  • Lakewood joins 5A volleyball ranking at No. 6

Grandview is ranked third in this week’s 5A poll. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Here comes Lakewood. The Tigers, who knocked off then-No. 1 Doherty as part of a 6-0 week last week, joined the CHSAANow.com volleyball poll.

Lakewood is now 6-3, ranked sixth, and even received one first-place vote this week.

Doherty dropped to second this week, and was replaced by Arapahoe atop the ranking.

Lewis-Palmer continued to lead the 4A ranking, which added Montrose (No. 8).

The 3A poll got a facelift, of sorts. Manitou Springs jumped from No. 4 to No. 1, and that ranking added Olathe (No. 8), Frontier Academy (No. 9) and Fort Lupton (No. 10).

Likewise, there is a new No. 1 team in the 2A ranking: Fowler. C.S. School (No. 6), Sangre de Cristo (No. 8) and Lyons (No. 9) all joined that ranking.

The 1A poll features two new teams in No. 9 La Veta and No. 10 Rocky Mountain Lutheran.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • ThunderRidge’s passing game opens up the run in win vs. Grandview

HIGHLANDS RANCH — There is an old adage that some football coaches have always adhered to: You run to set up the pass.

On Friday evening at Shea Stadium, top-ranked ThunderRidge did exactly the opposite, and it worked in the Grizzlies’ favor. ThunderRidge came out throwing the ball early, and that success helped lead to 207 yards on the ground as the team held off No. 4 Grandview 21-7 in non-league play.

Grizzlies quarterback Brody Westmoreland completed his first six passes in the first quarter for 163 yards, but only needed 36 more yards over the final three quarters as the rushing attack took over.

Junior Matt Stanley, a fullback by trade, carried the ball 27 times for 157 yards and two scores and Tristan Powers added another touchdown on the ground.

“Not really any of the credit should go to me,” Stanley said. “It’s all my O-line. I’ve got those huge holes, all I have to do is run through them.”

ThunderRidge (3-0) put up two quick scores on the board in the first quarter and added one more on its opening drive of the third quarter. Grandview (2-1) struggled to convert on third down and was nearly shut out before quarterback Tyler Smith connected with Isaiah Lang for a 51-yard touchdown pass in the final five minutes.

“We’re a young team, especially offensively,” Wolves coach John Schultz said. “I felt our defense, holding them to 21 points, was a good effort.

“We didn’t convert drives. Our offense just has to finish drives.”

Finishing wasn’t a problem early for ThunderRidge. Playing in front of a packed house at Shea Stadium, and with the weather dry for the first time all week, Westmoreland connected with 6-foot-4 wideout Mark Hopper on passes of 33 and 25 yards on the opening drive. Powers finished things off with a 1-yard run.

Grandview had a strong opening possession of its own that stalled late and ended with a missed 45-yard field goal. Westmoreland then hit Jon Jones on a 63-yard seam down the middle, and after a 12-yard strike to Hopper, Stanley scored on a 5-yard run.

Hopper had six catches for 121 yards.

“He’s a very dangerous receiver,” ThunderRidge coach Joe Johnson said. “If you’re going to commit to play man on him, he’s going to hurt you. He did that tonight and he did that against Dakota (Ridge).”

The Wolves had a 12-play drive late in the first half, but ThunderRidge’s Collin Hankins intercepted a Smith pass in the end zone. The Grizzlies continually pounded the ball up the middle behind its big, bruising offensive line in the second half, and Stanley capped an impressive drive that included runs of 26, 13 and 24 yards with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0.

“They’re a very good football team. They can throw it and run it — they have one of the best offenses in the state,” Schultz said. “It was a challenge our defense needed.”

Smith finished 8-of-21 passing for 140 yards and the long touchdown pass to Lang to pace Grandview. Juniors Austin Quarles and Ben Marshall combined for 91 yards rushing, but the Grizzlies’ defense was persistent in swarming to the ball throughout the evening.

“We’re playing well on defense, and we have all three games,” Johnson said. “We have a lot of confidence, and if we can be a little smarter at the end of game about long passes, we’d really be tough. I just love the way we’re hustling to the ball.”

Grandview has one more non-league contest next week against Mullen before opening Centennial League play Sept. 27 against Eaglecrest. ThunderRidge plays Bear Creek next Saturday, with the big Continental League opener against Regis Jesuit coming just six days later.

Victories over Dakota Ridge, Ralston Valley and now Grandview can only help as the Grizzlies gear up for league play.

“We feel like it battle-tests us a little bit. If we can come out healthy, we’ll be better for it,” Johnson said. “That’s the plan.”

  • No football games can be rescheduled past Monday

A number of Week 3 football games have been postponed or rescheduled due to the massive rainstorms and widespread flooding across the state this week. However, no games will be allowed to be rescheduled past Monday.

Below is a statement from assistant commissioner Harry Waterman regarding the rescheduling of football games from this week’s schedule:

“Any game from this week’s schedule that was unable to be completed Thursday, Friday or Saturday may be rescheduled no later than Monday, September 16th. Sunday is not an option. In the event teams are unable to mutually agree to a Monday game, the game will go down as a ‘No Contest.’ In any situation where that happens, Wild Card points formulas for each team will be adjusted to account for one less game.  Attempting to reschedule to a later date this season would require playing three games within a 7-8 day period which is not safe.”

  • Chatfield picks up the pace in downing Dakota Ridge

LAKEWOOD — Playing as fast as possible on offensive is the current trend on the football field. It appears Chatfield’s super-charged offense might just be ahead of the curve when it comes to diversity to go along with speed.

The Chargers’ high-octane, no-huddle offense had 74 snaps Thursday night in front of Chatfield’s homecoming crowd at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood. The Chargers downed Jeffco rival Dakota Ridge 42-27 to move to 3-0 this season.

Chatfield moved into the No. 9 slot of the CHSAANow.com Class 5A football poll this week and continued its hot start on the opening drive Thursday night. The Chargers went 80 yards on 13 plays with five different receivers catching balls and four different players carrying the football. Junior quarterback Kyle Winkler capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to senior Austin Steinhoff.

“That is definitely what we want to do,” Winkler said, referring to the opening drive. “We have a lot of variety with our offense. All of our receivers are great players. It gives you the self assurance that whoever you throw the ball to they are going to make plays.”

Winkler finished the night 22-for-29 passing for 177 yards and four touchdowns. Senior Brandon Zanier led all Chargers’ receivers with six catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.

“We knew in the offseason that we had a lot of skill kids,” Chatfield coach Brett McGatlin said. “It makes it fun for the kids, which I always love.”

The Chargers needed their depth to close out the victory in the final quarter. Dakota Ridge (1-2) closed to within 28-21 early in the fourth quarter after Eagles’ quarterback Braxton Thais hooked up with senior Tucker Barr for a 24-yard touchdown. Then senior Aaron Nelson scored from one yard out after a special teams’ miscue set Dakota Ridge up at Chatfield’s 10-yardline.

Chatfield senior running back Brendan Murphy was having a huge game with 21 carries for 171 yards and a touchdown, but left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury. Winkler helped ease the pain of losing Murphy by throwing a 22-yard touchdown to Zanier the play after Murphy was helped off the field.

Dakota Ridge did answer with Nelson’s second touchdown run of the game to make the score 35-27 after a failed 2-point conversion with 5:23 left in the fourth quarter.

Senior Austin Steinhoff had a big 27-yard run on the ensuing drive for Chatfield. Junior Sean O’Dell had a 35-yard reception to put the Chargers on Dakota Ridge’s 6-yard line. O’Dell finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown catch from Winkler to seal the victory.

“It’s a rivalry game. We can see their school from our school,” McGatlin said. “(Dakota Ridge is) a good football. That’s going to be a really good 4A football team.”

Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz called the loss a “moral” victory.

“Very proud of our kids,” Woitalewicz said. “It was 28-7 and a lot of kids would fold up and get blown out. I thought our kids fought and competed all the way to the end.”

The Eagles’ two losses this year have come at the hands of 5A’s top ranked ThunderRidge (2-0) and Chatfield.

“Playing games like this will make us better and tougher when our league (play) rolls around,” Woitalewicz said.

Dakota Ridge has a pair of non-league road games against George Washington and Central of Grand Junction before diving into its 4A Plains League play.

Chatfield faces another 5A Jeffco school in Arvada West next Friday at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada before kicking off its 5A Super 6 conference schedule with Lakewood.

Valor’s women volleyball team is now 4-0 after their latest victory against Mullen.

Valor is taking charge early in the season with two wins at home and two wins on the road. Finishing the last weekend with a win, the Eagles moved onto the match against the Mullen Mustangs on Monday.

A slow start from the eagles allowed Mullen to take a strong 13-1 lead but they fought back and lost 25-20. Winning the next two sets, 25-18, 25-22, the ladies needed to win just one more set but the mustangs out-muscled them winning 28-26.

Going into the fifth game, Valor had serve and took a lead, which then let them take the fifth match 15-9 which resulted in the Eagles winning the game. T

  • Downpour of rain forces widespread postponements

    (via @ErieHSAthletics on Twitter)
    (via @ErieHSAthletics on Twitter)

A massive rainstorm has caused widespread postponements of athletic events this weekend, including a slew of games or matches on Thursday.

Most schools have moved games to next week, or later in the month, but football teams have had an especially tough time rescheduling because of the week-to-week nature of the schedule.

With that in mind, the following is a statement from Harry Waterman, assistant commissioner in charge of football:

“Regular season games are the jurisdiction of the individual schools and school districts. Because of the number of conflicts that may occur, the individual schools and school districts are responsible for making the determination on any games to be rescheduled. Sunday is not an option for games to be rescheduled per CHSAA bylaws. Teams will be allowed to reschedule games to Monday, even if it means playing two games in a week.”

So, yes, we will be getting Monday Night Football next week.

Below is a list of postponements, for all sports. Are we missing a game? Email it to rcasey@chsaa.org.
