves out of the way at the start of the day,” said Painton.  “I felt like I hit a lot of good putts, but just couldn’t find the hole on the front.”

Legacy’s Li Chen is in second following a 5-under 65, while Keegan Sheard from Ralston Valley sits in third at 2-under 70. (Full results)

Painton took over the second half of the course by shooting a 29.  He recorded birdies on his last six holes.

Painton said that he felt the last hole was his best. On 18, Painton hit a 330-to-340 yard drive, hit an approach about 10 feet from the hole, and then sealed the lead with a clutch putt to finish the day.

“My putter and long swing were doing really well on the front — and then the putt started heating up on the back,” Painton said.

Last season, Painton finished just one stroke behind state champion Kyler Dunkle of Douglas County. He and Chen tied for second.

So far in this year’s championship, Dunkle is tied for seventh with six other players at 1-over 73.

Painton comes into the state tournament as the 5A boys golf Central regional qualifying  champion.  He won the qualifier, which was also played at Murphy Creek, by finishing at 4-under 66.  Chen also played in the qualifier, but finished tied for 13th at 7-over 77.

Regis leads all teams at 4-under.  Ralston Valley is nine strokes behind Regis, enough for second place.  Cherry Creek and Legacy are tied for third at 6-over.

“We gained momentum after starting the game behind the lead by seven shots,” said Regis Jesuit coach Craig Rogers. “It was a pretty awesome example of the perseverance we have as a team.”

Jake Kelley and Chris Korte of Regis both had a good day, shooting 1-under and 3-over, respectively. Last year, Korte finished tied for sixth, shooting 8-over.

Rogers has a strong game plan for the second round.

“We need to maintain a lot of confidence,” Rogers said.  “We can’t coast by any means, there are a lot of good teams out there. We need to play a little bit aggressive — and pick our moments.”

Rogers’ team has won state championships the past three years.  Last year’s squad won the title with a 20-over 446, eight strokes ahead of Ralston Valley.

In 4A, at the Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen,  Andrew Rademacher-Howe of Silver Creek leads the field at one-under 69.  Glenn Workman, from Pueblo West, and Isaac Petersillie of Coronado are tied for second at even-par 70.

Silver Creek currently leads all teams in 4A with 13-over. Valor Christian holds second at 18-over and Cheyenne Mountain sits in third at 20-over.

On 3A’s day one at Pueblo Country Club, Alexander Dawson teammates Cameron Connor and Cole Folwell are tied for first in at 2-under 69.  Tristan Rohrbaugh from Basalt will go into the second round at even-par 71.

Alexander Dawson has a commanding lead in 3A — they’re 22 strokes ahead of second-place Kent Denver, which finished at 22-over 235.  Kent has won the past seven championships.

The second round of each state championship will begin tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.  Medals will be awarded following each of the rounds where a state championship will be crowned.
