LITTLETON — Dakota Ridge’s hoopsters Jake Jones and Devante Jones aren’t related, but they provided the 1-2 punch Wednesday night.

The Eagles’ Joneses combined for 30 points to propel Dakota Ridge (16-6, 11-4 in league) to a 52-48 home victory against Ralston Valley in Class 5A Jeffco League boys basketball action. Senior Jake Jones poured in a game-high 19 points, including four 3-pointers in the second half.

“Jake has been a sparkplug for us a number of times. That is exactly what it was tonight,” Dakota Ridge coach Curi Yutzy said. “He knocked down a couple of shots and got after it defensively. He played very well tonight.”

Facing a double-digit deficit in the second quarter, Yutzy called on sophomore Devante Jones to try to slow down Ralston Valley’s 6-foot-9 sophomore Dallas Walton. Walton had is way on the inside scoring nine points midway through the second quarter.

Walton was as much of a factor in the second half. He finished with 13 points for the Mustangs (16-6, 11-4).

“(Devante Jones) stepped up big,” Jake Jones said. “He is usually good on the defensive end blocking shots and he is long. I think he was a perfect matchup against Dallas. He did an awesome job.”

The Eagles cut Ralston Valley’s lead to 24-19 at halftime. The Mustangs scored the first three points of the second half, but Dakota Ridge broke out offensive with a 15-0 run.

Dakota Ridge junior Cody Pittman capped off the scoring barrage with a 3-pointer with 2:16 left in the third quarter, giving the Eagles a 34-27 lead.

“Halftime we thought it was going to be a rough one, but we came out fired up in the second half,” Jake Jones said. “We got on a roll and started knocking down shots.”

Ralston Valley on the other hand went cold offensively. The Mustangs scored just eight points in the third quarter and struggled from the free-throw line in the second half.

“We were actually 1-for-11 at one stretch at the free-throw line,” Ralston Valley coach Mitch Conrad said. “That turned the game right there. That was the ballgame.”

Behind senior Bryn Finnefrock (team-high 14 points), the Mustangs cut the Eagles’ lead to 52-50 in the final seconds.

“(Finnefrock) is a senior and a captain. He has been playing varsity for three years,” Conrad said. “That is what you expect from him. He did a good job for us.”

Ralston Valley closed a late deficit in its first meeting against Dakota Ridge on Jan. 21. The Mustangs came from behind to force overtime and eventually won 66-62. Dakota Ridge refused to make the same mistakes it did the first time around with Ralston Valley.

Jake Jones sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 6.6 seconds left, giving the Eagles the four-point win.

“(Ralston Valley) is battle tested and makes plays in situations like that. They did again tonight,” said Yutzy, who pointed out that the Mustangs had a record of 7-1 in games decided by four points or less coming in. “The good thing is we’ve been in a good amount of those games ourselves. Our guys did a great job of making plays and taking care of the ball for the most part.”

Dakota Ridge finishes up conference play also on the road. The Eagles travel to Lakewood for a 7 p.m. tipoff Friday. A win would allow the Eagles at least earn a share of second-place in 5A Jeffco with Ralston Valley. It would also have Dakota Ridge on a three-game winning streak.

“We are going to be on a roll and go deep into the tournament, hopefully,” Jake Jones said.

Chatfield (18-4, 13-2) clinched back-to-back conference titles Wednesday night with a 68-61 victory over Arvada West.

Ralston Valley wraps up its regular-season schedule with a road game against rival A-West at 7 p.m. Friday.

The brackets for the 5A state tournament will be released Sunday. First-round postseason games will be played Feb. 26.

Wheat Ridge announces Reardon as new coach

In a release sent over email on Tuesday, Wheat Ridge officially announced that former Poudre coach Dan Reardon will head the Farmers’ football program.

Reardon, 5-14 over the past two seasons at Poudre, has a long history of coaching. Included was a seven-year stint at Ursuline High School in Ohio, where he was 68-26 and won three state championships. From 2007-10, Reardon’s teams went 53-6. This past year, Ursuline, a private catholic school, had an enrollment of 507 kids.

“Dan Reardon is a man of quality character and quality football knowledge and experience,” Wheat Ridge said in a statement. “He is an excellent role model that will help develop character and leadership with our students and athletes.  He will be an asset to Wheat Ridge High School.”

Reardon replaces Reid Kahl, who had a very successful nine seasons at the school, including 4A championships in 2006 and 2008 and a runner-up finish in 2010. Kahl was 85-24.

    Football adds targeting rule

Dangerous hits will be further penalized in high school football.

The NFHS last week added a targeting rule, meaning hits that take “aim and (intiate) contact to an opponent above the shoulders with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulders,” will be penalized by a 15-yard penalty.

The change was made “in an effort to reduce contact above the shoulders and lessen the risk of injury,” according to a release from the NFHS.

The NFHS rules committee also added the following definition of a defenseless player: “A defenseless player is a player who, because of his physical position and focus of concentration, is especially vulnerable to injury.”

Additionally, the committee limited the number of players that can line up on each side of the kicker during a kickoff, which should help avoid injury — especially in onside kick situations.

WESTMINSTER — One checked-off goal for Lakewood’s girls basketball team was worn on postgame t-shirts Tuesday night.

Each Lakewood player sported a Class 5A Jeffco League championship t-shirt as they exited Standley Lake High School. The Tigers (21-1, 15-0 in league) officially clinched the conference title with a 56-37 victory against Standley Lake.

“It means the world to me,” Lakewood senior captain Jessica Brooks said. “When I first came in we didn’t win very much. Now we have just lost one. It just feels so awesome that we won (league) my senior year.”

It’s the first girls hoops conference title for Lakewood since winning 5A Jeffco in 2008. Ralston Valley had won the 5A Jeffco League four times over the past five seasons, including three in a row before the Tigers cemented themselves as the class of the conference this season.

“It means so much from where we were four years ago, winning three games, to winning a league championship,” Lakewood coach Chris Poisson said. “It’s extremely special. This group is special.”

Lakewood struggled to a 3-20 record during its 2009-10 campaign, Poisson’s second year coaching the Tigers. Lakewood, No. 3 in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings, has now reeled off back-to-back 20-plus win seasons.

However, the Tigers aren’t done yet.

“Our focus is to get a good seed. Get some home games for the playoffs. Hopefully make it to the Denver Coliseum,” said Brooks, who scored a game-high 23 points Tuesday. “We are just so pumped and ready to handle what is coming at us.”

Standley Lake gave Lakewood all it could handle in the first half. The Gators (8-13, 4-11) actually were tied 19-19 at halftime.

Juniors Caylie Hartman (13 points) and Casey Torbet (eight points) kept the Gators competitive against the Tigers, who have won 10 straight since losing a non-league game Jan. 13 against Castle View.

“It was a good first half. We followed our game plan, stuck with it,” Standley Lake coach Denise Lopez said. “We played with a lot of confidence.”

After struggling with its perimeter shooting in the first half, getting the ball to Brooks and sophomore McKenna Bishop in the paint was the offensive focus in the third quarter. Brooks and Bishop combined for 13 points in the third.

“Jess (Brooks) was huge,” Poisson said. “She said, ‘I was taking over the boards.’ Standley was so physical. Good thing for Jess. That gave us the lift.”

The Tigers went on a 16-0 run in the third quarter to get some distance between the upset-minded Gators.

“The first half our intensity was just so low,” Brooks said. “After halftime we came out strong and that is what’s important. We had to pound it down low.”

Lakewood sophomore Mackenzie Forrest found her shooting touch in the second half. Forrest finished with 20 points, just over her season average of 19.4 coming into the second to last game of the regular season.

The Tigers will close out their regular season on the road against Dakota Ridge at 7 p.m. Friday.

Lakewood will find out what seed it will be for the state tournament on Sunday, when the 5A state brackets are released.

Standley Lake finishes off its regular season at 5:30 p.m. Friday with a home game against Pomona. The Gators are hoping their young squad will see their name in the bracket come Sunday.

“We do have a lot of young girls who are getting good experience against good teams,” Lopez said. “To see what this level looks like and what it takes is good for us.”

  • Lactose intolerance and athletes

    western-dairy-milk

Gluten-intolerant, salt-intolerant and lactose-intolerant are all becoming very popular terms in the food world. While these conditions often lead people to eliminate or strictly limit their intake of particular food ingredients, there is some good news for those who think they may be lactose intolerant. You still can safely drink milk, nature’s perfect sports drink, after exercise to rehydrate, refuel and rebuild?

What is Lactose Intolerance? People with lactose intolerance have trouble breaking down lactose, the natural sugar in milk. The body naturally produces the enzyme lactase, which is responsible for breaking down lactose into digestible parts. Lactose intolerance is a very individualized condition because every person produces different amounts of lactase. When people consume more lactose than their body’s lactase is capable of breaking down, they may experience stomachaches, gas or even diarrhea. The good news is, lactose intolerance is not an allergy and most people can learn how to enjoy dairy foods without having any problems.

Tips for Enjoying Dairy as a Refuel Beverage Even with Lactose Intolerance

For athletes, fluid, carbohydrates and easily absorbable proteins are all key to post-exercise recovery. Both white and chocolate milk provide fluid and electrolytes to rehydrate, carbohydrates to replenish and easily absorbable proteins that, in combination, serve as the perfect post-workout snack. How do you enjoy the health benefits of dairy’s nutrition if you have trouble breaking down lactose?

    • Remember: A doctor is the only person who can accurately diagnose you with lactose intolerance. If you are experiencing undesirable digestive symptoms, it is important to check with a physician to make sure you are not suffering from a more serious condition.  Even if you are diagnosed with lactose intolerance, many doctors will still recommend that you continue to include dairy foods in your diet because of dairy’s health benefits, but to do so by choosing the right foods and correct portions.
    • Dairy foods contain differing amounts of lactose. Fluid milk has by far the most lactose, whereas many hard cheeses have less than 1 gram of lactose per serving. Yogurt for example, is often easier for people to digest because it not only contains less lactose than milk, but it also contains live and active cultures that can improve digestion.
    • If you have lactose intolerance, try these tips for choosing dairy foods post exercise:
      • Sip It: Build up a tolerance to milk. Some people can enjoy smaller portions of milk and slowly increase the amount over a few weeks to avoid intolerance. Remember that one cup of milk is a serving. For some people, a tall glass may cause intolerance issues.
      • Try It: Try lactose-free products. Lactaid milk for example is real milk and provides the same nutritional value as regular milk, it simply contains added lactase enzyme that allows those with less naturally produced lactase to enjoy the milk.
      • Blend It: Fruit smoothies with non-fat yogurt or lactose free milk contain the electrolytes, fluid, carbohydrates and protein that your body needs after a workout and is easily digestible for most people.
      • Make It Easy: Look for lactase enzyme pills at your drugstore. Take a pill with your first sip of refreshing milk after exercise.

Athletes can train harder and perform better with proper nutrition. Visit WesternDairyAssociation.org to read more about milk as an exercise recovery beverage and learn how to eat for peak athletic performance.

  • Denver East narrowly holds onto top spot in 5A boys basketball ranking

With one week to go in the regular season, Fossil Ridge nearly overtook Denver East atop the Class 5A basketball rankings.

    Nearly.

The SaberCats remained in the No. 2 spot despite the fact that both schools received 10 first-place votes. Denver East, though, held on to its top ranking by one overall point.

The Angels have been No. 1 all season, save for one week in mid-January when Fossil Ridge led the poll.

Mountain Vista stayed put at No. 3 this week, and continued to be followed by No. 4 Regis Jesuit and No. 5 Eaglecrest.

Overland bumped up on place to No. 6, while Highlands Ranch went from No. 10 to No. 7 after going 2-0 last week.

Arapahoe dropped two spots to No. 8, Rangeview is the poll’s lone newcomer at No. 9, and Grand Junction rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

The Centennial and Continental leagues both have three teams in the top-10 this week. The Denver Prep, Front Range and East Metro and Southwestern all have one ranked team.

Elsewhere, the 1A poll has a new No. 1 team. Hi-Plains took over for Caliche after receiving eight of the 11 first-place votes in that class. Hi-Plains went 3-0 last week, while Caliche went 1-2, though both losses were to ranked 2A teams.

That ranking added No. 9 Cheraw and No. 10 Briggsdale.
