  • Transfer rule changes highlight January’s Legislative Council proposals

AURORA — Three proposed changes to the transfer rule head the topics to be discussed at CHSAA’s Legislative Council meeting in January.

The proposals are as varied as they come. One would do away with penalizing athletically-motivated transfers altogether; another would tweak the current rule to make transfers ineligible for the last half of the regular season and postseason; and a third would make all transfers ineligible for an entire calendar year.

In order to pass as administrative proposals, each change requires a simple majority of the 75-member Legislative Council, which is made up of representatives of leagues and associations from around the state.

As is the case with every proposal, they did not come from the CHSAA office, which cannot submit bylaw changes to the Council. Instead, they came from leagues and the Board of Directors.

The meeting is set for Jan. 29 at Radisson Denver Southeast. A complete agenda and PDFs of proposals can be found here.

Here’s a more in-depth look at the proposed transfer rule changes:

This proposal would change the rule to so that all transfers will be eligible for varsity play at the last 50 percent of a season, as well as the postseason. It calls for deleting the sections to the transfer rule dealing with bonafide moves, mid-year transfers, hardships, international students — and, mostly visibly — athletic transfers.

It would, in effect, put all transfers, regardless of their motivation, on level footing. If an athlete were to transfer because of a lack of playing time, they would miss 50 percent of the season. If one were to transfer because they moved from Grand Junction to Littleton, they would sit out 50 percent of the season. If they were to transfer because of a broken home, they would miss 50 percent.

In effect, there would be no more waiver process.

ADM-6 (from the Board of Directors) (PDF)

It’s a small change to the wording, but this proposal would mark a big shift in the philosophy of the current rule. Instead of having athletes sit out the first half of a season following a transfer (which is the current rule), it would require athletes to sit out the last half of a varsity season, as well as the postseason.

Part of the rationale included with this proposal: “The membership has become increasingly concerned about the transferring of students for athletics to participate in the state playoffs.”

ADM-7 (from the Board of Directors) (PDF)

In probably the most sweeping change, this proposal would make all transfers (with certain exceptions) ineligible to play varsity sports for an entire calendar year. It specifically focuses on athletically-motivated transfers.

Additionally, it would add the following language to the hardship exception: “Unless the school determines that a hardship has been met (per 1800.71), the school cannot submit a hardship waiver. Detailed documentation must accompany any request.”

In speaking to these proposed changes in his office on Wednesday, CHSAA commissioner Paul Angelico said he believes the current transfer rule “isn’t as broken as some may think it is.” Specifically, the CHSAA office received 178 waiver requests to the transfer rule this fall; only 18 were denied.

“If schools only submit waivers that meet the definition of a hardship, as they have been doing this fall, the current process works very well,” Angelico said.

As such, he isn’t sure a change is necessary.

“We shouldn’t make a change to make our lives easier,” Angelico said, referring to schools and the CHSAA office having to deal with waivers. “If we’re going to make a change, it should be to make sure that the rule is fair and equitable.”

Angelico added that he was worried about the proposals that do away with the waiver process.

“What about a situation where kids are homeless, or both mom and dad are in jail? We face situations that need waivers,” he said. “I don’t want to lose the ability to help kids through a waiver.”

    Other agenda highlights

    • The new quarter limits for football, which we reported on last week, is officially on the agenda as a sport proposal.
    • Likewise, the new classification enrollment splits from CLOC will be voted on. Here’s a more in-depth look at the idea, which seeks an equal number of teams in all classes.
    • Baseball’s new pitching limits are set to be decided.
    • The golf committee recommended that iWanamaker, the online scoring system, become mandatory for all regular and postseason events.
    • The softball committee changed some seeding criteria for Class 3A. Additionally, it created more stringent standards for regional host sites.
    • All volleyball matches will be best of five sets at the state championships, regardless of if the pool play match will affect the semifinal participants.
    • Tennis’ new lineup evaluation committee will get put to a vote. Here’s more info.

HENDERSON — Andrew Romero III had 23 points and seven rebounds to lead Mountain Range boys basketball to a 65-61 win over Legacy on Tuesday night at the Prairie View Tournament.

Max Castillo added 20 points for the Mustangs, while Ben Egan had 11. Dalton Royer led Legacy with 27 points and six rebounds on 12-of-15 shooting.

COLORADO SPRINGS — In the Class 4A state semifinals last March, Malik Fletcher and his Denver South Rebels got the best of J’on St. Clair, advancing to the championship game.

St. Clair — who was coaching Cheyenne Mountain at the time — saw his season end that day. His chance for payback came Monday night as his Rampart Rams topped the Rebels 62-55 in a non-league contest.

Prior to tip-off, St. Clair admitted that he didn’t think his team quite had the chance to gel together in the early part of the season.

The Rams didn’t appear to have any trouble with chemistry early as they jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, forcing the Rebels to burn an early timeout. Their balanced scoring and suffocating 1-3-1 zone got them out to a much-needed 1-9 lead after the first quarter.

“The way we pressured the ball, we did a really good job of pressuring the ball in spots that they weren’t accustomed to being at,” St. Clair said. “I knew their shooters would just shoot shoot shoot so as long as we stopped the dribble penetration, they couldn’t get to their shooters.”

After the first quarter it appeared Fletcher’s squad had calmed down a bit and was able to make some more field goals and, more importantly, draw more shooting fouls. But it was a block for Chudier Bile that turned into a transition three-pointer for Connor Nelson that gave the Rebels their first real spark of energy in the game.

But that energy was short-lived. The Rebels were only able to muster one field goal in the third quarter and scored nine of their 11 points in the period from the free throw line. Through the course of the game, the Rebels shot 34 times from the charity stripe, converting only 16 of them, far fewer than Fletcher would like.

“The key to the game was our inability to step up to the free throw line and make free throws,” Fletcher said. “We missed a tremendous amount of points in the paint, layups and put backs. In a seven-point game you just have to make free throws.”

Despite the lack of production from the free throw line, the Rebels were able to maintain pace with the Rams with the majority of the second and third quarters. With a 42-31 lead, Rampart guard Cal Zeb Roberson knocked down a big three, increasing the lead to 14 points. Point guard Romeo Maestas hit a similar shot in the fourth quarter to increase the Rams lead to 12 at that point.

“They were great; those guys hit (the shots) and they gave us energy,” senior Donovan Oldham said. “Both of those guys are just sophomores so it was big for them to step up like that.”

Maestas led all scorers with 18 points, with 11 coming in the fourth quarter. Oldham added 15 of his own to help the Rams hang on for the 62-55 win.

“I know Denver South is going to be in the top 10, they play a good schedule,” St. Clair said. “This prepares us for (Tuesday) which is the start of our league play so this is good.”

HIGHLANDS RANCH — ThunderRidge wasn’t in the holiday giving mood Monday night during a non-league contest against Columbine.

The Grizzlies, ranked No. 2 in the Class 5A boys basketball CHSAANow.com poll, limited the Rebels to just nine field goals the entire game. The defensive effort kept ThunderRidge (5-0 overall) undefeated on the season with a 62-34 victory.

“We scouted (Columbine) so we were better prepared for what they do,” ThunderRidge coach Joe Ortiz said. “Elias Tiedgen is a great one-on-one defensive player. He has guarded everyone’s best player for us, and then we’ve got (Zach Pirog) Pirog at 6-foot-10. So we have two great defensive pieces.”

For the majority of the game, Tiedgen shut down Columbine senior Keaton Matthies. The Rebels’ leading scorer eventually finished with a team-high 11 points, but seven of those points came in the fourth quarter when ThunderRidge had the game well in hand.

“We played great defense as a team,” Pirog said. “We made them move the ball around. They like to drive and we took away their penetration.”

Columbine didn’t sink its first field goal until there was 2:23 left in the second quarter. Senior Tucker Holden ended the drought and finished with 10 points.

An offensive bright spot for the Rebels (4-2) was their free-throw shooting. Columbine finished 15-of-16 from the line, but it wasn’t enough to pull off the upset.

“A rough night offensively and I give all the credit to (ThunderRidge’s) defense,” Columbine coach Clay Thielking said. “They made things hard and they had us very well scouted. It snowballed on us.”

Another problem the Rebels faced with ThunderRidge junior Troy Brady. The 5-foot-9 guard led the Grizzlies in scoring with 15 points off the bench. All of Brady’s points came on five 3-pointers in the first three quarters.

“They’ve got to shoot fearless and Troy can definitely shoot like that. We see that everyday. It’s not a surprise to us,” Ortiz said. “The nice thing is we have depth in our shooters. Our best shooter might be coming off the bench.”

Brady gave the Grizzlies a much-needed offensive lift midway through the third quarter when the Rebels were threatening to cut ThunderRidge’s lead to single digits. The junior hit back-to-back 3-pointers in a span of 30 seconds to push the Grizzlies’ lead to 36-19 with 3:33 left in the third quarter.

“That’s a great weapon coming off the bench,” Thielking said. “We knew he (Brady) could shoot it. We just lost him and he burned us.”

Pirog finished right around his average with 14 points. Junior Austin Mueller contributed eight points off the bench as nine different Grizzlies found their way to the scoring column.

ThunderRidge heads to the Foothill Holiday Classic in Nevada from Dec. 19-22. The Grizzlies return to Colorado to face defending 5A state champion Denver East on Jan. 3 at Manual High School’s Thunderdome.

“It’s definitely important,” Pirog said of heading to the out-of-state tournament. “We need to go there and play our best. We definitely want to keep our undefeated record. We will definitely be playing some tough teams.”

Columbine had taken on an ambitious non-league schedule facing the top two teams currently ranked in the 5A boys basketball CHSAANow.com rankings. The Rebels suffered a 34-point loss to No. 1 Regis Jesuit during the opening week of the season.

The Rebels rebounded with three wins over three days last week to claim the Columbine Classic Tournament before taking the 28-point loss Monday night to ThunderRidge.

“It will help a lot,” Thielking said of playing Regis and ThunderRidge early in the season. “This is why you schedule the best teams in the state, to see where you are at and learn. There is no reason for us to panic. We did a lot of good things as well.”

Columbine closes out its schedule before the winter break with a road game Friday at Liberty in Colorado Springs. The Rebels square off against Standley Lake at 3 p.m. Saturday at Pepsi Center in Denver.

  • Fruita Monument hires Montrose’s Todd Casebier as football coach

Todd Casebier has had an enormous amount of success building Montrose into a Class 4A football power. Now, Fruita Monument is hoping the coach can do the same for its program.

Fruita announced it had hired Casebier as its next football coach on Tuesday. In a statement, the school said it was “excited to have a coach of this caliber lead its football program.”

Casebier had been at Montrose for 10 seasons, going 86-30. The year prior to his arrival, Montrose went 1-10.

Now, he’ll tackle a similar challenge at Fruita Monument, a 5A program which is coming off of a 1-9 season. The Wildcats haven’t had a winning season since 2004 — when they went 6-5 — and are 34-66 since 2005.

Fruita will have some pieces back in 2015, including quarterback Sam Schroeder (1,811 yards, 11 total TDs) and wideout Grady Winters (445 yards, four TDs).

But Casebier’s Montrose teams have traditionally relied heavily upon the run — for instance, last year, they ran 88 percent of the time and averaged 357.4 yards on the ground per game. So it will be interesting to see how his offense develops at Fruita.

Before coaching at Montrose, Casebier had a successful stint at Palisade (1998-2004), a school from where he graduated in 1985. He was also an assistant at Durango from 1990-97.

Montrose went 10-2 last season and earned the No. 3 seed in 4A. The Indians lost to Broomfield in the quarterfinals.

That followed a 12-2 year in 2013 which included a run to the 4A title game.

Montrose made the playoffs nine times under Casebier, and had six seasons of nine wins or more.

    Monday, Dec. 8:

    • A low scoring 16 point half for the home Mullen Mustangs spelled doom as Mountain Range’s Ben Egan poured in 21 points in the 64-50 road victory. James Potter’s 19 along with Andrew Romero’s 17 added the balance!
    • Didn’t take long for the first “oh my!” of week two to roll in as sophomore Kolton Peterson caught fire for 38 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists, but that wasn’t enough to stop Heritage behind Jack Peck’s 24 points, 5 assists. The Eagles protect home court 81-71.
    • Former league rivals Wheat Ridge and Alameda hooked up Monday. Dennis Pleuss was all over it.
    • Fairview was “feeling it” from three-point range and Kai Casey’s photo report took it all in.
    • Greeley West cooled off a hot Aurora Central 61-54 in tourney play. Preston Marion with the huge double-double of 17 points, 15 rebounds along with Connor Thompson’s 15 points did the trick. Elijah Coleman led with 22 points, 8 rebounds in the loss for the Trojans.
    • Boulder walked in the Patriots house and took down the young GW squad 64-47 behind Landon Taliaferro’s 22 points and Garrett Turner’s 20 points, 6 assists.
    • Denver South was without their senior point guard Devante Loggins in a previous loss last week but he returned in a giving mood dishing out 15 assists in the Rebels 61-44 win over Broomfield. Loggins added 7 steals which we’re sure led to some of those assists. Fellow senior Turner Dumas Peterson led scoring with 13 points.
    • Denver North squeaked out a solid one point road victory 70-69 at Arvada Monday night. Belmin Salihovic put in 18 points in the home loss.
    • Monarch continues its strong early play as they record the 9 point 52-43 win over Sierra.

    • The 5A leading scorer, Thomas Neff, continues his hot start with 33 points in Arvada West’s 61-46 win over Legacy.
    • Fossil Ridge took care of Highlands Ranch and big man Ryan Quaid collected a 19 point, 10 rebound double-double in the 71-53 win. Riley Stewart had 19 for the Falcons in the loss.
    • Holy Family used a 14-4 first quarter start to beat Poudre 63-42 behind Chris Helbig’s 20 points.
    • Two teams quietly off to nice starts tangled Tuesday in Grandview and Montbello. The Warriors won this one 58-51 behind Malik Hart’s 21 points. Andrew Joiner led the Wolves again with 17.
    • Doherty had some serious balance on display as they kept Castle View winless with five players scoring in double figures led by Emin Cecunjanin’s 14 point, 11 rebound double-double. Jontrell Herman scored 16 in the loss.
    • Senior Dee Henderson continues his double-double ways for Thornton with 22 points, 14 rebounds but Pomona got the two point win 51-49.
    • Tim Visser was in the house as Cherokee Trail ended Denver East’s in-state win streak. The Angels’ Brian Carey scored 37 on a bad ankle but C Trail’s overall balance proved too much.
    • Rangeview’s senior Tarren Storey-Way had the hot hand this night as the Raiders pulled away from Rocky Mountain 74-49 with Storey-Way dropping 22 points. Benji Williams with 19 in the loss.
    • Jack Eberhard covered the action shots as Smoky Hill traveled to ThunderRidge.
    • Pueblo Central is ranked No. 7 in this weeks 4A poll and their backcourt duo of Kobi Betts and Michael Ranson can flat out fill it up! They both scored 28 in this win over Falcon.

    • Ridgeview Academy notched a big win for their guys over Manual 70-61 and C Torres was absolutely on fire scoring 38.

    Wednesday, Dec. 10:

    • Our guy Jack Eberhard took in the Pepsi Center environment as Cherry Creek handed a short-handed Denver East their second straight loss.
    • Chaparral has weapons and Chase Coon dropped 23 points in the Wolverines 88-66 win over Chatfield. Check out our Fever buddy Jake Holtzman’s big time double-double of 18 points, 15 rebounds.
    • Donovan Oldham logged a double-double for Rampart of 20 points, 11 rebounds in their win over Castle View. Jontrell Hermann giving his all and “stat-stuffin” 21 points, 6 rebounds, 7 steals, and 4 assists!
    • Colorado Springs Christian, our No. 1 3A squad, flexed some small school muscle beating Pine Creek 48-44.
    • A little more 3A muscle flexing? A hot Mead squad took down Prairie View 75-52 with Blake Goodwin putting up a 26 point, 11 rebound double-double.
    • The Farmers are showing some scoring balance early in the season as Vedin Kozic’s 20 points led four in double figures as Wheat Ridge thumped Gateway 76-48.
    • Check out Erie with two players getting double-doubles in Kyle Leahy’s 29 point, 11 rebound effort along side Cameron McCurry’s 15 points, 16 rebounds. Fourteen point win over Standley Lake.
    • A good one down South as Falcon outlasted Mesa Ridge 61-59. Shawn LiVecchi’s 23 points got it done.
    • Tons of talented youth on the floor in George Washington at Valor Chrisitan. Jalen Sanders with a 19 point, 15 rebound huge double-double. And how about Dylan McCaffrey transitioning from football to hoops with a nice 13 point, 11 rebound double-double as well. Looks like Coach DeGray has more weapons to work with!

Might it be time to look out for Montbello? Maybe so after a win over Ralston Valley last Thursday. (Dennis Pleuss)

    Thursday, Dec. 11:

    • Overland dropped to No. 4 in our 5A poll this week but the Trailblazers started their Utah road trip with an impressive 76-65 win over Wasatch Academy who traditionally has several D-I players on their prep school roster. Big man De’Ron Davis with a 23 point, 10 rebound double-double.

    • Monarch capped a hot start at 7-1 with 50-47 win over Fairview.
    • To add some serious credence to Overland’s win over Wasatch Academy, the prep school took down Denver East 72-43 in a lopsided contest.
    • This Warrior squad will be jumping into the 5A top 10 next week as Montbello beat Rock Canyon 65-60 in the Ralston Valley tourney finale. Montbello’s point guard Frankie Penn led with 15 and Mitch Lombard threw in 26 in the loss.

Resurrection Christian is the lone newcomer to CHSAANow.com’s hockey rankings this week. The Cougars are No. 10.

Other than that, though, there wasn’t much change overall. Outside of Mountain Vistsa jumping Monarch for the No. 4 spot, teams Nos. 1-9 all stayed put.

That means Ralston Valley retained its No. 1 ranking again this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

The Warriors are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s rankings this week, while the Golden Eagles are No. 9. Both teams are 5-1.

That wasn’t the only change. Top-ranked Regis Jesuit and No. 2 ThunderRidge stayed put, but Overland moved up to No. 3 after a solid showing at an out-of-state tournament.

Colorado Springs Christian (3A) and Sanford (2A) both stayed put atop their respective rankings this week.

In 1A, top-ranked McClave lost to unranked Wiley last week. As a result, McClave dropped to No. 6 and Wiley is No. 10 in this week’s poll.

It also left a gap at the top, where Sangre de Cristo is now the No. 1 team. But voters were split, as a total of six teams received first-place votes this week.

Fairview girls basketball, 5-1 to start the season, has joined the Class 5A rankings this week.

The Knights are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s poll. They went 2-1 last week, with the lone loss coming to No. 1 ThunderRidge.

ThunderRidge retained its spot atop 5A, thanks in large part to a second win over Broomfield, which was ranked No. 2 at the time.

Ther other big change this week was in 3A, where Sterling overtook Pagosa Springs for the No. 1 spot in the classification.

The 4A poll added a pair of Western Slope teams this week in Durango (No. 9) and Montrose (No. 10)

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.
