  • Volleyball roundup: Eaton beats Valley in battle of 3A’s top two teams

    Eaton isn’t playing around when it comes to seeking a fifth consecutive Class 3A volleyball title.

    So when the CHSAANow.com No. 1-ranked team in the state played host to No. 2 Valley, the Reds were all business. It showed with a 25-21, 25-13, 21-25, 25-22 win over the Vikings on Thursday night.

    Even though the final score in sets was 3-1, Valley was anything but an easy team to beat. Sophomore Delaney Eckhardt put on a hitting show, finishing the match with 20 kills.

    Senior Halie Diederich did her part as well with 34 assists. But it wasn’t enough for the Vikings who fall to 1-1 on the regular season.

    1A: (2) Fleming 3, (5) Weldon Valley 1

    Fleming opened its season with a 25-23, 18-25, 25-14, 25-20 win over Weldon Valley in a battle of 1A top-five teams.

    After the match was even through the first two sets, the Wildcats took over in the final two to get the victory.

    5A/4A: (6) Cherry Creek 3, (5) Valor Christian 2

    A five-set thriller highlighted Thursday’s volleyball slate and it was 5A No. 6 Cherry Creek who got the 19-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-23, 15-9 win over 4A No. 5 Valor Christian.

    Junior Katie Sherman recorded 21 kills in the win. Ashley Hand helped out with 33 assists while Santana Monroe helped out defensively with five blocks.

  • Boys golf roundup: Resurrection Christian’s Micah Ramirez takes Estes Park Invite

    Resurrection Christian’s Micha Ramirez shot a one-under-par 70 to get the win at the Estes Park Invite on Thursday.

    He got the better of Mountain Range’s Connor Jones by two strokes and Mead’s T.J. Shehee by three.

    Mountain Range took the overall win as a team, shooting 11-over to beat Sterling by seven strokes.

    TCA’s O’Halloran is the only player under par at Mitchell Open

    The Classical Academy’s Liam O’Halloran was the only golfer to end his day in red numbers at Thursday’s Mitchell Open.

    His 70 was good by eight strokes to get the individual win.

    The Titans placed first as a team, shooting 21-over.

    Peak to Peak edges Lutheran at Colorado National

    Ian Thorpe ended his day two-over, but he, Ethan Tartagila, Suchit Sharma and Nishant Datta paced Peak to Peak to get the team win at Thursday’s Metro League tournament.

    The Pumas were just three strokes better than Lutheran. Westin Pals was also two-over on the day, but a stroke or two here and there ended up resulting in a second place finish.

    Prospect Ridge’s Walker Franklin was the best individual at the tournament, shooting a 68 en route to sitting atop the leaderboard.

  • No. 1 Valor Christian softball slips past No. 4 Mullen

    Valor Christian softball beat Mullen 4-3 in a top-five matchup on Wednesday.

    Mullen put a run up in the top of the first, but Valor Christian responded with two runs in the bottom half. After two innings, the Eagles led 3-2.

    Valor Christian added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth that they would end up needing as Mullen pushed a run across in the fifth to cut the score to 4-3.

    Hannah Hollander had three hits and three runs in the win for the No. 1-ranked Eagles.

    Ali Kilponen struck out 12 in a complete game effort on the mound.

    Kilponen is now 6-0 with a 0.70 earned-run-average, and has 77 strikeouts to just three walks.

  • Ponderosa volleyball takes down 5A No. 9 Grandview

    The match went the distance, but Ponderosa volleyball came away with an upset win against Class 5A No. 9 Grandview.

    The Mustangs had a chance to close it out in four sets, but were unsuccessful. The team came out for the fifth set and made sure to finish.

    Ponderosa won 25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-10.

    Grandview’s Georgia Klumker had 28 digs, while senior Payton Wolf recorded 29 assists.

    Ponderosa, who received votes in the preseason volleyball poll, starts the season 2-0 with wins over two solid 5A teams in Cherokee Trail and Grandview.

    Abigail Hildenbrand leads the Mustangs with her assists, and had 28 against Cherokee Trail.

  • No. 1 Fossil Ridge volleyball beats No. 4 Chaparral

    Fossil Ridge volleyball, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A and No. 19 in Maxpreps’ Xcellent 25 Writers’ Poll, took down No. 4 Chaparral on Tuesday. 

    The Sabercats took the match 15-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18. 

    Offensively for Fossil Ridge, it was Emily Wind who led with 17 kills while Tyler Lindgren had 21 assists.

    The team totaled 10 aces off serves.

    Camille Giles led the front line with four blocks and Charlie Durbin recorded 28 digs.

    It’s the ideal way for the defending Class 5A champions to open the season. The Sabercats hit the road on Thursday to face Golden, then will play Monarch and Loveland in league matches before heading to the Eaglecrest tournament starting Sept. 15.

  • No. 2 Eaglecrest softball stays unbeaten with top-10 win against Legend

    No. 2 Eaglecrest softball came away with a convincing win against No. 7 Legend on Monday.

    “We knew that Legend was going to be huge,” Eaglecrest coach Yvette Hendrian said. “They’re a great team and we have the utmost respect for them. One of our things is just learning how to stay focused throughout games through their entirety and not letting off the gas at all.”

    Eaglecrest did exactly that. The Raptors put up three runs in the first inning, then padded their lead with five more in the fourth for a 10-2 win.

    Braelyne Crenshaw went a complete game on the mound, allowed two earned runs and had three RBIs. Anna Keefe went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

    “(Crenshaw) has always had a good bat and she’s done a great job on the mound for us so far,” Hendrian. “She kept the ball low, which we needed her to do and she did a great job of hitting her spots tonight.”

    Hannah Jensen’s sac fly and Crenshaw’s RBI single put the Raptors up 3-0 on Legend after one inning.

    Eaglecrest will play Dakota Ridge Tuesday at home at 4:30 p.m.

    “Mackenzie Hochstetler will start that game,” Hendrian said. “Hopefully we’ll come out swinging the bats as hard as we did tonight, and just keep being aggressive on the bases and playing good defense.”

  • Grand Junction boys golfer Canon Olkowski takes Tiger Invite

    Grand Junction’s Canon Olkowski and Montrose’s Micah Stangebye went toe to toe at Bookcliff Country Club on Monday.

    When it was all said and done, it was Olkowski who emerged the winner.. He shot a four-under-par 67, as did Stangebye, at the Grand Junction Tiger Invite. Olkowski won the event on the second playoff hole.

    Olkowski opened his day with a birdie on the par-five first hole. He made the turn at one-under before making four birdies and a bogey to end the day with his 67.

    Stangebye didn’t go home empty-handed, however, as the Indians came away with the team win. They shot a total of six-over as Jordan Jennings shot a 75 and Ryan Lords ended with a 77.

  • Boys soccer roundup: Kennedy upsets No. 10 Mullen

    Kennedy boys soccer knocked of No. 10 Mullen on Monday.

    The Commanders erupted for five goals in the first half and held that momentum in an eventual 5-2 win.

    Kennedy sits at 2-0 to start the season and has outscored its opponents 13-3 in those two games.

    Michael Jimenez and AJ Gamueda scored the lone goals for the Mustangs, while Uriel Diaz replaced Mullen’s starting goalie, Brandon Rich, and did not allow a goal in the second half.

    The five-goal deficit was too much to overcome, and Mullen fell to 1-1-1.

    No. 4 Fairview blanks Pine Creek

    No. 4 Fairview beat Pine Creek 2-0 to further set up Thursday’s clash with No. 1 Boulder.

    The two undefeated rivals meet Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m.

  • No. 9 Thomas Jefferson volleyball escapes ThunderRidge

    No. 9 Thomas Jefferson volleyball got by ThunderRidge on Monday, 3-2, in its first match of the season.

    The two teams switched off winning sets, with the Spartans eventually taking the game in the fifth set.

    Thomas Jefferson’s Gracey Jarecke had 31 assists and 18 digs. Siale Sandoval and Bella Williams had 18 and 16 kills in the game. Sandoval also added 17 digs of her own.

    The Spartans came back from a 25-15 loss in the fourth set to win the fifth set 15-11.

    A 26-24 win in the third set proved huge for Thomas Jefferson in their eventual 3-2 win.

  • Football roundup: Kent Denver’s Scott Yates takes sole possession of state’s wins record

    For now, Kent Denver’s Scott Yates is sitting alone atop the state’s all-time football coaching wins record.

    With the Class 3A No. 1 Sun Devils’ 59-0 win over Prospect Ridge Academy, Yates grabbed win No. 316, putting him one game ahead of West Grand’s Chris Brown.

    The Mustangs are in action next week when they travel to Sanford to open their open.

    It was Brown who set the state’s all-time wins record last year with a 32-12 win over the same Sanford team in Week 1.

    He sat two games ahead of Yates, but a deep playoff run helped the Kent Denver coach match the wins total at the end of the 2016 season.

    6-Man: North Park 31, (2) Fleming 25

    North Park held a six-point lead with less than nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but the Fleming was able to tie it but.

    But it was all for naught.

    A North Park touchdown with three seconds remaining sealed the upset victory.

    With the win, North Park should climb into the new CHSAANow.com football rankings that will be released on Labor Day weekend.

    • 5A No. 9 Highlands Ranch jumped out to a quick lead and rode it to a 53-7 win over Smoky Hill.
    • In 8-man, Soroco found itself on the winning end of a Zero Week shootout, beating Caliche 48-26.
    • Ignacio closed the gap from last year’s loss against Ellicott, but the Thunderhawks still got a 34-16 win on Saturday in 1A.
    • In one of the best games of the day, Las Animas beat Miami-Yoder 22-19 in 8-man.
