3A girls swimming and diving state meet moved to Monday

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

The Class 3A girls swimming and diving state championship meet has been moved from this coming Saturday to Monday in anticipation of the forecast snowstorm that is expected to disrupt travel along the Front Range this weekend.

There is no planned changes to the schedules for the 5A and 4A meets scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

The championship venue, the Veteran’s Memorial Aquatic Center, is in Thornton.

CHSAA assistant commissioner Justin Saylor sent the following email to schools on Tuesday:

I have reached out to many of you directly, including Swim/Dive Committee Chair Scott Cohen regarding the forecasted storm over the state on Saturday and Sunday. With schools traveling from Moffat County, Gunnison, La Junta, etc. for this meet, the decision has been made to postpone 3A Swim/Dive until Monday, March 15th. VMAC is an Adams 12 Five Star District Facility and in all likelihood if the storm is half as bad as they are predicting, the facility and district would be closed on Saturday, potentially stranding schools in the metro area for several days. To allow schools an opportunity to plan, we wanted to make this decision as early as possible. Times for the event on Monday will remain the same and a new schedule will be posted online ASAP.

Field hockey’s semifinals and championship game postponed to next week

The state field hockey semifinals and championship game are being postponed to next week.

Below is what has been communicated to the schools involved:

After careful consideration and discussions with all involved, the decision has been made to push the CHSAA state semifinals and final for Field Hockey back to Monday, November 4 and Tuesday, November 5, respectively.

Semifinal games will be played at 5:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. (All-City Stadium) and the Final will be played at 6:00 p.m. (All-City Stadium).

The change allows for proper preparation of playing surfaces and the ability for all four schools to adequately prepare for what is the marquee event in the state for the sport.

The bracket has been updated to reflect these changes.

The snowstorm which has already forced the field hockey and boys soccer state tournaments to adjust dates is now also affecting the wrestling committee meeting, which has been postponed.

The wrestling committee was scheduled to be held on Tuesday, but the meeting has been postponed to a future date to be announced.

“Because we have statewide representation on the committee, and the amount of travel involved, we want to ensure our committee members are able to arrive safely and not have to extend their travel plans,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Adam Bright, who oversees wrestling.

When a new date is announced, CHSAANow will post that information.

This meeting is pretty consequential because the committee will be outlining the new structure for the first girls wrestling season, which will begin in 2020-21.

Field hockey’s state tournament schedule shifts due to weather

Field hockey’s semifinals and championship game are shifting two days each due to inclement weather this week.

The semifinals will move from Tuesday to Thursday, with games remaining at All-City Stadium. The championship is shifting from Thursday to Saturday, and the site is also changing to Stutler Bowl.

The state tournament bracket has been updated to reflect the changes.

A snowstorm rolled into the Denver metro area on Sunday, and snow is expected to continue throughout the day on Monday, and pick up heavily on Tuesday. In addition, Tuesday’s forecast calls for a high of 20 degrees — and 16 degrees when the second game was scheduled to start. That weather necessitated a change in the tournament schedule.

No snow is in the forecast after Wednesday, and temperatures also pick up.

No. 1 Colorado Academy and No. 4 Kent Denver will play at 5:30 p.m. in the first semifinal on Thursday at All-City, with No. 2 Regis Jesuit and No. 3 Cherry Creek following that at 7:15 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. at Stutler Bowl.

With poor weather expected in the metro area next week, the CHSAA office has communicated its weather contingency plan for state field hockey to all schools involved:

The State Field Hockey Tournament is scheduled for October 29th and October 31st at All-City Stadium.

The following is the weather contingency plan:

    • Should inclement weather interfere with play next week, our contingency plan is to move the Semifinal Games to Thursday, October 31st at All-City Stadium. Start times for the Semifinals would be 5:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, October 31st.
    • The CHSAA Field Hockey State Championship Game would be moved to Saturday, November 2nd at Stutler Bowl Stadium. Start time for the Championship would be 3:00 p.m.

The decision to put the contingency plan into effect will be made at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, October 28th.

AURORA — Despite several inches of snow overnight Wednesday, the CHSAA state softball tournament at Aurora Sports Park looks to be on schedule for this weekend’s games.

A site visit on Thursday afternoon was very encouraging, and the fields were in great shape. As a result, starting on schedule at 10 a.m. is a real probability.

“The fields have drained very well, and are drying as we speak,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann, who oversees softball. “If there are any delays, they would be caused by any overnight frost.”

“Aurora Parks and Recreation have done a great job with these fields all year, and they will be in great shape for tournament the next two days,” Borgmann added.

Three classifications will play their tournaments at Aurora Sports Park on Friday and Saturday, with the first two rounds scheduled for Friday, and semifinals and championship games on Saturday. A total of 16 teams per classification qualify.

With poor weather expected in Aurora on Wednesday night, the CHSAA office has communicated its weather contingency plan to all schools involved.

The state softball tournaments are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Aurora Sports Park.

The following is the weather contingency plan:

Should inclement weather interfere with play this weekend, our contingency plan is to use the first available day to conclude the tournament games play be postponed.

For example, if games are postponed on Friday, then Saturday is the next available day and Sunday becomes the next available day after that. If Sunday is not available, then Monday becomes the next available day.

However, the philosophy of this tournament is to push game times back until we can get on the field. That may mean delays of several hours on game times. We will use the lights at those fields that have them, if necessary.

We will work to get all Friday games completed on Friday. Only complexes B and C have lights, so if games are moved from complex A, they will be integrated onto those fields on B and C.

Should frost become a factor, we will simply push back starting times until the fields are ready. Teams are asked to only access the fields when told to by facility management or CHSAA personnel.

There may be situations where the facility availability will force the next available day out of the rotation. All schools need to communicate this to their players, parents, administrators and fans. CHSAANow.com will provide the most up-to-date information on any postponements and game rescheduling.

The forecast today looks favorable for both Friday and Saturday, but it could change quickly, so please look for updates this week.

The forecast calls for a mixture of rain, then snow on Wednesday night, and a high of 44 degrees on Thursday. Friday, the first day of play, calls for a high of 60 degrees, and Saturday calls for a high of 70.

Snow is expected on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The state cross country meet is scheduled to be held at Norris-Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs on Saturday.

The Colorado Springs area is forecast to get snow on Wednesday night, and have a high of 37 degrees on Thursday. However, Friday is slated for a high of 53, and Saturday has a high of 64. The forecasts for Sunday and Monday both call for snow.

As such, the plan from the CHSAA office and course officials is to run the meet as scheduled on Saturday.

“We know snow is expected two days ahead of the event, but we are prepared with plows and other snow removal equipment, and plan to work on the course Thursday and Friday in preparation for Saturday’s races,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Jenn Roberts-Uhlig. “With more snow on the way on Sunday and Monday, we are fully prepared and expecting to run on Saturday.”

5A boys tennis tournament delayed by rain, schedule altered for Friday

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — A late-morning rain storm brought the Class 5A boys tennis state tournament to a halt on Friday, and caused the schedule to be changed.

The plan is to continue play with matches originally scheduled for Friday on Friday afternoon at Gates Tennis Center. This includes all matches through the second round of playbacks. Update: All matches will be played at Gates. None will be moved to Denver Tennis Park.

The hope is to be able to resume play at Gates with warmups as early as 2 p.m. on Friday, if the courts are dry by then.

If there are any matches still on the court at Denver Tennis Park after 10 p.m., they will be moved to Saturday morning at Gates at 8 a.m.

This plan will allow Saturday’s original format with the championship and third-place matches to stick to their originally-scheduled 9 a.m. start, and also allow them to all begin at once, keeping the ceremony of the day intact.

Boys tennis regionals may be moved due to expected snow on Thursday

(Bethany Brookens/CHSAANow.com)

In anticipation of snow on Thursday, and cold temperates on Friday, site directors have been authorized to change the dates, if needed.

Most regionals are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, but a snowstorm is expected to bring more than 2 inches of snow to the Denver metro area on Thursday, as well as a high of 30 degrees.

Snow is also expected in the northern part of the state on Thursday, with highs in the upper 20s. The southern part of the state may also get snow on Thursday, and the forecast is calling for a high in the low 40s. Grand Junction is not expected to get snow on Thursday, but the high is expected to be 45 degrees.

Friday’s forecast calls for a high in the 40s in most of the state, and 50 in Grand Junction.

As a result of this expected weather, play on Tuesday is an option, as well as on Sunday. Regionals must be completed prior to Monday’s seeding meeting.

It is up to each site director to determine how to finish regionals, and the dates of play.

The state tennis tournaments are next week, running Thursday through Friday.

The regional schedule will be updated if regionals adjust dates.
