  • Flooding won’t affect postseason qualification for softball, volleyball or boys soccer

Teams unable to reschedule games postponed due to the recent flooding will not be penalized when it comes to postseason seeding.

Volleyball, softball and boys soccer all use MaxPreps’ ranking system in determining qualifiers for playoffs and state tournaments. The ranking systems are derived from a formula, and the inability to reschedule games will not affect the rankings.

“The MaxPreps rankings system doesn’t arbitrarily award points for simply playing and winning or losing an additional game,” said Gerry Valerio, MaxPreps’ State Association Manager for Colorado. “The system takes the total body of work for each team to determine the rankings, regardless of the number of games played.  So, for those volleyball, softball and soccer teams who aren’t able to reschedule all their games, their rankings won’t be negatively impacted by it.”

Similarly, football’s Wild Card points formula is adjusting for any cancelled games.

However, athletes must attend regional qualifiers for any sport which has them — such as tennis, cross country or gymnastics — in order to qualify for their respective state championships.

  • Rangeview, Standley Lake added to 5A boys soccer poll

Rangeview and Standley Lake both joined the CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys soccer poll this week.

Rangeview is sixth this week, while Standley Lake is eighth.

Elsewhere, 4A added Lewis-Palmer (No. 9) and Denver North (No. 10).

The 3A poll added Bruce Randolph (No. 10).

All three No. 1 teams remained the same this week. Those are Cherry Creek (5A), Battle Mountain (4A) and The Classical Academy (3A).

Complete polls for all classes are below.

  • Downpour of rain forces widespread postponements

    (via @ErieHSAthletics on Twitter)
    (via @ErieHSAthletics on Twitter)

A massive rainstorm has caused widespread postponements of athletic events this weekend, including a slew of games or matches on Thursday.

Most schools have moved games to next week, or later in the month, but football teams have had an especially tough time rescheduling because of the week-to-week nature of the schedule.

With that in mind, the following is a statement from Harry Waterman, assistant commissioner in charge of football:

“Regular season games are the jurisdiction of the individual schools and school districts. Because of the number of conflicts that may occur, the individual schools and school districts are responsible for making the determination on any games to be rescheduled. Sunday is not an option for games to be rescheduled per CHSAA bylaws. Teams will be allowed to reschedule games to Monday, even if it means playing two games in a week.”

So, yes, we will be getting Monday Night Football next week.

Below is a list of postponements, for all sports. Are we missing a game? Email it to rcasey@chsaa.org.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY — The second game of Air Academy’s 20th Annual Kadet Kickoff Classic came down virtually the last second before the home team prevailed 3-2 over Greeley Central Friday afternoon.

In a game that remained close throughout, the teams matched goals midway through the first half when Air Academy’s Blake Doran scored an unassisted goal at 23:53. The Kadets kept the lead at 1-0 for nearly 10 minutes. At 34:33, Central’s Juan Ceja evened the game at 1-1 sliding a shot past the AA keeper.

At the 59:23 mark, Air Academy’s Gabriel Stuger scored to give the Kadets a 2-1 lead. It was a lead that held for nearly the rest of the game as the teams traded shots for the next 20 minutes. Tough defense and stronger goalie play kept either team at bay.

The Wildcats’ Angel Moncada, though, felt the pressure of a dwindling clock and fired off a shot from about 30 yards out, catching the AAHS defense by surprise. When the ball settled in the back of the net at 76:24, GCHS had a tie at 2-2.

It looked as if time would expire with the game still at 2-2, but the Kadet’s Brittain Romes had other ides and netted a hard 15-yard shot from the right side at 78:21 to give Air Academy the 3-2 win.

Air Academy opened the week, ranked fifth in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A boys soccer poll. Greeley Central played much of the second half a man down.

In addition to AAHS and GCHS, other teams in the Kadet Kickoff Classic include Discovery Canyon, Fruita Monument, Fossil Ridge, Montrose, Sand Creek and St. Mary’s (Colo. Spgs.).
