PUEBLO — The Pueblo South football team was a combined 3-17 in 2011 and 2012. Those numbers are distant memory this season.

The resurgent Colts are 5-1, including 3-0 atop the Class 4A Foothills league, and are ranked No. 8 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A football poll. Pueblo South’s lone loss was a 17-7 defeat to Falcon on Sept. 5.

“This season has been a lot of fun,” said Pueblo South head coach Ryan Goddard, who is in his fourth season guiding the Colts. “The kids have come a long way and they have put in a lot of work. They believed in what we were teaching them and it just took off for them.”

After a slow start, Pueblo South’s offense has come alive in wins over Palmer Ridge (31-8), Mesa Ridge (40-0) and Pueblo Centennial (56-20).

Quarterback Nathan Spinuzzi has been a catalyst for the Colts. The junior has passed for 1,167 yards and eight touchdowns and he also has rushed for 428 yards and six more scores.

“We are taking care of the ball on offense,” Goddard said. “Nathan has also thrown the ball really well this year and to throw the ball well you have to have good receivers. We also have had balance with a strong running game.”

South’s top receivers are Devin Valdez (17 receptions, 373 yards), Dennis Ramos (18 receptions, 355 yards) and Isiah Pannunzio (8 receptions, 197 yards). Valdez has a team-high four touchdown catches.

“I think we have great leadership,” the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Spinuzzi said. “People believed what we could accomplish this year and last year we were just going through the motions.”

The Colts are far from one-dimensional.

Senior running back Garrett Krage has a team-best 555 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He also has 12 catches for 141 yards.

“This season is 360 degrees different from last year,” the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Krage said. “It all started with our preparation in the summer. Our seniors this year played through the 2-8 season and 1-9 season. We didn’t want to have those results again. We made sure we were good leaders. We made sure we got work done in the summer hoping it would pay off. Now that it has been paying off we need to continue to work even harder. This season feels like what football should feel like. I know as a senior I want to help our team come out on top and reach its goals.”

As good as Pueblo South’s offense has been the Colts’ defense has exceeded all expectations. It is only allowing only 9.8 points per game.

“Our defense has been playing very good, especially our defensive line,” Goddard. “We have just had a great team effort on defense and the guys are just flying around and getting after people.”

Krage is playing outside linebacker this season, and is thrilled to be part of the Colts’ swarming unit.

“We take a lot of pride in not giving up many points,” Krage said. “We have almost all our athletes playing on defense this season and that has made a big difference.”

South’s defense will have a tough test at 7 p.m. Friday when the Colts host Canon City in a huge Foothills League game at Dutch Clark Stadium. The Tigers are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league.

“Our first goal every year is to go out and win the league,” Goddard said. “Our kids know this is big game and we are just focused on what we have this week.”

Senior Mitchel Chavez, a free safety, is anxious to see what his team can accomplish against the Tigers.

“This season has been amazing,” Chavez said. “I can’t even describe how it feels. Everything has changed. Our team has been a lot more focused and determined this season, especially on defense. We have just been taking things week by week. So, our focus this week against Canon is to go 1-0.”

    Krage concurred with Chavez.

“We understand how important this game is,” Krage said. “Everybody is really up for this game and we just want to keep things rolling.”

  • CHSAA statement on arbitration hearing

Nathan Starks, a student at Cherry Creek High School, has been granted eligibility to play football immediately following a ruling by an arbitrator during a binding arbitration hearing.

LAKEWOOD — It only takes one opportunity to be victorious on the soccer field sometimes.

That was the case Monday night at Lakewood Memorial Field. Wheat Ridge (9-3, 5-0 in league) had just one shot on goal the entire night against Class 4A Jeffco League rival Evergreen (9-2, 4-1). The one scoring chance found the back of the net, giving the Farmers a 1-0 victory in the key conference matchup and extended Wheat Ridge’s winning streak to six games.

“It was a huge win for us,” Wheat Ridge junior Max Sweeney said. “Since we were two of the top three in the league we knew we needed to perform.”

Sweeney scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 45th minute. Junior Evan Graves took a direct free kick deep in Evergreen’s zone. The low shot by Graves was deflected by Sweeney and slipped past Cougars’ goalie Matt Hornbecker.

“I told them at halftime that it only takes one shot to win this game,” Wheat Ridge coach Tony Thomas said. “It went our way tonight.”

Wheat Ridge did have to hang on to its slim lead and ward off several good scoring chances by Evergreen, ranked No. 3 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A boys soccer rankings. The Farmers also had to play a man down for the final 27 minutes of the second half after Graves was issued a red card in the 53rd minute.

The Cougars had a nine-game winning streak coming in, but wasn’t able to solve Wheat Ridge senior goalie Troy Fairbanks.

“I was really stoked to get the first save of the game and kept it going from there,” Fairbanks said. “The defense did really well.”

It was the third straight shutout victory for Fairbanks and the Farmers. The experienced goalie made a handful of diving saves and was also helped out by the post and crossbar late in the second half as the Cougars nearly tied the game on a number of occasions.

“That’s soccer. I’ve been on the winning side of games like that,” Evergreen coach Peter Jeans said. “Wheat Ridge got one chance and buried it. We had many and didn’t bury any.”

Despite the first loss since Evergreen dropped its season opener to Air Academy 1-0, Jeans still has high hopes for his squad.

“It doesn’t shake my confidence in the team,” Jeans said. “I think we are a really good team and will be able to finish strong this year.”

Evergreen will attempt to bounce back when it faces Green Mountain at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Lakewood Memorial Field.

Wheat Ridge turns its attention to rival Golden (8-1-2, 4-0). The winner of the 6 p.m. game Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada will be the sole conference leader with just two league games remaining.

“We’ll work tomorrow (Tuesday) and get things set and get the ‘W’ on Wednesday,” Fairbanks said.

Palisade edged then-No. 1 Rifle last Friday after rallying from a 27-14 halftime deficit. Tuesday, Palisade is on top of CHSAANow.com’s Class 3A football poll.

The Bulldogs received all 13 first-place votes in moving up from No. 2 taking over at No. 1. Rifle dropped to third. Unbeaten Coronado, which has the most wins in the state at 7-0, is second.

The 3A ranking added Roosevelt (No. 10) this week.

In the 5A poll, Fairview has moved up to No. 2 from No. 3.

The Knights (5-0) are 5A’s lone remaining unbeaten team, and got one first-place vote. Valor Christian got the other 23 and remained atop the ranking.

Regis Jesuit is third this week, and is followed by No. 4 ThunderRidge and No. 5 Cherry Creek.

Columbine rejoined the 5A ranking at sixth after its wild win over then-No. 2 Chatfield. Chatfield dropped to seventh this week.

Arapahoe is eighth, Pomona is ninth and Cherokee Trail fell to tenth after its loss to Cherry Creek last week.

Montrose, idle last week, remained in 4A’s No. 1 spot. Monarch moved up to No. 2, and Standley Lake is No. 3 this week. That ranking added Pueblo South at No. 8 and Durango at No. 10.

  • Westminster’s North Stadium renamed 1STBANK FIELD

North Stadium is no more. Well, in name. The stadium in Westminster has been renamed 1STBANK FIELD following a naming rights agreement with Adams 12 Five Star Schools.

The agreement — $1.2 million over 10 years — includes the purchase of a new digital LED sign which will be used to “display important information related to school and district operations,” according to the district. That includes upcoming games and events at 1STBANK FIELD.

1STBANK FIELD is located at 12500 Delaware St. in Westminster, and is visible from I-25.

“The stadium itself is right off the highway. So that sign is going to be something else,” said district athletic director Ed Hartnett. “It will be absolutely visible (from the highway). Coming down from Greeley, and that area, this is basically the entrance the to Metro area, so it does receive a large amount of traffic. The sign itself is going to be interesting, as well. Being an LED sign, we’re going to eventually sell advertisements on that sign. Potential revenue will be there in the sign itself.”

It’s the latest in a recent trend of public stadiums, following Sports Authority Stadium in Parker.

“Public schools are being forced to look at revenue in different ways,” Harnett said. “It’s kind of neat and different.”

The new deal is expected to net $821,000 “after factoring costs for purchasing and installing the sign, researching and identifying corporate sponsors, and annual utilities for the sign,” according to a release from the district.

The stadium will continue to be managed, operated and owned by Adams 12 Five Star Schools. Revenue from the naming rights deal will also be used in improving the district’s other athletic facilities — Five Star Stadium and the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

“It’s going to affect our athletic sites directly, which will be good for the future,” Hartnett said.

In a statement, Mark Clark, the president of Adams 12 Five Star Schools board of education, said: “We’re fortunate to have strong partners who support student success in the Five Star District, from our parents to our staff and local businesses like FirstBank. This partnership further illustrates FirstBank’s commitment to investing in the local community.”

“We’re happy to sponsor the Five Star District and provide support to their activities and programs for all students and families,” Bob Deuschle, FirstBank’s executive vice president and North market president, said in a statement. “We’ve always been dedicated to improving local communities and public schools/school districts have been a key area of focus for our community investments and volunteering efforts. We’re proud we can support the organizations and initiatives that make Colorado a vibrant place to live.”
