Rain continues to have its way with the spring postseason.

The majority of the baseball districts in Class 2A-5A that were originally scheduled for Saturday have been postponed to next Monday or Tuesday. Some will try to play Sunday, but only five are still scheduled for Saturday, as of 10:30 a.m.

All five are on the Western Slope, where rain hasn’t been as heavy and constant compared to other parts of the state, which have faced storms bringing rain, lightning and hail off and on since last Sunday.

The storms have already forced the postponement of 5A and 4A tennis to next Monday-Wednesday, and also the delay of the 1A baseball bracket.

In 5A, the only district still scheduled for Saturday is District 4 in Fruita Monument. District 5, which was to be hosted by Rock Canyon at Valor Christian’s turf field, postponed early Saturday morning.

Fruita’s district has delayed the first game two hours, and the Rocky Mountain-Smoky Hill contest has been moved to Fruita Monument High School at 1 p.m.

The only 4A district to get play in was District 5 in Montrose. That district completed the first game, but then delayed its second game and the title game to Sunday. District 2 (at Durango) postponed its games at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and will try to play on Sunday.

In 3A, Olathe (District 6) and Bayfield (District 7) will still host Saturday, but both are running on delays. Eaton’s District 1 was hopeful it would be able to play, but also postponed early Saturday.

Three 2A districts — 1, 5, and 7 — were able to complete play earlier this week, but five others remain. Of those, only District 2 (in Delta) remains on track for Saturday.

Games must be completed by Tuesday in order to keep the rest of the state tournaments on schedule.

A complete schedule for the remaining districts which have been postponed is available on the individual bracket pages, which are constantly being updated:

  • 5A boys lacrosse quarterfinal roundup: Kent Denver holds off Castle View

AURORA — It was Ryan Bergner who finally gave Kent Denver room to take a breath.

The freshman scored late in the fourth quarter to give the Sun Devils a two-goal lead against Castle View — which, in this Class 5A boys lacrosse quarterfinal, was monumental. And it ultimately proved to be enough as the No. 4 seed Kent held off No. 12 Castle View 18-16.

The game featured an astonishing 27 ties or lead changes, including 16 in the first half alone.

The two teams were tied a 6 after the first quarter, and Kent led 12-11 at halftime. Castle View took a 15-14 lead entering the fourth quarter, and then the teams traded goals in the first three minutes of the final frame.

It was a 16-15 Castle View lead at that point, but then Bergner tied the game with 6:49 remaining, and Charlie Highum delivered what proved to be the winner with a shot that caught the top right corner of the cage.

Bergner then gave the Sabercats a two-goal lead with 2:44 to play.

This is Kent Denver’s third-straight trip to the semifinals.

Rock Canyon scored the game’s first goal, but Cherry Creek scored the final 11 en route to yet another semifinal appearance.

Cherry Creek has made the semifinals every year since 2001, a span of 15 seasons. In fact, since the sport was sanctioned in 1999, the Bruins have only failed to reach the semis one season, in 2000.

On Saturday, Maxwell Tennant led Cherry Creek with four goals, while Michael Morean and Griffin Gharrity each had a pair.

The Bruins led just 2-1 led in the first half, but Connor Till scored with 25 seconds left. It seemed deflating for Rock Canyon.

Cherry Creek then opened the third quarter with a goal from Gharrity 49 seconds in, and went on to score a total of seven goals in frame to make it 10-1.

Colton Jackson scored Rock Canyon’s lone goal.

    (3) Mountain Vista 9, (11) Arapahoe 5

Mountain Vista moved to the semifinals for the first time in school history following its win over the Warriors.

Colin Munro lead the Golden Eagles with four goals, while Christian Barker added three. Bryan Hancock also scored twice.

Arapahoe was led by Brian Wilson and Tanner Sparks, who each had two goals. Chase Douglas also scored.

    (2) Regis Jesuit 11, (7) Monarch 9

Monarch kept inching back, but Regis Jesuit was able to hold off the Coyotes in the quarterfinals.

Regis led 10-5 after the third quarter, and then 11-6 early in the fourth, but Monarch was able to cut it to 11-9 with 1:02 remaining.

That was as close as they would get, though, as Regis moved to the semifinals for the eighth year in a row.

Regis was led by Matt Soran’s four goals, and Chet Dunstan scored three. Ben Bechter added a pair, and Truett Davis and Joey Chott also scored.

Monarch’s Max Wiesner led the Coyotes with four goals.

AURORA — The Warriors made it tough, but in the end, Mountain Vista just had too much offense for Arapahoe.

On a cloudy afternoon from Legacy Stadium in Aurora, the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles (16-1 overall, 10-0 league) defeated the Arapahoe Warriors (10-6, 5-2) by a final score of 9-5 to move on to the Class 5A boys lacrosse semifinals. The Warriors had previously ended the Eagles’ season in the playoffs in each of the last two years.

“Yeah, it’s a great feeling to get this win,” said Mountain Vista head coach Jake Herman. “Knowing how things have ended for us the last two years – and this isn’t the top of the mountain for us either. The endgame is a championship.”

The third-seeded Golden Eagles took it to 11th-seeded Arapahoe from the opening faceoff, maintaining solid possession throughout the game and peppering Warriors goaltender Dylan Calkins with shots early and often.

“Having played them not that long ago actually worked in our favor,” said Herman. “We had a definitive gameplan going in and I really think that that made the biggest difference.”

The Arapahoe senior was equal to the challenge though, stymieing his opposition again and again. IN fact, by the time the dust had settled on the first half of play, the score was a mere 4-1 for the Eagles, despite their dominance on the field.

“We were really waiting for him to have a big game,” said Arapahoe coach Guy Cerasoli, “and there really isn’t a bigger time to have it than today.”

The one Mountain Vista player to solve Calkens in the half was senior captain Christian Barker, who notched a hat trick on his team’s first four goals.

And if Barker was the star of the first half, then fellow attacker Colin Munro was the star of the second half, which began with a slow fog drifting out over the playing field.

While the Warriors doubled their first half goal total in the third quarter on tallies by Chase Douglas and a second from Brian Wilson (who managed the only goal of the first half), Munro broke out with two goals in the third quarter and another just three minutes into the fourth, bringing his own total to four in the contest.

On Mountain Vista’s ninth tally, Calkens was injured in net for the Warriors and replaced by senior Ben Newell. And although the former netminder had stood on his head by most accounts, the Arapahoe defense seemed to play inspired in front of his replacement and were able to hold the Eagles scoreless over the final nine minutes and even adding two more goals of their own by Tanner Sparks to cut the lead to 9-5 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

That was as close as the Warriors would make it though, as time would expire before more of a comeback could be mounted.

“We really didn’t do anything different (from last time we played them),” said Cerasoli. “We just have to execute better. We didn’t execute today, so unfortunately, now it’s gotta wait until next year.”

For Mountain Vista, the win marks the first time in school history that the boys lacrosse team has made it to the semifinals.

“We’re not done. I can’t stress that enough,” Herman said. “After the way the last two years ended, the only thing that will satisfy this team is a state title.”

AURORA — CHSAA on Friday scheduled a meeting to discuss the playoff format and seeding procedures used by baseball.

The meeting is set for Sept. 10 at the CHSAA office, according to Bert Borgmman, the Association’s assistant commissioner who oversees baseball. Every member of a seeding committee in each of the sport’s five classifications was invited, and most have already responded that they will attend.

At issue will be examining the current system used to seed and determine the playoff fields — in 3A-5A, that’s the Wild Card points. The end result of the meeting will most likely be a move away from that system.

Wild Card points were put into place prior to the 2012 season, with virtually unanimous approval from the high school baseball community. The change was proposed by a league, championed by some members of the media, and ultimately approved by the Legislative Council.

However, in recent years, many flaws have been exposed in the system.

On Tuesday, CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann indicated an interest in moving away from Wild Card points.

“We know that no one system is perfect,” he said then, “but we do know that the current system may have more flaws that previously anticipated.”

The meeting, which will be held at the CHSAA office, is the first step toward change. It should give the baseball committee some direction on what to do when they next meet in November.

In addition, there is a separate meeting set for May 28 which will discuss proposals that would expand the baseball season past its current 19-game regular-season format.
