Seniors play big role in field hockey’s growth

Colorado Academy is the No. 1 seed in this year’s state playoffs. (Courtesy photo) This group leads by example, and if they have it there way, the number of girls following in their footsteps will continue to grow.
Now in its 16th season, field hockey has proven a popular sport among young women across thirteen state high schools. Recently, the sport has grown in Colorado schools — thanks to members of the class of 2013.
“Every summer there is a summer league where you can come back and play,” said Colorado Academy captain Mandy Weeks. “Alumni, current high schoolers, young kids and adults all come and play during the summer.”
In Colorado, there are three premier field hockey clubs that girls can get involved in: Denver Field Hockey Club, and Colorado Field Hockey Association and Club Lewy located in Colorado Springs. Weeks has gotten involved in Denver’s club, along with a handful of other girls from local high schools.
At Smoky Hill, Jessica Schnitzer first got involved in the game in middle school when the varsity team came down to promote their team.
“They came down and passed out flyers and taught us how to play,” said Schnitzer. “They kind of told us about the team.”
Now part of the varsity team, Schnitzer and her teammates have gotten involved in the community. Smoky Hill, along with a handful of other schools, have started programs that raise awareness about their teams at the seventh- and eighth-grade levels.
“I try to make sure the people at our school know about field hockey and what we’re all about,” Schnitzer said. “The team makes sure we get involved in school activities like participating in the homecoming parade and going down to the middle school and working with the younger kids.”

Kent Denver’s Chloe Dikeou. (Courtesy photo) Players and coaches have both contributed to field hockey’s growth at Kent Denver.
“Field hockey wouldn’t be possible without our coach, Kathy James,” the Sun Devils’ Chloe Dikeou said. “She has helped develop our program tremendously. We have the second largest sports program at our school behind boys lacrosse.”
Some players have gotten so involved in the game that they hope to coach after graduating this summer. Bailey Taber of St. Mary’s Academy and Hannah Coburn of Mountain Vista plan to return as coaches.
“I want to come back next year and help coach — I love sports, encouraging my teammates and teaching the newbies,” Taber said. “At St. Mary’s, it’s very unique. We get to have a ton of fun while staying competitive. Our teammates become our family.”
Coburn has seen the program grow over her time at Mountain Vista.
“I am going to play field hockey in college and it would be my dream to coach when I come back during the summer at the middle school, high school or club level,” Coburn said. “I have been a part of Denver field hockey for four years but have been coaching and mentoring for two. I’m really proud of our school and the passion it has for the sport. I’m really excited to see where the program goes in the future.”
Taber has also helped the sport grow internationally. During a two-week service trip to Uganda last summer, she brought field hockey to an orphanage.
“We brought plastic field hockey sticks and taught some of the kids down there how to play,” Taber said. “I ran camps and we did a bunch of projects for the community on a two-week service trip to an orphanage. I hope to go back next summer with the same organization and help work with them some more.”

(Courtesy photo) Kayla Wayne, of Grandview, has reached out to the athletic community through social media.
“I usually tell people to come out to our games over Facebook or Twitter, and talk to other friends who don’t play,” said Wayne. “A lot of my friends notice how close we are on and off the field and that brings them to games.”
In 2013, Daelynn Demello of Palmer Ridge leads the league in points (55) and goals (20), and is tied for first in assists with 15. She and her team lost to Colorado Academy in last season’s championship game.
“This year we’re hoping to make it to (the state final) again, it will help the sport continue to grow at our school,” Demello said.
This season’s state championship bracket was released Tuesday morning Colorado Academy once again claimed the top seed and will play Cheyenne Mountain in the first round.
The semifinals of will take place on Oct. 23, and a state champion will emerge on Oct. 28 in the finals at All-City stadium in Denver.

Softball roundup: Dakota Ridge, Chatfield move through to state

Dakota Ridge’s Rachelle Foos. (Jordan Morey) Rachelle Foos struck out 19 batters over two games, and Dakota Ridge easily advanced to the Class 5A state softball tournament.
The Eagles were joined by Chatfield as a state qualifier out of Region 3. Both teams will play at the tournament next Friday and Saturday at Aurora Sports Park.
Dakota Ridge cruised through the regional, first topping Fruita Monument 9-2, and then beating Chatfield 9-2.
Eagles coach Marv Van Lingen approached regionals as he would any regular season game.
“We came in with the same mentality that we have tried to maintain all year long. We preach to the girls work ethic and discipline, that’s what you work for,” Van Lingen said. “Nothing fancy, we want fundamentals.”
Last season, Dakota Ridge reached the 5A championship game, where it lost to Loveland. This year’s Eagles entered the regional tournament as the No. 5 seed.
Saturday was Van Lingen’s first appearance at regionals as the varsity coach — he replaced Dave Atencio this offseason after Atencio took the job at Valor Christian. Van Lingen previously headed the JV team for Dakota Ridge.
“A lot of these girls have been under me in the JV program,” he said. “There is a familiarity with this group, each one has come up with me on the at the JV level.”

(Jordan Morey) Chatfield had to get to state the hard way. The Chargers started the day hot by beating Greeley West 16-6. But the loss to Dakota Ridge set up an elimination game between Chatfield and Fruita Monument.
“I told them if they really want it, they needed to dig down deep and find it,” said Chargers coach Nicole Janssen.
Through the first three and a half innings, it appeared that the game would be a defensive struggle between the two teams. Both pitchers hadn’t given up any runs until the Chargers scored three in the bottom of the third. The Chargers led thereafter and won 5-2.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Jarecki had a fantastic game against Fruita with eight strikeouts and only one earned run in six innings. Jarecki said that her rise and curve balls were blowing by Fruita.
Jarecki prepared her team ready to play following the tough loss to Dakota Ridge, and has a gameplan for state.

(Jordan Morey) “When we were in a circle I started jumping up and down and said ‘Let’s go, let’s get this!” Jarecki said. “We need to continue to keep being a team. In the huddle, our coach said that we play as a team and not as individuals.”
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day out of 5A regional play was 14th-seeded Castle View. After beating No. 19 Rocky Mountain, No. 14 Castle View defeated No. 3 Legend 5-4. Legend, however, rebounded to make the field.
ThunderRidge, a No. 26 seed, also made the 5A tournament.
There weren’t any major upsets in 4A regionals. No. 1 Wheat Ridge dominated both of its games, winning 13-1 against Mead and 13-3 against Palmer Ridge. No. 23 Roosevelt was among the 16 qualifiers.
In 3A, No. 9 Lamar upset No. 4 Eaton 2-1 — however, both teams will make the tournament.
On Sunday, a CHSAA committee will seed the 5A, 4A and 3A brackets. Each bracket will be announced on CHSAANow.com.

Broomfield football grinds out an upset win over No. 3 Standley Lake

Standley Lake senior Trey Jarvis makes a leaping grab between Broomfield defenders Kyle Holbrook and Matt Hawkins on Friday at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada. Broomfield knocked off the previously undefeated Gators 27-23 in the Class 4A Mountain League match up. (Dennis Pleuss) ARVADA — Broomfield wasted little time on its offensive opportunities Friday on the football field at the North Area Athletic Complex.
The Eagles used a trio of quick scoring drives — four plays and a pair of three-play possessions — before grinding out a 10-play, go-ahead scoring drive to open the fourth quarter against previously undefeated Standley Lake. Broomfield senior Noah Tripp scored on a 20-yard touchdown run for the final score in a 27-23 victory against the No. 3-ranked Gators in the Class 4A Mountain League tilt.
“Our defense was on the field way too much,” said Tripp, who finished with 15 carries for 133 yards and touchdown runs of 62 and 20 yards. “We had to make the most of our offensive series.”
Broomfield (4-2, 2-0) had only 37 offensive plays from scrimmage. Standley Lake (6-1, 1-1), on the other hand, ran 70 offensive plays.
The Gators got a solid night from junior quarterback Jacob Naranjo was 19-for-26 passing for 267 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to senior Matt Fujinami. The loss ended Standley Lake’s chance for a school record 7-0 start to the season.
“It hurts. You have to use that hurt to fuel you along the way,” Fujinami said. “We aren’t done. It’s only one loss.”
Fujinami had touchdown catches of 7 and 24 yards, along with a 16-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that gave the Gators a 16-7 lead.

Broomfield senior Alec McLain gets off a pass during the first half Friday at the North Area Athletic Complex. McLain threw a pair of touchdowns in the Eagles’ fourth straight victory of the season. (Dennis Pleuss) Tripp quickly answered Fujinami with his 62-yard sprint to the end zone. The Eagles then had a key defensive stop at the end of the first half. Senior Kyle Tacoronte broke up a pass intended for Fujinami in the end zone. Standley Lake had to settle for a field goal attempt that sailed wide left just before halftime.
Broomfield coach Gary Davies called the defensive stop the “play of the game.” The Eagles took the lead early in the third quarter on a 57-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Alec McLain to senior Simeon Combs. It was the second McLain-to-Combs touchdown connection of the game. The two hooked up for a 16-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
“We told these guys that this is probably the biggest game of their lives, which it was,” Davies said. “Most of these guys weren’t varsity last year.”
Standley Lake drove down to the Eagles’ 5-yard line with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter with a shot of regaining the lead. However, after a conference between the officiating crew, it was ruled that senior Trey Muller fumbled and Broomfield recovered on the 9-yard line.
The Gators got the ball back with less than three minutes to play, but eventually turned the ball over on downs on their last possession.
“We made mistakes along the road,” Fujinami said. “We are going to work on fixing those and control what we can control.”
Broomfield has a pair of tough tests coming up the following two weeks. The Eagles host a resurgent Montbello team at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 before going on the road to face Monarch, the defending 4A state champions, on Oct. 25.
Standley Lake faces Jeffco rival Golden at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at NAAC. The Demons are coming off their first victory of the season with a win against George Washington.

Standley Lake senior Matt Fujinami looks for some running room as Broomfield seniors Riley Derus and Luke McAninch close in Friday at the North Area Athletic Complex. Fujinami scored three touchdowns for the Gators, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles improved to 4-2 on the season with a 27-23 victory. (Dennis Pleuss)
