  • 5A girls golf: Logjam of leaders handle tough course on first day

GOLDEN — The challenging nature of The Club at Rolling Hills means that there aren’t going to be many low scores during this week’s Class 5A girls golf championships.

But there sure is a heck of a lot of competition at the top.

A group of six girls sit near the top of the leaderboard, with Rock Canyon’s Amelia Lee heading the field with a 3-over 75. Her round included three birdies, but also four bogeys and a double-bogey.

“I’m just glad I got through it,” said Lee, who finished tied for 17th last season. “I’m just taking every par for granted. It was definitely pretty challenging, but it was a lot of fun, too.”

The course, tucked into the foothills, is aptly named — because there are plenty of rolling hills. Including the greens.

Denver East’s Julia Baroth played with Lee in the first round, and finished the day tied in second with a 4-over 76. She finished tied for ninth last season.

“It was extremely difficult,” she said of the course. “The greens were rolling. It’s super hilly, so the putt could look like it went to the right, but it went to the left.

“They were tough conditions,” she continued. “Scores are not going to be too low, I think, but anything can happen on this course.”

Likewise, Baroth had her share of birdies (two) and bogeys (six).

“I left a lot of strokes out on the course that I was not too happy about,” she said, “but my coach always tells me that it’s a marathon, and to just take it one shot at a time, one hole at a time, and every hole is a new tournament, and to just keep a good attitude about it. That’s what I did, and it paid off.”

Just after that group finished, Cherry Creek’s Payton Canon put the final touches on her stellar round, also finishing in second at 4-over.

Rampart’s Arielle Keating (5-over) is fourth, while Monarch’s Carly Gallant and Grandview’s Amy Chitkoksoong are tied for fifth at 6-over. Chitkoksoong was runner-up last season.

The team race, too, is a tight one.

Rock Canyon leads at 24-over, and four teams are within 16 shots.

Those are: Ralston Valley (+29), Arvada West (+34), Cherry Creek (+39), and Fossil Ridge (+40).

Grandview, the defending champion, ended the first day in a tie for seventh at 44-over. Denver East is sixth at 43-over.

The second round will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The lead groups will begin their rounds at 10:18 and 10:27 a.m.

Pairings have been updated on the leaderboard.

  • Holley and Prey plan to “Aim High” at 4A state golf tournament

Evergreen senior Natalie Holley, 4-time state qualifier, has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

ARVADA — Two of the top girl golfers in Jeffco will play in their final state tournament May 22 and 23 at Colorado National Golf Course in Erie before heading in different directions.

Class 4A Jeffco League medalist champion and 4-time state qualifier Sydney Prey is planning on playing on the women’s basketball and golf teams at Colorado Mesa University after she graduates from Golden High School. While Evergreen senior Natalie Holley leaves June 28 for Colorado Springs where she has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy.

“That’s sad,” Prey said after maybe playing a final competitive round with Holley on May 11 at the Class 4A Region 3 tournament at Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada. “We’ve probably been paired together for every tournament over the past two years. It’s crazy how fast time flies by.”

Prey finished tied for 2nd in the regional with a round of 83 to qualify for her second straight 4A state tournament. The senior played in the 5A state tournament as a freshman and sophomore when she was at Ralston Valley High School.

Holley placed 7th in the regional with a 87. While the future cadet knows she could have played better in the wet conditions, her focus was on what the Cougars accomplished as a team. Teammates Brianna Bond (92) and Madeline Gatt (101) shot low enough to join Holley at state.

Natalie Holley hopes her putter heats up at Colorado National Golf Course for the 4A state tournament. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“I’m really excited because our team is going this year, which is a first in my four years,” said Holley, who tied for 26th last year at state.

It was fitting that Holley had her final regional tournament at Indian Tree. As a freshman she was able to par her final hole to make the state field.

Holley’s next step in life took time to evolve. She began the application process of going into the military nearly a year-and-a-half ago. Last summer Holley went on camps for those interested in the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Air Force Academy.

“I’m very excited. It was a tough decision. I knew that service was my path that I wanted to go,” said Holley, who also had a full-ride offer to the University of San Diego through the NORTC (Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps). “The Air Force offered so many great opportunities. I knew I wanted to serve in the military.”

Colorado congressman Jared Polis nominated Holley to both the Naval and Air Force academies. One disappointment for Holley is the Air Force doesn’t have a women’s golf team. They do have a club women’s golf team that she plans to get involved with.

“I know it’s going to be tough, but I know it’s going to make me a better person and stronger,” Holley said of joining the military.

Prey recently committed to Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction where she will continue to be a multi-sport athlete.

“I’m going to try it out the first year and see how it goes,” said Prey of playing basketball and golfing. “If it’s too hard they are totally OK with me picking one over the other. We’ll see how it goes.”

Before heading to Grand Junction, Prey well aim to improve on her top-10 finish at the state tournament last year. She finished tied for 7th last year at Pueblo Country Club.

“My goal is to win it for sure, but the way I’ve been swinging it and playing my main goal is a top-3 finish,” Prey said. “If I can win it, I want to win it.”

Heading to state with Sydney will be her two younger sisters. Junior Makena Prey and freshman Haley Prey will join their older sister for one final prep event. The three were all starters on Golden’s girls basketball team that won the 4A Jeffco League title for the first time since 2008 and helped the Demons win the 4A Jeffco League girls golf team title this spring.

Sydney Prey will be joined by her younger sisters — Makena and Haley — at the Class 4A girls golf state tournament May 22 and 23. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)
  • Ralston Valley girls golf primed to take aim at first state title

Ralston Valley senior Jordan Remley rolls in a birdie putt Monday. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

LAKEWOOD — Ralston Valley senior Jordan Remley had the perfect bookends to her Class 5A Western Regional girls golf medalist title Monday at Fox Hollow Golf Course.

Remley birdied the opening par 4 on the Links course. She closed out her round sinking another birdie on the par 4 closing hole on the Meadows course. The senior and now 4-time 5A state qualifier fired a round of 2-over-par 74 to win by three strokes over Rock Canyon’s Amelia Lee.

The only thing missing, no fist pumps after either birdie.

“If I get too excited the next hole won’t go too well,” Remley said with a laugh and smile about not getting too emotional on the course. “Then I’ll just overthink it and jinx myself. You have to focus on the next shot, not the one that just happened.”

Remley, who has signed to continue her golf career at the University of Wyoming, has always focused on that next shot. She made the leap from finishing tied for 47th at the 5A state tournament her sophomore year to placing fifth last season.

After winning the 5A Jeffco League and regional medalist crowns, Remley will be one of the favorites to win the individual state title at the 2-day state tournament May 22 and 23 at The Club at Rolling Hills in Golden.

“She (Remley) is a very strong girl. I think she’ll be prepared for that,” Ralston Valley coach Wendy Davies said of Remley dealing with being one of the favorites. “I think she will have a great tournament.”

Remley is first focused on helping lead Ralston Valley get in contention to win the school’s first girls or boys team golf state championship. The Mustangs placed fourth last season and have all four returning players back — Remley, senior Riley McKibbon, along with sophomores Sydney Eye and Lexi Mueldener.

The four cruised to the regional team title at Fox Hollow on Monday. Mueldener shot an 82. Eye and McKibbon fired rounds of 85 to defeat Rock Canyon by seven strokes.

“I’m hoping our team show up at state this year and actually makes a run at it,” Remley said. “I feel like I’m the one leading. I can’t show the fear. I can’t say I have the butterflies. I want my teammates to feel confident.”

The Mustangs should feel comfortable playing at Rolling Hills. The four play the course a lot. McKibbon and Mueldener are actually members of the private club.

“You do know it so well, but you can also put a lot of pressure on yourself to play well on your home course,” said McKibbon, who has played this spring despite back issues. “It will be exciting. It will be fun playing competitively there.”

Ralston Valley’s Lexi Mueldener eyes her drive Monday during the 5A Western Regional tournament. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

McKibbon added that winning Ralston Valley’s first golf title is something the four has talked about for a long time.

“It would be great,” said Davies, who coached Ralston Valley’s softball team to 4A state titles in 2002 and 2007. “The girls have worked so hard and they are truly a team. I think sometimes in golf you don’t think of it as a team sport. They work hard together.”

The key for the Mustangs is to get off to a good start Day 1 at state.

“The first day you have to put yourself in position to win it,” Remley said. “Individually, it can be one hole that can take you out of it. Putting can really destroy you at Rolling Hills.”

The regional tournament at Fox Hollow didn’t completely get completed Monday. Bear Creek’s Anna Branscome and Heritage’s Hattie Poole both shot round of 96 and began a playoff for the final spot in the state tournament. Rain, lightning and hail rolled before the playoff could be completed.

The playoff will be completed sometime later this week.

  • Elly Carlson’s career day helps Pine Creek girls golf win at Regionals

COLORADO SPRINGS — Elly Carlson didn’t quite need a career day for Pine Creek to come away the big winner at the Class 4A Region 1 girls golf tournament at the Country Club of Colorado.

But she went and had one anyway.

The Eagles senior sank par putts on the 17th and 18th holes to finish with a par 71 on Monday. It paced Pine Creek, who finished with a 260 as a team, good enough for a win. All four Pine Creek golfers will head to state in two weeks.

And Carlson was rewarded twice over as she grabbed the individual win, setting a career best with that 71.

“I don’t think there was a specific point (where a career record was in play), I just knew I was consistently all the way through,” Carlson said. “When I was even through nine, I knew I was kind of on a roll.”

She actually started a little shaky, opening her round with a bogey on No. 1. She rebounded with a birdie on the fourth and then went on a run of pars, sinking eight in a row.

She sank a birdie on No. 12 to briefly move to 1-under. She gave that stroke back and then regained it over the next two holes. She drove through the fairway on 16 setting up a couple of rough shots — including one from the bunker — that led to a bogey. With two remaining, she made back-to-back, never letting her nerves get the better of her.

“I never get nervous,” she said. “It’s all in the athleticism and I’m just playing the course. I’m not playing the players I’m with.”

Taylor Heisler and Elizabeth Pendleton added to the winning score, shooting a 92 and a 97, respectively, to bring home gold for the Eagles. With state two weeks away at Colorado National in Erie, it was the kind of momentum that coach Shane Brown wanted his girls to seize.

“We’ve at Taylor at 88 this year, we’ve had Allison (Palmer) at 88 this year and Elizabeth at 85,” he said. “With this 71, we can achieve really anything. And we did. We set a goal to win regionals and take four to state. We’ve never taken four to state ever in girls golf.”

Cheyenne Mountain grabbed second place as a team, meaning that the Indians will also send four girls to state.

It has been a different feel from year’s past where they were heading into the state tournament with expectations of winning. Coach John Carricato knew that a lot of work from all four girls was going to be necessary if the entire team was going to make the trip. But what he saw out of that was his team bond together in way they hadn’t in previous years.

“It has been great leadership,” Carricato said. “Casey Fetters is phenomenal. She’s a great player, but just as good a leader. She got these four together and they play for each other.”

Fetters finished with a 81, good for third place individually. Her teammate, Maxine Choi, came in with a 78. And she echoed the mentality that this year, these girls are in it for each other and that they worked to score better as one team rather than three or four individuals.

“We pushed our teammates more,” Choi said. “During the season, it’s been different. We all practiced differently.”

The 4A state girls golf tournament begins May 22 at Colorado National.

COLORADO SPRINGS — A weekend snow storm may have disrupted recreational golfers in Colorado Springs, but Kellsey Sample didn’t lose a step.

The Palmer Ridge senior shot a 3-over-par 74 on Monday to come away as the winner of the Cheyenne Mountain Invite at the Country Club of Colorado.

She found herself in a tight battle with Sarah Hwang from St. Mary’s, who was in her grouping for the round. Sample fell behind early with bogeys on No. 2 and No. 4, the two par 5 holes on the front nine. She was able to par the rest of the way out.

Hwang rattled off eight straight pars to start her round, but took a double-bogey on No. 9 to make the turn tied with Sample.

Six consecutive pars to start the back nine helped Sample grab a lead and a birdie on 16 gave her every bit of momentum she needed.

But back-to-back bogeys to end the round gave her some pause for concern.

“I’m excited and obviously I love winning,” Sample said. “But I feel like I could’ve better which is good especially with postseason coming up.”

She committed the same gaff on her final two holes. She put a lot of power behind two long putts that blew by the cup, giving her tougher looks for par than what she would have wanted.

Sample finished in a tie for 10th at last year’s state tournament but is playing well enough to put herself in contention for a title later this month.

Air Academy brought home the team title, shooting a collective 273 on the day, one stroke better than Pine Creek and Cheyenne Mountain. The Eagles officially took second place with the tiebreaker.

“I think it’s going to be a great confidence booster,” Air Academy coach Jim Cole said. “The best we’ve finished so far is second at one of our conference tournaments. (The girls) are going to be very pleased with this.”

And they were. As scores were posted outside of the pro shop, Isabell Deak, Paige Langum, Taylor Martinez and Maddie Stewart watched in a mix of shock and joy that their team score bettered Pine Creek and Cheyenne Mountain – the defending Class 4A state runner-up.

“This is a such a rise from the last few years,” Deak said. “I think it makes us all confident and excited to see what the future holds with the possibility of state.”

Deak led the Kadets with a 86 overall. Martinez shot a 89 and Langum ended with a 98. Langum shot 50 on the front and was two strokes better on the back which turned out to be the difference maker.

The host Indians are another team hoping to improve from their final standing last year. Cheyenne Mountain finished in second as a team at state, and the Indians know that they just have to put together quality rounds in the coming weeks.

“For the team it’s really about us playing the golf I know that we’re capable of,” senior Casey Fetters said. “I think I played well today which is a good sign going into regionals, I just think we need to all play up to our potential.”

Fetters placed fourth individually behind Sample, Hwang and Pine Creek’s Elly Carlson. It was the seventh top-10 finish for the Cheyenne Mountain senior.

Regional tournaments will take place next week and will set the field for the 2017 state tournaments.
