  • Ball Fever: 4A/5A boys basketball Great 8 recap, Final 4 preview

The first word, when thinking big-school boys basketball, that comes to mind is PARITY.

This was a theme for most of the season and taking a look at the eight remaining Class 5A/4A squads heading to the Final 4 you get the feeling that any of the four have the ability to hoist the trophy.

What a ride it was arriving at this point! Last second, ESPN-worthy, photo finishes to lights-out 30-point individual scoring performances the Great 8 treated us to some outstanding hoops.

Let’s see how it all played out.

If you missed any of the action from The Denver Coliseum we have you covered with our 5A Great 8 roundup.

Photos is what you desire? Tons of shots from all four games.

    Rock Canyon Grandview boys basketball
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Rock Canyon fully looked the part of a team who held the No. 1 5A ranking for a time during the season jumping out to a 17-2 lead at one point in the first quarter. While Grandview looked a bit shell-shocked, their saving grace came in the form of reserve senior Kain Mack who immediately hit a 3-point goal when he entered the game and added 10 quick first half points.

LeChaun Duhart and big man Gage Prim settled down in the second half and the Wolves made their run with huge late 3’s from Ben Boone but crafty Sam Masten made that key steal that will now go down in history.

The Wolves showed the heart they did all season and showed tremendous class in such a heartbreaking loss. The Jags, led in scoring by Tyson Gilbert on this day, again showed they can survive and beat you teams in a number of ways!

Denver East came in with perhaps the hottest player in the state with Daylen Kountz scoring 37 or more in recent games. Kountz could not get a rhythm on this night due to picking up his third foul late in the first quarter. The Raptors took full advantage of the star sitting out and displayed why they are one of the deeper squads in 5A.

Colbey Ross was scoreless in the first half but not an issue as Ozor and Walton combined for 28 points on the night. When it was time to put the game away Ross dominated the ball late, got to the free throw line, and scored 19 in the second half to seal it.

    George Washington boys basketball team
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

We heard from up north that this Fort Collins team was solid and don’t be surprised if they try to run, press, and push the pace vs. GW. One problem there: no team left standing may be able to push the pace quite like the George Washington Patriots!

Knowing that Denver East had already lost, there was extra incentive for GW to hold court for the inner city. Fort Collins athletes Jacob Pfaffinger and crew came to play, didn’t back down, but GW just had too many athletes that fit the high pressure “run and gun” system a bit better.

Be proud up north! The Lambkins represented well, but these Patriots look ready to carry the weight of an entire city if they have to!

    Chauncey Billups Region

    ThunderRidge Chatfield boys basketball team
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

It seems a little fitting that the player the Fever Crew felt played the best in the Coliseum this day on both ends of the floor (offense & defense) was T-Ridge’s Kaison Hammonds. He is a poised, lethal scorer who carries himself more mature than his junior season tag reveals. He scored 30 points this night including a cool 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Didn’t get to make it out to Jeffco much this year but was thoroughly impressed with Chatfield’s team ball and the way they share the rock. Their 23-game win streak was for real, but the Grizzlies overall length bothered them defensively. Quite a year for the Chargers to be proud of.

    The Look Ahead:

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Our Great 8 has produced two rematches in Friday’s Final 4 from the regular season. Love that these four teams scheduled TOUGH non league foes during the season and now they get to go at it one more time for “all the marbles”!

First game up will be GW vs. T-Ridge. The Grizzlies came into the Patriots house and beat them by 10 back on Jan. 6. GW actually led at the half in the first match but a 22-8 third quarter along with a 30-point burst from senior Corey Seng earned the impressive road win for the Grizz two months ago.

The Patriots are a different, more confident squad this time around beaming confidence after their DPL championship overtime win over Denver East and they just happen to be on a 14-game winning streak since that early January loss to T-Ridge. This will be a classic city vs. suburbs match! The Patriots will need to get this game at their 83 points-per-game average, while Coach Ortiz and crew will be game planning to prevent just that.

Game 2 brings us a healthy rematch as well where Eaglecrest lost by 5 in their December visit to Rock Canyon. We can’t read a lot into this as it was the third game of the season and both teams have three months of growth since then.

What stands out here to our crew was a 34-23 third quarter back in that December game with the advantage going to the Jags. Sam Masten scored 28 in that game and we’re sure he was a big piece of that 34 points in the third stage. Let’s also not forget that transfer Tyson Gilbert was not on the floor for the Jags, who were impressive in this home win.

The Raptors will be hungry to erase that December memory and return Coach John Olander to the title game in his final year at the helm.

The Raptors will need a few players in double digits displaying their depth as they did in the Great 8 to keep our Ball Fever preseason prediction of their title alive!

    Class 4A

Our Fever Crew spent the entire Great 8 day at the Denver Coliseum with the 5A action but rest assured our CHSAANow staff has you covered with full reports from 4A action, as well

The full report on the Jeffco rivalry game between Golden and Evergreen.

Reports of over 4,000 Pueblo fans took in the instant classic between South and West.

    The Look Ahead:

Don’t be fooled by this 12 seed tag on Golden. Adam Thistlewood is riding an 18-point, 6-rebound average per game streak right now and they have won their three playoff games to this point by a combined total of 56 points!

Now here comes their toughest test however in No. 1 overall seed Valor. The Eagles score at a bit of a higher clip than Golden and have star power of one of the best in the state, regardless of class, Jalen Sanders who was our preseason pick to lead Valor in avenging last year’s 4A title loss.

We have another rematch here in Lewis-Palmer/Pueblo South. Back in December the Rangers used a 22-9 fourth-quarter comeback to seal the win at Pueblo South 54-47. Hard to say which team is hotter here, with P South on a 10-game winning streak and riding the high of sweeping defending 4A champ Pueblo West in their two battles this season.

Not to be outdone, this gritty Lewis-Palmer team is on an 18-game win streak of their own! After a few losses early this Rangers team has certainly found their stride behind Joel Scott’s 14 points per game.

The Coliseum has certainly seen it’s fair share of good ball of the years but this time next week it will have hosted our 2017 Champions! Get out and enjoy, folks.

    The Look Back:

    • Braxton Bertolette kept his hot scoring streak going dropping 38 to help Fossil Ridge advance past Lincoln.
    • Matt Johnson Jr., recently named EMAC player of the year, came out blazing with 33 points for Rangeview in win over Mountain Range.
    • Well hello there Mr. Kountz! How about 37 points from Daylen in Denver East’s second round home win over a game Fossil Ridge squad. Angels are dangerous!
    • With only three seniors on the roster, this young Smoky Hill squad is confident and they beat Highlands Ranch by more than 20.
    • Our 5A favorite Eaglecrest came on strong late beating a tough Rangeview squad by 16 to head again to the Sweet 16.
    • Vista Ridge got a road win over Lakewood behind Hunter Maldonado’s 20 points.

    The Look Ahead:

    Lewis-Palmer Vista Ridge boys basketball
    Hunter Maldonado. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

We talked about “star power” helping teams advance and Hunter Maldonado showed up big for Vista Ridge to get to this point. The problem is Wyoming-bound Maldonado now has to play one of the most balanced squads in the state who has a star of their own in Eaglecrest’s Colbey Ross. With Vista Ridge playing without senior stellar point guard Noah Beatty we don’t see them advancing here. The Raptors came up short last season to Overland and they will get to the Coliseum again.

You want athletes? Get yourself to Smoky’s gym on Wednesday night when the Buffs host Denver East. Arguably, our state’s two best players in class 2018 and 2019 will be on the floor in Daylen Kountz and Kenny Foster respectively. The Angels have maybe the hottest player in the state in Kountz along with Coach Carey’s playoff experience. The young Buffaloes are hot, but can that confidence take down a perennial power? This will be fun!

    Mark Randall Region

    The Look Back:

    • Big-time home win for the school and community as Montbello (FNE) took care of round one business downing Dakota Ridge behind Steven Goss III 16 points.
    • Rock Canyon used a 20-11 fourth quarter advantage to pull away from Boulder late! On to Sweet 16 Jags.
    • Mountain Vista sophomore Simon May scored 14 and the Eagles held Legend to 5 fourth quarter points completing the comeback win.
    • Grandview shook off some late season rust to cruise to 27-point win over Grand Junction.
The defending champ Overland dealt with change after losing a tremendous senior class from last year and Montbello (FNE) came in their house to pull off one of the big upsets of round two 68-56. The Warriors dominated the fourth quarter here.

    The Look Ahead:

Mountain Vista got serious on defense shutting Legend down in the fourth quarter of round two. They’ll need all of that defense to stop the inside/out tandem of Gage Prim and Lechaun Duhart from Grandview. Prim is one of our state’s top big men and Duhart is a “microwave” type point guard who can heat up and score 30 if needed. Will be tough for Vista to take down the higher seed here.

The Fever Crew loves confident guard play come playoff time and Rock Canyon has two in juniors Sam Masten and Tyson Gilbert. The Jags defend hard and grind their ways to wins! Montbello (FNE) is led by Aaris Bonds who is a utility knife, college ready player. The Warriors are the surprise in 5A so far and may be able to give the Jags a lot of trouble in a low scoring affair.

    Chauncey Billups Region

    The Look Back:

    • Our Fever Crew got out to Cherokee Trail in round one and were treated to Jaizec Lottie’s 27 points as the Cougars raced away from Douglas County.
    • Cortney Dean stepped up with 17 points to get Denver South its first 5A playoff win over Heritage.
    • 21 points from senior Jeremiah Pruitt helped Liberty take down Monarch.
    • Our Crew thought Denver South had a great chance to knock off Cherry Creek but the Bruins held home court and won 80-71.
    • Rampart’s size proved to be too much for Cherokee Trail. Jackson Ehrlin scored 22 in the big second round win.
    • ThunderRidge cruised to a 43-point win to advance to the Sweet 16.
    • Chatfield can RUN and DEFEND. That’s how you beat Fountain-Fort Carson 94-57!

    The Look Ahead:

    Pine Creek Rampart boys basketball
    (Josh Watt/CHSAANow.com)

Size, size, size! The Fever Crew has been flooded with info from our friends down south about how good this Rampart squad is and the coverage they deserve. There could be something to this as they beat a solid Cherokee Trail team by 20 reach the Sweet 16. Well, Rampart, if you want to prove you belong there’s no better opportunity than to face the team that was No. 1 for a great majority of the season: ThunderRidge. The Grizzlies balance and scoring prowess of Corey Seng should prove to be too much here.

Lucas St. Germain led the three-point barrage for Chatfield scoring 30 points in the blowout of Fountain-Fort Carson. The Chargers run but don’t think it’s just run and gun. They pride themselves on defense and we think Cherry Creek may be in trouble if this turns into a track race.

    Guy Gibbs Region

    The Look Back:

    Arapahoe Pine Creek boys basketball
    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)
    • Senior Sam Foster scores 19 points and Broomfield started fast in win over Grand Junction Central.
    • Ralston Valley’s leading scorer fouled out but his buddies came through!
    • Believe us when we tell you: you don’t want to see Sitting Eagle Gym as your destination of round one of the playoffs as Pine Creek found out visiting Arapahoe.
    • Regis found a way to get it done at home vs. Arvada West.
    • Chaparral took down Continental foe Regis by 3 with 19 points from Joseph Dalton in a second-round win.
    • Jervay Green was at it again, dropping 32 points for a hot GW squad.
    • Speaking of 32, check out Jacob Pfaffinger leading Fort Collins to the Sweet 16.
    • The 32 point scoring continues as Kyle Lucasiewicz did just that for Arapahoe as they pulled a huge upset at Doherty. The Warriors travel well!

    The Look Ahead:

Denver East vs. George Washington boys basketball
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

Jervay Green, folks. George Washington is talented across the board but we see Green as the difference maker here. A lead senior who plays with a little attitude! Chaparral is young and talented. They came up short in their early season visit to GW but they have grown since that matchup and can cause the Patriots some trouble in this return. Keeping it close early will be key for the Wolverines.

There’s those Warriors! Arapahoe is a huge surprise here as the No. 27 seed but they are “Centennial Tough”. Fort Collins wants to prove they are legit after taking care of business up north. Kyle Lucasieweicz and Jacob Pfaffinger both scored 32 points each for the respective teams in round two. Look for these two to step up again Wednesday.

Valor Christian Thomas Jefferson boys bsaketball
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
    • Widefield put up 93 points and ran away from Roosevelt.
    • Mountain View got 13 from senior J. Greylock and held off the Classical Academy to advance.
    • Valor needed a big second half surge to put away Thomas Jefferson.
    • Michael Ward scored 22 for Mead in second round win over Skyview.

    The Look Ahead:

Northridge and Mead both ready to prove they belong in the big dance. Valor Christian is the top overall seed and we see them advancing here.

    Bill Weimar Region

    The Look Back:

    (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)
    • Falcon got 22 points from Noah Martinez and slid past Green Mountain.
    • Niwot scored 30 in the fourth quarter but Elizabeth held on for 73-69 win.
    • Longmont cruised in its first round match vs. Frederick.
    • Golden had a trio of juniors step up big vs. Longmont in the second round.
    • A bit of an unknown for us but Durango is playing some ball as they took down Elizabeth by 17!
    • Tanner Baird, just a sophomore, scored 18 for Holy Family as they cruised into Sweet 16 over Falcon.

    The Look Ahead:

A little bit of the known and unknown here. Holy Family and Golden very familiar with each other in a match that seems a little too early. Durango won’t find it easy vs. Evergreen who has been tested against some of our best 4A squads in league play.

    Jim Baggot Region

    The Look Back:

Silver Creek Palmer Ridge boys basketball
    (Katie Pickrell/CHSAANow.com)
    • Windsor got 13 from senior Jake Hammond to beat Steamboat by 4.
    • Sophomore Chano Gonzales with 15 points in Glenwood Springs first round victory.
    • “Number 7 Seed?” said defending champ Pueblo West as they hammered Glenwood Springs in round two.
    • Silver Creek took care of business to advance and get their shot at the defending champs!
    • Top 4A Seed Pueblo South won the first and fourth quarter, starting/finishing strong in win over Windsor by 9.
    • Vista PEAK followed Marquise Johnson and his 19 points to a 5-point win over Ponderosa to march into Sweet 16.

    The Look Ahead:

Can’t help but pull for a kid like Marquise Johnson and his journey with Vista PEAK but now they face the top overall seed in Pueblo South. South’s late season heroics took down the defending champ Pueblo West and they were tested by an always tough Windsor in round two.

Speaking of Pueblo West, they took out their frustrations of landing a 7 seed on on Glenwood Springs proving they were awakened by late loss to Pueblo South.

    Richard Tate Region

    The Look Back:

    (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)
    • Senior Garrett Martin scored 22 for Eagle Valley but not enough as Wheatridge pulls out the tight win late.
    • Palmer Ridge 70-39 over Pueblo East to advance!
    • Cheyenne Mountain got things started here using their height advantage to secure round one victory over Harrison.
    • The 3 seed D’Evelyn got defensive in their second round win.
    • Sand Creek is a scary 14 seed and they took it to Thompson Valley by 19.
    • It took two overtimes and 23 points from CJ Jennings for Sierra to advance past Pueblo Central.
    • Lewis-Palmer was cooking as they trounced Wheat Ridge 81-47.

    The Look Ahead:

Great matchup here as one of the hottest teams in the state D’Evelyn welcomes a Sand Creek squad who has battled through on and off the court adversity to regain the form that had them as our No. 1 4A team for a few weeks during the season. Does D’Shawn Schwartz, CU-commit, take over now that playoffs are here?

In the other match we have two teams that could easily advance in Lewis-Palmer and Sierra. The Rangers hot streak faces one of our top point guards in the state, CJ Jennings.

Wednesday, March 1 is action-packed, folks! Whether you are a 5A or 4A fan get out and enjoy CO hoops at it’s best.

  • Ball Fever: Previewing the 4A and 5A boys basketball state tournaments

Another outstanding season in the books, folks! If the excitement we were treated to in our regular season finales are any sign of what’s to come we are in for an epic postseason.

Friday night, Rock Canyon upset No. 1 ThunderRidge, earning a share of the Continental title.

Not to be out done, George Washing and Denver East served up what folks are calling an “instant classic” overtime thriller, where the Patriots outlasted the Angels to bring home the DPL title.

The four Class 5A teams highlighted here can knock the other off any given night, but one would be foolish to not add Chatfield and Ball Fever preseason pick Eaglecrest to the list of 5A squads who can win it all.

Valor and Pueblo West have made solid arguments themselves for the opportunity of a 4A rematch in March! Keep in mind D’Evelyn, which has made a strong run, and don’t forget Sand Creek with the star power of CU-bound D’Shawn Shwartz.

Those who follow Ball Fever also know we don’t think this is a rare time for Colorado hoops, but a result of numerous factors leading to good basketball being played on our high school courts. We saw numerous teams hold the No. 1 spot in 5A and 4A this season which speaks to the parity and high level ball being played.

The buzz about Colorado hoops is legit and we can thank a growing basketball community for that from our peewee rec leagues to competitive club ball, increasing individual personal training opportunities, and truly dedicated high school staffs.

The basketball product hitting the Colorado hardwood is improving and colleges of all levels are taking notice! We have even started a little tracking of the college players with our Ball Fever “College Watch” on twitter at @BallFever_CO_Tr.

Great time to be a part of Colorado hoops … let’s get to the madness!

    Class 5A

    Larry Farmer Region

Rock Canyon Eaglecrest boys basketball Colbey Ross
    (John Priest/CHSAANow.com)

Have to start with the No. 1 overall seed Eaglecrest here, which is looking to send Coach John Olander out as a champion in his final season leading the Raptors. It gets tough immediately for them with a possible second-round match up with EMAC league champ Rangeview, who is young but have a senior lead point guard in Matt Johnson Jr. at the helm.

This is jumping way ahead but couldn’t help but peek at that possible Denver East/Smoky Hill Sweet 16 match in the bottom part of this region. Quite an athletic treat if that happens!

    Favorites:

    • Eaglecrest was our preseason 5A pick to win it all and we are sticking with that. Guard play of a proven leader in Colbey Ross who is surrounded by senior leadership on this squad could make it happen.
    • Size of a Denver East or Smoky Hill could cause the Raptors problems though!

    Watch out for:

    • Star power, and a “go to” guy in the playoffs can go a long way. Who has that? Vista Ridge, led by senior Hunter Maldonado (Wyoming commit) has the ability to carry his squad.
    • Not just star power, but scoring power as well comes in the form of Fossil Ridge’s Braxton Bertolette who averaged 38 amazing points in his last three games! These guys can pull an upset.

    Mark Randall Region

Regis Jesuit Rock Canyon boys basketball
    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

With Grandview slipping a bit late in the season the hottest team here is Rock Canyon coming off there late heroics beating No. 1 ThunderRidge to end the season.

Some potential fun second round matches here if Legend and Mountain Vista rekindle their Continental league rivalry.

If Montbello (FNE) can advance past Dakota Ridge they can head to Overalnd for A-Town vs. DPL fun!

    Favorites:

    • Rock Canyon is on a mission, folks. They can score with you, but can also win a slug fest if necessary with the back court tandem of juniors Sam Masten and Tyson Gilbert leading the way.
    • We can see Overland or Montbello giving them a test but the Jags are coming out of this region.
    • Grandview will have their hands full with Mountain Vista if that happens in Sweet 16 but will the inside out magic of LeChaun Duhart and Gage Prim be enough?

    Watch out for:

    • Mountain Vista was hindered by injuries and if Coach Wood gets a healthy crew pressing/running the floor they can ruin someone’s plans.
    • Check out Aaris Bonds who is a college bound player for Montbello (FNE) but they may not have enough size or veterans around him to make a strong run.

    Chauncey Billups Region

    ThunderRidge boys basketball team
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

The ThunderRidge Grizzlies held a long run at 5A No. 1 before losing final regular season game. Fever Crew thinks that will just focus them and increase the hunger.

Next thing that stands out in this region is the team with our state’s longest winning streak, Chatfield, drawing a 7 seed. Chargers will have to prove that what they did in Jeffco league was no fluke and “charge” through the tourney competition!

    Favorites:

    • Don’t have to look further than the two teams already mentioned here! ThunderRidge and Chatfield look destined for a collision course on paper.
    • It may surprise some but we’ll go with Cherokee Trail as third in the region ranking.

    Watch out for:

    • We preach point guard play in late season and Jaziec Lottie can lead “Centennial Tough” Cherokee Trail to surprise wins with his late game heroics.
    • Our Fever Crew got out to Cherry Creek at Smoky Hill Friday night and witnessed a flat performance from the Bruins. If they don’t find their fire look out for Denver South to make a surprise sweet 16 run with sharp shooting tandem Connor Nelson/Tucker Cargile along with slashing Cortney Dean.

    Guy Gibbs Region

    George Washington boys basketball team
    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

Looking for “swag” and confidence? The hot George Washington Patriots have it! Ultra quick back court of the Fuggett brothers, the “rim protector” Tray Pierce, and scoring machine Jervae Green give the Patriots a real shot at returning to basketball glory.

We like the potential match up Arapahoe visiting Doherty in Round 2. The Warriors don’t back down and travel well!

A team that joined our top-10 late in the season and is eager to prove themselves are the Lambkins from Fort Collins.

    Favorites:

    • GW is the clear favorite with the momentum of their overtime DPL title win over Denver East.
    • Fort Collins has been a bit of an unknown to those of us in the city and if they can get their first win they’ll likely run into a balanced Doherty team who has a confident floor leader of their own in Brevin Brimble.
    • Doherty is back to back league champ and proved they aren’t afraid of a tough environment in their late season win at Denver East.

    Watch out for:

    • Young and talented Wolverines over at Chaparral would like nothing more than to face a Regis team they are very familiar with and a possible rematch with GW in the Sweet 16 this time around!

    (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Valor had its fair share of time as our No. 1 4A squad and no surprise they are the top overall seed. Their senior heavy squad was the Fever Crew’s preseason pick to avenge their title loss last season and we see that coming true.

Next thing that jumped out for us here was a potential Sweet 16 match between Northridge and Mead. Both teams have the potential for more but may have to see each other early!

    Favorites:

    • As stated above, its Valor in our camp. Senior trio of Jalen Sanders, Kayle Knuckles, and Dylan McCaffrey looking go out on top!

    Watch out for:

    • Thomas Jefferson went through a stretch where they missed some top players and we see them playing Valor tough if they advance past Erie. Ravel Moody and Galen Street are two seniors who played tough against DPL 5A competition.

    Bill Weimar Region

    Pueblo West Durango boys basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

    Tough. Region. Here.

I believe there are six teams that were in our 4A top-10 poll at some point of the season here! Durango coming in at the No. 4 seed will be eager to prove they are worthy and a second-round matchup of Golden/Longmont, should it happen, just seems “waaaaay” too early.

    Favorites:

    • If Durango lives up to their seeding they will have their hands full with possible foe Evergreen, who has faced some of 4A’s best. We see Holy Family coming out of this region but Golden will have a lot to say about things.

    Watch out for:

    • Longmont, Holy Family, and Golden at the bottom of this bracket almost seems unfair. All would be able to advance elsewhere but only one will come out!

    Jim Baggot Region

Pueblo West Valor Christian boys basketball
    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Whoa! if Chatfield in 5A thought they were better than a 7 seed, you better believe defending champ Pueblo West is feeling that same chip on their shoulder.

Pueblo South’s late season surge and knocking off Pueblo West who was 4A No. 1 at the time led to their No. 2 overall seed.

    Favorites:

    • A Great 8 rematch of Pueblo South and Pueblo West would be absolutely lovely here! A lot of work before that happens, but it is likely.

    Watch out for:

    • Two teams: Vista PEAK in the top of this bracket has the athletes to play with anyone in 4A and Silver Creek in the bottom side looks like they can definitely schedule a date with Pueblo West if they take care of business early.

    Richard Tate Region

    (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Ooooohhhh the tough regions continue! Sand Creek is the toughest 14 seed in history and we’re sure they have a chip on their shoulder due to the late season slide. D’Evelyn is a deserving 3 seed here and tough league battles will serve them well.

    Favorites:

    • Even with Sand Creek’s star power we believe D’Evelyn’s consistent play will pay off and get them over the hump!

    Watch out for:

    • Have we mentioned point guard play in the playoffs yet? Well, there’s a PG named “CJ” for Sierra who could lead the Stallions on a run that wouldn’t surprise us at all.

Because we knew where teams would fall and ultimately be seeded, the RPI standings took a bit of fun out of waiting for brackets on Sunday like in the past where we were patient (and funny on social media) while that human element debated.

Our crew had about the same, if not more, frustration with the previous selections than RPI. A balance of the objective measure system and human touch will eventually prevail. If you have that answer now: PLEASE RAISER YOUR HAND and present it vs. aimless complaint.

Well, this year the human element will be 100 percent on the court in the hands of these awesome athletes. The cream will rise, folks. Always does … get out and enjoy!

  • Ball Fever: Record-setting performances in boys hoops; top team knocked off

Big-school boys basketball teams can see the finish line as league champs are starting to be crowned with a few more coming down to the final week.

There was a record-setting individual performance this week, a No. 1 squad went down, and in The Look Ahead we can’t wait for T-Ridge/Rock Canyon and Denver East/GW in awesome season ending match ups!

    Eaglecrest Grandview boys basketball
    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)
    • Grandview has been on an absolute roll this season but Eaglecrest was eager to avenge an earlier loss to their league foe and Dan Mohrmann covers how this one might just lock up the “Centennial Tough” league for the Raptors behind seniors Ross and Ozors.
    • Guess who has the longest winning streak in 5A? Chatfield at 18! Dennis Pleuss watched them all but wrap up Jeffco.

    • No. 2 Valor in a “thriller” vs. Evergreen and Dennis Pleuss is on it.
    • Fort Collins, now in 5A top 10, runs past Horizon and we have highlights!
    • Three players scored 12 each along with Michael Ward’s 16 in Mead’s 29-point win over Windsor.
    • Upset city! We may be looking at a new No. 1 in 4A as Pueblo South was up 34-19 at halftime over Pueblo West and held on for 67-64 win to shake things up!
    • The Parker battle between Chaparral and Legend is always fun and young Chaparral got 16 points from sophomore Ronnie DeGray III in a solid Continental league road win.
    • Senior Holten Sparling scored 20 points in a surprising overtime win for Highlands Ranch over No. 6 Rock Canyon. The Fever Crew reports that the H-Ranch was tough on our guy Tyson Gilbert in his return but I’m sure Gilbert will get the last laugh when the Jags move on to the playoffs.
    • Record setting performance, folks! We’ve discussed the scoring power of GW’s Jervae Green in the past but no one saw a 64 point EXPLOSION which placed him in the CHSAA record books blowing out Denver West in the historic night.

  • Ball Fever: Boys basketball’s regular season hits the “fourth quarter”

We have reached what coaches like to call the “fourth quarter” of the season with most of our big schools facing five games or fewer on the schedule.

ThunderRidge didn’t falter at all, as we discussed in our midweek report, and the other six teams in our 5A top-6 can likely argue they can beat anyone on a given day. Pueblo West and Valor Christian are making more statements late in the week that they both want that 4A title rematch.

    Let’s take a look!

    A Look Back

    Thursday, Feb. 2

    • It took overtime for Legend to top league for Regis Jesuit and Jack Eberhard has your action shots.

    Saturday, Feb. 4

Cherry Creek Cherokee Trail boys basketball
    Jaizec Lottie. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
    • Two of our state’s top point guards got it on Saturday in Grandview’s LeChaun Duhart and Cherokee Trail’s Jaizec Lottie. However, it was big man Gage Prim who controlled this game for the Wolves with a 26-point, 12-rebound double-double! Grandview is on a nice run and no one will want to see their guard/big man tandem late in the season. Don’t forget about the Cougars either who’s lead point guard Lottie is averaging 20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists despite missing four games due to injury. “Our team has to keep working,” said Lottie in our Ball Fever chat this week. Our Fever Crew has talked with top recruiters who believe Lottie would have 10-15 Division I offers if he were on the east or west coast. We have no doubt the right opportunity will come for the lead point guard! Lottie finished our chat just as you would expect from a commanding PG: “Some games we play better than others, and at this point we need to play consistent and strong in order to make a run.” We covered Lottie’s 32-point game in win last week and he’s poised to get his team back on track late in the season.
    • Top 3 action on Saturday night? Dennis Pleuss has Jalen Sanders 16 points leading to Valor’s big win over D’Evelyn.
    • Garrett Martin scored 18 and Standley Lake was up at the half but not enough to hold off No. 6 Golden’s comeback 55-48!
    • High academic senior Ikenna Ozor stung my Arap Warriors on Saturday with 16 points in the 5th ranked Raptors 25-point home win.
    • To end this week’s coverage No. 1 Pueblo West led from beginning to end in 70-56 win over Falcon.

Overland Cherry Creek boys basketball dunk
    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
    • “We’re feeling good right now, just taking one game at a time,” were the words from Gatorade player of the year Colbey Ross in our Ball Fever midweek chat. The Raptors rolled Mullen 91-60 locking up a tie atop the ultra tough Centennial league. “We focus on not getting too high or too low,” added Ross, ending with, “We’re just playing our brand of basketball and playing hard!” Ross is set for Pepperdine in the fall but for now he’s focused on making our Ball Fever prediction of the Raptors winning 5A come true! (Just kidding…kinda)
    • Silver Creek held Littleton to 34 points in the blowout win on the Pepsi Center floor!
    • Derrian Reed scores 18 as Sierra continues to roll blowing out Woodland Park.
    • Didn’t see this one coming! Hunter Maldonado scored 29 but not enough for Vista RIdge as they fell to Lewis-Palmer.

    • Centennial League just continues to beat each other up! This night, Daijon Smith and Tucson Redding each had 15 as Overland upset No. 8 Cherry Creek.
    • Big stars were missing in this one but Chatfield handled Lakewood in the jeffco battle 67-55.
    • Goodness! No. 4 Grandview is rolling and beat our beloved Arap Warriors 61-32. That means the Wolves are for real, for real!

    Midweek Thoughts

    ThunderRidge boys basketball team
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Ummm…uhhhh: ThunderRidge! Coach Ortiz has this group absolutely rolling. We’ve talked a lot about parity lately, and we love that competition, but the Grizzlies are clearly No. 1 in 5A right now.

Our Ball Fever chat with Colbey Ross revealed a quiet confidence of an Eaglecrest squad that might just be hitting their stride.

And the looming 5A question seems to be, “Just how good is Chatfield and Grandview!??”

Sand Creek may, arguably, have our state’s top player in D’Shawn Schwartz but they have fallen hard in 4A, leaving that door open for defending champ Pueblo West led by David Simental to rise to the top again.

Simental has put on pounds of muscle? He’s an elite scorer and if what we’ve heard about his improved frame is for real the Cyclones will be tough to stop!

  • Ball Fever: Parity beginning to show in boys basketball

Not sure we can even call some of these upsets any more, folks!

The ball is getting good and ranked teams continue to get caught by hungry teams. The parity is beginning to show in our big school ball which will make for an exciting post season, but we still have plenty of action before we get there!

The midweek Fever report took a look at Week 8’s early action and stat leaders. Let’s see how the remainder of the week played out.

    A Look Back

    Thursday, Jan. 26

Sierra The Classical Academy boys basketball
    CJ Jennings. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
    • Sierra knocking on that 4A top-10 door again and pulled off a tight 1-point win over Widefield behind CJ Jennings 29 point, 6 rebounds, 4 assist, 3 steal effort — “stat-stuffin!” This is the Stallions’ second one-point win of the week and senior leader Jennings stated, “Two tough games last week. I feel like the Mesa Ridge game made us better. We were down the entire game, their biggest lead was 15, but we had a ‘We aren’t losing’ attitude.” In our Ball Fever chat CJ added, “Derrian Reed hit crucial free throws and we got strong when we needed to. Mesa’s a great team and I think we suffered a hangover vs. Widefield coming out sluggish, not executing when we should of which gave Widefield a chance to win but in the end we made plays and made it out with the win.” Jennings is averaging 29 points and has the play making ability to cause a ton of trouble for any 4A team Sierra sees late season. Impressive, CJ!
    • Doherty is another Springs squad just outside the top-10 as well but capable of beating anyone on a given night if Brevin Brimble heats up and he scored 18 in their lopsided win over Liberty.

    Friday, Jan. 27

Denver South George Washington boys basketball
    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)
    • Fever Crew got out to Rangeview this week and was treated to another 20 plus effort from Matt Johnson Jr., the floor leader for the Raiders in their 8-point win over Vista Peak. Rangeview jumped out to a 10-2 lead with Johnson’s energy leading the way. The closed out the first half with 7 points in the quarter from confident looking sophomore Jodaun Dotson. The Bison have two of their own, Marquise and T’Rae, who were both impressive scoring double figures and driving the lane hard. When Vista PEAK scrambled and made it close it was some nice inside moves late by the Raiders big man Ryan Ongala that helped seal it. Rangewiew takes early control of the EMAC!
    • GW big man, 6-foot-8 Tray Pierce, the “Rim Protector”, had 6 big blocks but added 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal in the Patriots’ road win at a packed Denver South.
    • Northridge making their argument to get back into the 4A top-10, knocking off No. 5 Silver Creek by 7. Tremendous defense got it done giving up 6 points or less in two quarters.
    • Golden, now No. 7, pulled off a 13 point win over feisty Wheat Ridge.
    • We’ll be looking at a new No. 1 in 4A as Sand Creek loses another by double digits this week! Lewis-Palmer took control with a 26-10 second quarter and never looked back after seizing control.
    • Pueblo West, No. 2 in 4A, staking its claim to regain the top spot spanked Pueblo East by 32!
    • Big scoring nights for Ikenna Ozor and Victor Garnes lifted No. 5 Eaglecrest to a key league win over Overland.
    • Senior Michael Ward continues his strong play scoring 25 for Mead in the 10 point win over Roosevelt.

    • Jalen Sanders with another stand out 30 point performance in Valor’s key league win over Green Mountain.

    • Watch this Vista Ridge squad folks! They followed the win over No. 1 Sand Creek with a 61-38 victory over Falcon where seniors Noah Beatty and Hunter Maldonado combine for 48!
    • Senior Michael Dillon’s 16 cooled off a hot No. 3 D’Evelyn as Evergreen pulled of the upset!

    Saturday, Jan. 28

    • No. 1 ThunderRidge flexed its Continental league musle putting a whoopin’ by 27 points on Legend with junior Kaison Hammonds leading with 24 along with Corey Seng’s 20.
    • The Fever Crew is fully aware the “Bellos” Montbello (FNE) Warriors have a little talked about beast in senior Aaris Bonds, who dazzled the Thunder Dome crowd on Saturday with 26 points (10 rebound double-double) scoring in a myriad of ways, but it wasn’t enough to take league foe Denver East who leaned on Daylen Kountz’s 20-point effort to hold on for the 4 point win.
    • Lottie’s back! Cherokee Trail is a totally different team when the floor leader Jaizec is healthy and his 26 points helped the Cougars clinch a “barn burner” 77-75 win over a solid Cherry Creek squad. Lottie added 5 rebounds and 9 assists, “stat-stuffin”!
    • Doherty showing off some its future with Kyrele Benford scoring 19 along with fellow junior Joseph Golden adding 14 in the win over Liberty.
    • PG Isaac Essien is back for Mountain Vista and Jake Belknapp scored 21 but not enough to stop No. 6 Rock Canyon’s 30-point fourth quarter explosion leading to 8-point Jags win.

    Midweek Thoughts

    Chaparral Denver East boys basketball
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Consensus from the Fever Crew was that Denver East still looks a little disjointed but are ultra talented. We also want to see Eaglecrest turn it loose! Press, run, score, get above the rim…then put it in Ross’ hands late if necessary.

We’ve chatted about this before but a senior floor leader with reliable big man down low is the formula Grandview is riding right now and shows what can be done with a squad following the “system” over at Grandview.

Can’t forget 4A! D’Evelyn is rockin’ y’all, and Pueblo West looks on a mission to repeat! No shame is No. 1 Sand Creek’s loss to Vista Ridge. Hunter Maldonado and Noah Beatty are true leaders who may surprise many down the stretch.

Get to the court and enjoy, hoop fans!

  • Ball Fever: Boys hoops teams start to jockey for postseason position

Hoop fans! Midseason ball is heating up and the thick of league play is upon us. Each win counts and wins on the road have proven to be especially difficult.

ThunderRidge, George Washington, Pueblo West, and Sand Creek look like they will remain atop our Class 5A/4A rankings respectively.

The cream is rising but more surprises are surely on the horizon!

    Thursday, Jan. 19

Sierra The Classical Academy boys basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
    • Sam Masten (29 points) has been joined in the back court now by tough Tyson Gilbert, who added 21 points in the squad’s blowout of league foe Ponderosa 94-50. Gilbert has played four games after transferring to Rock Canyon this year and is averaging 15 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, adding to an already strong Jaguar squad. On Rock Canyon’s recent success and joining the Jags Gilbert stated, “It’s great being back on the court at the varsity level. My teammates have helped to make the transition smooth for me!” In our Ball Fever chat, Tyson also added, “Coach Grams and the coaching staff challenge us in practice to be our best everyday! The support we get from our student body is special! Hopefully we can continue to grow to be the best we can be!” Gilbert’s positive outlook and attitude on and off the floor doesn’t surprise our Fever Crew at all as we’ve watched this young man mature in club and school ball! The Jags have a special one here and this Gilbert/Masten back court has to be dealt with this year and next.
    • Dan Mohrmann was in the house as Classical Academy threw a double team at stud CJ Jennings that didn’t phase him.
    • It took over time for Regis to take down Douglas County! Jack Eberhard has the Action Shots.

Hoop fans! Midweek Ball Fever was all about upsets, and they continued into the weekend as well.

Let’s check out some more of the standout early 2017 performances!

    Saturday, Jan. 14

    Cherry Creek Arapahoe boys basketball
    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)
    • Don’t look now but Denver South has won 7 games in a row and just beat No. 8 Holy Family 71-55. “Live by the three die by the three” is a hoops cliche’ that often reads true and on this night the Rebels Tucker Cargile and Connor Nelson combined for ELEVEN of the teams FIFTEEN three pointers! On the seven-game winning streak Cargile was part of our Ball Fever chat stating, “Our positive team has been key throughout the season. We all knew if we could continue to lift each other up and believe in each other’s abilities the shots would fall and wins would pile up.” Our Fever Crew had the pleasure of coaching Tucker in spring/summer ball over the last few years and there’s no surprise that he hit six three’s in one game … we’ve seen it over and over! Awesome young man on and off the floor.
    • No individual player and no team quite as hot as 5A No. 1 ThunderRidge and Corey Seng. Joking with Corey on social media we’ve had the opportunity to use our phrase “You Got Seng’d!” as Corey has strung together impressive 30 or more point performances vs. some of our state’s best competition. The bigger the stage, the more it seems this young man steps up! In Part II of our Ball Fever chat this week we did our best to pull some “30 piece” info out of Seng but he was all about the TEAM stating, “Everyone on the team is really buying into their role, and that’s why I feel we’ve been so successful! We are very long across our lineup and that’s helped us on the defensive end.” With that type of team defense and Seng’s scoring ability the Grizzlies will go far. This Saturday they went into a tough Regis gym and won by 5 … and yes, you guessed it: Cory “Seng’d” the Raiders with 33 points!
    • Arapahoe started well and were hitting the boards early but Max Potter caught Cherry Creek turning it on in second half.
    • No. 2 Pueblo West got a strong 7 point win over 3A No. 1 Colorado Springs Christian.
    • No. 4 Chatfield, as hot as any squad, used a 24-5 fourth quarter advantage to pull away from Ralston Valley 80-43.
    • Peter Chopra scored 14 and Boulder defense shut down Northglenn 66-31.
    • 4A top-10 Match! Northridge visited Vista PEAK and the Bison were unfriendly hosts as Marquiece Johnson scored 20 points in the 16-point win.
    • Junior Goy Wang poured in 26 points as Overland got a tough win over Cherokee Trail.
    • Alex Sandstrom closed out our week 6 coverage scoring 28 points for No. 6 Mead in big win over game Longmont.
