ARVADA — D’Evelyn’s boys soccer program is in uncharted territory.

The Jaguars, No. 3 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 4A boys’ soccer rankings, have never won a conference title. D’Evelyn (11-1, 7-0 in league) took one step closer to staking claim to the 4A Jeffco League championship Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory over rival Golden.

“It’s really big for them,” D’Evelyn coach Paul Moline said of his team’s season so far that includes a current eight-game winning streak. “We’ve got a great group of seniors who have been around for four years. They were here for my first year here. For them to taste this is great for them too.”

Seniors Christian Denton and Dewitt Davis combined to produce D’Evelyn’s first goal Wednesday night at the North Area Athletic Complex. Denton streaked down the left side and fired a shot on Golden senior goalie Jasper Hughes. A diving Hughes saved Denton’s shot, but the rebound went to Davis who was able to put the rebound into the back of the net.

“Our game plan was when we got shot on goal we had to shoot low,” Denton said. “That goalie (Hughes) is good. Dewitt did a good job following and sliding one home.”

The Jaguars extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second half. Sophomore Wesley Tedstrom ripped a shot past Hughes in the 44th minute. It was Tedstrom’s team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Golden (9-4, 5-2) put heavy pressure on D’Evelyn after the Jaguars took the two-goal lead. Senior Casey Crowley had a pair of free kicks just outside D’Evelyn’s goalie box. D’Evelyn senior goalie Chris Linden came up big with a four second-half saves.

It was the fifth game this season Linden hasn’t given up a goal.

“We trained all week that Chris (Linden) had to win everything in the air. He did it tonight,” Moline said. “He did a great job for us.”

Linden is no stranger to playing in close games. D’Evelyn has eight wins by a one-goal margin this season. The Jaguars’ lone loss was to 5A Jeffco’s Chatfield back in early September.

“I just try to keep myself calm and composed,” Linden said of playing in several tight games. “I try not to get to wrapped up in the game.”

Golden senior Mark Seaholm, who rocketed a shot off the cross bar just before halftime, was robbed by Linden in the 70th minute on a diving save by the senior.

The loss moved the Demons a pair of games behind the Jaguars in the conference standings. Golden’s next game is 6 p.m. Friday back at NAAC against Conifer.

D’Evelyn plays at Lakewood Memorial Field at 6 p.m. Friday against Arvada. With only two conference games remaining for the Jaguars, that first league title is well within reach.

“We aren’t done yet. We want to finish it out. We’ve got Arvada and Green Mountain left,” Denton said. “Those are two games we should win, but we’ve got to come out and play hard. Then get ready for a deep playoff run.”

ARVADA — Arvada West won’t easily let go of the Class 5A Jeffco League boys soccer title.

The three-time defending conference champions scored a much-needed league win Wednesday night at the North Area Athletic Complex. A-West handed Columbine, ranked No. 5 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A boys soccer poll, its first loss of the season. The Wildcats (6-6, 3-1 in league) took a 1-0 victory against the Rebels (8-1-1, 2-1).

“We had to come to win after we lost to RV,” A-West senior captain Drew Bender said referring to a tough 3-2 overtime loss to Ralston Valley on Monday at NAAC. “We had to give it all we had out on the field. I’m proud of my team. We pulled it off.”

A-West sophomore Luke Drumright scored the lone goal on the chilly night at NAAC. The forward hammered a shot from close range in the 8th minute of the first half. The shot ricocheted off Columbine junior defender Jacob Reed and into the back of the net.

It was the fourth goal of the season for the sophomore.

“I was just kind of standing near the keeper and the ball landed right where I wanted it,” Drumright said of his game-winning goal. “We knocked it around the box a lot. I was just happy that I was the one to tap it in.”

Columbine’s best scoring chance game in the 23rd minute when senior Nathan Dunning fired a shot on goal, but A-West junior goalkeeper Andy Fendel made the save. The Rebels could only muster up two shots on goal as they were shut out for the first time this season.

Columbine senior Jake Penrose (6) tries to keep his balance as the ball goes out of bounds Wednesday night. The Rebels suffered their first loss of the season with a 1-0 defeat to Arvada West. (Dennis Pleuss)

Columbine was on an eight-game winning streak coming into the league game where it had outscored its opponents 24-3.

“I definitely think it was a defensive game,” said Bender who is a defender for the Wildcats. “It came from the entire team, not just the backline. Everyone defended and worked hard.”

A-West’s leading scorer Kyler Fowkes had a couple of great opportunities to give the Wildcats a two-goal lead in the second half, but had both his shots just missed their target.

However, Drumright’s early goal was all A-West needed to get right back into the race for the 5A Jeffco conference title.

“I think we learned how to finish a game,” A-West coach Troy Gette said. “I think the RV game taught us some lessons.”

Ralston Valley (6-5, 4-0) has a one-game lead over A-West and Columbine midway through the league schedule. The Mustangs edged Dakota Ridge 2-1 Wednesday night at Lakewood Memorial Field. However, Gette feels his team is sitting in a good position.

A-West has won four of its last five games after suffering a five-game losing streak during non-league play. The Wildcats already have victories over Chatfield and Columbine under their belts.

“Chatfield, RV and Columbine still have to all play each other and we are all done with them,” Gette said. “If you ask me, we’re in the driver’s seat.”

A-West returns to action against Pomona on Oct. 7. Columbine has a non-league game at home against Lincoln at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

LITTLETON — Some kind of adversity seemingly pops up for nearly every team during the season.

For Doherty and Chatfield, two squads ranked in the top-10 of this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys soccer rankings, misfortune presented itself in a few different forms Friday afternoon in the non-league tilt at Chatfield High School. Maybe fittingly, after 100 minutes of play No. 7 Doherty and No. 10 Chatfield settled for a 2-2 draw.

“It’s a gutsy performance from our boys to pick up the lack when we were down a man and down a goal. We never quit and battled back to even it up,” Doherty coach Jon Shub said after the tie. “I’m very pleased with their resolve. The cards were against them and they could have quit. That isn’t their character.”

    Chatfield Doherty boys soccer

Doherty had to play a man down for nearly 70 minutes after forward Carlos Donelson received a red card in the 31st minute of the first half. The Spartans (7-2-1, 1-1 in 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) actually took a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute with a goal by Marcus Krause while playing a man down.

However, Chatfield (5-2-2, 1-1 in 5A Jeffco League) answered back quickly with a goal from senior Jamey McGrath in the 47th minute. The Chargers took a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute when senior Jared Reiss fired home a penalty kick that McGrath drew when he was taken down in the Spartans’ goal box.

It appeared Chatfield would take a 2-1 victory, but with five minutes to play Krause struck again with a header off a long free kick by Doherty goalie Nick Pallisco to tie the game at 2-2 in the 75th minute.

“He (Krause) has definitely been our leader and stalwart,” Shub said. “We expect big things from him. I think he stepped up to the plate today.”

The Chargers had the best scoring chances during the two 10-minute overtime periods. Reiss had the best scoring opportunity in the 93rd minute, but his shot went just wide of the net.

“It was tough,” McGrath said of the final result. “We weren’t able to pull it out in overtime. It’s an unfortunate tie.”

Chatfield’s biggest hardship so far this season is having its returning all-state striker Ben Overholt relegated to the bench. Overholt is in a sling after breaking his arm last week against Arapahoe. The Chargers started the season off strong with a 4-0-1 mark, but since Overholt’s injury the team is 1-2-1.

“Frankly, we’ve been so depleted with injuries and sickness,” Chatfield coach Brock Blume said. “Big players are sitting here on the bench. Trying to find our identity as a group without those players has been difficult.”

The most glaring absence is Overholt. As a junior he led the Chargers with 13 goals. Chatfield finished with a 12-4-1 record last year with Overholt leading the way.

“Having Ben obviously helps the team. I hope we get him back soon,” McGrath said. “He is a goal-scoring kid. He had six goals before he went out. It’s a huge part of our team missing.”

Blume said he hopes to get Overholt back this season, but admitted it’s a “wait-and-see” situation on how quickly his arm heals. The focus for Chatfield is to get on a winning streak in conference play after dropping a game in overtime last Tuesday to defending league champion Arvada West.

“We’ve got to take care of our business,” Blume said. “That’s our goal on Monday and for the rest of league.”

Chatfield gets back into its conference schedule Monday against Pomona. The Chargers face the Panthers at 6 p.m. at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

Doherty has a quick turnaround. The Spartans host Highlands Ranch at 6 p.m. Saturday at Gerry Berry Stadium in Colorado Springs. It will be the fourth game in six days for Doherty.

“This definitely boosts our confidence,” Shub said before his team headed back to Colorado Springs.
