AURORA — Chatfield, Montrose and Eaton are the top seeds in their respective classifications for baseball’s district rounds.

The 32-team fields for 5A, 4A and 3A were released on Wednesday. In 4A and 5A, seeds were determined in large part by the final Wild Card point standings. Class 3A has a seeding committee.

The district format has the top eight seeds in each classification hosting four-team pods. Each district will play three games this Saturday, with the championship at 3 p.m. Winners of each district move on to their respective state tournaments.

Chatfield had been at the head of 5A’s Wild Card points for much of the season. The Chargers will host No. 32 Doherty, No. 16 Pine Creek and No. 17 Central (G.J.).

Regis Jesuit got 5A’s No. 2 seed, Fairview is No. 3, Columbine is No. 4 and Mountain Vista is No. 5. Also hosting districts are No. 6 Arvada West, No. 7 Rocky Mountain and No. 8 Cherry Creek.

See the full 5A brackets here.

Like Chatfield, Montrose has been atop 4A’s Wild Card points most of the year. The Indians are set to host No. 32 Coronado in the first round. No. 16 Erie and No. 17 Palmer Ridge will play in that district’s other first-round game.

4A’s other district hosts are No. 2 Windsor, No. 3 Valor Christian, No. 4 Delta, No. 5 Pueblo East, No. 6 Wheat Ridge, No. 7 Durango and No. 8 Evergreen.

See the full 4A brackets here.

Eaton heads the 3A field. The Reds draw No. 32 Denver Science & Tech in the first round, and will also host No. 16 St. Mary’s and No. 17 Brush in their district.

Also hosting in 3A are No. 2 Holy Family, No. 3 Faith Christian, No. 4 Lamar, No. 5 Bayfield, No. 6 Cedaredge, No. 7 Sterling and No. 8 Alamosa.

See the full 3A brackets here.

2A’s state bracket is due out Sunday. The 1A regional and state tournament kicks off on Saturday.

  • Photos: ThunderRidge girls soccer upsets Legacy in 5A girls soccer

BROOMFIELD — ThunderRidge, seeded No. 21 in the Class 5A girls soccer tournament, upset No. 12 Legacy on Tuesday night.

Kayla Hill and Riley Welch scored eight minutes apart in the first half. Welch also had an assist.

    Kelsey Killean scored for Legacy.

  • Photos: Tasker’s two goals lead Grandview girls soccer over Regis Jesuit

AURORA — No. 14-seeded Grandview topped No. 19 Regis Jesuit 3-1 to open the Class 5A girls soccer playoffs on Tuesday.

Brooke Tasker had two goals, and Maddie Rodriguez added a goal and two assists for the Wolves.

Maddie Lesjak made eight saves in the win.

  • Statement on 5A baseball playoffs

A mistake in the MaxPreps Wild Card feed in 5A created a situation where a change in qualifiers was required.

A discrepancy in the counting of a loss for an out of state opponent for Mullen was discovered after the bracket had been published. The loss occurred after the established May 3 cutoff date and the loss should not have factored in the final numbers for Mullen.

In correcting those numbers, it was apparent that Mullen, not Douglas County had earned the final at-large playoff spot. Both schools had met all deadlines and did what was required. In staying true to the format as established by the membership, a change in qualifiers was made.

This was a system issue that has now been corrected.

  • Photos: Rocky Mountain baseball wins crucial late-season game vs. ThunderRidge

HIGHLANDS RANCH — Rocky Mountain beat ThunderRidge 9-7 on Monday, giving the Lobos a crucial late-season win that could help secure a district hosting seed when the pairings on released on Wednesday.

ThunderRidge led 6-0 after the second inning, but Rocky Mountain rallied — including a six-run fourth — for the win.

  • The power of protein

Regardless of whether you’re a sprinter or a thrower, a baseball player or a swimmer, protein is an essential nutrient your body needs daily.

Beyond protein’s well-known role in building and repairing lean muscle, protein controls many metabolic processes in the body, aids in repair of body cells and assists with building and maintaining healthy bones.

While exercise is essential for building muscle mass, muscle growth only happens when exercise is combined with a well-balanced diet — one that includes high-quality protein. But how much protein do you really need and what type of protein should you be eating?

    Determining Your Protein Needs

Protein needs vary based on your activity level, type of activity and overall caloric needs. The chart below gives you a good place to start:

    Protein Needs
If you are: Multiply your body weight (in pounds) by:
    A recreational exerciser 0.5-0.7 g/lb
    An endurance athlete 0.6-0.8 g/lb
    A strength-training athlete 0.6-0.8 g/lb
An athlete in rehabilitation   up to 0.9 g/lb

If you multiply your body weight in pounds by the number or range above, this will give you grams of protein per day. For example, an endurance athlete who is 130 pounds would need approximately 65-104 grams of protein per day.

It is best to distribute your protein needs evenly throughout the day, by enjoying high-quality protein at meals and snacks. Some experts suggest 20-35 grams of protein at each meal — getting the remainder of your protein at snack time.

To put these daily recommendations into perspective:

    Protein in common foods
Milk and yogurt (1 cup) 8-10 grams
    Greek Yogurt 17-20 grams
    Cheese (1 oz) 6-8 grams
Lean beef (3 oz)    22-27 grams
Lean pork (3 oz) 24-26 grams
Lean poultry (3 oz)  25-26 grams
    Seafood (3 oz) 18-22 grams
    Eggs (1 large) 6 grams
    Beans (1/2 cup) 7-8 grams
    Nuts (1 oz) 6-8 grams
Peanut Butter (2 Tbsp) 8 grams
    Tofu (3 oz)  6 grams

    Protein quality matters

Many foods contain protein, but the amount and quality of protein varies in each food. Proteins are made up of “building blocks” called amino acids.

Animal-based proteins — those foods such as meat, fish, eggs, milk and other dairy products — are considered high-quality proteins because they provide all of the essential amino acids our bodies need. Some plant proteins (soy, quinoa, amaranth and buckwheat) contain all of the essential amino acids, but most plant proteins are lacking one or more.

This doesn’t mean that plant proteins aren’t beneficial. All foods have a place in a well-balanced diet. It simply means that a variety of proteins should be enjoyed daily to get all of the necessary building blocks for muscle growth and repair.

Getting enough calories to meet energy needs

Eating enough non-protein foods is also important to help ensure that protein in your diet is being used to repair and build muscle. If your calorie intake is too low, your body may burn protein as a source of energy instead of allowing it to be utilized as the building blocks for your body’s muscles, cells and organs.

Remember, while protein is important for muscle growth and repair, carbohydrate is the body’s primary fuel source. Make sure you’re eating a balanced diet. Revisit Is Your Plate in Shape? for more on eating the MyPlate way.

    Try these protein-powered meal ideas:

    Breakfast

    • Greek yogurt breakfast banana split — slice a banana in half and place in a bowl, top with one scoop each of vanilla and strawberry Greek yogurt, fresh berries and slivered almonds.
    • Scrambled eggs with shredded cheese, fresh fruit and a glass of milk.
    • Whole-wheat bagel with peanut butter, small banana and a glass of milk.

    Lunch

    • Tuna salad on whole-wheat bread, baby carrots and an apple.
    • Turkey and cheese sandwich, celery with peanut butter, grapes and a glass of milk.

    Snack Ideas

    • String cheese, hard-boiled egg, Greek yogurt, apple with peanut butter, almonds, trail mix, edamame, cottage cheese topped with fresh fruit, or a smoothie made with yogurt, milk and fruit.
