3A, 4A, and 5A girls golf championships will not continue Tuesday; first-round results are final

(Bethany Brookens/CHSAANow.com)

The second rounds of the girls golf championship tournaments in all classes have been cancelled due to unplayable courses on Tuesday, meaning the first-round results are final.

The 4A and 5A tournaments had hoped to be able to continue with shotgun starts Tuesday, but an overnight snowstorm left the courses at Pelican Lakes (4A) and Harmony (5A) unplayable. The course at Eagle Ranch (3A) is also unplayable, and the move to cancel was also made with safety concerns about travel.

The following message was sent to coaches:

After further consideration, we feel it prudent not to continue with the golf tournament for a number of reasons, including an unplayable course at this time and through the morning hours.

With the cancellation of Round 2, the first-round results will hold us as the final results, where players battled through tough conditions. Award ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. at each golf course.

CHSAANow will have complete coverage following the award ceremonies.

Weather contingency plan for girls golf’s state championships

3A state golf boys

(Bethany Brookens/CHSAANow.com)

Girls golf’s state championships are scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday — and they could be met with some very poor weather.

Forecasts for the northern part of the state are calling for a very high chance of rain — a lot of rain — on Monday, and possibly into Tuesday. The 5A championship is at Harmony Club in Tinmath, and 4A is at Pelican Lakes Golf Club in Windsor.

There is also a chance of rain in Eagle, where 3A is set to be held at Eagle Ranch Golf Course.

As a result, the CHSAA office has communicated the following to participating schools:

You have probably looked at the weather and know that lots of rain is in the forecast with the temperature in the mid-50s. The CHSAA Golf weather delays and cancellation policy is that the completion of any combination 18 holes or more will determine a state champion. The event staff will constantly monitor the local weather through the Colorado Golf Association’s weather service.

Should updates be necessary, they will be found on CHSAANow during the tournaments, as well as our social media accounts.

State track resumes following a weather delay on Friday

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

LAKEWOOD — The state track and field meet entered a weather delay on Friday afternoon due to lightning in the area. It has been cleared to resume.

The delay began at 1:45 p.m., and the Jeffco Stadium was cleared:

The stadium was re-opened at 2:25, and the meet resumed at 2:45:

The meet resumed with the Class 4A boys 4×200-meter relay, which was originally scheduled for 1:45 p.m. After that, there were four other 4x200s to complete on Friday, along with two 4×800 relays, and then eight 4x400s.

The girls tennis state tournaments will use a two-day format to avoid weather

AURORA — The state tennis tournaments in all classifications will condense to a two-day format this week in an effort to avoid poor weather in the forecast.

The tournaments were each scheduled to be played this Thursday through Saturday. Instead, with rain and snow expected on Thursday, the championships will be played only on Friday and Saturday.

The 3A tournament is hosted in Greeley, 4A is in Pueblo, and 5A is in Denver. Both Denver and Greeley are expecting snow on Thursday, while rain is in the forecast for Pueblo.

“It is our hope that this advance notice can help with travel and planning,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bethany Brookens. “While weather in uncertain and there may be an opportunity for sporadic play on Thursday, we believe it is in the best interest to cancel the entire day, so that schools aren’t waiting around and having to pay for hotel rooms.

“Additionally, we want consistency of rest time within a bracket and between brackets. We have used this two-day format before, and we are confident that each classification will still have a great tournament.”

The plan is for the first and second rounds to be played on Friday. Saturday will consist of semifinal and championship matches, along with all playbacks, and third- and fourth-place matches.

The matches will be scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, but play will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Additionally, the 3A and 5A tournaments will split to two sites each.

3A will use Centennial Park in Greeley as its primary site, and the University of Northern Colorado as the second site both days.

5A’s primary site will remain Gates Tennis Center in Denver. A second site — Utah Park in Aurora — will be used on Friday, and Saturday all matches will be held at Gates Tennis Center.

The 4A tournament will be played entirely at Pueblo City Park.

Winter weather is messing with the spring sports schedule early in the season

Here’s no surprise: Weather is messing with spring sports.

Seemingly relentless winter weather over the course of the first two weeks of the spring sports season has caused numerous postponements and cancellations.

The so-called “bomb cyclone” which hit the state on Wednesday brought blizzard-like conditions and caused school districts to close this week, with many still closed on Thursday.

As a result, only two baseball games were completed Wednesday — two teams that were playing out-of-state in Arizona. There were no soccer or lacrosse games played, nor were there any track meets. Meets are also being cancelled for the upcoming weekend due to the weather.

The good news? We’ve still got plenty of time to make up those games. That’s if, of course, the weather plays along.

The CHSAA office was also closed Wednesday due to the weather, and will be closed again on Thursday.

Weather contingency plan for softball regionals

(Bert Borgmann/CHSAANow.com)

Poor weather may affect the start of softball’s postseason this weekend.

The regionals in three classifications — classes 5A, 4A and 3A — have a start date of Saturday. Initially, it was hoped to be able to play some of the regions on Friday, pending the availability of umpires. However poor field conditions, combined with a lack of available umpires on a weekday, have made it so that no regionals will be able to be played on Friday, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Bud Ozzello, who administers softball.

As a result, all softball regionals will be scheduled to begin play on Saturday.

Additionally, the weather forecast on Saturday is calling for moisture in the late afternoon for the metro Denver area, and the northern part of the state. That may affect the completion of some regionals.

If games are unable to be completed, Sunday would be the next available date for completion. However, Sunday may also have weather problems with snow in the forecast for the metro, northern and southern parts of the state.

In that event, any remaining games would be completed on Monday.

The state tournament seeding meeting, scheduled for Monday, will still be held at the CHSAA office as scheduled, or pending the conclusion of all regional tournaments.

Should any further updates be needed, either on the date of regional play, or the timing of the seeding meeting, they will be communicated to participating schools via email, and on CHSAANow.com.

The state tennis tournaments will now begin at 9 a.m. each day due to concerns about cold weather in the early morning.

Each tournament was set to begin play at 8 a.m. for the first time this season, but forecasts are calling for temperatures in the low 30s early on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings for both Denver and Pueblo, sites for the Class 5A and 4A state championships.

The coaches meeting at each site will begin at 8:40 a.m.

4A state baseball tournament dates changed after rain leaves field unplayable

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Following further discussion and feedback from all schools involved, the Class 4A state baseball tournament will begin play on Tuesday.

This change follows an earlier announcement of delaying the tournament from Monday to Friday due to the field at All-Star Park being left unplayable from a rainstrom overnight on Sunday.

However, following communication with all schools, the tournament instead will move to Tuesday and Wednesday for its first two days, with sites at All-Star Park and Metro State.

The tournament will conclude next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sites are to be determined.

The field at All-Star Park in Lakewood, one of the host sites for the 4A event, was hit by rain on Sunday night, and water leaked under the tarp. It left the field unplayable, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann.

The 4A bracket has been updated.

Facing rain, state track meet planning to run as scheduled

Facing a forecast of rain this weekend, the state track and field meet is planning to run as scheduled.

The meet, set to be held at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood, begins Thursday, and Thursday looks to be clear of moisture. But Friday’s forecast brings a 92 percent chance of rain on Friday during the day, and a possibility for thunderstorms in the afternoon. Saturday’s forecast calls for a 50-70 percent chance of rain most of the day.

That said, rain won’t necessarily interrupt every event, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Jenn Roberts-Uhlig, who oversees the sport. Events on the track, as well as some field events, will able to compete as scheduled in the rain

Rain could potentially impact certain field events, and so the CHSAA office is working on contingencies for those events. If necessary, the schedule of events will be updated.

Lightning, however, could interrupt the meet. If lightning strikes within eight miles of Jeffco Stadium, the meet will go on a mandatory 30-minute delay from the most recent strike, and the stadium will need to be cleared.

So long as lightning does not strike again within that eight-mile radius during that 30-minute delay, the meet will resume.

Further updates will be communicated on CHSAANow.com, if necessary.

To avoid rain, 3A and 5A state tennis tournaments could condense to two days

(CHSAANow.com)

Facing a forecast of rain on Saturday, the Class 3A and 5A state tennis tournaments may need to condense to a two-day format, but as of Wednesday morning all three tournaments remain on a three-day schedule.

CHSAA assistant commissioner Bethany Brookens, who administers tennis, sent the following communication out to schools:

Play will remain the same on Thursday with everyone completing the first two rounds of the tournament. If we were to condense to a two-day tournament, the semifinals and finals would both happen on Friday at Centennial Park (3A) and Gates Tennis Center (5A), and there would be a possibility of players/teams having to play up to three times in the consolation bracket. Additionally, coaches should be prepared to have players at multiple sites.

A final determination of format will be made on Thursday, and communicated at the site of the tournament and on CHSAANow.com.

Thank you in advance for your flexibility. Our goal is to have the tournament completed by Saturday, regardless of weather.

This possibility does not apply to the 4A tournament, set to be held in Pueblo, because the forecast isn’t calling for any rain in the area.

The 3A tournament, hosted in Greeley, faces the most dire forecast, with an 87 chance of rain overnight on Friday, and a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday.

The forecast for the 5A tournament in Denver calls for a 50 percent chance of overnight rain on Friday, and a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday.

Further updates, if needed, will be posted on CHSAANow.
