  • Mestas focused coming into final 3A state wrestling tourney

DENVER — Last year’s Class 3A state wrestling tournament is in the past for Dolores Huerta senior Jared Mestas.

“It’s just a totally a new year. Leave it in the past. What happened, happened,” Mestas said after a second-period pin of The Classical Academy junior Charles Baker in the opening round Thursday at Pepsi Center in the 132-pound bracket. “I’ve got to focus on what I need to do the next few days.”

What happened last state tournament is something Mestas has clearly learned from and now has in the rear-view mirror.

“I’ve been training and working hard for this moment,” Mestas said. “Working hard on my grades too. You can’t wrestle without grades. You can’t go to college without grades.”

After claiming the 3A 126-pound state title as a sophomore in 2012, Mestas came to Pepsi Center last year as the top seed at 138. However, an unexpected loss in the quarterfinals to Hotchkiss senior Jesse Head ended his dream of becoming a two-time state champion. Mestas had to settle for fourth place in 2013.

Mestas has changed his approach this season after failing to repeat. He has friends film every match he wrestles and go over them frame-by-frame to learn from his mistakes. Having a good mental preparation is a key for Mestas to win his second state title in his final shot.

“I’ve got to keep my mind focused on what I need to do,” Mestas said.

There are seven wrestlers in 3A who are attempting to stake claim to a second state title. All had no problem getting through to the quarterfinals that begin 10 a.m. Friday morning.

One of those looking to return to the top of the podium is Centauri senior Jason Buhr. The four-time state qualifier has run the entire scale of emotions during his previous three state appearances.

Buhr placed sixth as a freshman at 135. Had to settle for runner-up at 145 as a sophomore before joining the ranks as a state champion last year winning at 152 in 3A.

“A little more pressure,” Buhr said of being a defending state champion. “I just want to repeat for sure.”

Buhr enters his final trip to state as top seed at 152. He scored a 17-2 technical fall over Faith Christian senior Clark Kelly in his opening match Thursday.

Buhr’s teammate, senior Jereb Aziz, is one of only two undefeated 3A wrestlers entering the state tournament. Aziz improved his unblemished record to 45-0 with a pin in 59 seconds against The Classical Academy sophomore Will Campos in the opening round at 195.

“I just push myself. I really don’t care what record I have,” said Aziz, who won the 182 title last year. “It’s 0-0 now. I just go hard as soon as I step on the mat.”

Olathe senior Trenton Piatt (32-0 record) is the other undefeated 3A wrestler. Piatt pinned his first-round opponent in 33 seconds.

In the team race, the goal is to see who can dethrone three-time defending state champion Alamosa. After the opening round Lamar (29 points), Valley (27 points) and Centauri (26.5) put themselves in good position.

Valley senior Jackson Wright comes in as the top seed at 170 with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Wright lost in the semifinals at 152 before taking third.

“It’s been a long time,” Wright said of waiting for state. “This tournament for me, besides being my last, is pretty much to avenge that loss.”

Wright, along with teammates Ruben Lucero (126), Omar Sotelo (138), Macoy Flanagan (145), Zac Miller (152) and Brendan Gonzales (160) spearheads a strong Valley Vikings contingent that is favored to win the 3A team title.

“It’s been in the back of our heads,” Wright said about going in as the favorite. “What we can do as individuals will give us our team points.”

  • Top wrestlers in 2A field survive and advance to quarterfinals

DENVER — Prelims of state wrestling are about survive and advance. On Thursday afternoon at the Pepsi Center, Class 2A’s returning state champions, followed this method to a T.

On an opening day where every top two favorite in each weight class advanced, according to On The Mat’s Tim Yount, the brackets were chalk with few upsets. Johnny Loflin, Jesse Reed, T.J. Shelton, and Seth Harrington, the returning crown winners, were dominant in their opening matches.

Baca County’s senior, Loflin — the defending 195 pound champion who is built like a grown man and wrestles like one, too — pinned Jusiv Edwards of Sierra Grande in a mere 20 seconds and walked off the mat quickly and confidently with an eye towards the quarterfinals.

Reed of Paonia, a junior and two-time state champ, moved to 37-0 this season with a 25-second pin of Joma’s Isaiah Sandoval. He was equally impressive as Loflin.

Meeker’s Shelton, winner of the 160-pound class as only a freshman last year, also made quick work of his opponent at 170 with a pin of Yuma’s Justin Leth in 2:43.

Shelton’s coach, JC Watt, was pleased with how aggressively he attacked his opening match and said that Shelton has been strong throughout the season.

“He’s had a good season,” Watt said. “He’s only lost twice. He lost to a kid that’s nationally ranked from Utah and then he just got caught once. He was beating a kid handily, but just got caught once. Other than that, he’s beaten most of his opponents pretty soundly.”

Harrington, a senior state champion in the 132-pound weight class in 2013, is wrestling in the 138-pound division this year for Sedgwick County/Fleming. Harrington moved to 26-3 with a two minute and fifty nine second pin of Swink’s Dominic Gregory.

“It went well,” said Todd Harrington, Seth’s father and the coach at Sedgwick County/Fleming. “He came out as he should have. He got the good takedown and then went to work. He faced a pretty long and lanky kid from Swink and Seth finished pretty well.”

Coach Harrington is confident in his son’s chances, but knows the road to a second consecutive state title won’t be easy.

“The (Ryan) Nordyke kid from Holly is good and then the (J.C.) Henderson kid (from Meeker) and the (Jose) Chavez kid (from Center),” he said. “(Seth) had (Henderson) in the semifinals last year. I think the Chavez kid grew over the summer and was a 120-pounder last year. Those are the three kids that could give him some trouble.”

Harrington is once again in position to contend for the title, but his season hasn’t come without its challenges.

“He started off slow,” said his coach. “He broke his hand early in November when we started practice, so he was out until after Christmas. After Christmas, he came back and has been wrestling pretty well. We bumped him up a weight a couple times.

“All in all, it’s been a pretty good year,” Harrington added. “I think he would like to have those first three weeks back, those first three tournaments of 2013, but we sat him out to let that hand heal up and got him back after it after Christmas.”

Paonia, the two-time defending champs and heavy favorites for their third consecutive crown, are off to a rock solid start with 32 points, eight points ahead of second place Meeker and Norwood with 24 each. Sedgwick County/Fleming is fourth with 21 points and Ignaco and Swink are tied for fifth at 20.

It will take a major upset for the Paonia Eagles to be unseated from their perch at the 2A throne, but Baca County, Sedgwick County/Fleming and Meeker have strong teams and could perhaps challenge Paonia if chips fall in place for them.

The story of Thursday at the Pepsi Center for 2A’s wrestlers was survive and advance. Loflin, Reed, Shelton, and Harrington were able to achieve this and advance to Friday’s quarterfinals as they each seek another individual state title.

Friday’s quarterfinals and semifinals promise to be another testament to the survive and advance method as the stakes get higher and the spectacle that is the Colorado state wrestling tournament will become more pressure-filled.

  • First female to qualify for 5A state wrestling wins first match, seeks to place

DENVER — Denver East’s Maya Nelson began her 5A regional wrestling bracket proving she was not going to be a pushover. In fact, she was going to be the one doing the pushing.

Nelson, a junior, outscored her opponents 29-0 en route the finals of her bracket. Her luck would run out there, but considering she had just become the first female wrestler to qualify for the state championship bracket in 5A, she certainly had momentum on her side.

She used every bit to make history again as she defeated Carl Camposanto from Regis Jesuit to also become the first 5A girl to win a match. Nelson said afterward that her goal is to get to the podium and seems confident that she will be able to achieve that goal — something that she hadn’t quite been able to do in her first two years.

“I was always close and that really broke my heart,” Nelson said. “To be right there and not be able to advance to state was heartbreaking, so I put in a lot more work over the summer, wrestling year-round and I’m finally here.”

Nelson’s victory was a far cry from the decisive matches she had in her regional bracket. Early in the match she had to be briefly treated for a bloody nose and even found herself down 2-1 after the first period. She didn’t let herself get frustrated and instead was able to even the score a four points apiece heading into the third and final period.

It was there that she went on the attack, earning the victory with a 13-9 decision over Camposanto. The win puts her one step closer to her goal of becoming the first girl in the history of Colorado wrestling to place at the state championships.

“(Getting to the podium) has always been my goal,” she said. “I’m just taking it one match at a time and going out there and doing my best.”

Her best is the result of extra hours of training beyond what she can get through the wrestling program at Denver East. On top of the work she puts in with her team, she spends time training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in the offseason and also works at RiNo Sport Galleri.

Her extra effort has paid off and allowed her to keep up with the guys that wrestle in her division and weight class. The results are showing that she is no just a good story, but a legitimate threat on the mat, as well.

She fell in love with the sport after spending time with her dad Joshua, who was a wrestling coach. After she became interested in the sport she began to study the technique of Adeline Gray, a Denver native that went on to win the gold medal at the 2012 World Championships in Strathcona County, Alberta.

“Ever since I saw her wrestle, I saw how phenomenal she was,” Nelson said. “I want to be just like her.”

If Nelson keeps up her current pace she could very easily end up being better than Gray. But as she said, she just needs to take it one match at a time. Her next opponent is Pine Creek’s Juan Rodriguez. That match will happen during the 4A/5A quarterfinal session which starts at 12:45 p.m. Friday.

For now, Nelson’s first victory was at least noticed by another record-setter in Colorado wrestling. Brooke Sauer, the first girl to ever qualify for the state tournament back in 2006 from Golden, was in attendance.

  • Thompson Valley, Pueblo South make moves in 4A wrestling team race

DENVER — For some observers, this match wasn’t highlighted Thursday night at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament.

However, there was plenty at stake when Pueblo South’s Davis Baxter and Thompson Valley’s Sage D’Ambrosia met in the first round at the Pepsi Center — especially in the team race.

Broomfield, Thompson Valley and Pueblo South were ranked No. 1, 2, and 3 by On The Mat prior to the state tournament.

“Our focus right now is bringing home a team title,” said the senior Baxter about the Colts who won state in 1997, 2004 and 2005.

Baxter did his part by muscling past D’Ambriosa 4-2.

“We know all the head-to-head matches with Thompson Valley are very important because they have more guys qualified than us,” said the unranked Baxter after his win over No. 6-ranked D’Ambrosia . “I’m just glad I was able to come through.”

The Colts’ Mitchel Chavez also scored a dramatic 6-5 win over Thompson Valley’s David Eusea. Chavez had a five-point move in the last 20 seconds to get the win.

Defending champion Broomfield qualified 11 wrestlers for state, while Thompson Valley brought 12 and South nine.

Thompson Valley is leading the team chase with 25 points followed by Pueblo South and Windsor which are tied for second with 22 points. Broomfield is sixth with 18 points.

Thompson Valley and South both advanced eight wrestlers and Broomfield had six winners.

In the Baxter-D’Ambrosia match, neither wrestler could get anything going in the first period.

The match remained scoreless until Baxter hit a reversal to take a 2-0 lead with two seconds left in the second period.

Baxter knew his lead wasn’t safe and he was right.

D’Ambrosia answered with a reversal of his own to tie the match at 2-2 with 1:22 left in the third period.

“At South, we focus a lot on conditioning and in the third period I still had a lot left in me and I was able to get the job done,” said Baxter, who ran his season record to 31-13.

Baxter’s takedown at 1:10 of the third put him up 4-2.

“There was a lot scrambling out there and I was getting mixed up with the score,” Baxter said.

D’Ambrosia (33-12) also was lost in the moment.

“I was trying to take him down and he got a funky (two-point) nearfall,” D’Ambrosia said. “I knew after that I had to go after it and try and score some points.”

As the clock was ticking down, Baxter was clinging to his slim advantage.

“In those last seconds I looked at the clock and saw I was winning and I knew I had to avoid getting turned and not give up anything easy,” Baxter said.

    D’Ambrosia was gracious in defeat.

“I was trying to take him down and I just ran out of time,” he said.

TURNING SOME HEADS: Berthoud’s Nate Ryken thought his wrestling season was over before regionals last weekend.

“I didn’t even think I was going to wrestle,” said Ryken, who was hampered by a dislocated left elbow injury. “My coaches told me to go out there and give it my all before I stopped my senior year. I went out there and gave it my all and I took fourth.”

That effort qualified Ryken for state and he took full advantage of the opportunity by stunning Broomfield’s Demetruis Zissimos with a third-period pin.

Zissimos (5-1), who was coming back from a broken leg he suffered during football season, was the only undefeated wrestler in all of the 4A brackets.

“I had never wrestled him before,” Ryken said. “I don’t look at the person if they are good or bad. I’m going in how I’m going to go in and I’m going to fight. I feel like this win shows heart and my work ethic and now I’m just going to take one match at a time and wrestle my butt off.”

Ryken improved his record to 16-5 after his pin with 1:19 left in the third period.

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONS MOVE ON: Broomfield’s Phil Downing and Zach Stodden, Weld Central’s Dalton Robertson, Palisade’s Dalton Harrington, Pueblo South’s Isaac Naro, Windsor’s Kennen Lanteri, and Mead’s Kyle Couch all won their first-round matches Thursday.

EYEING GOLD: A year ago, Montezuma-Cortez’s Seager Oliver advanced to the 160-pound Class 4A state finals only to get upended by Thompson Valley’s Francisco Marquez.

Now, a junior, Oliver is more determined than ever to capture a coveted gold medal.

Oliver, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 170 pounds, made a quick statement Thursday night, scoring a 15-0 technical fall over Woodland Park’s Josh Smith.

“I’ve had several tech falls and several pins this season,” said Oliver, who ran his record to 38-2. “I approach every match the same and I treat every match like I’m wrestling the No. 1 guy in state. I never let up and I don’t overlook anybody. The first match is always the worst and I’m glad I got that one over, and I’m happy with the way I wrestled.”

Oliver has a simple plan for the rest of the weekend.

“I just have to go out there and be mean every match and not give them an edge,” Oliver said.

Shad Bellmire, Montezuma-Cortez’s coach, likes Oliver’s approach.

“He’s got the attitude that he wants that gold and he’s headed in that direction,” Belmire said. “He’s worked hard and pushed himself and he has that gold medal in mind.”

Oliver is trying to become Montezuma-Cortez’s first state champion since 2010 when Casey Lynn won state at 135 pounds in Class 4A.

DENVER — It’s not exactly a common scenario for a defending state champion to be flying under the radar, but Coronado junior Jess Hankin may be doing exactly that.

One year after capturing the Class 5A state title at 113 pounds, Hankin is ranked third at 126 pounds, the only 5A division to feature another defending champion in Cherry Creek’s Mitch Finesilver.

That’s why Hankin, who kicked off his 2014 state tournament Thursday night at Pepsi Center by pinning Aurora Central’s Jonnathan Quijada in three minutes, 44 seconds, isn’t necessarily feeling the pressure that often comes with defending a title.

“It’s really more motivation, especially seeing as how I was ranked third all year,” Hankin said. “It gives me a goal to work up to. I’m not the No. 1 guy, so it takes a lot of the pressure off as well.”

Finesilver, who captured the 120-pound title as a junior, opened with an 11-1 major decision over Chaparral’s Dawson Cranmer. Ponderosa’s Kade Snider, the No. 2-ranked wrestler at 126, also advanced with a 7-2 decision over Fruita Monument’s Ian Konrad.

Hankin led 9-2 in the second period of his match before securing the fall.

“It’s not an ‘if-you-win.’ It’s a definite win,” Hankin said. “It’s not so much a confidence booster as it is just nice to get it out of the way.”

That sentiment was a common one among the wrestlers Thursday. Each of the defending champions moved on to Friday morning’s quarterfinals, including two-time state champion P.T. Garcia at 132. The senior scored a technical fall of 22-7 over Liberty’s Grady Brewster.

Grand Junction’s Jacob Trujillo (160), Ponderosa’s Dylan Gab el (182) and Regis Jesuit’s Grant Neal (220) also moved forward. Mountain Range’s Jorge Rodriguez (285), a 2012 state champion, needed only 19 seconds to notch a pin and advance.

Arvada West sent eight of its 11 qualifiers into the quarterfinals to take the team lead with 24 points after the first day. Pine Creek, which advanced seven, is second with 21 points and Ponderosa is third with 19 points.

No Wildcat was happier to be moving on than Taylor Bergquist. The junior had lost his opening match at state in overtime in each of his first two years, but Bergquist handled Ponderosa’s Tyler Turco with a 10-2 major decision at 152 pounds.

“It was really disappointing. It’s heart-breaking,” he said of his previous state experiences. “It feels good this year to get the first one out of the way.”

Bergquist moves on to face Boulder’s Martin Selby on Friday morning. His major decision helped to give the Wildcats an edge, especially considering it came against Ponderosa, which also sent 11 to state.

“It’s a big boost. Any extra points you can get helps,” Bergquist said. “Ponderosa’s a tough team, and we’re tough too.”

Legacy’s Ryan Deakin, who is undefeated this season, kept his perfect record intact with a lightning-quick pin of Rangeview’s Dominic Wenger in 28 seconds at 113 pounds.

“It’s good to get that out of the way,” Deakin said, “but there’s still a lot of wrestling to be done.”

It seemed almost anticlimactic to wait all day to wrestle only to spend 28 seconds on the mat, but Deakin didn’t view it that way.

“Every time I go out there I’m just trying to go out there and dominate the kid,” Deakin said. “I turned him, so it worked out. Sometimes it doesn’t.”

Among the other highlights from the first round included Finesilver’s three brothers joining him in the quarterfinals. Zach Finesilver notched a victory by pin at 138 pounds, and sophomore twins Josh (106) and Matt (113) also advanced.

Denver East’s Maya Nelson, the first female to ever qualify for the 5A state tourney, notched a victory with a 13-9 decision at 120 pounds.
