Wingard leads the way in Ralston Valley football’s win over Arapahoe

Ralston Valley junior Andrew Wingard cuts upfield during the Mustangs’ 58-28 first-round Class 5A victory against Arapahoe on Friday at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada. Wingard rushed for 268 yards and three touchdowns in the win. (Dennis Pleuss) ARVADA — It was a bit of a spooky start to the Class 5A football postseason for Ralston Valley running back Andrew Wingard.
The day after Halloween, the Mustangs’ junior fumbled on his first carry Friday at the North Area Athletic Complex against No. 18-seeded Arapahoe in the first-round playoff game. Wingard would lose another fumble, but besides putting the ball on the ground twice Wingard was spectacular for No. 15-seed Ralston Valley (7-3) in the Mustangs’ 58-28 victory.
Wingard finished with 20 carries for 268 yards and a trio of touchdowns on the ground. Still, the junior first mentioned his miscues after the win.
“That’s not happening again. I haven’t fumbled all season. I don’t know what got into me. No excuses,” Wingard said. “Thankfully, we came out with the W.”

Ralston Valley senior quarterback Jacob Knipp drops back to pass as Arapahoe senior Spencer Elliot applies some pressure Friday at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada. The Mustangs scored a 58-28 home victory to advance to the second round. (Dennis Pleuss) Wingard missed sometime this season due to injury, but clearly is back to top form after his best game of the season.
“(Wingard) is doing a lot of good things for our team right now. We are going to keep giving him the ball,” said Ralston Valley senior quarterback Jacob Knipp, who had 98 yards passing, including a 29-yard touchdown strike to senior John Morales.
Ralston Valley sophomore Kyle Rush also found his way into the end zone three times for Ralston Valley. Rush finished with 59 yards on the ground on eight carries. The Mustangs piled up 402 yards on the ground.
The Mustangs even had a special teams touchdown when senior Mitchell Robinson blocked a punt and senior teammate Jon Baumann recovered the ball in the end zone.
“I’m happy with what we did offensively, defensively and on special teams,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd said. “If we clean up the mistakes I’ll be really happy.”

Arapahoe senior Ethan Brunhofer had a huge game with 11 catches for 144 yards and a touchdowns in the Warriors’ 58-28 loss to Ralston Valley on Friday. (Dennis Pleuss) The victory sets up a second-round date with defending 5A state champion and No. 2 seed Valor Christian. The Eagles scored a 63-22 victory over Eaglecrest on Friday night.
“We are well aware of what we are going up against,” Loyd said of facing Valor, which has won four straight state football titles in various classifications since 2009.
Arapahoe closed out the season with a 6-4 record. The Warriors had a quality win against eventual Super 6 League champion Columbine earlier in their conference schedule, but dropped league games against Lakewood and Chatfield before entering the playoffs.
Senior quarterback Gabe Peterson finished 19-for-30 passing for 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Peterson’s favorite target Ethan Brunhofer had a monster game. The senior hauled in 11 passing for 144 yards. His final catch was a 7-yard touchdown.

Football roundup: No. 19 Overland upsets No. 14 Rangeview in OT
Overland is headed onward in the Class 5A football playoffs thanks to an overtime victory over Rangeview.
The Trailblazers, seeded 19th, had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but a last-second interception sent the game to extra time. There, their defense held No. 14 Rangeview to a field goal before quarter Austin Conway scored on a game-winning 1-yard sneak for a 19-16 win.
We practice overtime one a week, usually on Wednesdays, and our kids were very, very used to playing overtime,” coach Seth Replogle told ColoradoPreps.com’s Built Ford Tough Scoreboard Show. “So it was real simple for us. We just said, ‘Hey, it’s just like practice. Let’s go.’ And our defense came out and played tough and shut them down.”
Prior to Overland’s possession, Replogle said, “I talked to the kids for about 30 seconds, and reminded our offense that a field goal ties, touchdown wins, don’t do anything stupid and take care of the football.”
On the Trailblazers’ first play, Ahjon White gained 9 yards to the 1.
“We called the next play pretty quick and Austin Conway saw and opening and took it, tucked it and went,” Replogle said. “It was pretty crazy. I don’t remember what happened after that. It was pandemonium.”
Overland will get No. 3 Cherry Creek in the second round, a rematch of a game on Sept. 27 which the Bruins won 20-6.
Cherry Creek beat No. 30 Lakewood in the first round, 52-12.
No. 12 Doherty grabbed a big win for its program on Friday night, 59-35 over No. 21 Gateway. It is the Spartans’ first playoff win since 2006.
“It was a big win,” Doherty coach David Joyce told the Scoreboard Show. “Our offense was on point tonight. We were throwing and catching, we were blocking, we were running, and our defense was playing pretty good.”
From 2008-12, Doherty went 9-41. The Spartans are 8-2 this season.
“We only average 181 pounds a man. We’re tiny,” Joyce said. “But these kids have been — literally, we might have one kid that plays another sport — so we have been working literally since the Monday after our last game last year all year long. Just the execution of it, the familiarity of each other and the timing.
“The kids are so invested because they’re with me everyday and just building up physically and mentally,” he added later. “Those are the keys to turning it around and getting playoff wins: just investment with teenage kids. They have to be invested.”
Doherty will face No. 5 ThunderRidge in the second round. The Grizzlies beat No. 28 Castle View 40-15.

“There were a lot of points,” Douglas County coach Jeff Ketron told the Scoreboard Show. “It was one of those deals where we were running the football quite effectively and they were throwing the football very well.”
The Huskies amassed 546 yards on the ground.
“It was the first game that we’ve had all of our offensive linemen back,” Ketron said. “We’ve been pretty nicked up and had some eligibility issues earlier this year. It was great to see all those guys back and out there playing together and I think that they really look forward to that aspect again, which they haven’t had since the Cherry Creek game.”
Douglas County gets No. 1 Fairview in the next round. The Knights easily handled No. 32 Mountain Vista, 42-7, behind Jason Harvey’s three touchdowns.
No. 7 Columbine beat No. 26 Hinkley behind its famous rushing attack, 57-27.
“I told our kids it doesn’t matter what it looks like, as long as you survive each week,” Rebels coach Andy Lowry told the Scoreboard Show. “We started slow in the first quarter, and came back on them and had a pretty decent second quarter. Then, the third quarter, they tried to kick it onside and we picked it up and ran for a touchdown. Our second-team kids did a good job and put a couple more touchdowns on the board.”
Columbine will face No. 10 Grand Junction, which beat No. 23 Westminster 32-8. Tyler Heinsma had three touchdowns.
Elsewhere in the 5A bracket, No. 8 Pomona beat No. 25 Fountain-Fort Carson, 49-30. The Panthers will face No. 9 Chatfield — a 35-12 winner over No. 24 Rocky Mountain on Thursday — in the second round.
No. 4 Regis will meet No. 20 Grandview in Round 2. Regis topped No. 29 Fort Collins 49-7, while Grandview upset No. 13 Prairie View 47-6.
Second-seeded Valor Christian didn’t have a problem with No. 31 Eaglecrest in a 63-22 win. A.J. Cecil threw for three scores, while Christian McCaffrey had five total touchdowns.
The Eagles will get No. 15 Ralston Valley following the Mustangs’ 58-28 win over No. 18 Arapahoe.
No. 6 Cherokee Trail beat No. 27 Arvada West 40-21. The Cougars will face No. 11 Mountain Range in the second round. Mountain Range beat No. 22 Heritage 24-20 for the first postseason win in school history.

Pomona survives scare from Fountain-Fort Carson in 5A football playoffs

Pomona senior Chris Marquez, far right, nearly disappears behind is massive offensive line Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex. Marquez carried the ball 40 times for 234 yards and six touchdowns in Pomona’s 49-30 victory. (Dennis Pleuss) ARVADA — Pomona senior Chris Marquez and Fountain-Fort Carson junior Charles Tigner put on a running back clinic Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.
Marquez jabbed his way through the No. 25-seeded Trojans’ defense to the tune of 234 yards and six touchdowns on 40 carries. Tigner used three touchdowns runs of 47, 57 and 70 yards to uppercut the Panthers’ defense for 205 yards on 15 carries.

Fountain-Fort Carson senior Ben Deis, left, makes a leaping grab in front of Pomona defenders Colin Pratt (24) and Jack Sale (21) during the first-round playoff game Friday in Arvada. (Dennis Pleuss) “We were just throwing punches back and fourth,” said Marquez, who has over 1,900 yards on the ground and 25 rushing touchdowns on the season. “We finally got up on our feet and got the victory.”
In the end, No. 8 Pomona clawed out a 49-30 victory to advance into the second round. The Panthers (8-2 record) will face another Jeffco school in No. 9 Chatfield (8-2) either Friday or Saturday next week at the NAAC.
Pomona coach Jay Madden admitted the Panthers’ first-round Class 5A playoff game was a little wilder than he would have liked. Fountain-Fort Carson senior Ben Deis returned the opening kickoff 95 yards to give the Trojans an early lead.
After the first of six touchdowns by Marquez, the Trojans scored on an 85-yard touchdown run by junior Drew Harris on Fountain-Fort Carson’s first offensive play from scrimmage.
“As soon as we saw Fountain-Fort Carson, we knew they had speed,” Madden said.
While the Trojans used their speed to break long scoring plays, the Panthers fed the ball to their beast — their 5-foot-5 and 155-pound running back.
“(Marquez) is carrying the load. No doubt about it,” Madden said. “He knows he can do it for as many weeks as we can find ways to win.”

Fountain-Fort Carson junior Charles Tigner sprints toward the end zone on a 57-yard touchdown run in the first half Friday night against Pomona. Tigner had 15 carries for 205 yards and three touchdowns in what was the Trojans’ season finale. (Dennis Pleuss) It was the fifth straight game Marquez has had 30-plus carries and was his fourth 200-yard game of the season. The six touchdowns was a season high.
“Offensive line did a great job tonight,” Marquez said. “There were cutbacks on every play.”
Seniors Lukas Russell and Chris Benefiel also got involved in Pomona’s ground attack. The two combined for 23 carries for 127 yards. Quarterback Justin Roberts was a perfect 7-for-7 passing for 107 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Isaac Marquez late in the third quarter.
“(Robert’s) accuracy and poise in the pocket is making a huge difference,” Madden said.
Fountain-Fort Carson had actually closed to 35-30 midway through the third quarter, but a pair of late third-quarter touchdowns gave the Panthers some breathing room.
The Trojans closed their season with a 4-6 record.
“We came in pretty confident. We played our hearts out tonight,” Tigner said. “We couldn’t stop Pomona’s running game. We’ll work on that for next year.”
Fountain-Fort Carson will return several key juniors, including Tigner, Harris and quarterback DJ Leatimua.

Pomona senior Gus Karr (11) is able to stop Fountain-Fort Carson junior Drew Harris for a short gain Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada. The Panthers pulled out a 49-30 victory in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs. (Dennis Pleuss) -
