The girls soccer state tournament brackets were released on Sunday, and Mountain Vista, Evergreen, Colorado Academy and Vail Mountain each earned top overall seeds.

Vail Mountain leads the first-ever Class 2A field. That classification is playing for the first time this season.

The Gore Rangers are 13-1-0 this season with their lone loss coming to Denver Christian on March 27. Denver Christian (9-5-1) is the No. 4 seed. Front Range Christian is No. 2, Dawson is No. 3 and Colorado Springs School rounds out the top five.

The 2A field is comprised of 12 teams, with seeds Nos. 1-4 getting a first-round bye. The tournament begins play on Tuesday, with the championship May 19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

See the full 2A bracket here.

In 5A, Mountain Vista has earned the top overall seed. The Golden Eagles (13-2-0) will host No. 32 Rangeview to begin the 32-team tournament on Tuesday.

Grandview is the No. 2 seed, and is followed by No. 3 ThunderRidge, No. 4 Broomfield and No. Pine Creek.

The 5A championship is also played at Dick’s, and is May 20.

Find the entire 5A bracket here.

Evergreen (14-1-0) heads the 4A field, which is also comprised of 32 teams. It opens with No. 32 seed Canon City.

Other top-5 seeds in 4A include The Classical Academy, Cheyenne Mountain, Battle Mountain and Windsor.

The 4A tournament begins play on Wednesday. It’s championship is May 20, also at Dick’s.

The full 4A bracket is here.

In 3A, Colorado Academy sits atop the bracket. That class is now playing a 24-team bracket following the addition of 2A.

It means the top eight seeds will all get a bye in the first round, which is slated for Friday. The 3A title game is May 19 at Dick’s.

Teams with first-round byes, besides CA, include No. 2 The Academy, No. 3 Jefferson Academy, No. 4 Kent Denver, No. 5 Peak to Peak, No. 6 Frontier Academy, No. 7 Liberty Common and No. 8 Middle Park.

  • No. 3 Denver East girls lacrosse upsets No. 1 Cherry Creek

GREENWOOD VILLAGE — To watch Denver East play, you’d think that they were the No. 1 ranked team in Colorado.

The No. 3 Angels (11-4 overall) came over to Cherry Creek and outlasted the No. 1 ranked Bruins (13-2) in their own stadium by a final score of 12-11, behind incredible quick-strike ability and the outstanding play of goaltender Lula Mitchell.

“Lula is one of the better goalies in this league,” said Denver East co-head coach Chris Romer. “And it’s obvious she is getting in peoples’ head because the more shots she stops, the more start sailing wide of the net as well.”

Yet despite Mitchell’s game, it was back and forth all evening as the two teams exchanged blows throughout the duration of the match, though East did not trail at any point.

The first half began with fireworks, as the two teams combined for 13 total goals. After Alex Searles’ great individual effort to send the Angels out to a 3-1 lead, Eliza Radochonski took a pass from Emma Godfrey and buried it to put the Bruins right back into the game.

And that was the way it would go in the half, with the Angels building two and three goal leads on fast breaks and quick passes, only to see Cherry Creek come right back on long, sustained possessions and prime opportunities in front off of fouls.

Perhaps the most impressive goal of the half came on an apparent one-timer by Radochonski, who streaked down the slot to swat a well-timed pass from teammate Hali Sibilia out of mid-air and into the net.

At the half, it was 8-5 in favor of the visitors and the Bruins knew they had to make something happen.

As the second half commenced, Creek looked determined to even the score. They battled back with even better possessions than in the first, with Eats seemingly content to nurse their three goal lead. Holly Sutherland would make it 8-7 before the Angels got their next tally, and the Bruins would eventually tie the game at 9-all with over 11 minutes to play.

That would be when it all unraveled for Cherry Creek. Three more tallies by East, including Sarah Nick’s fifth of the game, would put the Angels up for good, and though the Bruins would get within one with three minutes to go, they would never really have a chance for the final equalizer.

For Creek it was the first loss the team has suffered since playing Foothill High School in California in late March.

As for the Angels, they insist that their game tonight was nothing new.

“We just lined up and played East lacrosse,” co-head coach Mallory Cleveland said with a wry smile.

  • Regis Jesuit hires new football coach from Arizona school

Regis Jesuit has named Dan Filleman as its new football coach, hiring him from a school in Arizona.

The news was first reported by the Arizona Republic on Thursday night, and again by the Aurora Sentinel on Friday.

Regis Jesuit athletic director Kelly Doherty confirmed the hire on Friday morning, as well.

Filleman had been the coach at Liberty in Peoria, Ariz. since 2008, where he was 66-19. He replaces Mark Nolan — who, coincidentally, left for Notre Dame Prep in Arizona in late March.

Liberty is a Division II school in Arizona, meaning it plays in the second-highest classification.  It advanced to the Division II championship last season, and lost to Centennial in the final. The Lions were 12-2 last season.

In Filleman’s first season, Liberty went 6-6. That was the school’s first year as a varsity program. Since then, it won at least eight games every season, and hit double-digit victories in four of his seven seasons. (Liberty also went 7-1 as a junior varsity program in 2007, which Filleman also oversaw.)

In building the program, Filleman had a steep challenge. Nearby Centennial is a power program which won titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008 (and again in 2014), and also advanced to the title game in 2005, 2010 and 2012.

According to his bio on the official Liberty football site, Filleman was also an assistant at Ironwood in Glendale, Ariz., for nine seasons. He attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., and played football and hockey there.

He takes over a Regis Jesuit program when went 10-2 last season, and advanced to the Class 5A quarterfinals.
