Grandview’s Addison O’Grady named 2021 girls Freddie Steinmark Award winner

Addison O’Grady is appreciative of opportunities to compete with her teammates and interact with friends and classmates. The past year of COVID restrictions has taught us to not take these opportunities for granted. Who would have thought that a sports season could be canceled before the champion was crowned? Who would have thought that classroom activities would become virtual sessions with participants showing up on computer screens in rows of little boxes?

Well, Addison O’Grady, Grandview High School’s outstanding dual-sport athlete, knows all to well that this has been part of life as a high school athlete due to COVID. Her 2020 basketball season was left unfulfilled as the championship game was canceled before she and her Grandview Wolves teammates could tip-off against Cherry Creek. This was a lost opportunity to represent her school and make memories with her teammates.

A recruiting “trip” to Iowa City, Iowa to meet the Iowa Hawkeye basketball coaching staff became a Zoom meeting for one of the top-50 basketball recruits in the country. This was an opportunity lost to get to know her future coaches and teammates at one of the top universities in the country.

So, when Addi has had the opportunity to put on her Grandview uniform, she has made the most of it. Four trips to the Final Four in basketball and three state tournament appearances in volleyball have been opportunities to display her outstanding talent. Talent that has placed her on multiple All-State teams in both basketball and volleyball and made her one of the top high school basketball players in the country.

But Addison does not want to be boxed in like a Zoom meeting. She found it important to not just be a great basketball player, but to add more dimensions to her life in and out of athletics. In her Steinmark nomination letter Addi wrote that she has “…always strived to be more than just an athlete because I am more than an athlete. Often athletes are put in boxes, forced to specialize in one sport, told that they don’t need to worry about academics as much as athletics, or don’t make meaningful connections with people, but this award and Steinmark’s character and legacy are proof that athletes can have dimension. Athletes are more and should be expected to be more than just athletes.” Her basketball coach, Josh Ulitzky, echoed this sentiment by saying that “Addison took pride in putting on her Grandview High School uniforms and excelled at a level not matched by many young woman athletes, especially at 5A schools.”

Taking advantage of learning opportunities has also been important to Addison. Math teacher John Schultz commented that Addison “….could have chosen to take it easy in math during her senior year, yet she has shown great dedication in taking Calculus III and Differential Equations, which will prepare her for any mathematics and engineering curriculum she will encounter in college.”

Addison is already becoming familiar with college encounters as she took a call earlier this week from Dan Watkins, Colorado High School Coaches Association President, while in a dorm room on the University of Iowa campus during a break from basketball camp workouts. Addison was thrilled to learn about receiving the 2021 Steinmark Award and was thankful for the support her family, coaches, teammates, teachers, and classmates had shown during her high school career. Addison said she learned to not take anything for granted and to make the most of the opportunities she is presented with. She added that some of the COVID-restrictions allowed her to become closer with her teammates at Grandview and allowed her to share experiences and traditions with her younger Grandview teammates that she hopes will benefit them in the future.

Addison will also take her genuine interest in helping others with her to Iowa City. Addison spent many hours of community service while in high school assisting patients at Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House, and veterans at the VA Hospital in Aurora. This is yet another dimension to an outstanding young person that is proud to carry on the Freddie Steinmark legacy.

The Steinmark Award was established in 1972 and honors Freddie Steinmark, who excelled in football, basketball, and baseball while attending Wheat Ridge High School in the 1960s. He was also an outstanding student and was active in several school and community-oriented endeavors before attending the University of Texas, where he helped the Longhorns to the national football title in 1969. Freddie died from cancer in 1971 at the age of 22. Students athletes nominated for the award must be seniors who have maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 and participated in at least two varsity sports, having earned at least All-Conference in one sport and All-State in another.

Addison is the 49th winner of the girls Steinmark Award since it was first presented to girls in 1974. The first girl to win the Steinmark Award was Anne Vento of Pueblo Centennial in 1974. There were two winners of the award in 1984. Dave Logan of Wheat Ridge High School, and now the extremely well-known sports announcer for the Denver Broncos and other sports endeavors, was the first boys’ winner of the award in 1972.

In 2020, Emily Cavey of Berthoud received the girls’ Steinmark and Caleb Rillos of Ralston Valley was the recipient for the boys.

Finalists for the 2021 Steinmark Award: Rylee Crouch, Horizon; Kendyl Kirkwood, Fleming; Kylie Kravig, University; and Kendyl MacAskil, Palisade.

Grandview’s Lauren Betts named Gatorade Colorado girls basketball player of the year

Grandview’s Lauren Betts has been a standout girls basketball player for the last three seasons, so it’s no surprise that awards are going to fall into her possession.

Betts was named the Colorado girls basketball player of the year by Gatorade on Thursday. She is the second Grandview player in the last five years to receive the honor. Michaela Onyenwere was named the player of the year in 2017, just before she embarked on a successful collegiate career at UCLA.

Like Onyenwere, Betts will land in the Pac-12, but she’ll be more to the northern side of California as she’ll join three other Colorado standouts at Stanford. Discovery Canyon’s Ashten Prechtel, Regis Jesuit’s Fran Belibi and Cherry Creek’s Jan Van Gytenbeek all helped the Cardinal claim the 2021 NCAA championship and are excited to Betts join the program.

But before she does that, she’ll have to play her senior season at Grandview. As a junior, Betts averaged 17.5 points and 11 rebounds per game. The Wolves looked nearly unstoppable throughout the season, but ended up losing in the Class 5A semifinals to Regis Jesuit.

For her career, she’s averaging 15.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. She has already made a huge impact for USA basketball as she helped the U-16 team claim a gold medal at FIBA Americas two years ago. She is currently ranked the No. 1 recruit in the country for the class of 2022 by ESPN.

Off the court she remains involved with her community as she’s volunteered with Project C.U.R.E. and also worked with the Ronald McDonald House in Denver, serving as a youth basketball coach.

“Lauren is like no other player that I have ever been around,” Cherry Creek coach Clint Evans said in Gatorade’s release. “I have game-planned for kids in the past, but Lauren is different because you game plan your defense and your offense around her. Her size is obviously the thing that makes her stand out, but it’s what she can do at that size that makes her the most difficult player to go against.”

Grandview is hoping that trend continues for the 2021-22 season when it will once again take aim at winning a girls basketball state championship.

Grandview girls basketball alum Michaela Onyenwere taken sixth in WNBA Draft

One of Grandview’s all-time greats is headed to the professional level. Michaela Onyenwere, a former standout for the Wolves who led them to the 2017 Class 5A girls basketball championship, was selected by the New York Liberty with the sixth overall pick in the WNBA Draft.

Onyenwere is the 11th Colorado high school product to be selected in the annual draft and the first to ever be taken in the first round.

Her career is one of the best in Colorado state history. She scored 2,290 points, pulled down 1,061 rebounds and had 357 steals in her four years with Grandview. She was a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year and earned McDonald’s All-American honors after her senior season and before heading to California to play basketball for UCLA.

Grandview reached the Final 4 in Onyenwere’s junior season, but lost by two points to eventual champion ThunderRidge. The Wolves rebounded a year later, storming their way through the 5A state tournament where they beat Lakewood 61-32 to win their first state championship in program history.

She showed emotion with her high school career coming to an end, but she still had so much more greatness to give the game.

While playing for the Bruins, she scored 1,888 and grabbed 885 rebounds. She averaged a career-high 19.1 points this last season, her senior year. If not for a pandemic shortened season, she likely would have surpassed the 2,000 point mark for her collegiate career.

She’ll join another Colorado standout when joins the Liberty as Mesa Ridge alum Kylee Shook was taken by New York in the second round of last year’s draft. Shook was the highest drafted Colorado player until Thursday night when Onyenwere was taken at No. 6.

Coronado hires former Mesa Ridge coach Jeff Beatty to take over girls basketball program

A state championship winning coach is heading back to the bench. Coronado has hired Jeff Beatty as its new girls basketball coach. Coronado athletic director Jimmy Porter confirmed the hire to CHSAANow.com on Friday.

Beatty is best known for his flashy suits and his time at Mesa Ridge where he led the Grizzlies to the 2014 Class 4A girls basketball championship. He coached Mesa Ridge standout Kylee Shook as she played her way to a Division I scholarship at Louisville before getting drafted by the WNBA’s New York Liberty in 2020.

He led the team back to a couple of Great 8 appearances then made the 4A Final 4 in 2018, his last season as the coach at Mesa Ridge. He has been away from coaching since that season but was enticed by the opening at Coronado.

“It is with great anticipation that I embark on this opportunity to coach one of the storied basketball programs in the area,” Beatty said. “After taking the last three years off from coaching to start and reinvigorate construction programs in the region, I just could not stay away stay away from coaching any longer. I am excited to dive in to the opportunity to coach at Coronado.”

The Cougars were hovering around the .500 mark in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. They went 9-5 in 2021 and finished second in the 5A/4A Colorado Springs Metro South League.

All-state girls basketball teams for the 2020-21 season

The 2020-21 all-state girls basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of coaches.

A specific player of the year vote was held in each class, as was a vote for coach of the year.

Jeffco Preps With Pleuss is a monthly roundup of Jeffco prep highlights hosted by Dennis Pleuss, Jeffco Public Schools’ sports information director. The Season B sports wrapped up in March. The highlight of the winter season in Jeffco was without question girls and boys wrestling. Chatfield and Pomona were dominate in the first CHSAA sanctioned girls wrestling state tournament. The Chargers won the team title and the Panthers grabbed a pair of individual titles. On the boys side, Pomona captured yet another Class 5A state team championship. Pomona, Chatfield and Columbine all grabbed individual state titles to finish off the wrestling season. Evergreen’s girls swim team won its third straight Class 3A state team championship. Green Mountain’s girls basketball team made another Class 4A state semifinal appearance.

Jeffco seniors shine as Jeffco High School Senior Basketball Games return

LAKEWOOD — It was one final time to play basketball with your friends and even some old foes on the hardwood Thursday night at the Gold Crown Fieldhouse.

“Getting to play with my teammates (McKenna Nichols and Brooklyn Seymour) one more time and play with people who have been competitors for four years was nice,” Ralston Valley senior Sydney Bevington said after the conclusion of the girls’ Jeffco High School Senior Basketball game. “We needed redemption from that last game. It felt good to get out there one last time.”

Bevington didn’t what her final memory of her stellar prep basketball career be Ralston Valley’s Class 5A state quarterfinal loss to Highland Ranch on March 16. The versatile Mustang led the White squad to a 70-58 victory.

Bevington scored a game-high 24 points. Green Mountain’s Courtney Hank, Columbine’s Adrienne Harnum and Nichols each had 10 points in the victory that was coached by Green Mountain’s girls basketball coach Darren Pitzner.

Golden senior Erika Dowell had a huge final quarter for the White team. The Demon scored all of her seven points in the final quarter.

It wasn’t an easy victory for the White squad that had a solid height advantage on the Blue squad. The White led 28-13 early in the second quarter, but the Blue team coached by Arvada West’s girls basketball coach Brady Meeks chipped away at the lead to keep within striking distance.

“The White team was good. They definitely had the height,” Arvada West senior Alexis Folks said. “I think we did a good job battling with them.”

Folks led the Blue squad with 12 points, all on 3-pointers. She was the only player in double-digits for the Blue team, but the squad had 10 different players score as they tried to rally from the double-digit first-half deficit.

“It was great having the team come together even a lot didn’t know each other,” Folks said. “We came together and worked hard.”

The White team buckled down defensively in the final minutes holding the Blue scoreless for the final two minutes after the White’s lead was trimmed to 63-58 with 2 minutes to play.

“They knocked down a lot of 3-pointers and then we kind of stopped playing defense,” Bevington said. “We figured it out and got the win.”

Bevington and Folks were named the MVPs of the game.

“It was a great experience. Especially being able to play with my teammate (A-West senior Madison Manson) one last time and to have (Meeks) coach us one last time,” Folks said. “It was really fun and a great experience.”

The annual senior basketball games that have been put on by the Gold Crown Foundation since 2018 was canceled last season right as the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown all sports around the world.

The crowd was limited this year and everyone inside the Gold Crown Fieldhouse wore masks, but being back on the court was the most important thing for these seniors to close out their high school careers.

“It was the best four years of my life playing with my teammates,” said Bevington, who will continue her basketball career at Santa Clara University. “My coaches and teammates were always there for me. I’m headed off, but I’ll be back. I’m maintain those friendships for the rest of my life.”

5A girls basketball: Valor Christian battles by Regis Jesuit to win third title

COLORADO SPRINGS — As Kindyll Wetta walked off the floor, she grabbed Valor Christian coach Jessika Caldwell and wrapped her up in a big hug. The two have been through a lot together. Caldwell watched for two years as Wetta lost some or all of a basketball season because of separate torn ACLs.

But on a snowy, late-March night in the Broadmoor World Arena, the pain all felt worth it. The top-seeded Eagles had clinched a 67-42 win over No. 2 Regis Jesuit to claim the Class 5A girls basketball title.

“When she came off the court, I was really fighting back tears,” Caldwell said. “Just watching her walk through what she’s walked through and the road that she’s traveled and to see her play with such confidence and toughness, it looked like a kid out there having fun.”

She even got to have fun with her sister. Ali was the surprise of the game, scoring 14 points to double her season average. Overall, the Eagles (16-0 overall) had four players in double figures as Macey Huard (14) and Jenna Siebert (10) also had good nights.

When 2:16 remained in the first quarter, the Eagles led Regis 8-7. Then they closed that frame with a quick 7-3 burst that gave them a 19-10 advantage after the first quarter.

Ali Wetta scored five points in the quarter after coming off the bench and it was just the start of her own breakout party, a party where she finished with 14 points.

“I went in and my teammates were able to find me,” Ali said. “I had some great passes from my teammates and I just wanted to go in and give my all for the seniors.

The Eagles stretched their lead to 29-18 at halftime, thanks to another small spurt — 5-0 — to end that quarter.

Feeling a championship in their grasp, the Eagles kept up the pressure on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Kidyll scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half. She also finished the game with 10 assists to get a double-double in her last high school game.

“There isn’t a better way (to end a career),” Kindyll said. “Now that my sister’s playing after missing a year (with a torn ACL), to win it this year with her is incredible.”

The Eagles also clamped down on Regis guard Avery Vansickle, holding her scoreless in the third quarter as they stretched out their lead. Vansickle eventually finished with 14 points and will go down as one of the great Regis Jesuit players of all-time.

Caldwell couldn’t help but get emotional for her players as their cheered her championship victory, but there was an element of the win that was special for her as well. She played basketball at Coronado before playing collegiately at Baylor.

She embraced her star guard on the same floor where she walked for high school graduation, showing when the time is right, it’s possible to go home again.

“This is where I picked up a basketball for the first time,” she said. “It’s where I fell in love with the game and where my dad taught me and coached me. It was kind of the beginning of my career so to be able to come back and coach these girls and stand on this sideline is pretty special.”
