  • 5A boys golf: First day of state tourney ends with a tight leaderboard

    (Brad Cochi/For CHSAANow.com)

DENVER – Monday’s opening round of the Class 5A boys golf state championships at Pinehurst Country Club left a lot to be decided by Tuesday’s finale.

At the end of Day 1, an unusual 10 players from eight different schools sat within three strokes of the lead, which currently belongs to Fossil Ridge’s Gavin Hagstrom. Three of those players are two strokes back, and four are right on Hagstrom’s trail just one stroke behind the Sabercats senior.

On a tough course where putting is everything, Tuesday’s final round could be defined by more leaderboard shuffling than any other state tournament in recent memory.

“I feel like I played pretty solid,” Hagstrom said. “You can never really wish for a bigger lead so I’m just happy to be the leader right now because it’s still really close and there’s a lot more golf to play.”

Hagstrom, who spent last school year at the Junior Players Golf Academy, finished with an even-par 70 on Monday. His low score of the day kept the Fossil Ridge Sabercats in contention to repeat as team champions, four strokes behind Front Range League rival Fairview entering Day 2.

With a pack of contenders seeking the individual title, Fairview’s Ryder Heuston, who placed seventh in 2018, and Brett Reamon both sit in a tie for second place with matching 1-over 71’s. Also included in the one-stroke chase group are Arapahoe’s Will Kates and Highlands Ranch’s Tarek Salem, who was sixth last season.

“I was nervous for the first few holes but once the nerves went away I just started playing a normal round of golf,” Salem said. “The greens are really tough out here so it’s a putting contest. That’s what it comes down to. It’s nowhere near done. There’s a ton of people still in it and the last few greens are really difficult so tomorrow should be really interesting.”

At two strokes back, Fossil Ridge’s Owen Cornmesser led for much of the day and was as low as 2-under before picking up four strokes on his final three holes. Tied with Cornmesser are Fairview’s Will Chadwick and Lakewood’s Ryan Liao, who placed fourth in 2018.

“This course is tough,” Heuston said. “I hit 15 greens, which is right around my average, but I struggled on the greens a little bit. I can’t really say I hit any bad shots today so hopefully a few more putts go in tomorrow.”

  • 4A boys golf: Stangebye goes low as Montrose hunts for third straight title

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

MONTROSE — There’s no place like home. That was certainly the case for Micah Stangebye and the rest of the Montrose boys golf team after the first day of the Class 4A boys state golf tournament.

Stangebye, the winner of last year’s state tournament, didn’t card a bogey on his day and shot a 4-under-par 67 to take a three-stroke lead over Discovery Canyon’s Kaden Ford and Northfield’s Hunter Swanson.

Stangebye’s steady approach had him even after six holes before he found his first birdie on the 170-yard par 3 seventh.

He ramped things up after making the turn, making back to back birdies on 10 and 11 to move to 3-under.

“I was hitting the ball really well, hitting the down the middle and then I’d hit the greens and it just came down to either making the putt,” Stangebye said. On the back nine I made a couple of more birdies.”

Stangebye’s round set the tone for Montrose, but he got help from fellow senior Ryan Lords who shot a 73. That’s good enough to sit at a tie for fifth place individually but overall it was a big boost in the team race.

Montrose finished the day just 4-over as a team and will have a chance on Tuesday to claim a third consecutive team title. It helps that they’ll have a chance to do it the The Bridges, which serves as the team’s home course.

“The kids played really well today. Knowing the course is an advantage for us,” coach Dave Woodruff said. “I think tomorrow, especially for our seniors, let’s just play like we did today and stay relaxed and both seniors just went out and just played phenomenal golf. I’m really happy for them.”

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Pueblo West sits in second place in the team race at 18-over. Freshman Noah Wagner and junior Toby Salinas each shot 76 to put the Cyclones in a position to go home with some hardware. But like Montrose and its bid for another championship play, West will have to see similar – preferably better – numbers on Tuesday.

Ford made the turn at 1-over before making consecutive birdies at 14 and 15. He made par on the last three holes to finish a round of 70.

Swanson, however, took a bit of a different route to his 70. He was sitting at 2-under heading into his 18th hole but finished on a bogey. He had eagled the hole in his Sunday practice round so it was a little discouraging, but overall wasn’t upset with his day.

“I’m pretty happy with my round,” Swanson said. “I made a couple bad decisions that led to a few bogeys but can’t be mad with it. And it was a nice little 1-under round for the first round.”

He’ll have some work to do if he’s going to catch Stangebye. The Montrose senior has course knowledge on his side and a good mental approach to his game. That was evident on the par-5 10th when facing a downhill, right to left putt for eagle.

His goal wasn’t necessarily to make it, but rather to get it close enough for an easy birdie, which he did. It was that hole that started his accumulation of red numbers on the back nine.

“On that putt speed was the most important thing,” Stangebye said. “You can’t blow it by or leave it well short. I had a pretty good putt that just rolled four or five feet past the hole and then made it coming back.”

That same approach will go a long way in his winning a state title on Tuesday. But it can’t just be mental. He has to execute the shots as well, which is something he has shown time and time again that he is more than capable of doing.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Arapahoe’s Matthew Wilkinson likes golfing in Colorado Springs. The sophomore had himself a day on Monday at the Colorado Springs Country Club where he shot a 4-under-par 67 to win the Class 5A Southern Regional golf tournament.

He didn’t get a fast start as he bogeyed the third hole of the day, but got on track with a birdie on No. 4, a 199-yard par 3.

He went out in 34 and turned it on once he got on the back nine. He made birdies on 11, 15 and 16 to claim the win over Regis Jesuit’s Bo Wardynski by three strokes at a course that Wilkinson saw as good prep for the 5A tournament which will be at Pinehurst.

“It’s a similar to the state course,” he said. “It’s tree-lined, tough greens, fast greens and firm fairways.”

The Warriors also got top-five finishes from Will Kates and Max Zadvorny to take home the team title. Arapahoe and Regis Jesuit were the top two teams in the tournament, earning automatic bids to state.

As for Wilkinson, he’s hoping that he he can take what he did at regionals to state in two weeks.

“I was in a groove,” he said.

Golden’s Chankrit Sundurapura kept himself under par for most of the day but struggled on the par 4 16th hole at the Country Club of Colorado. The 16th was his final hole of the day and the tricky pin placement led to a three-putt, ending his day with a 1-over-par 72 to take medalist honors.

Site host Cheyenne Mountain had three players in the top-seven to take the team title. Ponderosa shot 28-over as a team to also qualify for the 4A tournament at The Bridges Country Club in Montrose.

BROOMFIELD — The Class 5A and 4A Jeffco League individual medalist champions — Lakewood sophomore Max Lange and Evergreen senior Clayton Whitton — capped off conference play in style Tuesday at The Broadlands Golf Course.

Lange birdied two of his final three holes to shoot a round of 2-under, 70. He edged Columbine junior Drew Duffy by a stroke to give Lange his third league title during the six-tournament conference schedule.

The sophomore finished with a 68.6 18-hole stroke average on his top-5 rounds that were counted in the overall conference standings.

“Last year I didn’t have the best scores, but this year I was pretty consistent in the high-60s and low-70s,” Lange said. “To play this well this year means a lot to me.”

Last year’s 5A Jeffco League champ Lakewood junior Ryan Liao placed fourth in the overall standings. Ralston Valley’s tandem of junior Jack Larson and Gage Messingham placed second and third, respectively.

“I’m just much more confident right now,” Lange said of not making first-team all-conference last year as a freshman to winning the medalist title. “I played really well during the summer at tournaments. Coming into the high school season that really helped.”

The Tigers now eye the 5A Central Regional tournament Monday, Sept. 23, at South Suburban Golf Course in Centennial. The 5A state tournament is scheduled for Oct. 7 and 8 at Pinehurst Country Club in Denver.

“We are pretty confident as a team right now,” Lange said of heading to regionals next week. “No matter where we go we are looking to get the team to state and play really well at state.”

Valor Christian won one of the closest 5A Jeffco team races in resent history. The Eagles, Ralston Valley and Lakewood were separated by just seven strokes in the finals standings. Ralston Valley took second and will take its deep squad to the 5A Southern Regional tournament Monday at Colorado Springs Country Club.

Valor will be at the 5A Western Regional at Hyland Hills on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

One the 4A side, Golden mounted a comeback to win the 4A team title. The Demons — led by Chance Surdurapura and Grayson Flambures — took a six-stroke victory over Evergreen in the overall conference standings.

“It means a lot, but I really wanted to win the team title too,” Whitton said after it was clear that Golden would edge out the Cougars for the 4A Jeffco team title. “That was in my head the last couple of holes. Going bogey-bogey wasn’t what I was looking to do.”

Despite the rough finish to his round, Whitton shot a 1-over, 73 to win his third conference tournament of the season and claim his first 4A Jeffco medalist title. Last season, Whitton finished second to teammate Nolan Miller.

Whitton has plenty of regional and state experience as he makes his final run. He was the No. 4 golfer for the Cougars when Evergreen was the 4A team runner-up at state in 2017.

“I feel like if everything comes together I have the ability to go super low,” Whitton said. “I’m going to try to go as low as I can to help the team out to give those young kids the experience of going to state because it’s fun.”

Evergreen juniors Jack Mitchell, Jake Dekoker, Jackson Green and Tanner Erlander all were first or second all-conference selections.

“Right now our goal as a team is to make state as a team. I need to play real well at regionals,” Whitton said. “There is some stuff I need to do and work on. Hopefully at regionals we can all play well.”

The majority of the 4A Jeffco teams will all head to the Region 2 tournament at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs on Monday, Sept. 23.

  • Peak to Peak’s Davis Long in search of another boys golf title

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Peak to Peak’s Davis Long has a little something to prove. The senior is almost two years removed from winning the Class 3A boys golf state championship and has every intention of taking medalist honors next month when the state tournament is played at the Eisenhower Golf Course at the United States Air Force Academy.

He has every intention of doing that because he couldn’t repeat his championship performance last year as a junior. He finished 3-over, four strokes off 2018 champion Jackson Klutznick of Kent Denver, to take third place.

At the time, it was a tough loss to take especially since he had played so well as an underclassman for the Pumas.

“In 2017, it was a one-day tournament which I was able to win,” Long said at fall sports media day. “In terms of preparation, I know after winning in 2017 I put a lot of pressure on myself and had to do well in other tournaments.”

He’s taking that approach to heart this season. On Monday he shot a 3-under-par 69 to win the Metro League tournament at Lone Tree Golf Club. His worst round of the year is a 77 at South Suburban where he notched a seventh-place finish.

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

His consistency all season is one of the primary reasons he’s considered one of the favorites to come away with gold at Eisenhower. And it all started with a mentality that he developed heading into last year, a year in which a state title eluded him.

“I went into 2018 more laid back and knowing what’s going to happen is going to happen,” Long said. “The more you force it, the more difficult it gets.”

Such is the case with golf. The numbers he comes away with after each round are enough to make a weekend adult hacker give up in frustration and list his clubs on Craigslist. He’s gone for 69, 72, 73, 74 (twice), 75 and 77.

He sits third in the iWanamker.com 3A rankings and both of the golfers ahead of him have numbers more impressive. Prospect Ridge’s Walker Franklin has broken 70 three times and has shot no worse than 72. Early in the season Holy Family’s Jacob Mason went for 68 twice and established himself as a championship contender.

But the thing that Long has that neither Franklin or Mason do is the experience of winning on the biggest high school stage of the year.

And with regionals looming next week, Long’s journey at winning a second career title begins right about now. His mentality on the course is more mature than it was two years ago and that’s something that makes this fall all the more intriguing for him and his teammates at Peak to Peak.

Above all else, Long knows that in order to seize another championship he needs to let the game come to him and not get discouraged when the ball takes a wrong turn or a bad bounce, which it always does at times.

“The more you realize you just need to take the good breaks and forget the bad ones, the better it’s going to get,” Long said.

It’s a lesson that any Sunday afternoon hacker knows all too well.
